Veracities
Christians POV:
I walk into my study and call Ted.
Ted: Hi dad. How are things at home?
Christian: tense. Ted how did you find out about Phoebe and Josh? You knew before all of us.
Ted's POV:
Dad has just asked the one question I didn't want to answer.
Phoebe's Graduation and Christian Grey Honorary degree graduation. (three months ago)
"Ted, you are going to be late." Lily says laughing loudly. I have spent the last ten minutes kissing every inch of her seven months, pregnant swollen belly that is carrying our third child, before making my way up to her chest, neck, and finally her mouth.
"I wish you were coming. I am going to worry constantly about you back here at home." I say sadly, but we can't change this. Lily's pregnancy has taken its toll, and she is getting tired easily, causing her to go on early maternity leave. A trip over East isn't in the best interests of my wife or unborn child.
"Don't be. You are only going away for two nights, plus you are taking the twins. Also, both my mothers are going to be here with me. I should be more worried about you with Josh, and whatever antics you two are going to get up to" Lily comments and raises her eyebrows.
"Why Mrs Grey, whatever do you mean? Antics? I am an extremely happily married thirty-nine year old man who is also, a highly respected and successful businessman and future CEO of the biggest private companies in the world, with two teenage children and one on the way. Joshua, too is tremendously successful and well regarded lawyer, who just lectured at Harvard." I advise her.
"Thank you for the summary of yours and Josh's resume. All that said, you have been best friends forever, I do know how crazy you two can get together. I don't mind. You spend so much time working and looking after us all. I wouldn't mind if you let your hair down a little, but I would rather also that you didn't look at any other women." Lily comments.
"I only have eyes for you. I always have ever since I saw you, hiding from your mother at Grey house listening to your iPod" I recommence to kiss Lily perfect lips. I won't be able to kiss her for over forty-eight hours, so I need to bank them.
"Actually, I am looking forward to catching up with my best friend, over a few beers. Josh has undoubtedly helped keep Phoebe grounded while she finished college. My family is grateful to him. My sister, though truly independent, is particularly family oriented. She thrives being around the family, and Josh has given her that feeling."
"I am surprised she hasn't hooked up with some guy. Phoebe is gorgeous. Actually she is pretty hot according to one of my younger cousins, on the phone last week" Lily comments.
"Which cousin?" I like my father feel extremely protective of my sister, and though we aren't opposed to her dating, we are concerned about whom she dates.
"Craig, and the rest. I am sure Phoebe will have a few thousand admirers when she finally returns to Seattle form her trip to Australia and Asia" Lily evaluates.
"Probably." I grimace.
I am happy to see Eli and Ruby both come downstairs, ready to leave. We are travelling via the GEH jet, with my parents and grandparents. Grace and Carrick Grey have waited a hell of a long time to see their middle child finally receive his Harvard college degree.
"Dad we are ready" Ruby is obviously excited to see Phoebe. Whilst I spent a lot of time talking to my sister, as a teenager, when she considered our parents were being unreasonable, Phoebe will take on the same role for Ruby. My teenage daughter idolizes her aunt, and it's understandable. Phoebe is only six years older than my children as, so she has a better perspective, I guess.
I watch as the twins say goodbye to their mother, and head out to the car where Bradley is waiting. I pull Lily into my arms and hold her for a few minutes.
"Now Mrs Grey, I will be home in a couple of day. You are to sleep, eat and do nothing but enjoy the peace and quiet." I order and kiss her again.
"But the baby and I were planning on training for the Seattle marathon this weekend" Lily jokes rubbing her stomach, whilst I shake my head and laugh. I bend down to kiss my wives beautiful baby bump, one more time, and then pay particular attention to Lilly's succulent lips.
"Love you so much" I whisper into her ear.
"Love you too, Teddy. Look after the kids, and say hi to Phoebe for me." Lily requests.
"Will do. Bye" I grab my bag, but I haven't gotten two feet away from Lily before I turn around, and hold her one more time and kiss her passionately.
"Bye," I say grinning.
"Just go, before I make you delay the flight," Lily says rolling her eyes.

We are all staying at a hotel near Harvard University, with the exception of Phoebe. She wants to be able to stay at her apartment, to ensure she hasn't forgotten to pack anything. My parents were considering selling it the apartment, but have decided to hold on to it and rent it out. With any luck Eli and Ruby, might be attended Harvard in four years themselves.
Phoebe and I have conspired to surprise our parents. They believe that we will catch up with her in a few hours for dinner downstairs. However, my little sister couldn't wait to see everyone and is making a surprise trip earlier. I am just a little disappointed for her that our grandparents are in their suite taking a nap, but considering their age it is more than understandable.
I sent Josh a text message, hoping he will won't be busy, tomorrow night, after graduation to go for a few drinks. I know he is scheduled to return to New York, within the next couple of days, to trial a case since his lecturing hiatus from practicing law is over. I have our CPO's, in our suite, and we have family here, so the twins will be well cared for, should I go out.
I tell Bradley that I will answer the door when there I hear a knock.
"Fifi" I almost scream, excited to see my little sister, but frown a little as her dress is a little short. This will not go down well with my father.
"Teddy!" She replies almost getting emotional. I hug her and even lift her off the ground. "Gosh I missed you big brother."
"Missed you two, little sis, isn't your dress a little short?" I query.
"Save it big brother. It is mid-thigh length, and you're not our father" She mocks.
"Fine I will save it for dad to scold you. Now get in here quickly before anyone see's you. Our parents and grandparents suites are next to mine." I warn.
"Wait, before you drag me in. I bought something, well someone." Phoebe states.
"Who?"
"Who else? Got any other best friends from when you were five years old?" Josh mocks. "I just checked my phone, and wanted to tell you personally, yes I am free tomorrow for a few beers."
"Sure you didn't come here personally, trying to get an invite to dinner tonight?" I joke.
"Well if you're paying, then set a chair for me" Josh laughs. We give each other a guy style hug. "Get inside you two"
The second Phoebe has entered the suite, Eli and Ruby greet her, and commence talking nonstop. I surmise that I will have to catch up with Phoebe later as my children will not give her up easily. I do notice, my teenage daughter rave over Phoebes dress.
"Don't even think about it Ruby" I say. Ruby rolls her eyes and continues to talk to Phoebe, whilst I refocus my attention on Josh.
"Teenagers! They are enough to make you realize they are your reason for living or be institutionalized." I say, and go over to the bar to make us a drink. I notice Josh looking over at the twins, rather longingly. I have never seen him look like that.
"Are you doing alright," I pass him his drink and bring him back to the near and now.
"Yeah... um... fine... why?" He asks, almost a little worried.
"You were looking at the twins, rather intently." I inform him.
"The twins?" Josh says shocked and then look's over to them. The twins are standing there talking to Phoebe. "Umm... yeah. It's just that they grew up so quick. My god son is rather handsome." He says recovering his focus.
"Way too quickly. I can't wait till the baby is born, I miss the baby stage where they need you constantly." My heart warms immediately just talking about my new unborn child.
"I understand. I would still like to have children" Josh murmurs ever so quietly.
"My father would like to talk to you. Do you mind if we go and have a chat to him right now?" I ask.
"He does?" I can't explain why, but Josh looks a little worried. I turn to face my children and Phoebe. "I need to take Josh out for several minutes. Phoebe I will send you a text, then go to the door on the left. That's our parent's suite."
"Sure," Phoebe says uncertain. We walk out of the room, and I knock on my parent's door. I should have called beforehand. Knowing how 'in love' my parents are, they might not be in a position to be social.
"Maybe I shouldn't go in. If your parents see me, they might workout Phoebe is here and ruin the surprise." Josh seems a little anxious. It is strange to see him like this. He has always been so composed, cocky even.
"No, they won't. It's not like you two have been together constantly. I will tell them that I texted you, and you came straight over. I know my father wants to thank you, for helping Phoebe." I inform him. Josh relaxes immediately.
"You are acting really strange buddy, has spending hours with college kids warped you, or something?" I joke.
"No, I am tired. I have been finishing up, here and prepping for a case in New York while trying to get some time out to go on a trip overseas."
"You need a boy's night, and it's a good thing I am here!" Taylor finally opens the door. He asked to come on this trip, even though he doesn't do them anymore. He watched Phoebe grow up and has worked with my father forever, and he wants to watch them both receive their degree.
"Taylor, are my parents available?" I ask
"Your father is. He is the den" I nod and lead Josh inside. My father is looking decidedly relaxed, and I note that he is in different clothes from what he was wearing a couple of hours ago. You would think that they would have slowed down by now. Dad nods when he sees me and Josh.
"Joshua, great to see you. Take a seat"
"Thank you Mr Grey"
"No need to be formal, you can refer to me as Christian. My wife and I owe you a debt of gratitude." My dad says honestly.
"We all do. Phoebe has told us how you have tremendously helped get her through this last part of her degree. She was so ready to quit college when she was home last. Your encouragement has kept her going" I add to the praise.
"Not to mention that her grades are better than ever!" My dad says.
"Phoebe's grades have always been good, and thank you for your praise, but there is no need. Phoebe has helped me more than I did for her, I suspect. She is an extraordinary person." Josh comments. He smiles but then becomes casual.
"Yes, we think so. My wife, Ana, and I would like than you somehow." My father states
"No, you both don't need to do that," Josh says quickly.
"But we do. Phoebe might not have seen the school year out, without you support. It means a lot to my parents to see their youngest grandchild and their second child receive degrees tomorrow." My father evaluates.
"Congratulations on the being awarded the Honorary degree. Personally I think the university should have done it years ago" Josh praises.
"Thank you.' My father gets up and pulls out an envelope from the drawer. "Josh, please accept this as a thank you from Ana and I" Josh is hesitant to take it the envelope but does due to my father insistence. He looks inside the envelope to see what I believe is a bank cheque. He certainly doesn't look like a guy who has just been given a large sum of money.
"Mr Grey… sorry Christian, I have earned a sizable income for quite some time, and whilst I appreciate your gratitude, I don't want money from you. It was a pleasure to help your family and spend time with Phoebe. You must all be very proud of her, she is remarkable, especially for her age," Josh states unusually impassioned and placing the cheque on the small coffee table. My father who doesn't like to be told 'no' from anyone, thins his lips and looks annoyed.
"Dad how about we just invite him to our family dinner tonight." I suggest.
"Done, we would be happy for you to come. Now there is just the matter of how I will get you to accept our gift" My father is nothing if not persistent.
"I won't take it, but why don't you donate it. Ted, are you still involved in the development projects in Darfur?" Josh inquire.
"Absolutely. It's one of my passions, you know that!" I state.
"Good, then Christian, please donate it." Knowing that this discussion is coming to an end, and my mother is walking around the suite, I send Phoebe a text and tell her to make her way here.
We hear a knock on the door and then hear Phoebe uncharacteristically squeal. "MOM" They are literally hugging each other to death. They are even crying a little. Phoebe looks over and sees our father as if she didn't need any more reason to be emotional. My father is looking overjoyed as he walks over to them both and wraps his arms around them, and kisses Phoebe's forehead.
"Your honor, this is exhibit one, in the case proving my family is a little emotional at times." I comment to Josh comically.
"Don't pull any of that, Teddy. I know you want to join us" Phoebe says. I look up and drop my shoulders, before walking over and joining my family.
"It will be good to have you home again" I whisper into my sister's ear.

My grandparents are beaming as they have photos taken with my dad in his graduation gown, before the ceremony.
"Oh Christian, you look so gallant," My grandmother says, wiping a few tears away.
"Okay Grace, you have cried enough." My grandfather tells her trying to calm her down.
"I need a photo of Christian with Phoebe now in their gowns" My mother's orders. We look around for my sister, and there she is a few guys, also in graduation gowns. I watch her, and notice she is brushing them off.
"Phoebe, I need a photo" my mother calls out, and Phoebe walks to re-join us.
"Who were they?" I ask
"Just some guys I know from college, they were asking me to a post grad party. I turned them down" Phoebe replies.
"You don't need to do that. We had a big family dinner last night and will be finished with dinner early tonight. You should enjoy yourself. A couple of those guys looked particularly interested in you." My mother adds, much to my father's disinclination.
"I am not interested in them," Phoebe affirms.
"It's another boy's" My grandmother says reading Phoebe. "Who is it? Who is this boy that has caught your fancy?"
"There isn't anyone," Phoebe answers awkwardly. I know this is one of those times, I need to come to her rescue.
"Eli and Ruby, could you take you great grandparents to their chairs and keep them company?" I tell them, more than ask.
"Sure dad" Eli and Ruby agree. They actually do enjoy spending time with them.
"Christian, Phoebe, Photo, now!" My mother states forcefully.
"Come one Mom, don't you have a thousand photos already?" Phoebe groans a little and with excellent reason. Our mother has taken more of photos than we have ever seen.
"Listen to your mom" our dad tells her. My mother then proceeds to take at least thirty photos.
"Excuse me, can I interrupt?" Josh says having come over.
"Yes, sure," Phoebe answers before anyone has a chance to reply.
"Mr Grey... "My father starts to motion to remind him that he has permitted him to use his first name. "…Sorry, Christian. I have been asked to inform you join the official party in the tent, left to the stage, in preparation for the ceremony. You will be on stage as the honey degree recipient." Josh advises.
"Phoebe, I will see you when you go on stage, and I will see you all after the ceremony." My father kisses my mother, a little too much, for public, but we are used to that these days.
"I am going to go and take my seat. I want to take photos of the stage and everything" My mother says hurrying off.
"I have never seen Mom like this. Have you?"
"Never" Phoebe, and I look at each other and laugh.
"Graduation fever." I shrug. I look over to make sure my mother isn't taking photos of the stands. When I turn around, I see Phoebe and Josh talking softly. She is looking at him as if he can see straight through him. It's most uncanny.
"I better go, I am part of the official party. Ted, we still on for this evening?" Josh asks.
"Yeah! I have permission from my wife to let my hair down" I reply. He nods and then looks at Phoebe. There is something strange about how he looks right now.
"Congratulations on your graduation, Phoebe." Josh leans in to kiss her cheek, and then tucks a loose strand of hair behind her ear. Wow that was a little too acquainted.
"Thanks." Phoebe murmurs. Josh walks off quickly leaving me with my sister.
"I should get into line for graduation. I will see you after the ceremony" Phoebe declares. I smile as she leaves. There was something curious about Phoebe and Josh just then, but I shake the thought off, knowing I am probably just tired.

"This year's Harvard honorary degree, is conferred to Christian Trevelyan-Grey" The Dean of Harvard University announces. My father shakes the dean's hand and takes to the podium, as the honorary degree recipient, it is his role to make a speech.
"I first should start by thanking Harvard University for bestowing on me this honorary degree. As it is well documented, I never completed my degree, rather I was anxious to test the waters in the world of mergers and acquisition; however, I am an extraordinarily proud father of two Harvard graduates. My son Theodore Grey, and my daughter, Phoebe Grey, who also will receive her degree today. My children are incredible people, and their attendance here at Harvard, has helped to shape them. The greatest thank you, has to go to my father Carrick Grey, my mother Dr Grace Trevelyan-Grey and my wife, Anastasia Grey. This degree is for you, Mom and dad. I understand why you didn't agree with me dropping out of college, a sentiment I held when one of my own children considered doing the same. Even though, I have been extremely successful in life, I am proud to have received this Harvard degree for you both. I cannot express in words how thankful I am to you both, for one adopting me, raising me, dealing with me in my teenage years, and then when it looks like I have my life in order and at the country's top college, I drop out and to take on the business world. You have been outstanding parents, and the only thing I would change is to have been your biological child. I love you both, dearly."
My father takes a quick breather. I am amazed by how open he is being especially in public. Even though a lot of what Dad has said, is public information, it feels intense and real hearing him articulate it so openly. My grandparents are holding hands as they are beam and become emotional due to my father's speech.
"Lastly, I must thank my gorgeous and extraordinary wife, who thrills, listens, challenges, and loves me every day. She has given me two fabulous children and taught me the true meaning of life. Graduates of Harvard, you worked tremendously hard to get into this University and then to complete your degree. I am sure you will all work as diligently in your careers; however, the best advice I would give you, is to know that there is more to life than that. You all must go out and find your more. Graduates of Harvard Business School, I congratulate you all!"
My father looked my mother head on as he told the graduates to find 'their more'. Mom has a few tears in her eyes, as does my grandmother. My father literally put his emotions on a plate.
We clap politely as each graduate is presented with their degree, though were significantly louder when Phoebe takes to the stage. The honor of conferring her degree has been given to our father. Both of them smile and even briefly hug on stage, much to the enjoyment of the audience. I know that this is one of their best moments, as father and daughter.

After the graduation, we all move towards, the marquee area. My grandfather has engaged Josh in a deep conversation about the current ethical standards for legal practitioners that congress is attempting to pass, and how practical it will be to enforce this mode of accountability, when the separation and division of powers is so distinct in America. Poor Josh, he keeps looking around, trying to find a way out. My father and sister having de-gowned, are swiftly moving over to us, which is lucky for my long term best friend, since my grandparents and mother are both egger to have a moment with my dad, due to his speech. Phoebe walks over to Josh, and I, diverting from the soon to be emotional scene.
"Congratulations Fifi, I knew you would do it," I hug my sister and lift her off the ground. "I am so proud of you"
"Thanks Teddy, ready to face me at Grey Enterprise?" She challenges, playfully.
"Bring it on. I could use another person to make me coffee and get me lunch" I joke.
"As if. Have you heard about my grade point average?" Phoebe says rather sassy.
"Yes, yes, yes… very nice. Josh, are you sure that you didn't talk to some of Phoebe's professors and have them up her marks?" I laugh.
"Definitely not." Josh says, failing to join me in my joke, like he usually does, rather he is looking at my sister, again. If I didn't know any better, I would think something is up, but I know that Josh has known my sister for a long time, though it had been over ten years since they saw each other before this year. "Phoebe is a bright woman in her own right."
"Thanks Josh, I wouldn't have been able to finish college without you" Phoebe is smiling shyly, and they exchange a look. Hhhhmmm…. Something is undeniably off.
"I am sorry, but I have to go. The faculty is hosting a small goodbye mixer and party for me. Ted what time should I meet you?" Josh inquires.
"I have to have dinner with my family and will meet you around eight?" I inform him.
"Excellent. Let's go to the bar across the road".
Phoebe and I look at our grandparents and parents who are a little emotional and still hugging my father. Ruby and Eli are standing next them, surprised by this huge show of emotion in such a public setting. Phoebe and I, cautiously join them. We are all passed a glass of Rose Bollinger and together we toast and drink. My father invites Taylor to join us also. I only wish Lily was here.
We are all talking casually, deciding what to do for dinner and about Phoebe's overseas trip that she will commence tomorrow. I know that my father has ensured that adequate security will attend with her, but I know he is going to be out of his comfort zone on this one. Dad is still frightfully controlling, and Phoebe is his little girl.
"If you all don't mind, Ana and I want to go back to the hotel. We will see you all for dinner at 6pm" My father says. I suspect I know why they are both so eager to get away as do my grandparents.
My grandparents, Phoebe and I decide that this is an opportune time to talk to the twins about attending Harvard for college. We are all enjoying each others company, when Phoebe is interrupted.
"Excuse me, I apologize for interrupting." Another male graduate says. "Phoebe could I see you for a second?" he requests. My sister nods and takes a few steps away from us all. We can't hear them but can make out their body language and facial expressions.
"Oh wow! He is so cute" My teenage daughter is practically swooning. I look at her disapproving and shake my head at her.
"I am going to be thirty before I am allowed to date," Ruby says annoyed looking at me.
"Don't be silly, honey. I am not going to let you date until you are at east forty, maybe fifty" I joke, but my daughter obviously doesn't share my humor. My family continue to converse, whilst I watch Phoebe. She is shaking her head, while her male companion seems to be trying to convince her of something. I walk towards them to make sure Phoebe is alright. Consequently, I hear part of their conversation
"Come one Phoebe, this the last chance we have to be together. I could pick you up after you have dinner with your family, and then we could go to the post-grad party together." He requests, obviously asking her on a date.
"No, thank you, but I do appreciate the offer" Phoebe politely declines. The other graduate finally relents and walks off.
"You weren't interested in him?" I ask.
"No," Phoebe answers simply.
"You have rejected so many guys today, and dinner will be offer by eight. There is a lot of time for you to go out and your flight doesn't leave till tomorrow afternoon." I remind her.
"I am not interested those guys." Phoebe asserts. I eye her off curiously, and feel the need to ask one more question.
"Okay, but you have rejected a lot of guy's today." The thought then hits me. "Phoebe, are you gay?" I ask casually.
"Uh, no" Phoebe is feisty and looking at me as if she doesn't even know me.
"Just so you know it is fine if you are. Everyone will still love you, no matter what" I explain.
"I know, but I am not gay. I am just particular with whom I will see. There is a particular one person….umm… I mean a type that I am interested in" She declares and walks back to our family. Phoebe has just slipped up. My little sister is interested or involved with someone but isn't telling anyone.

"Do you remember that time the gang tried to get into that strip joint and got caught?" Josh mentions. Be bothy laugh loudly at the event in retrospect. We have sat spent the last two hours drinking beer, laughing and reminiscing of old times, growing up in New York.
"They were such extraordinary times, but it's hard to believe that they were so long ago, though. You should come out to Seattle more, or I should go to New York more and catch up with the guys. We don't do this enough" I state. We both take another long drink, and I notice there is a woman sitting at the bar, trying to get Josh's attention.
"Okay Buddy. 10am, blonde and blue eyed, hot woman, eying you off" I inform him. Josh looks over from our table and twists his lips.
"Nah," he says.
"Whoa, that's a first. Joshua Harris, Mr- gods-gift-to-women, not going after a hot woman who has shown that she is interested in you." Josh shrugs it off and orders us another round of beers.
After another three rounds of beer, we decide to leave, and head to the bar to pay our tab. We have been arguing for a solid five minutes over who will pay the bill, when a rather slim and curvy woman comes up to Josh, and wraps her arms around him.
"Hey Josh, I have missed you. You haven't answered any of my calls." She says shaking her finger at him.
"Dianne, I told you I wasn't interested anymore," Josh says pushing her off him.
"You seemed particularly interested a couple of months ago, when we were seeing each other, and then suddenly..." Josh interrupts her.
"Look it was enjoyable at the time, but I told you it was over. I don't know how many times I need to tell you." Josh says insistently.
"It because of that young bi…" Josh suddenly becomes annoyed and holds his hand out forcefully.
"GO AWAY AND FIND SOMEONE ELSE TO ANNOY. WE ARE OVER!" Josh is uncharacteristically annoyed and angry, but she finally leaves. .
"Fuck, she was pissed. What did you do to her? And what young, whatever was she talking about" I probe.
"Nothing, she is just a woman I was seeing, but it wasn't working out, so I ended it. That's all. Let's just get out of here" I agree, but wonder if there is more than he is telling me.

"These photos are terrific" My mother says. We are on the GEH jet on our way back to Seattle. Phoebe currently is at the Boston International airport, terminal waiting for her flight to Australia. I am looking forward to having her home again, but know it will be three months before we see her again.
"Ana, how many photos did you take, and some of these are blurry" My father proclaims.
"I just wanted to get as many photo's I could so I would have a range. I want to frame some, and I am deleting the blurry ones as I go." My mother defends herself. My father presses something on the computer and a look of shock comes over his face.
"Anastasia, you took over three thousand photos this weekend, and you are only up to one hundred and two." My father reproaches
"Then good thing we have a long flight home, I will be done before we land." My father whispers something into my mother's ear, and she blushes. Oh man, seriously. They both get up.
"Mom, can I look at some of the photos? I want to copy some and transfer them to my thumb drive to show Lily. This way she won't feel like she has missed out when the twin talk about it to her?" I request.
"Of course" My mother passes me the laptop, before her and my father walk to the back on the plane, into the private section. Thank gosh my grandparents aren't tired and are happily playing monopoly with the twins.
I have copied abut twenty, when I get to the some natural photos. That is when I see it. Phoebe and Josh looking at each other, Josh touching Phoebe arm and tucking loose hair strands behind her ear. They are looking at each other, exactly how I look at Lily, how my parents look at each other and even my grandparents. FUCK! No! It can't be! But it all fits.
I contemplate getting on the on-board phone to contact either Josh or Phoebe, maybe even both of them. However, I suspect they would deny everything. Maybe I am reading too much into it. They have become close friends because of me, surely that is it. If they were in a relationship, then they would tell me at least. Josh has been my best friend since we were five years old, and Phoebe is my little sister. She and I have spoken about everything, and knows I will listen. I look through more photos, but find more pictures that feature them both, which makes me wonder. I copy these photos and delete them off my mother's laptop.
(Back to present time)
Christian: Is that when you knew about Phoebe and Josh?
Ted: No I only suspected something was up. Josh went back to New York to his law practice, and Phoebe was overseas. I thought that maybe I was reading into everything too much. However, near the end of Phoebe's trip, Josh slipped up on the phone and said he was off to Asia. I decided then to have someone check out where he was going, and the day Phoebe returned, I received photo evidence of their relationship.
Christian: You hired a private investigator?
My father is repulsed.
Ted: yes, there was little other choice.
Christian: Next time talk to me. I am a choice!
Ted: Understood and I will. Dad I just hope there is a next time.
I honestly do hope there is a next time. I hope this relationship ends soon.
Christian: Okay. Well Phoebe starts work tomorrow. I am going to do what I can to limit the amount of time she has with Josh. Maybe with him going back to New York for a while, she will come to her senses. I will see you at Grey house tomorrow.
Phoebe POV:
Gail has placed a plate of chocolate chip pancakes with blueberries and cream on the side. This was my favorite breakfasts growing up, and one that my father, rarely let me have. The word chocolate and cream had little to do with breakfast in his opinion.
"You probably don't remember, but you had this exact breakfast that first day of preschool, then you first day of kindergarten, elementary school, middle school and high school. I would have made it for your first day of college, but distance got in the way there, so on your first day working full-time for Grey Enterprise, here is you old time favorite breakfast" Gail declares.
""Thanks Gail. I love it. It is very kind of you". I start to eat as Taylor walks in. I watch them kiss each other good morning, lovingly and discreetly since I am in the room.
"So Phoebe, are you ready for Grey House?" Taylor queries.
"No," I say shaking my head slowly.
"Don't be silly you will be fine," Gail tells me.
"I agree with Gail. You have practically been bred and groomed for this job since you were extremely young" Taylor affirms.
"Thank for joint vote of confidence. I just wish I wasn't starting work, with this conflict at the moment my parents, and even my brother. Three of the people I love most in the world, and they don't support my relationship. You know what, it isn't as if Josh is a chain smoking, tattooed, drinking, and motorcycle club thug. We're talking about, one of the most respected lawyers on the east coast of America." I say frustrated.
"Okay there Missy, chill out" For the first time Taylor is reprimanding me, and I am a little taken back. "Your parents have supported and loved you every second of your life, and you have been lucky to have them…"
"Taylor, I know... but…" I interject.
"Let me finish. You sprung this on them, and you haven't given them any time to get use to the idea of you and Josh together. If Sophie came to me and told me that she was dating a guy eighteen years her senior, then I wouldn't react positively at first either. Give your parents the benefit of the doubt." Taylor summarizes for me.
"I will try." I assure them both and decide to change the topic. "Even though I am nervous, I am looking forward to starting work today. I have been doing some research on a company that is going to go for sale, and whilst it is smaller than a lot of the companies Grey Enterprise usually acquires it is rather profitable, when broken down and sold to the right bidder." I tell them.
"So it's about knowing your market, right?" Taylor questions amused.
"Yes, exactly! When I was in India, I investigated a few of the companies who are keen to diversify into the American manufacturing industry. The country is the new China, and there is so much potential there." I say impassioned and notice that Gail is grinning widely at me while Taylor is trying to stifle his laughter. "What is so funny?"
"Nothing…. Well it is just that just then, you sounded exactly like your father, especially when he was younger." Taylor says winking at me.
"Now that's a concern" I hear my father say. I turn my head from the breakfast bar, and there are both my parents, dressed and looking like they can take on the world together.
"I agree. I don't know if the security detail or the world could manage two 'Christian Grey' types." Taylor jokes, making my mother and Gail both laugh.
"Humorous Taylor" My father scowls.
"Breakfast, Mr Grey and Ana?" Gail inquiries.
"Yes the usual for us both." This means Granola with Greek Yogurt and English breakfast tea for my mother, and an omelette and coffee for my father.
"Good morning, Phoebe" My father says.
"Morning, Dad and Mom" Taking Taylor's wise advice I stand up and kiss them both good morning. I don't want the tension around us, and I do love them both immensely, though they will still have to come to terms with my relationship.
"Well you are in a better mood this morning, especially in comparison to yesterday" My father states emotionless.
"Christian, don't, it will not help the situation" I barely hear my mother murmur, and decide to act as if I didn't hear them.
"Phoebe, I will be leaving in thirty minutes, will you be ready then also?" My father queries.
"I will be ready in ten minutes, actually, and I thought that I would drive myself in. This way it doesn't look like I am only working there because my father is the CEO. You understand don't you dad?" I state rather convincing if I do say so myself. Truth be told I don't want to be in close proximity to him alone. I am happy to avoid the inevitable father–daughter conversation about Josh and possibly sex that I know will be coming.
"I don't see the issue with you sitting in the same car as me to work. Grey House has a high staff retention rate, and some will even remember you as a young child, coming to work with me. Plus it is no secret that you are my daughter and is going to work at Grey House. Also, it doesn't make sense for us to take two separate cars, and you haven't been allocated a car park yet." My father articulates in a very matter of fact manner. I wonder if he pre-empted me wanting to drive myself, and started to make a list of reasons why I should travel with him.
"Yes, but I have plans after work today, and will need my car to get to my destination". I inform not only my father, but also my mother.
"Where are you going this evening?" My mother investigates.
"I am not entirely sure, I need to speak to Josh about that one" I comment. The temporary relaxed mood has suddenly expired.
"Phoebe, would you like me to make you some lunch?" Gail asks to trying to change the topic, for all our sakes.
"Thank you Gail, but my daughter won't need lunch today." I raise my eyebrow at my father's response.
"I won't?" I ask perturbed.
"No, I took your brother out for lunch on his first day at Grey House. I intend to do the same for you. Ted had a lot of questions about the company, and I think it is safe to assume you will too." He knows this isn't true. I have been going to Grey House since I was born and even read the staff handbook when I was ten. This was an advantage that Ted didn't get.
"Thank dad, but I will have to take a rain check. I already have plans for lunch today" I enlighten him.
"Oh, and when do you think, we can utilize that rain check?" I take a deep breath as I take a step back as if the inevitable tension is visible and plan to stand far away from it.
"Wednesday or any other day after, would be suitable" My father lips form a hard line, and my mother just looks disappointed. I chose not to linger and go upstairs to collect my car keys and bag.
My office is on the twelve floor of Grey House. Nestled next to my fathers and brothers office, and close to Ros's. I would prefer to have my office located at a lower level as I am junior staff, and allocated to Ros's team. However, I am to attend all senior staff meetings as preparation for my future position in the company.
I have been studying, training, and preparing myself to work here, for years after I decided that I didn't want to go into Publishing. When I about four or five, I believe I told my father that I wanted to work with my mother, out of fairness since my brother worked with our dad, but I soon discovered that it wasn't my interest. I love to read, but publishing isn't my interest.
I open my new Grey Enterprise email, and I am not surprised to find that I have numerous emails already. I have been added to multiple email groups, and Ros has sent me a dozen emails already today, and it is only 8:30am. I hear a strong knock at the door, and there is the prolific emailer herself. Instinctively I stand.
"Morning Ros, I have just started to go through my emails and am about to start reading yours first" Man, I feel nervous. I have known Ros all my life; as my father's college, as Lily's mother, Ted's mother-in-law and someone who would sneak me sweets when we had joint Christmas celebrations, but for the first time I feel a little intimated.
"Nice touch! As your line manager, I would expect you to read my emails first. Have you checked out your schedule?"
"Not yet" I admit. Shit! My first mistake! It is the first thing my father use to do at the start and end of the week, so he knew what was happening and could plan accordingly.
"Do it now. You will find you have a meeting this morning, with your father, brother and I at 9am" Ros advises.
"Oh really." My heart stops beating.
"Your father, Ted and I, as the three most senior people at Grey Enterprise, meet the first Monday each month, to discuss merger and acquisitions, technological developments and anything else happening at the company. As a future main player of the company, you are to attend these meetings. Feel free to contribute. The thing to keep in mind is Christian Grey is the CEO, and this is his company, so nothing happens without his approval. You may be his little princess, but you will find that the relationship ends when business is involved."
"Understood, and as my line manager, I need to be open and honest with you, right?"
"Absolutely," she says as if appalled that I need to ask.
"Then you should know that there is some personal conflict happening right now and …" Ros hands her hand out authorities, and I stop immediate. Shit! She can be scary.
"I know. Lily rang and told me everything. Your father and Ted are extremely professional. Just as you won't be given special treatment for being a family member you won't be penalized for family problems." I nod. "Now check your schedule, emails and don't be late to the meeting. You have twenty minutes" Ros says with a little humor in her voice.
"Thanks boss" I reply offering Ros a smile.
Before Ros exits my office, she turns around and faces me. Her strong demeanor is broken. "Phoebe, as a person who has and is in a relationship which wasn't part of the norm and was once highly frowned upon, I understand how hard it is. Just do whatever you think is best for you. Things have a way of working themselves out."
"Thank you" Ros's statement about her experience and advice warms me and gives me a large boost of confidence.
My schedule pops up on my screen, I can't believe it how full it is.
9am-11am: Mr Christian Grey's Office: Month review
11am-1pm: Human Resources Department: Induction briefing and paperwork
1:15pm-200: Public Relations department: Handling media queries
2:00- 6:00: Ros Bailey;s Office: Current acquisition allocation; Logan Industries.
Even if I was available and game enough, to have lunch with my father today, I wouldn't be able to make it. It also means that I won't be able to meet Josh for lunch at the deli across the bar, and I will be getting out of work later than I thought. I look at tomorrow's schedule, and it is similar to today's. On a whim, I check Wednesdays and not surprising there is are no appointments scheduled for 12pm – 2pm. In fact, my schedule for the rest of the week is more flexible. I email Josh, and let him know that lunch is off and that we need to change our plans. Josh texts me straight back
*work is work. I am at the law office here, checking it out and arranging my soon to be new space. I will meet you at 6:00 outside Grey House, and wait for you to come out. We can go to a restaurant within walking distance. Love you*
I am about to send him a reply when I hear Ted and Ros talk as they past my office. Damn, it's a few minutes to nine, and I need to get to my father's office. I race to the office, but compose myself as I enter the office. They are casually talking, around the couch with files scattered. I am pleasantly surprised when the mood is rather light, regardless of the seriousness of the day to day running of the company.
"Phoebe, I was wondering if you managed to make it to Grey house even though I still think it was redundant to drive yourself" My father states, still annoyed over this morning.
"I will add it to the list of things you haven't known immediately" My father groans quietly. I take a seat and look at Ted. For a moment, we both look at each other.
"Good Morning Ted" I am hoping to pass the olive branch even if it is for the space of the meeting.
"Morning Phoebe. I ordered a latte for you" He says.
"Thanks" I reply.
The meeting goes on and on, but I it gives me a much better outlook on current projects the company is working on. What gets my attention is when my father discusses the next stage of production of solar powered telecommunication technology, and how they have capital development issues. I make a mental note, to prepare a report on this and my thoughts in regards to the company we ought to purchase. It might be worth holding on to part of the company. As Ros advised me, both the male members of my family are professional in the meeting, however at times there was a definite unease in the room.

After 6pm on my second day at Grey house, and exhausted, I drag myself to my father office for a scheduled debriefing. I am late due to the back to back meetings I have had, and I don't even know how long this meeting is going to last for. Please don't let it last too long. I want to be in Josh's arm, eat and spend time with him before he leaves for New York. With Andrea having gone home already, I walk straight into my father's office. I find my father as expected, but my mother is also here. They are looking rather, 'close'. I cough a couple of times and my parents then allow some space between each other.
"Phoebe, good you're made it, though you are late." My father states looking at his watch.
"Did you have a good day? You look exhausted." My mother asks concerned.
"Yes, it was a long day. I am tired and very hungry. Dad how long is this debrief going to take?" I ask.
"Hungry? You didn't eat lunch again?" Oh shit, why did I open my mouth?
"I had a busy day. Actually, my schedule doesn't allow for me to have a lunch break until tomorrow, when Josh is no longer here in Seattle. Ironic hey"
"Lunch was placed in your office." He says. My mother gives him a scolding look, but it does little to affect him.
"I haven't been to my office since 9am. " I inform them.
"You need to eat, go and grab your bag. We can debrief at dinner. Ana do you mind if our daughter joins us?" My father asks.
"Of course not. Phoebe be quick, we have reservations for 6:30. I will call the restaurant and tell them we will now have another person for dinner." My mother advises.
"No, don't!" I call out. Both my parents are looking at me annoyed. "Josh is outside, waiting for me."
"Then go and get your bag. Ana ring the restaurant and tell them that an extra two people will be at dinner with us." My father says taking control, as usual.
"But this is his last night in Seattle until he can get things organized to take over his firm's office here." I state despondent.
"Phoebe if you want us to accept this relationship…" My mother states then is interrupted by my father. "Which is unlikely!" he adds.
"Christian, please. If you want us to accept this relationship, then you both need to sit and discuss this with us." My mother explains.
"I understand, but can this wait till him returns to Seattle. Josh leaves tomorrow morning" I start to plead.
"Are you intending on rectifying your virgin status?" My father's comment is a reflection of lack of eagerness, to join them tonight.
"How do you know I still am a virgin?" I hiss. My mother has the most horrified look on her face, but my dad looks furious. He looks like he could kill Josh with his bare hands. Shit that was a mistake. "Of course I am still a virgin."
Pulling my cell phone out of my skirt pocket, I ring Josh. "Hey, we have seem to have little choice but to have dinner with my parents…. Okay…. yes, I will meet you downstairs."
"We are in" I give in.
"Good," My father says.

We arrive in the private dining room, and I am stopped in my tracks when I find that three are six chairs at the table.
"There are too many chairs here" I calculate.
"Not there isn't. I had your mother ring to add another two chairs, to accommodate you and Josh." My father informs me.
"Then who else is coming to dinner?" I ask.
"I hope we are not late" I turn around, and there is Ted and Lily. Great!
"Not at all. We just got here ourselves." My father says inviting them to sit down.
"How is the baby and the twins?" My mother asks.
"The twins are home doing homework, hopefully before playing on their iPads and talking on the phone. Macie is fed and fast asleep. She won't be up until midnight, as long as she keeps to her current schedule. Either way I have left a bottle for her with our babysitter." Lily informs us all before she comes over and hugs me.
"I will keep Ted in check" she whispers into my ear.
"Please!" I whisper back.
We all take our seats and order. I take a long drink of my wine to calm my nerves, and feel Josh take my hand.
"Phoebe, I have some good news for you." Ted tells me smiling,
"Oh what is that?" I say guardedly.
"Ava will be back in a week. I spoke to her earlier today. She is looking forward to seeing you and catching up" Ted says.
"Excellent, I haven't seen her for months. Is Marcus coming home also?"
"Yes, he is on break from work."
"You remember Ava, don't you Josh?" Ted inquires, making Josh's body language shift unfavorably.
"Yes, I do" Josh confirms.
"Oh yeah, Ava and you were matched together in Ted and Lily's wedding." I recall
"Yes that is right. That's was the day that Ava together with this guy from school; however, that lasted like five minutes. They weren't even standing next to each other by the end of the wedding" Ted states.
"Elliot was ready to lock Ava up that night" My father laughs, but then narrows his eyes. I know he is protective of Ava also.
"Uncle Elliot should have she ended up hooking with someone else that night." Ted says. Everyone looks shocked at this news except Lily.
"Really? Who?" I ask.
"Your current boyfriend, Joshua Harris. In fact, that wasn't the only time you and Ava got together was it?" Ted proclaims.
"No, it wasn't" Josh confirms. What? Why didn't I know about this? And what happened?
Authors Note: I hope you had a wonderful Christmas. I though a nice long chapter would be a nice gift from me to you all.
Also, I want to point out that everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Please accept that, no matter what. I know some people like my current story line and others don't, and that is fine. I want to write FF that no one has done before.
