A/N: I think this story needs a revision. Nothing too drastic but the first chapter really needs redone. It also needs a better summary but I'm struggling with that. For now though, we'll continue forward.
Enjoy.
Chapter Six:
At night Harry had a dream. It started out normally; he was back and home, with his brother and sister, planning their next hunt into the woods to help their mom. The three waded into the denser than normal forest and it instantly became dark. Harry squinted and turned, searching for Hermione only to find that she had vanished. Harry called out in worry and turned to Cloud. But Cloud was far ahead, walking on a different path than he was. Panicked he was about to lose his brother too, Harry reached out, running after the blonde. He turned back and reached out a hand but before Harry could catch him, Cloud was gone. Alone in the dark, Harry wrapped his arms around himself, scared.
A soft voice echoed from the darkness and Harry turned around. It called to him but not by his name. Wizard it said and Harry knew the voice was searching for him. He hurried towards it, excited when the word became louder and louder until it was shouting.
"I'm here!"
The dark forest vanished and Harry found himself in a cold metal cell. In the cell slept the red lion he and Cloud had found in the science department. The lion lifted its head and stared right into Harry's eyes.
"Wizard…"
"I'm dreaming," Harry said out loud. His voice had a strange echo to it even though he wasn't shouting.
"You have Seer blood. You're desire to speak to me has activated it and allowed you to have a vision. We don't have much time."
"How do you know?" Harry asked. He knelt next to the lion who stared at him closely.
"I have met Seers before. Are you not aware of your own power?"
He shook his head. "This is a first for me."
"The gift of visions and future sight is usually passed from parent to child."
"I don't know my parents," Harry admitted. "They died when I was young. I have very little memories from before then because I almost died the same day too."
The lion nodded seriously. "Your story interests me, but it will have to wait. It is my experience that Seers cannot hold visions such as this for long."
"I'm sorry we haven't been able to save you. Please know we're trying. We haven't forgotten."
"Who are you truly looking for?"
"My sister, Hermione. Hojo kidnapped her almost eight months ago. We came to Shinra to find and save her but we can't get past the restricted areas. My brother and I are just no-ranked grunts. I joined the Turks and that got me closer but I still can't find her." Harry's fists were clenched in anger and he ground his teeth.
"Hojo is a man of pure evil," the lion growled. "If I am ever given the opportunity I will rip his throat out with my own claws." Red's beautiful green eyes met with Harry's. "I have little freedom in this place but I will attempt to find your sister and help you. All I ask in return is for you to try and save me."
"I will!" Harry exclaimed. "I promise; I won't leave you behind!"
The lion nodded, satisfied. "There is a group of people, wizards like yourself, who call themselves The Order of the Phoenix. They are truly good people and can help you."
"Where can I find them?"
"They are scattered everywhere but the people I know live in Cosmo Canyon. In this cell, I am referred to as Red XIII but my true name is Nanaki. Tell them this and they will help you."
"Thank you. I'm Harry Potter, by the way. It's nice to meet you."
Nanaki didn't answer for a moment, stunned into silence by Harry's name. Harry frowned in confusion.
"Are you okay? Is something wrong?"
"You are our Savior," Nanaki whispered. "The Chosen One."
"The chosen what?"
The conversation was cut off abruptly when Harry felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned in confusion and the cell faded away. Harry tried to call out to Nanaki but he was back in the dark forest. The hand kept shaking him and Harry was dragged from the trees and into the light.
Harry's eyes snapped open to see Cloud standing over him, frowning in worry. Harry was asleep in his clothes, lying in their bunk down in the Soldier cadet rooms. He stared up at Cloud, slightly disorientated.
"Are you okay?" Cloud demanded. "You were muttering in your sleep and your eyes glowing brighter than I've ever seen before!"
"Really?" Harry help his hand up and could see the green glow dancing over his fingertips. He frowned. "Do you remember when we were kids and Hermione and I couldn't remember anything?"
Cloud frowned and sat on the bed. "Yeah. The doctors said you had complete amnesia from the trauma of almost freezing to death and whatever happened up in the mountains."
"Right. And after we got better some of the memories came back. Like being a wizard and being able to do magic."
"But nothing personal. You and Hermione couldn't remember how you knew each other or why you were in the mountains."
"Exactly. And every time I remembered a new spell we would laugh and joke about getting another super power." Harry stared seriously at his brother. "Well Cloud, I think I've got a new super power."
Cloud stared for a long moment. "Okay, tell me."
"I just had a vision…"
*!*!*
Harry sat next to Reno, trying hard not to pout. His face was set in a scowl that had Reno glancing at him curiously. Harry glared at him. He knew perfectly well that the redhead picked up on social cues better than anyone but Reno loved to ignore them. Harry's whole body screamed, "don't talk to me," but that just made Reno want to do it more. Luckily, they were in a meeting with Tseng and Rude, so Reno was forced to keep his mouth shut for now.
"I am assigning you a research mission," Tseng was saying. "We are looking for a terrorist group in Kalm."
"Avalanche again?" Rude asked.
"No, these people refer to themselves as Death Eaters."
While Reno rolled his eyes at the name, Harry leaned back in his seat. He couldn't place why, but for some reason he was suddenly terrified. His heart skipped a beat and his palms were sweaty. He had no idea who or what Death Eaters were but the mere mention of the group made him nearly tremble with fear.
"You will be taking Potter with you and showing him how to move and gather information discreetly, as a Turk. I expect you to come back with something useful about this new group and for your trainee to be more experienced."
"Do we know anything already?" Rude asked.
"We know exactly three things. First, they are all believed to wear black robes and white masks, so no one has ever seen their faces. Second, they kill indiscriminately. And third, I believe they are very wealthy as they move about freely and easily."
"Rich, cowards, and murders," Reno repeated. "Got it, yo."
"At the same you are doing this Soldier is sending out a two-man team to Kalm to deter a possible Avalanche meeting."
"You think the two groups are meeting up?"
"I have not ruled out the possibility. As of now, we are clear on Avalanche's intentions but know nothing about the Death Eaters. Leave Avalanche to the Soldiers and find out what you can about this new group."
"Yes sir."
"You got it, boss."
"Potter, pay very close attention on this mission. I will expect you to give me the briefing when you return."
Harry nodded quickly. "Yes sir."
*!*!*
Cloud was frowning as he ran the track during morning drills. He wasn't sure what to make of what Harry had told him last night. Honestly, he wasn't sure his brother hadn't just dreamt the whole thing. Harry had been worrying and thinking about the lion, Nanaki apparently, so much that Cloud was worried he had dreamt all this to make himself feel better. Harry hadn't liked that and now the brothers weren't talking.
But what was Cloud supposed to think? His brother had visions now? Could he see the future? Even for Harry that was pretty farfetched. Then again, his brother was a wizard who carried a wand and cast spells, so maybe Cloud should be more open-minded. Still the thought of visions and seeing the future didn't sit well with Cloud.
The blonde slowed to a stop as the instructor blew his whistle. They had been in the program long enough now that the excessive running no longer had the cadets panting on the ground in exhaustion. They were sweaty and out of breath but no one complained or asked to take a break.
"You have a five-minute break before sword training. Cadet Strife, you're dismissed."
"Thank you, sir!"
Because Cloud trained one-on-one with Zack, he was excused from sword training with the others. He only joined the class when Zack was away on missions. The blonde gathered his things and jogged to the locker rooms, where Zack was already waiting. Surprised, Cloud smiled and hurried up to him.
"What are you doing here?"
"Figured I'd come pick you today," he grinned, ruffling Cloud's spikes. The teen frowned and batted his hands away. "Any chance I get to spend with you, I'm taking it."
He winked playfully and Cloud blushed. With a roll of his eyes, he hurried to change. The two had never spoken about their kiss and it had been over a week since it occurred. Cloud wasn't sure how to handle the situation or Zack's flirting. Normally he would ask Hermione for advice and the realization that he couldn't made his heart clench painfully.
After changing, Zack slung an arm around Cloud's shoulders as they walked to the training room. Cloud relaxed and admitted to himself that he enjoyed the close contact.
"So I'm going on a mission tomorrow."
Cloud looked up. "Really?"
"Yup. It's a super easy one. Actually, it's probably going to be pretty boring. I've been assigned to go to Kalm and 'deter' any terrorist activities."
"Deter?"
"Basically, I just stand around and make sure that everyone knows I'm there. Criminals are less likely to do something if a Soldier is around; especially one as strong as me."
Cloud grinned. "I guess if no one knew you and you didn't talk… you could be kinda intimidating."
"Kind of?" Zack exclaimed. "I'm plenty scary, thank you very much!"
Cloud snorted. "Of course you are."
Zack grabbed him into a headlock and Cloud laughed. "If you would stop being mean to me for one second, I would finish with what I was trying to say."
"Okay, okay, I give!"
Zack let him and took a moment to enjoy Cloud's smile.
"Well?" Cloud prompted.
"What? Oh right! I want you to come with me."
"Really?"
"Yeah, it may be a boring mission, but it's still a mission. It'll give you a feel for how things work. There won't be a lot of action but not all missions are action based. More often than not, you've gotta put up with the boring stuff."
Cloud's eyes lit up. "I don't care if it's boring. I'd be honored to go on a mission with you."
Zack shook his head, charmed by Cloud's genuine response. He looked so excited and Zack found he couldn't stop staring. He knew cadets were off-limits but Cloud made it so tempting. Zack had deliberately been avoiding talking about their kiss because he was afraid of what might come out of his mouth. He had his career to think about, after all.
"Okay, be ready tomorrow by 08:00. I'll meet you in the cafeteria and take you upstairs to fill out the proper paperwork. We'll be out of here by 09:00."
"Thank you!"
Zack ruffled his hair with a large smile. "No problem! Now let's get training."
*!*!*
At exactly 09:00 the next morning, Zack and Cloud arrived at their transport. Reno, Rude, and Harry were already there, loading up the truck with their meager supplies. They didn't plan on staying in Kalm very long and hadn't bothered to bring much other than some helpful surveillance equipment. Harry caught Cloud's eye and the blonde turned away, embarrassed. He rolled his eyes and focused on doing what Reno told him. The brothers had spoken just enough the night before to figure out they were going on the same mission but still hadn't discussed Harry's vision.
"Hey guys!" Zack greeted, smiling as he ran up to the truck. "So you got assigned surveillance?"
"Yup, looking for new criminals to bother, yo," Reno shrugged. "You looking forward to your vacation?"
"It's not a vacation, Reno!" Zack argued. Reno pinned him with a look and Zack sighed. "It's not… but it is going to be boring. Which is why I brought Cloud with me! So I could have someone to help pass the time with!"
Reno snorted. "I'm sure you and the blondy are gonna have loads of fun 'passing the time' all alone together."
Harry "accidently" dropped his bottle of water on Reno's head. The redhead whipped around and scowled at the teen who stared blankly back. Rude walked past, picking up the water.
"Manners children," he drawled.
"He started it!" they exclaimed together. Zack couldn't help himself and laughed.
They climbed into the back of the unmarked van and settled into the uncomfortable seats. Even though Shinra had official vehicles that were much larger and more comfortable than the smelly van they currently occupied, the Turks preferred to travel a little more stealthily.
The car ride took about three hours and talking was scarce. The driver was an infantryman who put on head phones (the van radio was broken) and ignored them. Zack was glancing between Cloud, who sat next to him, and Harry, who was tucked away in the back corner by Reno. Cloud hunched his shoulders slightly, knowing Zack was about to get nosey. He always had the same curious, innocent look on his face when he was about to butt into someone else's business.
"So… what's wrong with you two?"
And there it was. Cloud scowled out the window while Harry glared.
"Mind your own business," Harry snapped.
"Don't be ass," Cloud grumbled.
"Shut up."
"You shut up."
They glared at one another before turning away with a huff. Zack blinked while Reno frowned.
"That was the lamest fight I've ever seen, yo," he complained.
"Go to hell!" Cloud and Harry snapped together. They looked at each other in surprise before glaring and turning away.
"Seriously? Even when you're fighting you're in perfect sync?" Reno clucked his tongue in disgust.
"I think it's cute!" Zack piped up. "They really do care about each other."
Harry rolled his eyes while Cloud shook his head.
They didn't speak again until they reached Kalm. The town was small and near the water. It was mostly farm lands built around a lazy town. The three Turks stopped outside the borders and grabbed their equipment while the van took Zack and Cloud right to the Inn. Zack booked two rooms, loudly declaring he was a Soldier and openly flaunting his Shinra uniform and badge. He flirted with all the girls, winking and smooth talking until they dissolved into red faces and giggles. After making sure gossip about him was going to spread, Zack called for Cloud to follow them up to the rooms.
"So we'll take this one and the Turks can have the other room," Zack said. "We'll wander around town with our swords so everyone knows we're here."
"I think the Inn keeper's daughters will take care of that for you," Cloud pointed out, unable to fully hide his jealously.
Zack laughed, embarrassed. "Flirting with them is easy because they don't mean anything to me. Whenever I try and flirt with someone I actually care about, boy do I make an ass outta things." Zack threw his overnight bag on the bed and Cloud followed suit. They left the Inn, smiling at the desk girls and even going as far as to wink at the bell boy.
"So why are you and Harry fighting?" Zack asked once they were outside. Cloud scowled.
"It's stupid."
"Doesn't seem stupid. He piss you off or something?"
Cloud shook his head. Suddenly his eye caught movement and he turned. Harry was standing alone, setting up a camera in an alley. No one noticed him and only years of practice drew Cloud's eyes to the slight distortion of magic. Harry frowned as he sensed eyes on him and turned. He spotted Cloud and rolled his eyes before vanishing back down the alley, the camera securely in place.
"Cloud?"
"No," Cloud answered. "He didn't piss me off. I think I hurt his feelings."
Zack eyed him closely. "You're really in tune with each other, you know?" He leaned forward, a goofy grin on his face. "It's a good thing you two are brothers or I'd be super jealous." Without warning, Zack pecked Cloud's nose, making the teen stumble back in surprise. Cloud turned red as Zack laughed and slung an arm around him.
"Let's go shopping…"
Cloud nodded, smiling slightly to himself.
*!*!*
After being dropped off by the van, Harry followed Rude and Reno into the town. They snuck through a farmer's field that was overgrown with corn stalks. Rude gestured them behind the local inn.
"Zack will get us a room," he explained. "So no one should ever know we were here. We will put up cameras covering all entrances to the Inn, local bar, and public bath. We are not to be seen, heard, or noticed while doing this. Do not interact with the locals."
Harry knew Rude was saying all this for his benefit and nodded. He took three cameras from Reno and they split up. Harry was in charge of setting up the devices in front of the inn. He hadn't planned on using magic to hide himself but Harry was in a foul mood didn't feel like working hard. He tapped his wand to his head and shivered at the cool feeling that traveled down his spine. No one would notice him now and Harry walked confidently.
He was halfway done when he felt eyes on him. Confused, Harry turned and locked eyes with his brother. Cloud was surprised before turning away. Harry growled to himself. What the hell was Cloud's problem? He used to love discovering new powers with Harry. It was Cloud's genuine reactions to his magic that made Harry proud to be a wizard. In a world where he was forced to hide, the only reason Harry didn't resent his magic was because his brother and sister loved it so much.
Harry glanced back at the street just in time to see Zack playfully kiss Cloud's nose. The teen blew an angry breath out through his mouth. He wasn't sure how he felt about Zack Fair but Harry was certain he wasn't going let his brother get his heartbroken. And with Zack's reputation, that seemed far too likely.
In an even worse mood than when he started, Harry hurried to find Reno and finish setting up.
*!*!*
That night the Inn was fully booked so the small dining area was packed with people when Cloud wandered downstairs. Zack was still being nosey and the Turks were busy monitoring their cameras. They had sent Harry downstairs to watch the crowds so Cloud hadn't had a chance to talk to him.
The blonde glanced around the busy dining room and noticed there weren't any empty tables. With a sigh, he turned to leave but stopped as something in the corner caught his eye. A table in the back was being overlooked by patrons and workers. Sitting and playing with his drink was Harry. His brother didn't look like he was paying much attention to the crowds like he was supposed to. Deciding it was time to talk, Cloud wandered over.
"Can I sit?"
Harry barely glanced at him and Cloud took that as a yes. They were quiet and Cloud was disappointed that no one would come over and offer him a drink.
"I'm not a liar," Harry finally spoke.
"I never said you were."
"You don't believe me about the vision. About Nanaki."
"Idiot," Cloud grumbled. "Of course I believe you! That's what I'm freaking out about!"
"What?"
"Look around us, Harry! No one knows we're here right now. No one even knows this table is here right now. You cast a spell that made us almost completely invisible."
"So?"
"So… it's a super power. You have super powers. You've had them your whole life and new ones just show up randomly as you get older."
"You've never had a problem with my magic before," Harry pointed out defensively. "You used to think it was cool."
Cloud sighed and took Harry's cup. What was once hot chocolate was now chocolate milk.
"I always freaked out, every time you remembered another spell or figured out a new trick. I panicked each time."
Harry stared at him in disbelief.
"At first I went to Mama, but she didn't know what to do any more than me. She just told me, it doesn't matter, whatever he can do, we still love him. So that's what I did. I smiled and acted happy for your sake."
"So you've been lying our whole lives? Cloud, are you afraid of me?"
The horror on Harry's face stabbed at Cloud's heart. "I'm afraid for you." Cloud stared at his brother seriously. "You're different, Harry. And I'm not saying that's bad but it is true. I will always be there for you and I will always be proud to call you my brother but I worry. Someone found out that Hermione has a brain that works better than anyone else's in the world and they kidnapped her. What will happen the day someone finds out you're stronger than everyone else in the world? Are they going to kidnap you too? Or are they just going to kill you? How am I supposed to protect you?"
Cloud's wide eyes and fast talking surprised Harry. He stared at his brother for a moment before finding his voice. "I'm not the strongest person in the world."
"Yes, you are." Cloud turned to him, completely serious. "Hermione can do magic too, but nowhere near your level. She can take your wand and cast a few spells but she can't make us invisible in a crowd like this. She can't disappear into thin air and reappear a second later."
"I've only done that a couple of times when we were in real trouble."
"My point is, you are stronger than anyone we know. If you went all out, fought with all your magic and didn't hold back… you could probably beat First Class Soldiers."
"Even General Sephiroth?"
Cloud paused. "Let's not get carried away…"
Harry smiled before becoming serious again. "It freaks me out too, you know. Thinking about what would happen if anyone ever found out what I am."
Cloud nodded. "And now you have visions."
"And now I have visions."
They fell silent for a moment, absorbed in their thoughts.
"I believe you. I'm just really, really, worried." Cloud stared down at his hands. "I can't save Hermione without you. I want to help that lion, Nanaki, but if we can't even save her, how are we supposed to save him too?"
"Hermione will always be top priority," Harry assured. "But if we can save other kidnapped victims, shouldn't we at least try?"
They finished Harry's cold drink and stood. The charm around them slipped away and a few people did double-takes, surprised to see the brother's standing there. They all shrugged and went back to their conversations without a second thought. Harry lead the way upstairs back to their rooms.
"I'm sorry for making you mad," Cloud muttered. "Usually when you get a new power, I talk to Hermione and she helps me work through my worry."
Harry slung an arm around his shoulder, a gesture Cloud returned. "No problem, little bro. I totally understand that you're a big baby."
Cloud grabbed Harry into a headlock and the two playfully wrestled as they stumbled into Harry's room, laughing.
"Awe look that!" Zack called out. "They made up! Great!"
Harry managed to push Cloud away and glared mildly at Reno. "What are you doing, letting a Soldier in here? Didn't you declare this an idiot free zone?"
"Obviously not since he let you in here," Cloud piped up. Harry kicked him.
"As disgustingly sweet as you two making up is, we have work to do, yo" Reno drawled.
"Fair's going to monitor the equipment we set up earlier while we go out and work the streets," Rude explained.
"Over here Cloud," Zack beckoned. "I'll show how to use everything."
Cloud moved to his side while Rude and Reno joined Harry at the door. Reno peered at him strangely and Harry leaned back.
"What?"
"Are your eyes… glowing?"
Harry panicked and tried to keep a straight face. His eyes always glowed while he used his magic and for a few minutes afterwards. He had kept the disillusionment charm up for a long time downstairs so they were definitely noticeable in the dimly lit room.
"I don't know—"
Harry never got a chance to finish his sentence as an explosion rang in the air around them.
A/N: Sorry about the cliffhanger. I promise not to make you wait another ten months for the next chapter. Thanks to everyone who favorited/followed. And super thanks to everyone who reviewed! See you next chapter!
