Chapter 30:

Sam worked quickly to trace the location of the call. The sound of Candy screaming on the phone still rang in his ears, torturing him the longer he went without knowing she was okay. Dean hurried around the room, gathering up all of their things and preparing their weapons. Castiel and Meg were waiting for them outside. As soon as Sam found out where the call was made from, they grabbed all of their things and headed there as quickly as they possibly could.

It was a tiny little warehouse in Georgia. Nothing special or extraordinarily evil looking. Castiel armed Meg with an angel blade, while Dean and Sam grabbed their own weapons. This time, Crowley was going to pay for everything he had done. This time, they weren't going to leave until Crowley was dead or they were.

Their main goal firstly was to find Candy. They didn't talk about it, but all of them were scared for her safety. Sam had told them about the phone call, and it made Dean and Castiel's hearts stop in their chests. Each of them had their own mental images of what was happening to Candy, but all of them knew that she had to be their first priority.

There were demons waiting for them at the door. Only two, though, and they were quickly wiped out of the way. However, when they got inside, there were many more. Sam, Dean, Castiel, and Meg tore their way through the horde of demons waiting for them inside, but not without injuries. During the fight, Meg was stabbed in the shoulder with a pipe that was stuck in the wall behind her. Castiel got rid of the demons around her and pulled the pipe out of the wall, and out of her shoulder. He asked if she needed to leave, but she told him no.

"We've got to save Candy," she smiled at him. "That's all that matters. I'll be fine." Castiel trusted her judgement, so he let her keep fighting, although he kept close to her in an effort to protect her. Sam and Dean fought with a ferocity that they had never had before. They fought not because it was their job, but because, for once, they had something to lose, something they couldn't go on without.

When they cleared the first room, they decided that it was time to split up and search different ends of the building. Castiel and Meg went together, and Sam and Dean went the other direction.

As Sam and Dean creeped down the hallway, it was eerily silent. All they could hear was the sound of the air conditioner and the ambient noise around them. They came upon the first door and exchanged glances. Sam gripped Ruby's knife tightly, then pushed into the room.

They weren't sure if it was deliberate or if it was just luck, but there Candy was, in the very first room. She was hanging from a pipe by her wrists, wearing nothing but her bra, which was torn apart, and her panties. Her clothes were laying in a ripped up pile on the floor at her feet, and there were cuts scattered all over her body, from the tops of her breasts, to her stomach, to her inner thighs. The cuts were deep, and they dripped in a way that made her seem like she was covered in red lace.

Her head hung low, and it stayed down even when they approached her. Sam hurried to her, followed by Dean, and he lifted her face to find that she was unconscious. Nervously, he pressed his fingers against her throat.

"She's still breathing."

"Let's get her down," Dean said, his voice shaky. Sam reaches up and cut the rope, while Dean braced himself to catch her as she toppled over. Gently, they laid her on the ground. "Candy," Dean said her name as he shook her. "Candy, wake up."

"She's lost a lot of blood," Sam noted. "We need to get her out of here."

"We need to find Crowley," Dean argued. "She won't be safe until that bastard is dead. I don't know what his infatuation is with her, but he won't leave her alone until we're dead or he is. We can't leave."

"She needs a hospital, Dean," Sam said angrily. "We have to get her out of here." Candy stirred a little, groaning quietly. Dean smiled down at her,

"Let's let her decide."

"Candy," Sam said her name tenderly. "Candy." Her eyes opened, and she looked up at Sam.

"Sammy?"

"Hey, Candy," he brushed her hair out of her face. She turned her head to see Dean.

"You guys came. I told you not to come."

"We had to. We couldn't leave you behind, Candy," Dean told her. "We love you." She sat up slowly, covering her chest with her arms. Dean took off his jacket and gave it to her. After slipping her arms through, Candy zipped it up to cover herself. "Do you want to leave?"

"No," she said sternly. "I want Luca dead."

"Who's Luca?"

"An incubus," she sighed. "It's a long story. I'll tell you later." She pushed herself up to her feet, leaning on Dean's shoulder when she was suddenly overcome by dizziness. After steadying herself, Candy grabbed Dean's spare gun from the back of his jeans. She popped the magazine out, checked the bullets, then popped it back in. "Come on." Sam and Dean looked at each other, then followed her out of the room and down the hallway.

Candy let her instincts lead her. Somehow, she could feel where Luca was hiding. Any demon that stood in the way between her and Luca was taken out quickly by Sam and Dean. She occasionally had to stop to lean against the wall and take a deep breath, but she was determined to push on. Luca had violated her and tortured her, and she wasn't going to let him get away from her.

Sure enough, her instincts were right. She kicked through the door, gun aimed as soon as she entered the room. Candy quickly located Luca and fired off a few rounds. One of them connected with his shoulders and the other tore through his stomach. The other demons rushed forwards, but Sam and Dean were there to defend her. She made her way through the crowd until she could see Luca. He was doubled over on the ground clutching his stomach with his injured arm. He laughed,

"If you waste your time killing me, Crowley is going to get away."

"I don't care," she said coldly, kicking him over onto his side.

"A regular gun can't kill me," Luca rolled his eyes. Candy smirked down at him, then turned back.

"Sam. Throw me Ruby's knife." Sam hesitated, but eventually tossed it to the ground at her feet. She bent down slowly and picked it up. "This kind of looks like the one you used on me, doesn't it?" She glared down at him. "A gun may not be able to kill you, but I'm pretty sure you won't be getting up after I separate your head from your shoulders." She straddled him and used her knees to hold down his arms. Luca struggled underneath her, but any movement cause a sharp pain to shoot through his stomach. "Such a shame to ruin such a pretty face."

"Please don't do this, Candy. I can help you find Crowley."

"He's here, we'll find him."

"He's not. He took off already. He knew you were coming, so he left. I know where he went. If you let me live, I can help you find him." Luca squirmed. "Please. We're two of the same kind, Candy. We can help each other. I can make you stronger, more powerful." Candy hesitated for a minute. His eyes turned brown instead of black, and he suddenly looked very human. "Don't kill me, Candy. I have a daughter."

"How?"

"I'm not the same as a demon. I'm not like them."

"You're lying."

"I'm not. Her name is Sarah and she's two years old. She needs me. Her mother is in an institution. I'm supporting her."

"You're lying!" She yelled down at him. The sincerity in his eyes made her body go rigid. "You son of a bitch. What are you doing here, then? Why are you working for Crowley when you have a daughter to look after?"

"Crowley is paying for her treatments. She has leukemia."

"Bullshit."

"I swear, Candy. I swear. He hired me because you can't affect me. He found me specifically and he offered to pay for her treatments if I helped him capture you and lure the Winchesters here. I promise, Candy. I promise."

"Bastard," she cursed, getting up off of him. "You better help me find Crowley. If you ever do anything to me or my friends again, or if you double cross us, I'll kill you. You better believe I won't show mercy next time." She stepped back. "Get out of here." Luca hurried up from the floor, despite the pain in his shoulders and stomach, and ran out of the room. Dean started to run after him. "Don't!" Candy shouted at him. "Let him go."

"Why? Isn't he the bastard that did that to you?"

"Yeah, but he has a kid. Crowley used her against him, forced him to help get you two here. Crowley isn't even here anymore." She dropped her arms to her side in frustration. "Let's get out of here. There's nothing here for us."

They got together with Castiel and Meg and left the warehouse. Castiel healed Candy as soon as he could, so that the cuts were gone, although the blood still covered her. She couldn't wait to get to a motel and wash up. The ride back was nice after having been away from Sam and Dean for so long. They let Castiel drive, and they sat in the back with her in the middle. She laid her head on Dean's shoulder, but held Sam's hand. It was just the way she liked it. Being with them, being between them, feeling safe and warm.

When they got to the motel room, Castiel and Meg went into their own room, while Sam and Dean got the key for theirs. Candy put on a pair of jeans in the car, then got out and started to gather her things. As she was sitting on the hood of the car, waiting for Sam and Dean to return with the key, a man walked up to her.

"Excuse me," he said politely, "are you Candace?"

"Yeah. How do you know me?"

"Your boyfriends," the man grinned evilly. His eyes turned black, then he reached out and grabbed Candy's throat. Dean and Sam showed up immediately, and the demon threw Candy to the ground. It raised its hand and knocked Sam backwards. Dean rushed towards it with Ruby's knife, but before he reached it, another appeared behind him, raising a gun at Dean.

"DEAN!" Candy screamed at the top of her lungs. Dean turned just in time to see the gun fire. He collapsed, and a pool of blood quickly began pooling underneath him. The demons started towards Sam, but Castiel appeared. Candy crawled to Dean while they fought. "Dean, please," she cried. She lifted his head into her lap. His eyes were wide,

"Candy." He coughed and blood splattered against her cheek.

"Stay with me," she begged him. "Please, Dean." He smiled half-heartedly and reached up to touch her cheek. She nuzzled against it, and he used his thumb to wipe away the tear falling down her cheek.

"I love you." Another cough, more blood.

"Dean, no, you can't die," she sobbed. "I'm pregnant, Dean. You could be a father. You have to stay with me, Dean." Dean

"I could be..." His voice faded away, as did the light in his eyes. Candy cried out, a long, pained wail, then laid her head on Dean's chest and sobbed. Castiel killed the second demon, then hit his knees beside Dean. He put his hand to Dean's forehead, but it was too late. Dean was gone. He put his face in his hands,

"I'm too late. I'm so sorry, Dean. I'm sorry, Candy." Sam struggled to his feet, then stumbled over to his brother.

"Is he... Don't tell me he's gone, Cas. Don't tell me there's nothing you can do."

"It's too late, Sam, I can't save him. I can't bring him back from the dead."

"Of course you can!" Sam grabbed Castiel by the collar and yanked him up to his feet. "You brought him back once. You can do it again."

"It's not easy. That was before Crowley took control of hell. I don't know if I can do it again. I'm sorry, Sam. I'm so sorry."

"Damn it, Cas, you have to try!" Sam cried. His grip loosened on Castiel's collar and his head fell onto his angel friend's shoulder. Castiel hugged Sam tightly as he cried. It was hard to see such a big, strong person break down like Sam did. To cry like Sam did. Meg rushed outside and knelt down beside Candy. She pulled Candy away from Dean and held Candy against her chest.

"Don't look at him, Candy. It's okay. I'm here."

"I'm pregnant," she sobbed, grabbing handfuls of Meg's jacket. "He can't be gone. He might be a dad. He'll never get to be a dad." Sam moved back from Castiel and looked down at Candy with wide, tear-filled eyes.

"What?" Candy looked up at him, too.

"You could be a father, too." Sam fell to his knees, so Meg moved out of the way to let Candy and Sam come together. He took Candy into his arms. They cried together there. Cried for Dean, cried for themselves, and cried for the baby inside of Candy who may have just lost the chance to ever know their father. A hole was carved into them, then. A hole that could never be filled. Nothing could ever replace Dean, not Sam for Candy, and not Candy for Sam. Suddenly, the world was so much darker, and the air was so much colder.
