Artemis POV:
I'm back in that room. No doors, no windows, just walls made of concrete.
"You really think you can escape me?" a voice says behind me.
I spin around and am face to face with him. He smiles maliciously at me. I jump back, terrified of what he will do. He rushes towards me and I scream until his hands are on my neck. I gasp for air.
"You think you can leave me? Take my baby and leave. You can never escape me. I will always find you," he whispers in my ear. I feel his hot breathe on my neck.
I try to scream and fight but he only tightens his grip more.
"I will find you," he whispers.
Dots appear in my vision, and soon I blackout from the loss of air.
My eyes jolt open and I gasp over and over for air. It's as if I can still feel his grip on my neck, not allowing me to breathe. I grab at my neck, sure his hand is still there, clawing to remove it. I need to breathe. Let me breathe!
"Artemis, stop! You are going to hurt yourself. Stop!" Leah yells at me, grabbing my hands and forcing them away from my neck.
Can't she see his hands on my neck? Why hasn't she removed them? I gasp for air, and her eyes widen.
"Artemis listen to me. Breathe with me," she takes my hand and places it over her heart, her breathing is steady," In… Out… In… Out…," we stay like this for a few minutes and finally I am able to breathe again.
"Thank you," I say.
"I use to get panic attacks to. I know what it feels like, the feeling of not being able to catch your breathe. When it happens try grounding yourself. Find something in the room to focus on, then start to slow your breathing back down. Just like we did, in… out… in… out… okay?" Leah tells me.
"I don't know if it will work but I will try it," I say, quietly.
"It used to help me after everything. Sam was actually the one who told me to do that," she says.
"Sam helped you a lot through it all, didn't he?" I ask her.
"He did," she replies.
"But how were you able to trust him? After… you know," I ask.
"It was hard, very hard and it took a lot of time. He was very patient and very persistent. He showed me over and over that he wouldn't hurt me, and finally, I started to trust him," she says and I nod, understanding but not sure I could do that, trust again," He's worried about you, you know?"
"Who?" I ask, knowing the answer.
"You know who. You sent him out of the room but he didn't leave. He's sitting out in the hallway," she tells me.
"Why?" I say almost angrily.
"Because he cares about you and he's worried about you," she says, and I look away from her.
"So? I don't want him here. I ca- don't care about him," I reply, my heart hurting.
"Sure you don't. Either way it doesn't change how he feels," she says, shrugging.
"He needs to move on," is all I say.
"By the way, your mom went to get something to eat and get some sleep. I told her I would stay with you for the night so she could get some rest," she says, changing the subject and for that I am grateful.
"What time is it?" I ask.
"About 6."
"It's still Friday?"
"Yup. Do you need anything?" she asks.
"Um… well I could use a shower and then something to eat." I tell her.
"I'll call a nurse about both," she replies, smiling at me.
About 15 minutes later a nurse, whose name I think is Cindy, come in.
"I hear you want a shower," I nod," Well first we need to take these I.V.'s out, and you may feel some pain from not having them in, but not too much. Do you mind helping getting her in the shower?" she asks looking at Leah.
"I can shower myself," I say.
"Hospital protocol. You have to have a nurse with you and you aren't supposed to be up and walking," she tells me.
"I'll help, it's not a problem." Leah tells her.
Once she took all the I.V.'s out and got me into the wheelchair, Cindy wheels me into the bathroom off to the side of my room. Opposite of the bathroom door is a toilet and sink, above the sink is a mirror. To the left is the walk-in shower.
She wheels me in and with Leah on one side and her on the other they help me stand up for the first time in what feels like years. Then they help me take the hospital gown off, along with the bandages.
My eyes catch the reflection in the mirror and I turn to get a better look. The girl starring back at me is no one I recognize. Her dark hair is dirty and tangled up. Her eyes loss of any hope. Along her jawline are many bruises in different stages of healing. Her neck has bruising where someone grabbed her by it multiple times. The rest of her body, minus her slight bump of a stomach, has many bruises, again in different stages of healing, though many still black, blue and purple.
I thought that was the worst of it all, but I was wrong. I turn my back to the mirror and the girl mimics what I do. When I see her back, I gasp. Her back has bruising as well but that isn't what gets me. It's the long, deep gashes and welts that are there. Tears fall from my eyes as I wonder who could do this to this poor girl.
Leah and Cindy help me shower. The water feels amazing on my aching body. After cleaning up, I ask to just sit there in the hot water. I sit there until the water runs cold. I turn the water off, letting them know I am done. They help me get dressed in a clean gown and re-bandage my back.
Once back in bed and hooked back up to all the I.V.s, Cindy leaves and returns with food a few minutes later. She brings in spaghetti and meatballs, with garlic bread. Though hospital food isn't that appetizing, I dig in.
By the time I am done eating, I am exhausted. I fall asleep with ease, though terrified what might be waiting.
Embry's POV:
Leah comes out of her room and silently closes the door behind her.
"I can only talk for a minute," she says, and I stand up to meet her.
"How is she?" I ask.
"As good as she can be. She's having nightmares and panic attacks. She doesn't want to be touched but I am not sure that's because of the pain or the touch itself. She got a shower and ate something earlier. And now she is asleep, hopefully until morning. She needs it to help her heal," Leah tells me.
"I need to be there! God damnit!" I swear.
"Embry, calm down," Leah whispers to me, looking around.
"I can't, I need her, Leah. I need her," I beg.
"I will make a deal with you. She is asleep now so I will let you see her. You can't say anything to her. I will give you a few minutes and then I want you to go home and get some sleep. Besides I am sure your mom wants an update as well," she tells me.
"Okay, deal," I tell her, eager to see her.
"But after this, you need to give her time to cope. That's what she needs, Embry," she tells me, and I nod, understanding.
Leah opens the door and I go in, making my steps as silent as I can. I find the bed and see her, and my breathe catches in my throat. She is so beautiful. I walk over to her bed and just stare at her. I lightly trace my fingers on her cheek and she sighs in her sleep. I freeze to make sure I didn't wake her up.
"Embry, times up," Leah whispers to me from the door.
I drag myself away from her. Glancing back one last time to see her sleeping face.
"Thank you," I tell Leah, once we are back in the hallway, "I appreciate what you are doing for her, for me."
She nods and goes back into her room. I turn and head home, but just for a little while.
Awe! With Artemis and Leah bonding and Embry's moment with her, I just loved writing this chapter. Hopefully you guys enjoyed it as well. And remember that I love hearing what you guys think! Till next time…
