Chapter 4: The Best Joke Ever

Eric POV

She pinned me and when she was called off by the joker, she stands up and brushes herself off. Before she leaves I look up to see a hand in my face. Grabbing it, she helps me up with a grin.

"You fought fair, however, in a life or death situation you can't afford to 'think it through' you have to learn to act on your feet, act now, think later." Fire flashes in her eyes as she speaks about it. "Just trust your instincts to keep you safe."

Grinning to myself, I step out of the ring. Four walks over to me and puts a hand on my shoulder. Looking at him I nod, it was the girl we knew two years ago.

"What did she say? After the fight, I mean." He asks me, curiosity written all over his face.

"She just told me to trust my instincts. In a life or death fight to let my instincts take over to protect myself and id do ok." I say. "She really has changed, just not sure if it's for the better or worse yet."

He nods, just as he's opening his mouth to respond, he name is called into the ring to fight. Shock is written all over his face when he sees his opponent, it's a Candor kid, named Austin.

Four POV

I stared at Austin as he walked into the ring, I was pretty tall, but he was taller. My mere 6'1" height looked dwarfed next to his 6'6" frame. Harley looked at me and grinned. Her grin gave me the confidence to defeat my opponent.

Austin looked at me and growled, he seemed to think of me as just a bug he intended to squash. I carefully studied his moves, he left his stomach unguarded. That was going to be my in. As we circled each other I waited for him to open up for an attack.

"TODAY INITIATES!" Joker yelled.

That was what I was waiting for, Jokers yelling had distracted Austin enough for me to dart in and punch his solar plexus. It got him down and I had the chance to knee him in the chest and sent a well-aimed to his neck and he went down, unable to get up.

Having to fight off my father while in Abnegation had helped me with speed and precision. He used his belt helped me with my speed and agility, my precision came from having to knock him out so he could sleep off the alcohol.

Stepping out of the ring and rolling my shoulders, I looked at Harley and grinned. I know she was calculating how I had managed that. However, when I got a good look at her face, she looked bored and appeared to be falling asleep. When I stopped in front of her she popped on of her eyes open and grinned at me. Grinning back at her, I leaned against the wall next to her. Just as I was closing my eyes I felt a sharp poke to my side. Glancing to the side, I nodded to her.

"Your too Stiff when you fight, Four. Gotta relax and be comfortable. Come with me tonight, im getting a new tattoo. You are Dauntless now, you gotta start acting like it." Harley whispered at me fiercely.

"Fine, I'll get a tattoo." I whispered back. "What are you gonna get?"

She shrugged, "I'm thinking about a 'J' that matches Mr. J's tat on his left cheek bone."

I nod, it makes sense, they are something of an item, you can see it in the way they move. He moves, she moves. They react to each other like magnets. It's interesting to watch. They seem to complete each other.

Later that night we met up after dinner just outside the tattoo and piercing studio, I admire how at ease she is with the bigger tattoo artist. After training she said to meet her here after dinner then went off on her own. When I didn't see her at dinner I assumed that she was still getting cleaned up.

Her outfit consisted of skin tight black pants with rips down the sides, mid-calf heeled combat style boots that had to be border-line platforms. The shirt she was wearing was also skin tight, back-less, and sleeveless, at the bottom of the back there was a tie corset type thing, and a leather strap across the top of the back of the shirt.

Harley POV

I wore on of my less 'flashy' outfits since it was just Four and me going to get tattoos, but I still wore my 'impossibly high heeled' combat boots. Mr. J doesn't know anything about female fashion. Sure, I wore break neck height heels and showed more skin than most girls are comfortable with, but I was comfortable and that's what counted at the end of the day.

When I heard footsteps approaching, I looked up and saw Four walking toward me and looking slightly calculating. Shaking my head slightly, I walked into the tattoo parlor with him. Quickly finding Bud, I told him what I wanted this time.

"You did Joker's 'j' on his cheek-bone, right?"

"Yeah, kiddo, I did. Is that what you want? Another tattoo on your face?" he asked with a smile.

I shake my head, "No, but I want a bigger, same style on my right shoulder." Glancing over my shoulder at Four, who looked positively uncomfortable, I turned back to Bud, "just a sec, that is Four, I want you to do his tattoo first."

He nods and I walk over to Four. "So, what tattoo are you gonna get?"

"I don't know yet. They all look so…dramatic." He says with a shrug.

"You can design your own tattoo as well. Go tell Bud what you want. He will draw it out, if you like it he will tattoo it on you, if not we can come back early tomorrow and you'll have all night to think about what you want." I say quickly.

He nods, "I think I am gonna have to think about it tonight. If you want to get yours, I'll wait for you."

I smile, "Thanks. It shouldn't take too long for what I want." I turn to Bud. "BUD! Im ready, Four and I are gonna come back in the morning for his, if that's ok."

Forty-five minutes later, I am sporting a bandaged right shoulder and a very large smile. Looking over at Four, I got an idea. We started planning my 're-birth' after Dauntless Initiation is over. This is going to be the Best Joke Ever!
