Chapter 54

Kam waved his tiny fist in the air and Cas smiled.

"Dean, I think he likes the car." Cas said as he shifted the baby in his arms.

"Good, because he's going to be inheriting the Impala."

They sped over the pavement, and Dean kept the music way lower then he normally would have, for Kam's sake.

Soon they reached town, and Dean parked on the side of the street so they could walk around. "I think the first thing on the list is a car seat." Dean suggested as Cas got out of the car with Kam.

"Yes, I suppose." Cas sounded distant as he took in the stores, looking for an interesting one. When he was pregnant, he was more...oblivious? He didn't know if that was the right word. He really didn't pay attention to any humans except Dean and Sam. Now it seemed there were so many..so many things to watch out for and be aware of.

"You alright?" Dean came up behind him, frowning with worry.

"Yes..I'm just feeing a bit strange. Now that I truly am one of them," Cas gestured to a group a people chattering outside a café. "I need to try to fit in."

Dean put an arm around his shoulder, squeezing it. "Babe..you're way too unique to fit in. and I stick out like a sore thumb. But.. just don't say anything weird and we'll be ok."

Dean began walking, pulling Cas with him. A woman gave them a strange look and shook her head. Cas did not notice, and Dean was grateful. He had forgotten that people might not tolerate their relationship..they hadn't really been in public too often before and Dean hoped that this would be an uneventful trip.

They walked a few more blocks, just enjoying being outside in the sun. Both were relaxed..it did indeed feel like they were normal at that moment.

Dean pointed ahead of them where a small department store stood. "Bet we can get everything there."

Cas smiled; he loved the enthusiasm in Dean's voice. The hunter was so excited...and that made Cas excited, too. Kam gave a small squeal, and Cas patted his belly. "Yes, we're buying things for you."

The store was crammed with goodies; they wandered past the aisles, heading for the baby section. Dean offered to hold Kam so Cas could go crazy, picking out whatever he wanted. It was nice to see Cas eager to shop. He had been different lately since he had been brought back to life. Quieter.

Dean took a seat on a large box that held a crib and watched as Cas made a pile at his feet. "Are you sure we'll have enough money?"

Dean rolled his eyes. "Dude, Bobby gave us a wad of cash. I think they'll be enough."

Soon there was a car seat/carrier , a small stroller, a few more articles of clothing, and a couple of other small items like extra bottles sitting next to Dean. Cas pointed to the box Dean was sitting on. "We'll need a crib, too."

"Do you like this one?" Dean pointed at the picture on the one he was seating on. "Think it's too big?"

Cas shrugged. "I don't know...as long as it fits in the room I think it's fine."

"Alright." Dean honestly didn't really have a clue what he was looking at. When Sam was a baby, he was too young to remember. They pretty much only had the bare necessities after the nursery fire...food and clothes, some toys, but not much else.

Cas had wandered off again, examining baby blankets. He picked two out, and a small pillow for the crib, and placed it on top of the growing pile.

"What else do we need?" Cas questioned, his eyes moving over the shelves full of stuff. A bath basin caught his eye and he grabbed it. He would return the old storage bin to Bobby's basement where it belonged.

Dean walked up the aisle, perusing the other items. Kam stuck his hand out as Dean passed by a shelf with stuffed animals. Stopping, Dean reached out to pull a blue teddy bear off the shelf. It was the same color as Kam's eyes. Speaking of which..they were as wide as saucers as Kam stared at the bear. Dean again could swear that Kam was an intelligent being trapped in a baby's body as those eyes sparkled with interest.

"Definitely adding the bear to the pile," Dean whispered to him, kissing the top of his head. He grabbed a few other stuffed animals and went back to Cas.

"I got some more diapers and formula just so we have them." Cas told him, pointing to the items on the floor. Dean threw the stuffed animals on top.

"Can you think of anything else?" Dean and Cas stood side by side, staring at the shelves.

"Can I help you with anything?" a cheery voice interrupted their thoughts and they both jumped. A perky saleswoman was standing behind them.

"We just..we're trying to-"

"Oh, I understand perfectly. Did you just adopt him? Trying to set up a room?"

"No, he's my son." Cas interrupted, annoyed for some reason that he couldn't explain. "Dean and I-"

"Cas..weird." Dean hissed in his ear and Cas stopped talking.

"Yes. We need basic supplies for him."

The woman took in the pile they had on the floor. "Looks like you have a fair amount already..but if I can show you-" she walked off, still talking, to one of the shelves.

"I'm going to go get the car, because there's no way in hell we can walk back with all this stuff." Dean handed Kam to Cas.

Cas glared at him. He knew it was just an excuse to get away from the annoying saleswoman.

"Hey, don't be pissed. Think of her as an Amber. I'll be back in a minute." Dean turned to go, and then stopped as if he had a second thought. Reaching out, he tipped Cas' chin up and leaned forward so their lips met. "I love you, Cas."

Dean's warmth left his lips, and Cas opened his eyes to see the hunter walking away. He smiled to himself. If he had to lose his Grace, survive an apocalypse and have a kid, there was nobody he'd rather stand next to him then Dean.

"Sir, if you please.. I'd like to show you this new innovation in the pacifiers-"

Cas rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to the saleswoman.

By the time Dean got back to the car, made a quick stop, and returned to the parking lot of the department store, at least half an hour had passed. Dean rushed back to where he left Cas, and saw that the pile had been moved to the cash registers by two more associates, plus the original saleswoman. The man who had began ringing everything up was looking at the looming pile as if it were a mountain he was about to climb. It did not seem to be getting any smaller even though he was taking more and more items off of it to ring them up.

"What took you so long?" Cas hissed, looking annoyed. He had to deal with the pesky saleswoman, pushing items on him, and the confusion of moving everything to the checkout. Several of the other customers had been cooing over Kam and asking if he was a single father..it made him dizzy to think about it again.

"I had to pick something up." Dean reached down to take Cas' hand. "I think you'll like it," he whispered.

Finally, everything was bagged, except the larger items, and the over zealous associates offered to carry everything out to the car. Dean paid the register clerk and prayed that everything would actually fit in the Impala.

After what seemed forever, the car was loaded, all the items squeezing in tight. Tim, one of the associates, eagerly pushed everything inside the car until Dean yelled at him to knock it off and that he would take care of it. The kid was going to damage the interior with his carelessness. Dean had finished, being extra careful of the way he loaded in the items.

Dean got in the driver's seat after he was done, leaning his head back against the seat, and he heard Cas sigh beside him in the passenger seat.

"I am actually glad that that's over." Cas said.

"Yeah...but now we still have to get everything home and unpack. At least there won't be any blonde saleswomen around to bug you." Dean cracked a grin.

"That isn't funny. That woman was extremely overbearing, and I resent that you left me there-"

Dean put a finger to Cas' lips to quiet him. "Put Kam on the seat for a minute and come outside."

Shooting Cas a sly grin, he hopped back out of the car. Although Cas wanted nothing more then to go home, he felt a spike of curiosity. Laying Kam gently on the seat, he touched his cheek and whispered, "Be right back."

Dean was waiting for him, a hand in one of his pockets.

"What is it?"

"I wanted to do this properly, Cas. So-" Dean dropped to one knee, and reached up to grasp Cas hand. "Will you marry me?"

"I answered this question already, Dean." Cas said playfully. "The answer hasn't changed."

"Humor me, will you?"

Rolling his eyes, Cas said, "Yes, Dean. I'll marry you."

Dean pulled a simple silver band out of his pocket, and slipped it onto Cas' finger. It sparkled in the sun, and Cas met Dean's eyes, looking awed.

"Like it?" Dean got to his feet, wrapping his arms around Cas' waist. "There's an inscription, too."

Raising his hand to study the ring, Cas saw two words carved into it. 'My Angel'

"Dean..I love it."

The hunter pushed Cas back so that he was sitting on the hood, and pressed his lips hungrily against Cas'.

"I'm glad. Got to admit, I didn't go crazy looking. I knew you wouldn't want anything fancy."

"You need one as well." Cas touched his cheek. "For the ceremony."

"Not today, Cas. I think I've taken just about enough of this for one day."

Cas nodded in agreement, and brought his lips to Dean's again. His attention was drawn away from his hunter when he saw a few older men watching them. The looks on their faces were not pleasant.

Hurriedly, Cas broke the kiss and shoved Dean away. The hunter frowned. "Cas, what-?"

One of the men coughed pointedly and the word 'faggot' could be heard underneath the faux cough.

Dean's eyes flashed as the other men laughed nastily.

"Why don't you move along there? Go back to the slimy hole where you came from?" one of the men said.

"Dean-" Cas grabbed the hunter's arm. "Please don't. We don't need trouble, and we have Kam with us, remember?"

Dean's fist was itching to connect with the sneering faces of the men, but he allowed his hand to loosen. Turning his back on the jeers, he hopped in the car and Cas followed, holding Kam tightly to his chest.

Speeding out of the parking lot, Dean fought the urge to back up and run over the bastards. Cas cleared his throat.

"That term faggot. That's derogatory?"

"Yeah." Dean rubbed his eyes. "Not everyone is going to be friendly to us, Cas. That's why I so worried about telling Bobby, remember? Some people just hate gays."

Tilting his head, Cas regarded Dean. "I don't think of us as gay. We're just..us."

"People don't see it that way, Cas." Dean smiled, and reached out a hand to ruffle Cas' hair. "But don't think about that. People are always going to have a problem about something."

The rest of the trip back was quiet, and Cas knew that Dean was upset about what had happened, but he didn't say anything. To be honest, it hadn't bothered him as much as he thought it would.

As long as he had Dean, everything would work out. The hunter made everything better. He could stand up to anyone and do anything because he had Dean.
