Just a heads up! This story will be ending in four chapters :) Chapter 30 will be the last chapter, but I'm definitely thinking about a sequel ;) because of how its going to end... Anyways! Please review and let me know if you would want a sequel and what you think is going to happen. Sorry about the wait! My boyfriend ended up having to stay with me for a few weeks to get some living arrangements sorted out. It was a little hard to get anything written then. Hope you're not too mad at me DX Love you guys! Enjoy!
Dean, Sam, and Cas were gone the next morning, so Adam and Meg gathered in the room with Candy to wait for then to return. Bobby had some information on demon omens in a town not that far from them. They went to inspect, leaving Candy in the hands of their younger brother and Meg. Adam spent most of his time watching some horror movie on T.V., while Candy carried laundry back and forth from the laundry mat across the street. Meg helped Candy occasionally, but mostly stayed behind to watch the movie with Adam.
Candy finished laundry and cleaned the room completely all in the time that Sam and Dean were gone. When they returned, Sam thanked her and kissed her on the forehead, while Dean dropped his dirty clothes on the floor and hopped in the shower. Cas and Meg went back into Meg's room, and Adam went back to his own, too. Candy grunted a little in disapproval, but picked up Dean's clothes anyways. Sam watched her folding clothes and placing them in drawers with a slight smile. He loved even watching her do the most mundane tasks, and for a moment, he decided to pretend that they were in their own house, in their own bedroom, and it was a Sunday. They were both off work on Sundays, in Sam's pretend world. Sam would be laying on the bed, waiting for her to get done putting away clothes so he could pull her down onto the bed and hold her against his chest until they both fell asleep for the Sunday afternoon nap.
"Sam?" Candy called his name, pulling him out of his fantasy. She was blinking at him in confusion, not sure what he was thinking about but knowing he was somewhere else in his mind. Sam sat up,
"What?"
"You just seemed like you were thinking about something," she shrugged her shoulders. "I wanted to make sure you were okay." She walked over to where he was sitting and pushed his long hair out of his face. "If you need to talk about something, even if it's something I don't really want to hear, you know you can tell me. You can always tell me what you're thinking, Sam."
"It's not important," he smiled up at her. "I promise."
"Everything you're thinking is important," Candy rebutted. "As long as it's not hurting you, I guess I don't need to know..." When she turned back around, Sam grabbed her hand. In one swift motion, he whirled her back around, wrapped his arms around her waist, and dragged her down onto the bed with him. Before she could push away, he turned over so that he was laying on top of her. He grabbed her wrists and pinned them down. "Sam?" Candy looked up at him questioningly. He leaned down and kissed her softly, then slowly moved his hand away from her wrists and pressed them into the mattress on each side of her head.
"Sorry," he sighed. "You just don't know what it's like to have to share your whole world with someone else. I share everything with Dean. The car, the motel rooms, our last name... Even you. There's nothing I can hold at night that I know belongs only to me. Something that... Something that I can take with me if I end up alone." Sam paused for a moment, then sat back on his knees. "Tell me something. If me and Dean got into a falling out, and we went our separate ways, who would you stay with? Because I don't think it'll be me." There was a look of sadness in his eyes that broke Candy's heart. The truth was that she had always been more partial to Dean, ever since Sam returned. However, she couldn't stand to lose either of them. She didn't know which she would choose if it came down to it.
"I couldn't lose either of you," she told him earnestly. Candy brushed his hair out of his eyes. "Don't make that face, Sam. I can't stand to see you look so hurt, and to know it's because of me, tears me up inside. You know I love you. I love both of you so much that I can't imagine life without you. If you and Dean fought, I'd do everything I can to bring you back together, to keep our little family together." Sam moved away from her so that she could sit up. As soon as she got up from the bed, she returned to taking care of the clothes.
"There was once a time when I knew that you would have followed me anywhere," Sam sighed heavily. "Sometimes, I wish I hadn't jumped into the pit with Adam. I wish I had just taken you and run for it."
"I would still follow you anywhere," Candy frowned, "but so would Dean. You saved the world, Sam, and your brother. I think what you did was absolutely heroic. You shouldn't want to take that away. You nearly single-handedly stopped the apocalypse."
"I didn't do it for Dean. Or for the world."
"What do you mean?"
"I jumped into that pit because I knew that it would save you. Michael and Lucifer both were willing to kill you or torture you if it meant getting what they wanted. Dean and I did our best to keep you hidden, which is why we moved around so much and sometimes dumped you in a bar while we traveled. It wasn't because you couldn't help us, although that was a little part of it." Sam sat on the end of the bed. "We were trying to hide you from them. We had someone looking out for you."
"You mean Cas."
"Yeah. Dean swears that's when he fell for you. Cas used to report to us about you all of the time, even for the simplest things like when you dyed your hair. The guy seemed completely obsessed with you for awhile."
"He's got Meg now."
"Things certainly changed while I was gone," Sam ignored her comment. "Can I ask you something? How did you and Dean... well... get together?"
"I was so broken after you were gone," she shrugged her shoulders. "I laid in bed at night and cried myself to sleep. Dean had only come back for me so I didn't think that you both had abandoned me there, you know? I didn't know anyone or have any place to stay. I don't think Lisa was too happy when he left after a week. She was hoping he'd stay there from now on."
"I forgot he went to Lisa."
"Yeah. She saw me during a case once, and I was with Dean. She stopped me to ask how I knew him, so I told her that I was your girlfriend. Dean was taking care of me since you were gone. It seemed to soothe her to think that Dean hadn't found someone else. Even though by then we were already involved... Anyways. After a few weeks of crying myself to sleep, Dean decided that it may help if I had someone in the bed next to me. I guess in a way, I could pretend it was you. After so long of being alone together, we just kind of naturally gravitated towards each other."
"I've never seen Dean love anyone like he loves you," Sam noted, and he wasn't at all surprised to see Candy smile the way she did then. Sam took a deep breath, then stood and kissed Candy's forehead. Just then, Dean came out of the bathroom dressed in his favorite grey tee shirt and a pair of his nice jeans. Candy brightened up a little when she saw him, which made Sam a little jealous.
"Man, a hot shower really hit the spot," Dean chuckled. "What's going on with you guys?"
"I think I'm about to go hit up the bar," Sam told him, catching Candy off guard. "I'm going to take the Impala if you don't mind." He snatched up the keys from the table by the door. "See you guys in a little bit."
Dean could tell when Sam closed the door and Candy's head fell that she felt like she was the reason Sam was leaving. He had spent so much time with her that he knew all of her little expressions and almost always what she was thinking. Candy was the kind of girl that wore her heart on her sleeve. It was one of the things that Dean liked about her, since he never liked the kind of girls that were too complicated to understand.
"What was that about?" He asked her.
"I don't think Sam wants to be with me anymore," Candy hugged the clothes to her chest. "He basically said that he knew I would choose you over him. He thought when he came back that me and him would be like we were before, and I think that he still thought that when we agreed to make this situation work. Now that he realized that it's not the same, I don't know if he wants to stay with me."
"Did he say that?"
"No, not directly."
"Then you're probably just overthinking," Dean tried to reassure her. "Sam is doing his mope thing that he does sometimes. He'll get over it, I promise." Candy smiled up at him half-heartedly, but Dean could still see the pain in her eyes. "He's the one who asked for this weird three-way relationship. It's been working out fine for him. He has exactly what he wanted."
"But it isn't what he wanted. At all. He wanted it to be like before, but it can't be. I love him, I do, but I love you, too. I love you so much, and I can't change that no matter how much he wants me to."
"Come here," Dean pulled her into his arms. He kissed her passionately, holding it to make Candy melt into it. He backed her onto the bed slowly, and he laid her back gently. "No matter what happens with Sam, I'll always be here, Candy. I love you. I'm not going anywhere." She looked up at him with teary eyes, then pulled him down into another kiss. Dean began unbuttoning her shirt while she worked to get his jeans undone. Once Dean was positioned where he needed to be, he paused.
"Dean," she moved her hips to try and push him into her. Dean held back.
"You know that I love you, right? More than anything."
"Of course," she scoffed.
"Good," he smiled. He pushed into her slowly, and grinned when she let out a long, pleasurable moan. As they made love, Candy forgot all about the things that had been causing her worry. Being in Dean's arms, feeling him caress her body with his fingertips, all of it chased away her bad thoughts. Once again, Dean had made it all better. He had made her forget about the pain and the heartbreak.
