Lost Keys
Chapter 18
Sighing, the man dropped himself and sunk down into the couch in relief after Maka had managed to explain the situation before he could strangle Soul. He breathed out his frustration that had exploded in him just a few minutes ago and relaxed.
"Thank Shinigami…" The man sighed once more.
"I should be saying that." Soul growled, rubbing his throat in pain as he remembered how his father tried to chock him not too long ago.
"Oh dear – I'm so sorry about that," Soul's mother leaned closer to Maka's ear, "he can get a little cranky whenever he wakes up early." She whispered.
"What was that?" The man asked suspiciously.
"Oh, nothing- nothing at all!" she smiled innocently.
It was obvious he didn't believe her by the look on his face, but he ignored it anyways. "Well, whatever," the father sighed and turned to Soul, "I'm glad you've made it here, Soul. I never thought you would actually come."
"Never wanted to," Soul added, "Wes brought me here." True, he asked Wes to drive them to a hospital but he drove them here instead.
"Well, I'm thankful he did," the father said simply, which made Soul growl. "Soul," the man lean closer, "I have a favor to ask of you."
"No."
His father blinked, "W… what?"
"I said no." Soul repeated.
His father tightened his fists that were rested his knees. "No? You didn't even hear what I wanted to say."
"Don't have to." Soul added, ignoring the questing look on Maka's face. "I know it's going to be something stupid."
The man clinched his teeth, "Disrespectful as always."
Looking back and forth at her son and husband, Soul's mother noticed the flames in each others eyes as they glared at one another in a staring contest. The poor woman tried her best to think of a friendly way to prevent them from killing each other.
"W… Would anyone like some cake?" she blurted out, which caused everyone in the room to stare at her.
Soul's father sweat dropped, "Honey, not right now – "
"Oh, come on – it's strawberry!"
Maka giggled and turned to see Soul slap himself in embarrassment. Her smile vanished when she looked down at Max, who was still asleep in her arms and obviously still sick.
"Old man," Soul called, "can you call Uncle Ben over?"
"Your Uncle?" His father blinked, "He is downstairs at the party. Why do you need him?"
Soul pointed at Max, "Kid's sick."
Maka smiled. He must've noticed her discomfort.
"Already called him." A voice came from behind. Wes was leaning against the doorframe with a satisfied grin. Standing next to him was a very muscular man who was dressed in a tuxedo, holding a white suitcase.
"I felt very bad for not driving them to the hospital, so I decided to bring Uncle over." He said with a soft smile. For once, Soul was grateful his brother finally did something useful. Maybe he wasn't so bad after all? Wes winked at Maka and gave her a sexy grin–
Oh that little fucker!
"Well? You coming, miss?" Wes titled his head.
Maka nodded and headed out the door. Soul was about to get up and follow before his mother gently grabbed his shoulder and stopped him.
"Sorry sweetheart, but could you stay here a little longer?" she said with begging eyes.
"It's alright, Soul," Maka said smiling kindly at him and nodded at his mother, causing Soul to freeze in shock while his mother smiled. "I'll be waiting." The Meister said and followed Wes out the door.
Damn it Maka…
Soul sighed. In front of him was his father, sitting with a serious look in his eyes. He was always like that. Soul never saw his father with another expression on his face. He always looked mean and angry.
"Soul," His father started, "I'm glad to see you are safe."
Soul didn't say or do anything. He had run away from his own father, but his Dad didn't seem to care. As soon as Soul did come home, his father tried to chock him, and then called him Disrespectful in front of Maka, and now he is suddenly thankful of his son's safety?
The father rested his hands on his knees, "Do you know how worried I was?" he said with a soft but serious voice, "very much, Soul." He answered for himself.
Still, Soul didn't respond.
"Well, I don't have to worry anymore. You are back, and that's what matters." He sighed and continued, "The Anderson family also worried about you."
Soul stiffened.
"They were about to cancel our contract because they thought you wouldn't come back, but I assured them that I will find you and bring you home, where you belong, and I did."
Soul growled and looked down to avoid showing his face. He felt like biting something to release his anger. "I'm not staying." Soul growled.
His father blinked, "excuse me?"
Soul unintentionally slammed his fists against the table and looked, revealing his rage filled eyes as he growled like an angry animal. "I'm not staying. I left for a reason, and I'm not going to stay just because you said so – I'm not going to listen to your bullshit anymore!"
His father stared at him wide eyed, "Do you have any idea what you're saying?" he finally growled back, "You are my son, Soul. Unlike you, I don't make choices just because I want to – I chose what's best for you."
Soul stood up with his hands pressed against the table, "You fucking ruined my life!"
"You ruined your life. I gave you so many chances – any other person would have given up on you a long time ago."
It took Soul everything to restrain himself from attacking.
Lies.
All Lies.
Everything this man said is a lie. But what was he expecting? This was his father, after all.
"I did everything to help you, Soul."
Stop lying.
"As your father, I supported you all the way."
Stop it…
"I gave you chances, Soul. Even when you failed, I still gave you chances."
Stop it already…
"Even after you left, I will still give you a chance."
Stop…
"Even after you had shamed the family name time and time again, I will still give you a chance."
Enough…
"I'm giving you a chance, Soul."
Knock it off…
"We will be having a meeting with the Anderson's in a few days, and I want you to be on your best behavior. They still want you to marry their daughter in the future. They original wanted Wes, but he has his hands full and doesn't have the time."
Please…
"As soon as you have a son, send him to me. I will raise him properly, and I'll make sure he doesn't make any mistakes –"
"SHUT UP!" Soul screamed and punched the table hard enough to knock over the cups on it. "SHUT THE FUCK UP!" His hands were trembling from both anger and sadness. Not cool. His father was doing it again. Using him like a tool, and nothing more. Memories started flooding his head. He tried his best to please his father, but no matter how much he tried, he was no match for his brother. As a child, playing the piano was like a game for Soul, but it slowly turned into a competition for attention, and Wes always won. Because Wes was everyone's favorite, Soul was always ignored. He remembered how his so called father beat him for playing a dark tune on stage instead of the one he gave him, and he would force him to practice over, and over until his fingers start to hurt and his eyes would hardly open while his father stood right next to him, slapping him whenever he missed a note. He would do anything to keep his reputation and money raising.
Greedy? Yes.
Loving father? Not so much.
Soul loved his mother, but she was too in love with his father, so much so that she would agree to everything her husband says.
Wes was the perfect child that his parents were proud of. Soul never felt any connection to his brother. Even when Wes would try to bond with him, Soul only felt hatred towards him. Wes never did anything wrong, but he was still the reason why Soul was ignored.
Wes was treated like a king, while Soul continued trying to please his father…
"Shut up…" Soul breathed, "Why the fuck can't you just leave me alone?"
"Soul, this is for the best. It's time to make good use of yourself. This will be fine for both you and us–"
"BULLSHIT!" Soul snapped again, but this time, he reserved a loud smack to his face. He was suddenly pulled up by his collar and was face to face with the man.
"You do not talk to me like that. You are my son, and you will do as I say." He growled angrily, "You didn't leave, you ran away like a coward, Soul." He smirked, "A coward. Is that what you are, Soul? Instead of facing your fears, you decided to run away, right?"
His wife gently grabbed his arm, "Dear, please stop. Don't you think that's enough?" she asked nervously before being shoved away.
"Stay out of this!" He growled at her.
"Fuck you!" Soul shouted at the sight of his mother being pushed away.
Suddenly sensing something wrong, Soul's father turned and noticed Wes had entered the room, he quickly releases Soul and turned to the older brother, who looked calm even after briefly seeing what had happened.
"Father, Mr. William is looking for you downstairs." Wes said calmly.
"He's finally here?" The father said while he fixed his tie, "Good. Wes, watch Soul for me – I'll be back soon." He said before leaving like nothing happened.
Soul looked at his brother and sighed, "You lied, didn't you?"
"I had to do something. He sounded pretty angry." Wes said.
"You were listening?" Soul asked, but he already knew the answer.
"Well, I heard yelling." He scratched the back of his neck, "Your friend is in the next room, by the way."
Soul sighed. He felt a hand on his shoulder, "Soul? Are you okay, sweetie?" His mother asked voice filled with worry.
Her hand slipped off as he started walking away, "Yeah… Fine…"
He caught Wes starring at him with sympathy as he passed by, "Just… fine."
Who's going to care anyway?
