Chapter 8- Loss of innocence (mature and sensitive content)
"What's wrong sweetie?", Cole asked, as he noticed the concern on Heavenly's face. "I am really worried", Heavenly shared. "About what?", Cole asked. "I haven't seen Shaniah this whole week", Heavenly said. "She is probably sick.. no need to worry", Cole reasoned. "I have tried to call her house number and no one answers", Heavenly said. "She might be back next week...she probably got the flu or something", Cole reasoned. "I'm still worried... I feel that there's something wrong", Heavenly said. "Ok if she doesn't come next week I'll talk to mommy and see if we can go over to her house to see if she's alright", Cole said. "Thank you daddy", Heavenly said, giving Cole a big hug. "Welcome baby", Cole replied, kissing her forehead.
Meanwhile in Shaniah's house. "Mommy where you going?", Shaniah asked. "I'm going out... please don't give Anthony a hard time", Nicole said. "Mommy can I come with you?", Shaniah asked. "No Anthony is home he'll take care of you", Nicole said, as she applied her lip gloss. "Mommy please don't leave me with him", Shaniah pleaded. "Don't start with your whiny crap Anthony is a good man... your father died years ago and he isn't coming back", Nicole said, as Shaniah winced in response. "I'm sorry I don't know why I said that... but you are going to fine I'll be back soon", Nicole stated. "He's a monster and I hate him... he hurt me mommy", Shaniah cried. "He was just trying to discipline you", Nicole said. "NO HE WASN'T", Shaniah hollered. "Better watch your tone little girl I ain't one of your little friends understand", Nicole cautioned, Shaniah crossed her arms angrily. "UNDERSTOOD". "Yes ma'am", Shaniah mumbled. "Say what?". "Yes ma'am", Shaniah replied, a little louder. "Good now I have to be on my way be good", Nicole said, as she left the house. "Shaniah", Anthony called from the living room. Shaniah could feel a lump in her throat as she made her way to her living room. "Yes Anthony", Shaniah replied. "Come sit next to me", Anthony said. Shaniah shook her head. "What's the matter with you come over here", Anthony ordered. Shaniah shook her head as she made a run for it to her room, Anthony immediately ran after her, and he made it to her room before she could close the door. "LEAVE ME ALONE", Shaniah cried. "I don't want to hurt you I promise you'll like it just be a good girl for me", Anthony said. "NO Please just let me be I'm tired of you touching me all the time... please just leave me alone and I won't tell my mommy", Shaniah said, as Anthony had started unbuckling his belt. "But I have never hurt you before... I only do these things because I care about you now just be a good girl". Shaniah shook her head as Anthony grabbed her and threw her on the bed.
Phoebe was helping Heavenly to clean her room. "Who's jacket is that?", Phoebe asked, pointing at a black leather jacket. "It's Shaniah's", Heavenly said. "Can I see it?... it's so cute", Phoebe said, as Heavenly handed her the jacket, immediately she touched the jacket she was hit with a premonition; In that premonition, Shaniah could be seen crying, as she held her stomach, and then the premonition abruptly ended. "Mommy what happened? what did you see?", Heavenly asked, as could see the fear in Phoebe's eyes. "I saw Shaniah she was... hurt... Prue... Piper Paige", Phoebe called, as Heavenly ran out of the room and called them. "What's the matter?", Prue asked, as they walked into the room. "I had a premonition...Shaniah she was hurt", Phoebe, explained. Then in that moment the doorbell rang. They all walked downstairs and Paige got the door. "Shaniah what are you doing here?... where is your Mom?", Paige asked, as she led Shaniah inside to the living room. "What happened", Heavenly asked. "It's my mom's boyfriend", Shaniah sobbed. "Umm.. Heavenly can you please go upstairs so we can talk to Shaniah", Phoebe said, she was sick to her stomach. "But I want to help", Heavenly said. "I know sweetheart but we don't want her to feel embarrassed", Phoebe explained, as Heavenly obeyed and went upstairs. "What did your mom's boyfriend do to you?", Piper asked, as she handed Shaniah a cup of water. "Oh my God", Prue said, as she noticed the bruises that were on Shaniah's leg, Shaniah was wearing a skirt. Phoebe had started to tear up, but she kept together. "He hurt me inside my private", Shaniah sobbed. The sisters decided to call the authorities, and they put Shaniah to bed with Heavenly. "So she walked to your house all alone?", Daryl asked. "Yes and I can't believe that any one would do this to a little girl", Piper said. "Sadly this types of cases are very common", Daryl said. "That disgusting bastard", Paige stated. "Can she stay here? while we go and give Shaniah's mom and her boyfriend a visit", Daryl said. "Of course she can and we are going to take her to the hospital", Prue said. "She couldn't even stand up properly and I don't think I'll be able to forget the her eyes filled with pain", Paige cried, as Phoebe hugged her. "It never gets easier and there are times I have to remind myself that I am a cop or I would have committed murder", Daryl shared. "This people are worst than demons", Prue said. "Thank you for your time we will do everything in our power to ensure her safety", Phoebe said. "You all are amazing thank you", Daryl replied, as he and the other officers left.
The next morning Heavenly didn't have to go to school because she was too worried about Shaniah, and she followed Prue, Phoebe and Shaniah to the hospital. "Are you her mother?", The doctor asked, after he was done with the examination. "No we are just temporary guardians", Prue replied. "Alright can I talk to you in private?", The doctor asked, and Heavenly and Shaniah were sent to wait in the waiting area, while Phoebe and Prue went to the doctor's office. "Is she alright?", Phoebe asked. "Not really... from I am seeing she was raped repeatedly", The doctor said. "How long do you think this has been happening?", Prue asked. "Approximately a week due to the bruise", The doctor explained, as Phoebe started to cry. "I'm sorry", Phoebe said, as the doctor handed her a tissue. "She is just nine years old", Prue said. "I know this type of cases are always the hardest for me... I suggest if you haven't already you should involve the authorities", The doctor said. "Yes we already yesterday", Phoebe said. "Is she OK to be discharged?", Prue asked. "Yes here are some pain relievers for her and she needs all the rest she can get and I advice that she meets with a therapist", The doctor said. "Thank you", Phoebe said. "Thank you", Prue said. Phoebe and Prue went and got Shaniah and Heavenly and they went home and Leo was there. "Can you heal her?", Phoebe whispered to Leo. "I don't think I can it goes against the rules", Leo explained. "I wish you could", Phoebe said. "And even if I could it would expose magic to her", Leo reasoned. "I guess the pain killers will do", Phoebe stated. "I'm sorry... I cannot just heal mortals if demons weren't involved", Leo said. "Don't worry about it", Phoebe said.
Later that night Shaniah refused to talk or relate with anyone and her eyes were filled with sadness. "What's wrong with Shaniah?", Heavenly asked. "She was hurt", Prue replied. "But she is not talking to me", Heavenly said. "She just needs time just give her some space", Phoebe said, as she kissed Heavenly on the forehead. "OK", Heavenly replied. That night Shaniah kept having night mares and her screams kept waking Heavenly. "Are you OK Shaniah?", Phoebe asked walking into the room with Cole. At the sight of Cole Shaniah started to scream hysterically. "LEAVE ME ALONE... PLEASE DON'T HURT ME", Shaniah screamed. "Shaniah it's just my daddy", Heavenly said, as she hugged Shaniah. After a kiss Phoebe gave Cole a signal so he would leave. "It's alright you're safe now no one is going to hurt you here", Phoebe soothed, as Shaniah held on to Phoebe like her life depended on it. "He did it again", Shaniah whispered, as her eyes were swollen with tears. "It's alright you are safe now", Phoebe whispered, kissing Shaniah on her forehead. "Go to sleep baby", Phoebe told Heavenly. "What can I do to help?", Heavenly asked. "I know baby but just go to bed Shaniah is going to be alright", Phoebe assured. "OK... feel better Shaniah I love you", Heavenly said, as she went to sleep. Phoebe then carried Shaniah to the living room, and went and got her water to drink. "Do you want to tell me about the dream?", Phoebe asked, she didn't want to push Shaniah, this was the first time she talked since the horrible night. Shaniah nodded softly as tears poured down. "Take your time", Phoebe soothed. "He..hurt... me...again", Shaniah said, between sobs. "Who hurt you?", Phoebe asked. "Anthony...my mom's boyfriend... he would always tell me to sit next to him so he could touch my private... and he would put something inside my private and it hurt", Shaniah said, as Phoebe rubbed her back. "What did he put inside you?", Phoebe asked, as a lump formed in her throat she had never dealt with this issue in her life. "I think it's his private", Shaniah said. "How long has he been doing this "For a week now... I tried to tell my mom but she never listens to me", Shaniah sobbed. "It's alright sweetie take deep breathes I believe you.. we all believe you", Phoebe said, as she tried to pull herself together as a few tears were able to escape. "I'm scared... I just want to die", Shaniah said. "Don't say that you are stronger and this is not your fault... Anthony is a monster and he hurt you... it's not your fault", Phoebe stated, as her voice trembled, as more tears poured down. Shaniah nodded, as she continued to cry. "I will be right back just drink your water", Phoebe said. Shaniah nodded. Phoebe went upstairs to the washroom and she closed the door before allowing herself to cry freely. "Phoebe?", Cole called as he knocked on the bathroom door. "Yeah", Phoebe's voice cracked. "Are you OK? can I come in?", Cole asked. "Yeah come in", Phoebe said, as Cole opened the door, closing it behind him before taking Phoebe in his arms. "I can't believe it... how can anyone do such a thing she is a little girl and he just took away her innocence", Phoebe cried softly. "Everything is going to be alright", Cole soothed, as he kissed her neck. "How can anyone survive from such a thing she is nine... I can't imagine if this happened to Heavenly", Phoebe said. "I know it's tough but Shaniah will get through this... just go and stay with her", Cole said. "I know I will stay with her until she falls asleep", Phoebe said, as she gave Cole a kiss and went downstairs. "Shaniah honey are you ready to go to bed?", Phoebe asked. Shaniah nodded. "OK let's go baby", Phoebe said, as she carried Shaniah in her arms and made her way upstairs.
"Where is my daughter?", Nicole asked, as she barged into the Halliwell manor. "Shh I just put the babies to sleep... Oh Nicole", Paige said. "What are you doing here?", Prue asked. "Why is my daughter here?", Nicole asked, blatantly ignoring Prue's question. "How do you know that she's here?", Paige asked. "Where else would she be?", Nicole asked, in a condescending tone. "Oh so you found out why didn't you protect your daughter?", Piper asked. "The police came and took my boyfriend claiming that he raped my daughter and they took him away why didn't you tell me that you had my child?", Nicole asked. "Because you don't deserve to know", Phoebe said, walking into the scene. "The last time I checked she is my daughter and not yours", Nicole said. "You don't deserve anything", Phoebe said, her voice filled with anger. "Why are you so emotional", Nicole said. "WHEN SHE NEEDED YOU THE MOST YOU TURNED A BLIND EYE HOW DARE YOU", Phoebe hollered angrily, the room was silenced as everyone watched. "Don't you dare blame me for this you don't know what happened", Nicole said, as tears stung her eyes. "I know that you didn't protect your daughter you had a man in your house molesting your daughter", Phoebe said, as her heart stung as she released those words. "She never told me", Nicole stated. "Yes she did you were just to dumb to see it", Phoebe said, as she challenged Nicole looking her right in the eyes. "She never said that he touched her.. if she told me I would done something", Nicole tried to defend herself. "She told you that he hurt her what do you think that means?", Phoebe asked. Nicole didn't know what to say she just stood there as tears continued to fall down. "And can you explain why you would always find him coming out of her room almost every night?", Phoebe asked. "He said that he was checking on her", Nicole whispered audibly. "I think you knew exactly what was going on or had an idea but you wanted a man so bad that you let it happen", Phoebe said. "Just give my daughter", Nicole ordered. "Why so you can hurt her more", Paige said. "Blondie hush", Nicole snapped. "Don't talk to my sister like that", Prue warned. "She needs to mind her business matter of fact this has nothing to do with any of you", Nicole stated. "Because of your irresponsibility you aren't going anywhere with Shaniah", Prue stated. "Me irresponsible? that's a joke... you have no idea who you are dealing with", Nicole said. "What are you going to do? sass and insult us to death", Piper said. "GIVE ME MY DAUGHTER", Nicole screamed. "She isn't going anywhere with you", Phoebe stated, as Nicole glared at her. Then Shaniah and Heavenly walked into the living room. "Hey baby it's time to go home", Nicole said, as she walked towards Shaniah. Shaniah moved back and shook her head. "Honey it's me mommy", Nicole said, as tears fell down her eyes. "You had your chance to protect her but you didn't", Piper said. "And how is this your business? this is my family issue", Nicole stated. "You are so ignorant just because she isn't blood doesn't mean we shouldn't help her", Prue said. "Shaniah come on let's go home", Nicole said. Shaniah shook her head, as she felt so much anger. "She said no go away", Heavenly said. "Little girl better mind your business", Nicole said, as she walked towards Heavenly. "Don't you dare touch her", Phoebe warned. "Yeah my mom is stronger than you", Heavenly said. "Heavenly", Phoebe warned. "Shaniah come on let's go home", Nicole said. "LEAVE ME ALONE", Shaniah screamed. "Fine", Nicole said, as she left heartbroken. "I thought she would never leave", Heavenly stated. "Heavenly stop it", Phoebe warned. "Sorry... what are we having for breakfast?", Heavenly asked. "Pancakes", Piper replied. "Yay... and Shaniah you get to eat the pancakes again", Heavenly said. Shaniah just stood there not even reacting. "Come one let's go change... Heavenly can you give Shaniah one of your dresses?", Phoebe asked. "Sure I'll give you the purple one with the bow", Heavenly said. Shaniah once again did not react. "Are you OK Shaniah?", Heavenly asked. "No my stomach hurts", Shaniah said, as she started to cry. "It's alright sweetie... Heavenly why don't you go and wash up for breakfast and I'll deal with Shaniah", Phoebe said. "OK mommy..I hope you feel better", Heavenly said, as she gave Shaniah a hug before leaving. "What's wrong Shaniah?", Phoebe asked. "My stomach hurts", Shaniah said. "Come and lie down", Phoebe said, as she led Shaniah to the couch. "I'll get her some water", Paige volunteered. "I'll go get the pancakes ready", Piper stated, as she and Paige went to the kitchen. "Can I talk to you for second?", Prue asked Phoebe. "OK I'll be right back Shaniah", Phoebe said, as Shaniah nodded. Prue and Phoebe went to the sun room. "I managed to get a copy of all the test results so we could make sure that monster rots in jail", Prue said. "That's great we can go and give to Daryl", Phoebe said. "Yeah after breakfast and I say we involve a social worker so Shaniah could stay here", Prue said. "That's a great idea you are the best", Phoebe said, giving Prue a hug. "I know I am", Prue said, as they both laughed.
After breakfast Phoebe and Piper went to hand the test results to Daryl so it could be added to the case, and Daryl was able to get a social worker involved, so Shaniah could stay with the Halliwells. Paige, Prue and Shaniah went to get Shaniah's belongings, and Nicole was still allowed to visit her daughter, but Shaniah didn't want to talk to Nicole. "So this is your home for now until after the hearing at least", Phoebe told Shaniah. "I wish you were my mom", Shaniah said, Phoebe didn't know how to respond so she just hugged Shaniah. "Mommy I'm hungry", Heavenly announced as she walked into the sun room. "Lunch will soon be ready", Piper said. "Thank you aunt Piper", Heavenly replied. "No problem honey... I hope you guys like chicken lasagne", Piper said. "Like? I love it", Heavenly said, as Shaniah smiled. Though a small smile, it still made everyone feel warm inside knowing that Shaniah was able to smile again. "Why don't you girls go and play with Wyatt and Sophia while lunch gets ready", Piper said. "OK come on Shaniah", Heavenly said, as they held hands and walked out.
"Come on girls you are going to be late for school you've got to hurry up", Prue said. Shaniah still wasn't talking much but she was interacting through her facial expressions and head movements, and night mares still bothered her but they had decreased. "Where's mommy?", Heavenly asked. "She went early to work and your daddy will be picking the both of you up after school... and Shaniah Heavenly's dad is going to be your lawyer so after school you have to start on your statement alright", Piper informed. Shaniah nodded in response. "Who is going to stay with Sophia and Wyatt?", Heavenly asked. "They are coming with me to the club and when your daddy comes to pick you he will come and pick them", Piper replied. "Where is aunt Paige?", Heavenly asked. "She went to work.. now enough questions and eat your food before you get late", Prue said. "Yes ma'am", Heavenly said. After breakfast Prue dropped Shaniah and Heavenly at school. Nicole arrived at their school right before classes begun. "I'm sorry I didn't listen to you... I know you're angry with me and I'm so sorry for allowing that monster to hurt you", Nicole said. Shaniah just nodded uncomfortably. "Would it be OK if I come over to Halliwell house to see you?", Nicole asked. Shaniah hesitated, but then nodded. "Thank you baby", Nicole said, as she gave Shaniah a hug. Then Nicole left while Shaniah started to cry and Heavenly tried her best comforted her. Heavenly did not know what happened to Shaniah specifically, but she was sure that Shaniah was really hurt. Some of the teachers and the Principal were informed of what happened, so they could be able to accommodate Shaniah, and later through the day Shaniah threw up, because of all the mixed feelings of fear, pain and agony hitting her all at once. During lunch Shaniah was in the nurse's office taking a nap. "She is seriously hurt", Heavenly said, as she wiped her tear she had been crying. "I hope she gets better", Akita said, as she hugged Heavenly. "Yeah me too I hate when my friends are sad", Heavenly stated.
After school Cole came to pick Shaniah and Heavenly, Amber came and picked Akita up. "Daddy", Heavenly said, running into his arms. "How was your day girls?", Cole asked. "Ok for me but Shaniah was sick", Heavenly said. "Are you feeling better?", Cole asked. Shaniah nodded in response. "Alright let's go I got Sophia and Wyatt already so we are going home", Cole said. "Who's home now?", Heavenly asked. "Maybe aunt Paige but mommy called me she is on her way or she might already be home", Cole informed. "Alright let's roll", Heavenly said, as Cole laugh. As they got home Phoebe was home. "Hello my babies", Phoebe greeted, as she gave Cole, Heavenly, Shaniah, Wyatt and Sophia each a kiss. "How was work?", Cole asked. "It was great actually what about you?", Phoebe asked. "It was good.. my boss is giving me a week off", Cole said. "Ohh that's great we can have more time together", Phoebe said. "And I get to spend time with you too", Heavenly added. "That's right", Cole said. "You guys go change so you can eat", Phoebe said. "Ok mommy", Heavenly replied, as she held Shaniah's hand as they made their way upstairs. "I think it's nap time for Wyatt and Sophia", Phoebe said. "I can take them both", Cole said, as he took Sophia from Phoebe's arms. "I can help", Phoebe offered. "No it's alright I can shimmer remember", Cole said. "Remember Shaniah is here", Phoebe whispered. "I know I'll shimmer to our room to put down Sophia then walk to Piper's room to put Wyatt down", Cole replied. "Alright", Phoebe said, as Cole shimmered to his room.
It's been three weeks since Shaniah had been staying with the Halliwells she was put to therapy and she was responding positively to it. Nicole tried to come around, but at times Shaniah wouldn't want to see Nicole, and though it hurt Nicole she understood. It was Saturday morning, the morning of hearing, where Shaniah had to face the man that abused her. Cole was going to be Shaniah's lawyer. "Now you have to trust me he is not going to hurt you", Cole assured. Everyone was having breakfast in the kitchen and they were all dressed to go to court, except Leo who was staying with Wyatt and Sophia. Nicole was meeting them at the court. "I'm scared", Shaniah stated. "Don't be scared I will protect you", Heavenly said, giving Shaniah a hug. "We are all here for you", Phoebe said. "Remember you have to tell the judge everything so he can go to jail forever", Prue said. "I will", Shaniah said. "Alright eat up so we can make it on time", Phoebe said.
When the Halliwells and Shaniah arrived at court Nicole was already there, and you see the fear in her eyes. "Deep breathes", Cole told Shaniah as they took their positions. "All rise", The judge said, as the court commences. "I am Cole Turner and I am the prosecutor", Cole introduced. "And I'm Daniel Garcia and I'm the defendant", Daniel introduced. "What does your client plead?", The judge asks Daniel. "Not guilty", Daniel replied. "Let me begin by saying that this man Anthony Lamar sexually abused and raped my client Shaniah Brown and we have the bruises and the tests to prove it", Cole started. "I never touched her", Anthony stated. "Order in the court", The judge said. "Here are the tests from the doctor and pictures of the bruises on her belly and thighs", Cole said, handing the papers to the judge. "How do we know if the mother didn't abuse her child and blame it all on him", Daniel said. "YOU ARE SICK", Nicole screamed. "Order", The judge said. "Can the mother of the child Nicole Brown come forward please", The judge said, as Nicole came forward. "Now you are to say the truth and nothing but the truth so help you God", The judge said. As Nicole nods in approval. "Alright you are the single parent to Shaniah right?", The judge said. "Yes I am". "Who is Anthony Lamar to you?", The judge asks. "He was my boyfriend", Nicole said, as everyone could hear the pain in her voice. "Were you aware that your daughter was being molested in any way?", The judge asked. "I suspected it... but didn't want to believe it... I didn't know he was capable of doing that, Nicole confessed, as she tried to fight the tears. "How exactly did you suspect it?", The judge asked. "When I would wake at night to use bathroom... I would see him coming out of her room.. but he would say that he was just checking on her... I felt something was wrong but I didn't want to believe it", Nicole confessed, as a tissue was handed to her. "If you suspected that something was going on why didn't you do anything about or are you lying?", Daniel asked. "I was stupid and blinded by love and I was irresponsible", Nicole said. "Did your daughter ever tell you directly that this man touched her?", The judge asked. "She did not use those words but she called him a monster", Nicole said. "How long have you known Mr Lamar?", The judge asked. "A year but he just moved in a month a ago", Nicole replied. "Alright we are done here can I please have Shaniah Brown come forward", The judge calls, as Nicole goes back to her seat and Shaniah takes her. "Please have a sit just tell us everything that happened", The judge said calmly. Phoebe didn't originally want to bring Heavenly, because she didn't want Heavenly to know how horrible humans could be, but this was a lesson Heavenly had to be taught. "First he bought my favourite snacks and then he would tell me to sit on his lap... then a couple days later when my mom went out he told me to take off my underwear and sit on his lap... and he would touch me in my private", Shaniah shared, as she started to cry, and the Judge had a guard bring in a support dog to keep Shaniah calm. After a while Shaniah was able to be calm, so the judge decided to keep the dog there. "When you are ready you can continue", The judge said. "He continued to touch me there all the time... then he started coming to my room at night so he could touch me and sometimes he would lie down next to be... and he would rub his body on me... one night he came into my room he laid on top me and put his private into my private... and he held my mouth while I screamed... he did that three times... the last time my mom left me with him and he did the same thing... when he finished I ran out of the house and went to my friend Heavenly's house... and that's where I have been since", Shaniah said, as she felt a little better with the support dog. "Is there anything else you want to say?", The judge asked. "No". "Thank you Shaniah", The judge as Shaniah went back to her seat next to Cole, and the guard took the dog back. After Shaniah's confession, Daniel, Anthony's lawyer was visibly ashamed to be Anthony's lawyer. "What do you have to say for yourself Anthony Lamar?", The judge asked. "I didn't do it.. yes she sat on my lap but I never touched her and plus she always liked it", Anthony said. "You are a disgusting human being how can you say a 9 ear old child would like being violated.. you are not only evil but you are also stupid", The judge said. "But she liked sitting on my lap". "Anthony Lamar I give you 20 years in jail with no parole", The judge stated. "WHAT YOU CAN'T BE SERIOUS", Anthony hollered. "Take this piece of garbage out of here", The judge ordered, as Anthony was hand cuffed and dragged out of court. "Rot in hell", Cole said.
After court the Halliwells, Shaniah, and Nicole went to the manor to have lunch. "I want to say that I am so sorry for my behaviour towards everyone... I'm sorry", Nicole said, once everyone was gathered on the dinning table. "Apology accepted", Heavenly said, as everyone smiled. "And Heavenly Shaniah is blessed to have a friend like you", Nicole said with a smile. "Thank you", Heavenly said. "I think I would like to go home", Shaniah said. "Baby you don't have to you can stay here for as long as you want you don't have to come home if you don't want to", Nicole said. "I know but I miss you... and I forgive you", Shaniah said, as a few tears escaped her eyes. "Oh my God... thank you so much", Nicole said, as Shaniah walked over and gave Nicole a long awaited hug. "Thank you everyone for caring about me... I will never forget it", Shaniah said, as she went back to her seat. "You are like family now", Paige stated, as Shaniah couldn't help but smile.
