A/N: It's been four years since my last update. The real world has taken toll on me and along with it was the loss of my muse. But because I keep remembering my precious readers, I decided to continue on. :D

GUIDE # 5: Skull's Predicament
…:[]:…
The house was once again filled with peaceful silence. It was as if nothing happened two days ago. Skull admitted to himself that he pulled quite a stunt and was proud of it, but there was more meaning in what happened at that time to him. Let's just say…
…he was greatly conflicted.
Conflicted in a way that Luce had taken in a child and he was confused why a princess would be taking that bastard. Well, not that Luce was really a princess, but he considered her as one; and with all the hardships that Luce had experienced, he couldn't convince himself that Luce was able to move on that fast. Plus, the moment he saw that child, he felt something stir in him – something that was bound to resurface, which he desperately locked away. He shook his head. He didn't want to remember it now.
Apparently so, he had a day off because Fujiwara had a lot of scheduled interviews, so the crew decided to postpone the taping. Because of that, he was forced to stay at home and Reika wanted him to take a full blown rest. Yep, he needed rest, but he couldn't because he kept seeing Luce's cheerful face.
And he couldn't decide if that face was scary or not.
Currently, he was (secretly) watching Luce cook breakfast. He was not usually one to wake up so early, but this one morning was probably caused by recent events. For that matter, he took the liberty to look around and fortunately, he couldn't see the spawn of evil that he was always dreading to meet every day. When he saw Luce was about to turn, he quickly averted his eyes and looked at the ceiling.
However, Luce was not dense.
Sensing Skull looking her, the head of the Arcobaleno Household couldn't help but chuckle to herself. She was happy to know that Skull deeply cared for her despite him being the youngest. She continued cooking breakfast and put hotdogs on the rectangular plate while humming.
While Luce was on the kitchen work, Skull heard three pairs of footsteps descending from the stairs and headed to the dining area. The owners of these pairs of feet sat on the chairs with a solemn yet slightly surprised look as they spotted their youngest. The young actor looked at them in confusion and saw one of them slowly grinning.
"So, the almighty Skull is awake at this hour?" Colonello asked in a teasing tone. He propped up his elbow on the table and put his chin on his open palm.
"I didn't know the idiot crybaby could wake up this early." Verde said in an almost murmur, simply because he was preoccupied with the latest discovery he had come upon by mixing two elements in his cultured bacteria.
Skull huffed and crossed his arms, "I'm not a crybaby! And even I can wake up early." he protested and looked away. "Besides, I have to do a lot of things today. I have no time to play with you bullies."
"And the almighty Skull says a kiddie word. How usual." Reborn, the fourth one to arrive, commented as he sat beside the third person who was still silent. The said professor looked at this silent person and noticed the eye bags that were present. He raised his eyebrow and said, "Let me guess, you put on an all-nighter again, huh, Lal?"
Lal was looking grumpier than her usual gruff self. True to Reborn's words, she had dark circles under her eyes and she looked a bit pale from lack of sleep. Her eyes were narrowed to the table and at any moment, her head could fall off and looked like she would eventually sleep. But then, her seatmate, namely Colonello, had other plans. With a grin on his face, he leaned in and kissed Lal's cheek, much to the spartan engineer's horror and widened eyes.
That kiss seemed to be an effective sleep remover.
"GAH! COLONELLO! HOW DARE YOU DO THIS TO YOUR SUPERIOR?!" Lal roared out as soon as Colonello flew out of his chair and dashed out of the house with a silly grin on his face. As a result, Lal chased the insolent trainer to the ends of their house.
The remaining occupants of the dining area sighed in exasperation. Sure thing, Lal denied Colonello, but everyone could see the twinkle in her eyes whenever Colonello paid attention to her. The idiot trainer Colonello didn't know what 'stay put' meant when it came to Lal.
It's like what Verde always said: opposites do attract like a magnet.
Lal and Colonello were the perfect example. And in Reborn's terms, they were an idiot couple.
Soon enough, Fon and Viper went to the dining area together and sat on the empty chairs. Fon's hair was freely flowing down onto his back, making him look like Princess Kaguya, while Viper was like a witch who just returned from her daily trip to Halloween Town. Skull snorted at the way Viper looked and like the ever ready artist she was, she threw five art scalpels towards the actor, embedding to the wall that was near Luce.
"Viper-dear," Luce called sweetly without even looking, perfectly sensing the annoyed aura that Viper emitted. "Scalpels are not morning greeters. Please put them away."
Viper grunted and went towards the wall, plucking the scalpels and sat on her chair. Fon followed suit and just patted Viper's shoulder. On the other hand, Skull was sniggering for having witnessing the scolding Luce did to Viper, although…
"And Skull-dear," Luce said, flipping a piece of ham, "It's unhealthy to make fun of someone who doesn't have enough vitamins in the morning."
"Yes, Luce." Skull said, earning a few snorts from Reborn.
"What an idiot." Reborn commented under his breath.
"I am not!"
"Now, now, friends," Luce started as she placed a plate of ham covered in honey and topped with pineapples on the table, "I don't want you to bicker in front of the table, so I suggest to keep your colorful statements to yourself for a while, okay?"
The group nodded and just in time, Lal and Colonello returned from their early morning chase; although they found it amusing to see Colonello sporting an angry red hand mark on his left cheek, assuming that Lal had slapped him hard. Now that they were complete at the table, Luce didn't hesitate to put the other plates and pour orange juice on the glasses in front of them, except for Reborn and Verde who preferred coffee. Luce sat after and ate her own share.
…:[]:…
Later that day, Skull saw Luce working on her newest laptop in the living room. There was also a thick stack of papers placed neatly a few inches away from her, her pencil case that had a squirrel pattern on it and her favorite tea sitting next to her. Sometimes, he wondered how Luce was able to cope with all the hardships that she had experienced and yet was still able to show that very warm and kind smile to all the people around her. Come to think of it, he never heard her blame anyone, not even her kidnappers for the death of her baby due to miscarriage. She kept everything to herself until Reborn and Fon were able to knock some sense to her. He smiled bitterly as he watched Luce type.
'I'm so envious…'
"Skull-dear, what are you doing there, stoned?" Luce asked knowingly without looking behind her. Skull immediately froze and pretended not to hear her, to which Luce knew better. And so, she stopped typing and faced the direction where Skull was. "Skull, do you want to talk?"
Defeated, Skull walked away from the post and approached Luce with an expression of embarrassment. "Sorry, Luce. I didn't mean to watch you. I was just–!" He cut off his own sentence when he saw Luce's serene smile. Sometimes he hated that part of Luce because she could see through him.
"Your expression is clearly saying that you want to ask me something, Skull." Luce said as-a-matter-of-factly. She fixed the thin pile of papers in front of her and attached a clip, before putting it on top of the thicker pile at the side. She looked at Skull again and ushered him to sit. "We have this chance to talk, dear. Come on, tell me what's on your mind."
Skull was hesitating at first, but he couldn't contain himself, especially when Luce was looking at him intently with that expecting smile of hers. "Well…" he started, trying his best to make himself comfortable. "I was just wondering why you decided to take care of that mongrel."
He was actually expecting Luce to reprimand him for using the mongrel word, but when he looked deep into Luce's gaze, he couldn't see any retaliation from their kind leader. He felt scared all of a sudden when Luce's smile suddenly grew an inch.
"Why, Luce?" Skull asked a little harsher, testing to see if Luce would bite him back. "Even though you have told us your side, I still couldn't understand why you would…" He paused, trembled and fought back the impending rush of tears as memories of the past came haunting him again. But then, Luce's expression didn't change. Instead, her warmth turned more inviting, understanding the pain that he felt.
"I understand you, Skull," Luce started, her smile never leaving her face. "But I should ask you this instead: why do you keep on dwelling in the past? That kid is not the same as you."
Skull looked at Luce horrifically and he trembled. "H-How do you know that…?" he asked softly, the tears in his eyes threatening to fall. "H-How c-can you…j-just…just say…"
"Because you are different, Skull." Luce said and stood, walking towards him and cupped his cheeks. She rubbed his right cheek dearly with her thumb and smiled at him warmly, "We all have differences. True that his current stature is somewhat alike to yours, but didn't you even look in the future of what he might possibly become if you, if all of us, take care of him?" she asked, and then walked back to the couch. She took a picture that was pressed in between her reference books and handed it over to Skull.
The stuntman's eyes grew wide.
The picture showed the little boy looking so happy while adoring one of the motorbikes that he usually used during his tapings. Knowing Luce, she must have showed the kid his wide array of collections and he deduced that the kid didn't have any clue that it belonged to him. His hands shook and let the picture fell to the ground.
"Try to get to know him," Luce said softly as she patted his head. "You might see that he is very much different from you." Then she went back to the couch and started typing again, eager to finish the next installment for her novel.
Skull stared at Luce with teary eyes, unable to say anything, and after a few seconds, he walked away with mixed emotions. He wouldn't just give in.
…:[]:…
The next day…
"Oh come in, come in!" Luce cheerfully said as she opened the door for the familiar child who was holding a rather big bag of odd gears. "You have quite a load there. Do you want me to help you?"
As expected, the child didn't exactly understand what the woman before her was talking about, but when he saw the hand signal the woman was making towards his bag, he looked down at it first before giving it to her.
Luce groaned a bit at the heaviness of the bag and her smile was quite strained. "How…did you even manage to carry it here?" she mumbled. The child merely stared as he tilted his head sideways in wonder. Luce found it so adorable and she willed herself not to drop the bag and squeeze the life out of the child with a big hug.
"Well, you have good timing." Luce said, offering her free hand to the child, who was staring at it now, "I just finished cooking. I bet you smelled my cooking again, didn't you?"
The child nodded. It seemed that it was the only thing he did understand – anything about food.
Not to mention, he hadn't eaten for a day, and he forgot to visit this house three days ago because of a circumstance called 'stalking Reborn in his school'. Once inside, he enjoyed the food that Luce had prepared for him and the writer couldn't be any happier at what she was seeing. She just hoped that the child would talk to her. After the nice lunch, the kid politely bowed and went out of the house, leaving behind his sack of things. She smiled.
It's just a good thing that most of the family members were not around, except for Skull who was locked into his room, sick.
…:[]:…
And the following day, the kid returned.
"Why are you here again?" Skull asked rudely as he looked down at the annoying little kid in front of him. He saw that the kid was carrying a bag filled with odd things inside.
The kid just stared at him, though he bowed his head in greeting. He always saw that action from the cashiers at the convenience store he frequently visited.
Skull snorted mockingly and pointed his hand on the bag, saying, "You come here to just load that trash of yours here? Sorry, brat, but we don't accept garbage."
The kid didn't budge, not understanding what the other was saying.
Skull was about to speak again when he heard the door open. He looked behind him and saw Luce happily skipping towards them and scooped the kid.
"You're back again!" Luce said aloud, excited and happy, and ruffled the kid's sticky hair (not that she minded). "It's just yesterday you were here and–"
"What?!" Skull exclaimed, making the kid cower a bit. "That filthy brat was here yesterday?! How don't I know anything about this?!"
Luce didn't mind the harsh words Skull threw at the kid and just kept hugging him. She answered Skull amusingly, "Because you had a very high fever yesterday. Come to think of it, why are you up already, hm?"
Skull gulped. He knew how Luce could be scary when her orders were disobeyed, especially when it concerned the health of the residents of the Arcobaleno House. But he steeled himself and looked at the child, "I heard noise outside so I opened the door." he said in between greeted teeth.
"Curiosity gets you a lot these days, Skull." Luce said amusingly. "Though, there is nothing wrong with it. But I hope your curiosity also comes with accepting. Kids are humans too; and being humans, once someone visits, they are treated guests. Okay?" She added and looked at the stuntman with unreadable, happy eyes.
Skull could only swallow his guts to maim the child, right here, right now.
And with that, he wasn't able to do anything but to watch Luce talk to the child, who was not responding at all. But he could see that undeniable interest in the child's eyes as he listened to Luce. 'He seems to understand…but why wasn't he responding…?' Skull asked himself mentally, though he immediately shook his head when he realized what he was thinking. 'Why should I even care for a brat?' he supplied internally.
On the other hand, the child left his load at the foyer of the house and Skull felt like throwing it outside, but his slight fever was keeping him from doing it. He clicked his tongue and walked inside. The child was seated on the spare chair at the dining area (much to Skull's relief), but the stuntman frowned when he saw the child sitting near his chair. He growled and wanted to shove him away, but Luce came into view so he couldn't do the deed. He huffed. Why was it so hard?
'Why do you even want to scare him away…?' a tiny voice whispered inside Skull's head.
Skull couldn't comprehend. Why indeed? He watched the child being fed by Luce. He could see the smiles that he rarely saw nowadays from her. It was a miracle because of the child and at the same time, her natural capacity to smile despite problems. He frowned a little.
"Skull-dear, I hate breaking your trance over there, but you don't mind joining us for a snack, do you?" Luce asked sweetly as she fed the little mongrel.
Skull groaned inwardly. He hated being so easy to read.
…:[]:…
Three days later, Reborn found Luce walking to and fro with a worried frown. At first, he thought that it would be best to just leave her alone, but the series of twists and turns made him dizzy and he was wondering if Luce wasn't getting tired of doing it. So, he decided to put it to a stop.
"Luce, you're making me dizzy."
Luce twitched a little as she heard Reborn's voice and looked at him. She was still sporting that worried look on her face. "Sorry, Reborn-dear…"
Reborn took a slice of pancake and ate it, then he asked, "What's bothering you this early morning?"
"I'm worried about the child."
Reborn raised an eyebrow. "That filthy brat? You're actually worried about that brat?"
Luce looked aghast. "How could you ask that way? Of course I'd be worried. I'm helping him, remember? And besides, aren't you wondering where he could have been? It's been three days!"
Come to think of it, Reborn rarely saw the child anymore. Before, he would not miss the silhouette of the child hiding by the bushes at the school from his office. He couldn't understand why the child would insist on following him every single day until dismissal time, then after that he would notice the child stalking him at the convenience store that both he and the child frequented at. If he was just any lesser guy, he would have shot the child down and threw him to the sea. But, scratch that. Luce would have his head if he did that. Now, he couldn't see the child. It had been a week for him since he last saw the child.
Wait—
"You mean to say, Luce, that the brat was dropping by this house every day?"
"Precisely," Luce confirmed. "Well, I'm sure that the child has nowhere to go to find food, and I'll be more delighted if he would come here every day since I can watch him eat proper food, and not the food inside the garbage cans."
"But does he really need to go here, inside?"
"Yes. Of course." Luce said with finality. "He is my guest and I will do anything to make him comfortable. Not to mention, Fong has been keeping an eye around the kid too. I can say that he found something interesting on the child."
Reborn groaned. "Fong, huh."
Luce smiled brightly. "I know, right? And it will be harder for you guys to shoo him away since Fong is calling dibs on the kid." she said and chuckled, "No pun intended." she added.
"Whatever. Just don't let him touch any of my stuff or I'll feed him to Leon."
"Reborn! That's cruel of you." Luce chided and pouted. "But I'm sure Leon won't do it. He is a nice chameleon."
Reborn just shook his head and resumed eating. A good pancake should not be wasted, especially if it was stacked with more pancakes.
Suddenly, Luce's editor, Chion, stormed inside, panting and a bit pale. He held onto the archway of the dining area and looked at Luce. "L-Luce-san! It…I…It's Skull-sama…"
Luce and Reborn looked to him with alarm and the princess of the household willed herself not to haste. "W-What about Skull?"
"H-He was in an accident. And there was a kid on him."
Luce looked at Reborn with a horrified expression and the latter knew what was coming next. He wasted no time, called the school that he wouldn't be present, and promised Kami-sama that he would give Skull a piece of hard advice once they reached the hospital.
He must admit, the child didn't deserve to be in an accident.
With a resolved look, he faced the editor with hawk-like eyes and said, "Take us there."
…:[]:…
Hours later…
Skull was pacing back and forth just outside of the emergency room. His eyebrows were creased, lips trembled and his hands, filled with blood, were shaking in both worry and fear. He was also confused. He didn't understand what had happened and why it had happened. Everything was so fast that even him, a stuntman who was used to accidents, couldn't comprehend. He was afraid, really afraid.
He was afraid for the owner of the blood covering his hands – the child whom he despised days ago.
Soon after, the doctor emerged from the sickeningly white double doors of the emergency room, removing her face mask and turning to the actor. She had this unreadable but calm expression on her face and Skull couldn't tell if it was good or a bad news. Seeing her sigh, he waited for the description of the child's condition.
"Are you the child's father?" she asked.
Skull looked at the doctor incredulously. In what way was he a father to the child? The hair should be a hint already. However, he still answered, "No. I'm not. But…" Then he looked to the side, biting his lips as if he was preventing something to coming out of his mouth.
"But what?" the doctor asked.
Skull closed his eyes tightly and said, "…the child is under my care."
The doctor seemed suspicious of what the actor had said, but for the sake of the poor child, she let it slide. Clearing her throat, she said, "The child is out of danger. However, he sustained heavy wounds and has a fracture on his leg. We managed to fix it, but he won't be able to walk for a while."
"So…he's okay." Skull said.
The doctor nodded.
"C-Can I see him?"
"We'll be transferring him to the recovery ward now. You can just fol—"
"Wait." Skull interrupted. "Please, put him in a suite. His fellow guardians wouldn't be very happy if they found their charge in a regular room."
The doctor nodded and excused herself. For now, Skull was relieved, but he felt an ominous air lingering. He knew he would be in serious danger once everyone knew what happened.
…:[]:…
There was a man hidden in the shadows watching the famous Arcobaleno family leave the house in haste, grinning from ear to ear as he finally located where they live. It looked like the plan was slowly getting into action. But like what his boss had told him, they would have to wait.
A seed properly nurtured was indeed a good harvest, right?
…:[]:…
Reika, Skull's personal assistant, had managed to contact Luce and tell her the name of the hospital they were in. Luce thanked the sweet assistant and told everyone – as in everyone (that meant those still in their workplaces needed to abandon work and answer her call) – to go to the hospital.
It was an agonizing thirty minute drive towards the hospital. Luce was being uncharacteristically silent, which Reborn swore would be the last thing he wanted to see. Honestly, he was also curious of how that brat ended up with the hateful stuntman. It was already impossible for the child and Skull to be mixed in one house and this happened. He sighed. Somehow, he wanted to know how the child was, because if anything happened, Skull would definitely be on Luce's number one target list.
That was something that needed to be avoided.
Once at the hospital, Luce and Reborn immediately met with Reika and she led them towards the room Skull and the child in. The head of the house was still eerily quiet and both Reika and Reborn decided to not comment on it, lest their near future destruction. Reika softly knocked on the door thrice before opening it slowly, revealing a downcast Skull looking at the bed.
"Skull-san?" Reika called softly. "Luce-san and Reborn-sensei are here." She was just rewarded with a nod, making her sigh. "I'll be just outside…Excuse me." Then she left.
Once the door clicked shut, Luce and Reborn approached Skull. It was a surprise that Reborn did not hit Skull and he instead sat on the couch.
"Skull-dear," Luce called and patted Skull's shoulder lightly. "Are you hurt?"
Skull shook his head and said, "I'm not..."Then he lowered his head further. "I'm sorry, Luce…"
Luce smiled a little and looked at the child on the bed. "How is he?"
"The doctor said that the kid had fractured his leg, but it's all fixed now. She advised that the kid should not walk for a while." Skull said, and his shoulders shook. "I…I didn't expect him to…"
Reborn was actually getting annoyed at the actor for being such a wimp. And so he said, "Go home, lackey and fix yourself. Tell us what happened tomorrow."
Luce looked at Reborn and showed a small smile, "You have classes tomorrow, Reborn."
Reborn snorted, not replying, and shooed Skull away. "Go now, lackey, before I change my mind and have you in bed too."
Skull made no reply, but he complied. Once the actor was gone, Luce sighed deeply and dropped to the chair that was previously Skull's.
"You need to rest too, Luce." Reborn said, straightening himself and looking at the sleeping child. "I can handle everything here."
Luce looked at Reborn and smiled, "Maa, Reborn, not that I don't trust you, but with your current skill, I doubt you could take care of the child." she teased, making Reborn look to the side and blush in embarrassment.
"Whatever, Luce."
…:[]:…
At home, Skull was found sitting at the couch. Colonello and Lal wondered what was wrong with the usually noisy feller. They passed by him and after a few moments, Fong and Mammon arrived, but since both of them were carrying grocery bags, they passed by Skull after a quick greeting (and a light insult from Mammon about wasting electricity in the living room) and went straight to the kitchen counter.
The third time that someone noticed Skull on the couch was Verde, complete with his lab coat and suitcase. He raised an eyebrow and asked, "Are you trying to show us how much of unproductive species you are, Skull?"
Skull didn't reply and Verde's interest was piqued. This was certainly a rare day. The almighty Skull was not doing anything stupid. He continued to observe Skull's behavior as he put his coat and case on one vacant sofa then tried to gain the purple haired actor's attention. Suddenly, loud, angry steps approached the living room, making Verde look at the source, only to see Mammon striding towards Skull with a sack in one hand.
"Oi. Skull." she called in a low tone. When Skull ignored her call, she grunted and said, "Look at me or I'll make you pay with your life."
Sighing, Skull looked at Mammon and it caught her off guard. Skull's eyes seemed to lack the usual shine and vigor. Mammon looked at Verde for a moment, who shrugged, and looked back at Skull. She focused on the matter at hand, "Is this yours?" she asked, holding a seemingly heavy sack. "It has old gears and stuff like the rubber you use for the wheel."
"What?" Skull asked in surprise and hastily stood, taking the sack from the artist and looked inside. He couldn't believe that Mammon was right – the sack was filled with different kinds of gears, spare parts of a vehicle and rubbers for the wheel. And if his memory served him correctly, this was what the child was carrying the day when he was sick.
His tears finally fell.
…:[]:…
It had been three days since the accident and no one in the Arcobaleno Household could have ever imagined that the once child-hater Skull make a full 180 degree turn. He returned to work, much to Fujiwara's relief (because he was seriously worried about him and definitely admired his action stunts), and performed very well. Reika was relieved that Skull was able to return to his old self – the smiling, joking and energetic Skull whom the reapers hate because of his death-defying stunts – but she noticed that something changed in him as well.
Like now.
"Good work, Skull-san," Director Matsunagi jovially praised Skull, who was blushing in embarrassment. Fujiwara patted him on the back and praised him too, "That was a wonderful stunt! You need to teach me that next time."
"If you're up for it, then sure, why not, Fujiwara-san?" Skull replied with vigor laughed along. There were a few more exchanges of words between the actors and staff until Skull's watch beeped.
It was three o'clock.
"I'm sorry to break this fun talk, but I have to go home now." Skull said, his smile still present, but Reika noticed that it shone brighter than before.
Ah.
Reika immediately handed Skull's coat to him and his water bottle. "We're set to go."
Director Matsunagi nodded and patted his back again in delight. "Keep this up, Skull and this will definitely be a hit."
Skull nodded in return and smiled again. "Of course, Director! I'll see you guys tomorrow!"
…:[]:…
"I can't believe I'm doing this." Reborn complained to himself while he checked some one-page essays. The university had given him a week off after learning the current situation he was in and he swore that the perpetual annoyance coming from his co-workers wouldn't die anytime soon. 'I should probably just shoot them all,' he thought darkly, but he immediately dismissed it too.
At one end of the house, Luce was practically singing bright songs while flipping marinated pork to the pan. She was highly amused at the takeover of events, namely the child. Speaking of him, he was resting peacefully near Reborn and it brought great entertainment to the Head of the household. As a sadist, she might be on occasion, she liked to see an overthrown Reborn from time to time. Ten points for the sleeping child.
"Luce," Reborn said darkly, "Are you done yet? I still need to finish checking."
"Oh bah, Reborn." Luce retorted, "I'm making a delicious dish here, so don't disturb me. And, as I see it, you're quite comfortable in there. You can even check papers while the kid is with you."
"How can you see this, woman?" The professor gritted his teeth, his words falling to a statement of irritation. "You'll pay for this."
"Let me see you try and I'll ban you from espresso~"
That effectively shut the professor up.
There was a bit of silence before everything went 'boom'. Skull appeared at the doorway, much to Reborn's chagrin, and greeted, "I'm home, everyone! The Almighty Skull is here!"
"Shut up, lackey. Do yourself a favor and hide, or I might just make your almightiness earn a hole." Reborn seethed. He was ignored and the actor just made a beeline towards the sleeping child.
"Hello there, little fella." Then he placed his palm on the child's smooth face. He smiled a little when the said child snuggled to the warmth that it radiated.
Reborn wished he could use his gun to straighten his lackey's softness, but alas, he denied that thought, finding this scene was rather refreshing.
