Revised Chapter (4)
Sam was tired: these past few days since Mercedes' arrival he had not gotten much sleep. But he could not refuse Mrs Jones when she invited him to breakfast even if his body as crying for some much-needed rest, especially since he did wake them up at 3 am by throwing rocks at their window.
Sam and the Jones sat around the table filled with breakfast goodies made by Mercedes and her mother. He sat next to his girlfriend trying his best to keep his eyes open while eating.
"So, Sam, when are you and I having a man to man?" Mr Jones asked.
"Uhm, whenever you want Mr Jones," Sam said.
Mercedes' father was a nice man, but he still intimidated Sam somewhat. Mr Jones approached things jokingly but there was a truth to what he said when one peeled off the layers of his words. He respected the man, therefore, Sam wanted him to approve of their relationship.
"No hanky panky with my daughter."
Mercedes could only bury her face in her hands and hide behind a veil of hair in embarrassment as Sam chocked on a piece of bacon next to her. Her father always had a knack for embarrassing her.
"I just don't want any caramel children out of wedlock," he explained.
His wife gently hit him with an amused smile playing on her lips as Sam who sat across from her, sipped orange juice to wash down the bacon
"I'm kidding, I'm kidding. Why are you all so sensitive anyway?"
Mercedes thought it would be for the best to make Sam leave before her father could get the chance to embarrass her and Sam even more. She got to her feet pulling Sam up who was in the middle of drinking his juice causing some of it to spill as she did so.
"Sam has to go: he did not get much sleep last night, right babe?"
Sam awkwardly rubbed the back of his head.
"Yeah, uh bye, Mr and Mrs Jones."
Both her parents bid him a farewell.
Once outside Sam wrapped his arms around her waist with a yawn. Mercedes could not help but think about how cute he looked with his ruffled hair that gave him a boyish appearance. He gave her a tired smile as he leaned down to press his lips against her mouth. Warmth spread through her body: from the tip of her toes to the top of her head. She had kissed some frogs these past few years but those kisses could never solicit such a response- it was like his lips were specially designed to fit with hers. Just as Sam was about to deepen the kiss somebody cleared their throat causing the couple to pull apart.
"No, let me not interrupt, please continue," her father said. "I'm just getting my morning paper."
Mercedes rolled her eyes and told Sam to just leave before her father makes it worst. She and her father watched Sam's car pull out of the driveway and drove away. Once he disappeared from sight Mercedes glared at her father.
"Why are you like this?"
Her father grinned.
"It's so much fun riling you up. But seriously that kiss made me so uncomfortable. You two were smooching like it's the end of the world."
"Whatever, Dad."
"-Seriously who kisses like that in public?-"
"That was an innocent peck."
"Your mother and I didn't kiss like that in a public space when we were young!"
Mercedes rolled her eyes as her mother joined them
"You two suck face all the time and by the way, this is private property."
"This is my private property so I'm allowed to suck face with whomever I want, thank you very much."
Mercedes rolled her eyes and went back inside the house to go back to bed with a soft grin stretched over her lips.
"You should be sleeping," Mercedes said as she climbed into Sam's car. "You look like you need rest."
He had left her home five hours ago to go to get some much-needed rest after nearly two days of spending time with her and their friends (mostly her though). Alas, all their friends were rarely in town, thus they took each opportunity presented before them to hang out together.
"Do, I look that bad," he joked as he pulled out of her driveway.
"No, I did not say that now did I?" Mercedes said running her eyes over his glorious body.
He was dressed casually in blue jeans and a t-shirt, but her ex-model boyfriend could make a potato sack look good. The bag under his eyes was the only signal of his lack of sleep.
"It's a curse looking this good," he joked.
Mercedes rolled her eyes at his vanity but said nothing as he drove them to the park to meet up with the rest of their friends for a reunion barbeque.
"So, how are we going to tell the others?" Mercedes asked breaking the comfortable silence between them.
"Maybe we can hire a blimp with the word 'Samcedes' followed by a heart." Sam joked making her laugh. Sam took her small hand in his resting it on his thigh. Something as simple as holding her hand made his body react in ecstasy.
Mercedes tightened her hand around his with a gentle smile directed at him.
"Or we could just, wait for it, tell them," Mercedes proposed.
Sam pulled a disappointed puppy dog face.
"You ruin my fun. Where is the imagination in that?"
"Sammy, you already have me," she said gently. "There's no need for ridiculously romantic gestures anymore."
Sam pretended to choke on the statement, pretending to be offended.
"Do you even know me? Romantic gestures are part of my DNA, Mercedes."
She laughed at him raising her free hand in surrender. A few minutes later the site of manicured grass and the smiling faces of their friends as they sat on the all in one picnic benches and tables. Play sets and sand pits decorated the background. Mr Shue, Puck and Jake were manning the grill station. Kurt and Tina were placing bowls of salads and desserts on an extra long table laughing and joking around.
The couple opted to let their friends come up with their own conclusion as the tightly held on to each other's hands while walking towards the tables. The familiar and unfamiliar faces (of people who had join glee club after they graduated) all turned to them but the couple ignored the stares. Mercedes greeted Kurt and Tina.
"Where is Rachel?" She asked as Sam tightened his hold on her hand.
Kurt rolled his eyes.
"Busy signing autographs because-and I quote- 'being a Broadway star doesn't take a break; not even for reunions'." He then focused his attention on Sam. "Blaine and Artie are unloading a few things from the car if you're wondering..."
That was Kurt's way of politely asking Sam to leave; luckily he got the memo and kissed his girlfriend on her cheek before disappearing to go find his best friend.
"Okay, when did that-" Kurt gestured Sam "-happen?
"I wanna know too," Tina said next to Kurt.
Kurt continued ignoring Tina's interruption.
"Sam was still dating 'Juice Girl' five days ago and now you two are together? Look, I love him but I love you more and I don't want you to be a rebound for him-"
"Kurt, I love you too and I know you care but you really got to butt out of my relationship."
"Oh, snap," Tina said before taking a gulp of her drink and enjoying the show about to unfold. A part of her was proud of Mercedes for sticking up for her relationship for once.
Kurt gasped at her irritated tone. Here he was trying to protect her from the endless cycle of the confusion that was the 'Samcedes' relationship. Seriously, one moment they were together; the next they would break-up. Plus there was the fact that Sam was not emotionally mature at all; the fact that he was never in a relationship that lasted more than two months and that he still watched Spongebob was a testament to that. Mercedes needed someone mature who could support her emotionally.
Don't get Kurt wrong, he did love Sam- like a brother-in-law. Because of 'Blam's' close relationship the blonde grew on him but that did not mean that he was blind to the guy's commitment issues. Kurt just did not want his best friend to get hurt- that's all.
Mercedes sighed seeing the hurt expression on her best friend's face.
"Kurt, I didn't mean it like that. You're making it sound like Sam and I just walked into each other's life after meeting on the street and just decided to get serious all of a sudden. We're not strangers; we've known each other for nine years, Kurt. Even though we have history we still remained friends through all these years so we know each other well." Mercedes gently explains. "I know you're trying to protect my heart but you don't have to- it's Sam we are talking about here. Like seriously, as if Sam would hurt me purposely."
"I know he wouldn't. I just don't want you both to get hurt if things don't work out. It will be awkward with the whole being godparents to Nick thing."
Tina could not help but comment on Kurt's statement. Sam was also her friend and she would not idly sit back and listen to him paint him in such a negative light.
"Kurt you're making it sound as if Sam was the one who broke up with her each time. If I remember correctly Mercedes, no offence love, was the one to break them up every time once things got tough."
Mercedes threw the Asian woman a look which she shrugged off.
"We talk sometimes" She explained before taking a sip of lemonade "And I call it like I see it."
Mercedes rolled her eyes at Tina but could do and say little to rebuff therefore she rather opted to continue her conversation with Kurt and ignore her.
"When have a thing between Sam and me ever been awkward?" She asked.
"When he started dating Britney you two barely acknowledged each other." He said smartly.
"That was years ago- we were still teenagers that time."
Kurt just raised an eyebrow but said nothing, therefore, prompting her to continue
" Stop having so little faith in us- I kinda feel offended," Mercedes said with a chuckle even though it was true. "I love him, Kurt, and he loves me. Do we have everything figured out? No, but love is enough for me so it will have to be enough for you."
Kurt raised his hands in surrender.
"Fine but if Kentucky Fried Stripper-" Mercedes giggled. "-messes this up I have a tube of hair removal cream with his name on- and I'm not just talking about his blond locks, I'm talking about eyebrows, leg hair the works. He'll look like a naked mole rat when I'm done with him."
"Remind me never to get on your bad side," Tina joked.
His car was parked outside the Jones residence. The two lovers sat in the car neither wanting to leave each other. Mercedes' head was resting on Sam's shoulders as they watched the red and orange painted skies as the sun was already romancing the horizon. A loud yawn coming from Sam filled the air.
"Sam, you have to go to bed," Mercedes said sitting up.
Sam did not like that so he snaked his arm around her waist to keep her in his grasp.
"We are supposed to be on a date now," Sam said as he rested his chin on the top of her head and slowly fell asleep.
Mercedes gave a small sad smile while wrapping her arms around his waist. She finally realized why Sam was so adamant about spending as much time with her as possible. She used her thumb to gently draw circles on his side rib.
"You are so sweet," she whispered. "But there's no need ram as many dates as you possibly can into a few days just to make up for lost time. I'm not going anywhere, love."
Sam only now realized that was just what he was doing; he was so afraid of her leaving him again. His relationships with Mercedes were always so short and therefore they were always rushed. He always threw as much as he could of himself into their love because of the fear that it would soon end; that the love would not be enough….that he would not be enough.
"You're right."
"I always am."
Sam chuckled at her reply. Thereafter a comfortable silence hung between them for a few minutes before Sam decided to break it.
"I really need to go get some sleep."
Mercedes unwrapped herself from him before leaning forward to kiss him. She lost herself in him as she always did when he kissed her. She pulled away when she heard the front door open.
"I said not caramel babies out of wedlock."
Mercedes stuck her tongue out at her father before pressing her palms to Sam's cheeks and giving him a long gentle peck on his lips.
"Get some sleep."
"Night."
She then proceeded to get out of his car with a playfully annoyed look directed at her father. She slid past her father and asked.
"Why are you like this?"
"It's fun." He said with a grin following behind her as Sam pulled out of the driveway.
