The rest of the week passed grimly. Ginny had hardly spoken to Harry since she had impulsively decided to kiss him. When they were together at meal times, she avoided eye contact with him at all costs. It was Wednesday evening and the first evening the D.A would be serving their detention with the old witch. Dean and Seamus were ranting about how much he now hated Cho as they headed towards the dining room for dinner. Ginny finally interrupted their frustrations when Dean cast Cho a seething glare as they arrived in the Great Hall and Ginny protested, "I don't think she did it on purpose! I think Umbridge gave her Veritaserum. She threatened me with it afterwards when she bought us into Dumbledore's office."
Ginny had kept her mouth shut until now because she hadn't wanted Dean to know about this. Ever since the D.A had been discovered, he'd become increasingly protective over her and it sometimes got on her nerves. Now she regretted saying anything and wished she'd let them continue ranting as Dean paused mid-sstep to ask, "Seriously? Is she even allowed to use that stuff on students?" Seamus nodded and replied, "Well, considering she's headmistress now I guess she is." Dean looked appalled and asked, "Why didn't you say anything Ginny?" They had continued walking towards the table now and Dean had taken Ginny's hand in his own, holding onto her fiercely as he said, "It's bad enough that she's already tortured you so much, but I can't believe she actually threatened you."
As they drew closer to the table, Ginny let go of Dean's hand. She felt embarrassed as she noticed Harry's eyes lingering on her and Dean, probably trying to understand it. Dean sat down and Ginny did so too as Hermione slid the paper over to them, "Look what's already on the front page of the Prophet," she said disgustedly. Ginny read in a whisper:
DUMBLEDORE: DECEITFUL, DEVIOUS AND DAFT
Last night, at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, Professor Albus Dumbledore was found to have been creating an army against to the ministry in order to overthrow it and take control for himself. Dumbledore admitted to creating said army in his name (Dumbledore's Army) and he instructed Mr Harry Potter to lead students and train them in defensive magic. Potter would be the perfect instructor in this area as he had dealt with plenty of dark magic. It has been reported that Potter can cast a Patronus charm-magic that can be challenging even for a fully grown wizard!
One can only assume the reason this instruction was given is because Dumbledore wanted power over the Ministry of Magic. The whereabouts of the professor are currently unknown, but a search party is on the go and anyone who sees him must please report to Dolores Umbridge or any ministry official immediately. The wizarding world at large are encouraged to report any sightings of the deceitful and devious headmaster. Anyone found protecting him and his whereabouts will be subjected to use of Veritaserum and intense questioning by a ministry official.
Professor Dolores Umbridge has been instated as the new headmistress of Hogwarts and is in full control of the school. She has been bettering the falling standards of Hogwarts ever she was instated as High Inquisitor and she shall be changing things up a bit-all for the betterment of the school and the students.
Ginny wasn't even surprised anymore. She glanced at Harry, who was still watching her and she sighed. She knew what he was thinking: I shouldn't be caring. Then why was he staring at her that way? Ginny shook her head and couldn't eat anything. Dean frowned and whispered, "Ginny, you need to eat. We'll be suffering detention with Umbridge for another hour after this. You'll starve." Ginny shook her head and whispered, "I can't. I really have no appetite."
For the rest of the meal, Ginny sat and listened to Dean, but glancing sideways she looked at Harry and she noticed him doing the same to her. There was just too much chemistry between them and Hermione noticed as she commented, "Seriously, what is up with the two of you? You haven't said a word to each other the entire meal!" This caused Ron to glance up and he nodded in agreement, "Yeah, guys! What's up?" Ginny didn't know what to say as Harry murmured, "Umbridge…" under his breath.
Ron raised his eyebrows at him and commented, "Seriously mate…you're acting weird and this isn't because of Umbridge. Did you have another fight?" Harry shook his head, at the same time Ginny did before she realized that they should have just claimed that this is what the problem was. Now Ron was staring between them back and forth and Hermione was smirking secretly, knowing what had happened. She was too sharp for her own good.
When the long and exhausting meal ended, they all stood up, as did all the other D.A members and they all waited until the remainder of the students had left the hall. Cho tried to approach Harry, but she noticed the frosty look he was giving her before she turned away. Umbridge cleared the hall of the house tables and replaced them with desks before saying, "Right, everybody find your names and sit down. You will be writing, 'I will not deceive the headmistress,' on that paper until the hour is up! I do not want to see those quills pause for a minute. Off you go!" She said it as if she was receiving the best Christmas present ever-punishing so many students at once.
Ginny found her name on the far right hand side in the very front row. She scowled at the old witch-who obviously wanted to keep an eye on her. Harry, Ron and Hermione filed in beside her, all of them occupying a front seat. Ginny reckoned, by the look of Hermione's face, that it was the first time she'd ever received detention in her life. The look was almost comical.
As Ginny sat down in her seat and began writing, she felt the familiar scratchy feeling in her left hand and saw a new sentence forming beneath the first one. The hour dragged and by the end of it, people were clutching their hands in agony. Ginny thought to herself as she walked out the hall beside Dean, 'if only they knew what it will feel like when the week is up.' Dean paused outside the front door and gasped, "Gin! Your hand is bleeding." He was right. She hadn't even noticed the blood seeping out of it. He took her hand and murmured a spell under his breath, which paused the bleeding. He took her to the nearest bathroom and she went in to get toilet paper and wrap her hand in it. When she came out, he conjured up a safety pin and slid it in place. It looked pretty professional. Ginny grinned and said sincerely, "Thanks Dean! I hadn't even noticed!"
Dean shook his head and leaned closer as he whispered, "You need to take better care of yourself, Gin." She didn't even realize his intentions as he leant forwards and kissed her softly on the mouth. Ginny gasped in surprise and Dean. She thought about it for a second and then a vision of Harry's kiss flashed in her mind and she decided no, this is wrong.
At that moment, however she heard her brother yell, "OI! What's going on here?" Dean pulled away then, looking sufficiently embarrassed and he murmured, "I'll see you upstairs, Ginny?" She nodded as he hurried off. Ginny knew Harry was there. She didn't have to be a genius to know that. The second she'd heard Ron's voice she hadn't been concerned about her brother's reaction, but rather Harry's.
Harry was watching her, stony faced and she knew it had been the wrong thing to do. Ron yelled again, "What the hell do you think you were doing?! Kissing him?!" Ginny stared at Harry and blinked as Ron yelled at her, feeling confused and then she yelled at Ron, "Who I kiss is NONE of your business!" Ron put his hands on his hips and yelled back, "OF COURSE it's my business! I'm your brother!"
Ginny scowled at him and replied, "Oh yeah? The reason I don't tell you about my love life, Ron, is because I KNOW this is how you will react."
Ron hurled out his wand and Ginny was shocked as she said angrily, "Just because the best kiss you've ever gotten is from Aunt Muriel!" He was aiming it at her now and Harry swiftly stepped in between herself and Ron as Ginny whipped out her own wand and tried pointing it at Ron through Harry.
Ron retorted, "Oh yeah? Well I don't want my little sister snogging people in public! Take you and Cedric for example! And now Dean!" Ginny froze and whispered dangerously, "Are you saying what I think you're saying, Ron?"
Ron halted and seemed to rethink his words before Ginny yelled, "Out of the way, Harry!" Harry didn't move and so Ginny stormed passed him and up the stairs, running as fast as she could towards the girl's dormitory.
Authors Note: I know that the scene with Dean/ Ginny/ Ron /Harry only happens in HBP but because I love it so much and I've re-read it like a billion times I decided to include it in this book. It's the first time we really see Ginny stand up to Ron and it gives her character just a little more spark. I was so tempted to let Ginny blurt to Ron there and then that she'd kissed Harry, but I somehow think Harry wouldn't approve of that and I don't want them to have another argument anytime soon.
Also thank you to Pottermum for all the reviews. They are much appreciated!
P.S: I know it isn't Cho who betrays the D.A in the books, but I liked that it was her in the movies so I kept it that way
