Chapter 58
Bobby and Sam had worked together to get Amber's new car patched up. There wasn't anything majorly wrong with it; it was just old and needed a few new parts so it didn't take long.
Amber stood by, hovering over the guys as they worked and pointing out things that needed to be fixed, until Bobby told her to shove off.
The rude statement did nothing to destroy her good mood; she simply said "Ok," and popped off to the house to pack their things.
Dean peeked through their bedroom window to spy on his brother and Bobby, but he could not see the car from the angle he was at.
"You could go help them, you know." Cas suggested as he dressed Kam.
"They got it."
Warm fingers touched Dean's neck as Cas stepped up behind him. "Dean..you need to just let Sam go."
Dean leaned his forehead on the window; he hadn't gotten any sleep and had a raging headache now. Cas rubbed his neck and leaned over his shoulder to kiss his cheek.
"Just don't let him leave without saying good bye to him. Don't let him leave with this between you." Cas patted his back and went back to Kam.
Dean's eyes were drawn to the movement outside; Sam had met Amber halfway through the yard. She had brought beers out for them. As Dean watched, Amber threw her arms around Sam's neck and kissed him.
They broke the kiss and Dean saw that Sam was smiling widely, and then he swung Amber around in the air. The older Winchester had never seen Sam so happy before. Literally, like never. It was true that Dean had not seen him with Jessica, or while he was in college, but he guessed this had to come pretty close to the happiness Sam had felt before.
Just as he was starting a new life, Sam was as well. They were going their separate ways. It felt like a repeat of when Sam had run off to go to college, but more final. More permanent. When Sam had gone off to college, Dean had known deep down they would reconnect again and hunt side-by-side once more. Now he wasn't so sure.
Dean closed his eyes and sighed softly. Cas was right as usual. It was time to let Sam go. He wasn't a kid anymore, and he didn't need Dean to protect him. He had to let his brother live his own life. Just because he accepted it though, didn't mean it would be easy.
