A/N: Just a little drabble because I'm craving domestic!Olitz.
Fitz hummed as he ascended the stairs, munching on a newly ripe apple. His long strides quickly carried him to the open door of Teddy's bedroom where he could see part of Olivia's back as she leaned against the doorframe. Sixteen-month old Nayirrah sat contently on her mother's ample hip, massaging her gums on a frozen carrot as she kicked her duck-socked feet.
"Lunch and backpack are loaded and ready to go. We're just missing the Teddy Bear," he announced.
Olivia turned to him with a smile. "Well we're unfortunately short one kindergartener."
She jerked her head in the direction of Teddy's bed, neatly made with Yo Gabba Gabba bedsheets, and Fitz smiled at the sight of Teddy's new red Converse, his first independent clothing choice, peeking from beneath it. He quirked his eyebrows at his wife. "How did we lose a whole boy?"
"I don't know, but since he's gone, I'm gonna eat his snacks."
"Can I have the Scooby Doo gummies?"
"Definitely, as long as I can eat the Goldfish."
"No!" came a shriek from under the bed. A moment later, Teddy crawled from under the bed, his blue Captain America t-shirt askew. "Those are my snacks!"
"So you are here," Fitz said with mock surprise. "Well let's get a move on, bud. Can't be late for the first day."
Teddy frowned. "I don't wanna go to school, Daddy. Can't I stay home with Mama Liv and Nayirrah?"
"Not today, bud. Remember how we talked about starting big kid school? Aren't you excited?" Fitz took a squirming Nayirrah from her mother and kissed the crown of her head.
Teddy shook his head and Olivia knelt, extending her arms to him. Teddy walked over slowly, laying his head on Olivia's shoulder and allowing her to pick him up. "Why not, baby bear?"
He lifted his head to peer at his stepmother with wide uncertain eyes. "What if nobody wants to be my friend?"
"Everybody's gonna wanna be your friend," Olivia assured before planting a kiss on his forehead. "Remember how much fun you had at open house last week?"
Teddy's eyes watered as he nodded. "But I'm only 4 and everybody else is 5, and they all had missing teeth but I've still got baby teeth, and I never been to school before."
"You're going early because you're smart, and you're gonna lose your teeth soon, and none of them have been to school before. Day care isn't school, bud." Fitz rubbed his son's curly head, exchanging a worried look with his wife.
Teddy didn't look convinced, instead worming out of Olivia's arms and hitting the floor with a soft thud. "I have to go to the bathroom."
He walked to his bathroom and shut the door behind him. Fitz frowned. "Maybe he should wait a year."
"He'll be 5 in two months, Fitz. Next year he'll feel too old. He's just got first day jitters."
"I didn't know kindergarteners could be neurotic," Fitz replied. "Still, if he feels this bad, maybe he could wait and start next week after we hype it up a little."
"Everyone will be comfortable going to school, and they'll have made friends. He'll still be behind." Olivia gave a fleeting smile as Nayirrah offered her the carrot then promptly reconsidered and replaced it in her mouth. "I think once he gets there, he'll be fine."
"How do we convince him, though?"
Olivia thought for a moment. "Do you still have that old burner phone?"
"Of course." Fitz smiled. "It's special."
Olivia smirked, playfully rolling her eyes. "It so isn't. Go get it."
Fitz handed Nayirrah over and left the room. Nayirrah looked at her mother with a sparsely toothed grin. "Down, peas."
Olivia set the baby on her feet, watching as she toddled to Teddy's prized collection of models he'd painstakingly built himself. She went to her favorite one, a Ferris wheel, and gently set it spinning, grinning in delight at her mother. Olivia smiled at her baby girl, short and pigeon-toed like her, but curly-haired and easy-going like Fitz. She plopped onto her diapered bottom and set the wheel spinning again. clapping as it whirled. She wondered if the baby would ever develop Fitz's pensive side as Teddyy had.
Fitz returned with the phone but stopped beside Olivia, wrapping his arm around her waist as he smiled at Nayirrah. "Just think, in a few years we get to do this all over again with her."
Olivia gave him a sad smile. "Don't say that. I'm already losing one baby to big kid school."
Teddy emerged from the bathroom, looking noticeably less stressed. "I pooped."
Fitz chuckled. "Feel better?"
Teddy gave a slight nod. "Only a little."
Olivia took the phone from Fitz, giving him a questioning look. He nodded and she knew he'd deleted everything from it. She squatted to be eye level with Teddy. "Okay, baby bear, here's what we're gonna do. You're gonna go to school and try to have a good day. And I know you will, but just in case you don't, you can take this phone with you. All you have to do is push the green button two times and it's gonna call me, okay? Try it."
Teddy took the cheap phone, purchased hastily at a gas station in north Texas, and did as his stepmother instructed. Olivia's phone chirped in the pocket of her tunic dress and she pulled it out to show him. "See? You just call me and tell me to come get you and I will, okay? All you've gotta do is call."
Teddy nodded and tucked the phone in the pocket of his jeans, his expression much less worried. "You promise?"
"Pinky promise." Olivia offered her pinky and Teddy wrapped his around it, giving the slightest smile.
"So are we all ready, bud?" Fitz asked.
Teddy nodded then looked at Olivia. "Will you come too, Mama Liv?"
"Of course. Can you wait for me and Nayirrah to get shoes?"
He nodded, walking over to his father to hug his legs. Olivia retrieved Nayirrah, enticing her with a car ride, then left the room. Fitz picked Teddy up and kissed his forehead. "You know it's gonna be okay, right? You're gonna have fun today. I promise. Do you believe me?"
Teddy shook his head. Fitz smoothed his son's mop of curls. "Did I ever tell you about the first time I was president?"
Teddy shook his head and Fitz walked over to Olivia's rocking chair and sat down with Teddy on his knee. "Well, I was scared. Scareder than scared, bud. I had never been a president before and then all of a sudden I had to be. And everyone was waiting for me to come out and take the oath, and I was in my office—remember that place?—and I was so nervous. I almost didn't go out. But then Mama Liv came in and she told me to go be brave for just a minute. Just one minute. And I did. And you know what? Once you're brave for just one minute—one teeny tiny minute—you can do it again. And it's easier every minute after that. Do you think you can do that?"
Teddy nodded as Olivia re-entered the room, Nayirrah wearing white t-strap Keds over her socks and a yellow cardigan over her navy polka-dotted onesie. "Are we ready?"
Teddy nodded again, sliding off his father's lap. They piled into Olivia's white Range Rover and Fitz drove to Teddy's school, Hanover Day School. They bypassed the drop-off lane and Fitz parked. Tom parked Fitz's black Range Rover beside them.
"Shall I escort you in?" he asked.
Fitz shook his head. "Val's already waiting inside."
Teddy's agent, Val, had been introduced to the school as his teacher's "room mom" to keep things low profile for his first year. The family unloaded and entered the clean school, already bustling with students headed to and from class. They found Teddy's class room and Olivia's eyes widened at the chaos of fifteen kindergarteners running around.
"Things were way calmer at Open House," she muttered to Fitz.
"This is what we do in the morning, Mrs. Grant," the blonde teacher, Mrs. Lebowitz, explained. "For the first hour, they just run wild. It gets it out of the way before we start lessons."
Olivia nodded then leaned closer and whispered, "He's terrified."
Mrs. Lebowitz smiled. "Everyone is. May I?"
"Please," Fitz replied.
Mrs. Lebowitz knelt to Teddy's level. "Hi Teddy. Remember me?"
Teddy nodded, still clinging to Fitz's leg. Fitz gave his head a reassuring rub. Mrs. Lebowitz pointed to his shirt. "This is cool. I like superheroes too. Batman is my favorite. Do you like Batman?"
Teddy nodded again. "I like Captain America better."
"Really?" She turned to the room and pointed to a little boy in a green shirt, playing with Legos. "See that little boy over there? That's Tommy. He likes Green Lantern. Do you think he might like your shirt?"
Teddy nodded, slowly letting go of his father's leg. Mrs. Lebowitz smiled at Olivia and Fitz then turned back to Teddy. "Why don't you go over and talk to him? Maybe help him with the Legos."
Teddy looked at Olivia and she nodded encouragingly as she squatted. "Why don't you give me and Naya hugs and kisses then go meet Tommy?"
Teddy gave them hugs and kissed Nayirrah's chubby cheek. "Love you."
"Love you," Olivia replied.
"Lub you," Nayirrah parroted with a smile.
"Where's my hug?" Fitz asked.
"Love you, daddy." Teddy gave his father's legs and squeeze then walked over to where Tommy sat surrounded by Legos.
Olivia smiled when the boy pointed at Teddy's t-shirt then at his own, sparking a spirited conversation. She frowned when a moment later, both boys removed their shirts and exchanged them. Mrs. Lebowitz gave a knowing smile. "I'll fix it."
A child's cry rang out across the room and the teacher quickly left them. Olivia turned to look at Fitz, surprised to find his ears and nose red. She smirked. "Are you crying?"
Fitz sniffed. "No. I'm just… Look at him, Livvie."
Olivia looked at Teddy, tears pricking her own eyes as he and Tommy stuck wheels on a contraption then sent it rolling. She handed Nayirrah to her father then walked over and squatted beside him. "We're gonna go, okay baby bear?"
"Okay. Bye Mama," Teddy replied, not looking away from his wheeled contraption.
"Bye." Olivia swallowed a lump as she stood and walked back to Fitz.
"You mom calls you bear? That's cool," she overheard Tommy say and a smile spread across her face as she reached Fitz.
"You're crying too," Fitz teased when Olivia swiped at her eyes with her sweater sleeve.
"Shut up and let's go."
Fitz snapped a picture on his phone to send to Mellie and Karen in Virginia, captioning it "He already made a friend."

A little while later, Olivia and Fitz sat on the house's back porch, lounging in the creaking swing. Nayirrah lay across their laps, snoring softly. After dropping Teddy off at school, they had gone to a nearby park to dawdle in case Teddy changed his mind. Nayirrah promptly tired herself out chasing and being chased by a couple's corgi. Her head on Fitz's shoulder, Olivia was almost asleep when her phone buzzed in her pocket. She pulled it out and frowned at the screen. "It's Teddy."
Fitz frowned as she clicked the answer icon then put the phone on speaker. "What's wrong baby bear?"
"Nothing Mama," Teddy replied, sounding decidedly more upbeat than he had that morning. "Can I stay at school a little longer? Mrs. Lebowitz said we're gonna go to the library after nap and I can take a book. Me and Tommy wanna get Thomas the Train books. So can I stay?"
"Of course you can stay, baby. Daddy and I will come get you when school's over, okay?"
"Okay. And I want a basketball. Tommy has one. And his own goal."
"We'll see about that this weekend, okay?"
"Okay. Bye Mama."
"Bye baby."
Teddy hung up and Olivia turned to look at Fitz, not surprised to find his eyes watering. She rolled her own glassy eyes. "You're such a wuss."
"Well you are too," he replied then pulled her closer.
At three o'clock, Olivia pulled her white Range Rover into the drop off lane, grinning as Teddy waited in line with the other children, eagerly waving as he stood beside Tommy. He bounded into the car and fastened his seat belt.
"Hi Teddy!" Nayirrah exclaimed, waving excitedly at her brother.
"Hi Naya! Hi Mama! Hi Daddy!" Teddy replied.
"Hey bud! Did you have fun today?" Fitz asked, looking at his son in the baby mirror.
Teddy nodded. "We got a room full of computers, and a science lab, and a big playground too. And we ate in the lunchroom with the big kids. And me and Tommy catched callapillers and Mrs. Lebowitz put them in a cage for us to watch them turn into butterflies! Tomorrow we're gonna watch a movie about callapillers and I told Tommy we could sit together!" Teddy answered. "Tommy's mama has a baby in her tummy. He said they're gonna name it Chelsea."
"That's nice," Olivia replied. "So do you think you'll wanna go back tomorrow?"
"Yeah!"
