Time has passed since I became the holiday figure known as Cupid. It's a lot of work spreading love across the globe but I am thankful that I have a lot of helpers.
When I started out in this role as the Spirit of Love and Compassion it was a bit chaotic, nothing had gone right for me that day. I had made a mess with the love powder and it had gotten everywhere! It took a while before all the love-inducing powder was cleaned up.
Then there was the time where I made the wrong couple fall in love but thankfully there wasn't enough powder where the love was permanent.
Over time my role as Cupid became better and it felt great! Showering love to people made compassion which made the world happy. Just for one day, the world was in makes my heart flutter just thinking about it!
Valentine's Day of nineteen forty-five was a doozy! World War II had ended earlier that year and it was overwhelming! So many couples in several countries matched up was not an easy task.
That was the year I took a break being in the field and instead I assigned couples to my little helpers with the Book of Love. It holds every match for each couple matched; the past, present, and future. The Book of Love tells me where the couples are and when they needed to be matched, without it, there would be no love.
At that time I never interacted with the other spirits, it was kind of lonesome. Sure I had my helpers but it didn't feel the same. I've always heard about that them but never saw them.
It wasn't until nineteen fifty-six did I had my first encounter with another spirit. Well...more like spirits actually. A spirit called Nicholas St. North had invited me up to the North Pole for a social visit.
I was eager to visit another spirit! I summoned my power inside myself and a giant orb whisked me away to the spirit's workshop.
All the guardians came to North's workshop as they were meeting the mysterious Spirit of Love. Man in Moon left a message about a new guardian and that was Cupid. A new guardian excited the spirits! Most of them anyway.
The Easter Bunny doesn't understand why there needed to be another guardian but MiM didn't give an answer of course.
"Finally!" Tooth said with a giddy. "I can hardly contain myself!" One of Tooth's fairies squeaked in the Guardian of Memory's ear. "Lila Dupree! Treephort, Louisiana! Skateboard accident!"
Bunnymund rolled his eyes. "We're good enough without Cupid!"
Father Christmas laughed and patted the Easter Bunny shoulder roughly. "Jealous, aren't we?" The Spirit of Hope rolled his eyes and scoffed at his friend.
A yeti came in the room and murmured something in the burly man's ear, a smile crept up his face. "Bring her in!"
The yet left the room and came back guiding the Spirit of Love into the room. The other spirits couldn't help but notice that Cupid was blind!
"This is the spirit that Manny wants to become a guardian?" Bunny whispered at the Tooth. The Guardian of Memories shushed the boomerang-wielding rabbit.
The blind spirit smiled and thanked the yeti and sent the creature on his way back to the workshop. North walked up to the smaller spirit and grabbed her hand and shook it.
"Welcome to the North Pole!" He said with a kind-hearted smile. The Spirit of Love smiled.
"Thanks for inviting me I don't get to go out much." She said with a sheepish smile.
Bunny didn't take his eyes off the blind spirit and he narrowed his eyes at Cupid. This had to be some sort of joke. She couldn't see, how was she to protect children. His thoughts were interrupted when the said spirit spoke up. "Are you just gonna stand there and stare at me or come over and introduce yourself?"
The rabbit's ears perked up a bit and his eyes widened as all eyes were on him. Bunny fumbled over his words taken surprised by the cupid.
Before he knew the spirit was in front of him and she stuck her hand out for him to shake.
"Valentina Heartman, nice to meet you." She smiled kindly at the Guardian of Hope. The shorter spirit nodded at the Guardian of Hope.
After everyone was settled all the spirits got the chance for cookies from the elves and hot chocolate from the yetis.
North spoke up as he got a cookie from a tray the two elves were carrying. "Valentina, I'm sure you're wondering why I invited you here."
"A little. The past hundred and a half years I haven't been invited by any other spirits." She said before taking a sip of her hot cocoa.
"It's because Man in Moon wants you to become a guardian." He said being straightforward.
The redhead choked on her hot beverage mid sip. A moment of composing herself she set down her drink in her lap. "Excuse me?"
"Man in Moon wants you to be a guardian." The Tooth Fairy said in a gentle tone.
The cupid cleared her throat. "Um, what's a guardian?" She asked.
"A guardian is someone who protects children," Bunnymund explained.
"Ok, but why does the Man in Moon want me to be a guardian?" Valentina asked.
"We don't know. He doesn't really specify with reasons but we have kept track of your progress." North said answering the young spirit's question.
"Oh?" The blind spirit said quirking her brow.
"Yes, and I admired your work a few years back," Toothiana said with giddy.
The love spirit chuckled. "Yeah, that was some year." Father Christmas stood up from where he was sitting and approached Valentina.
"Man in Moon must see that as potential and that's why he chose you to be a guardian."
"Maybe but before I agree what do I need to know about being a guardian?"
"Well", Toothiana starting off steady. "If too many children stop believing you, you disappear."
The red headed spirit pursed her lips. "I see uh I think I need a moment to think about this."
"We understand," North said putting a gentle hand on her shoulder. "Take your time." He motioned for the rest of the spirits to exit the room.
One by one each of them exited the room but the Australian rabbit stopped in front of her. "Just so you know, being a guardian is fulfilling and worth every minute of it." He said in a smooth voice.
"I'll keep that mind." She said with a smile. The Easter Bunny then exited the room, leaving Valentina with her thoughts.
Some time has passed and the guardians waited outside, seeing if they could hear anything inside the room. The spirit of love has been in there thinking quietly to herself whether she wants to be a guardian or not. Each of the guardians was debating if they should go in the room or continue to stay outside of the room.
Before any of them could think of an answer, they heard Valentina's voice yell from inside the room. "I've made a decision!"
The guardians rushed into the room and surrounded the love spirit and eagerly awaited her answer. The blind redhead had a smile on her face and spoke, "I will be a guardian."
North cheered at Valentina's response. "Yes! Music!" Father Christmas yelled and the elves with instruments and played a cheerful tune. The yetis had torches and swung them with grace. The elves and yeti are surrounded the blind spirit and it gave her butterflies in her hearing the celebration around her. Tooth's fairies flew to the love spirit with a flower crown made from cherry blossoms and roses and laid on top of the spirit's head.
A yeti handed North a book and licked his thumb and settled on a page.
"Do you, Valentina Heartman, vow to watch over the children?" The Spirit of Wonder started. "Guard them with your life, their hopes, their wishes, and their dreams? For they are all we have, all that we are, and all that we ever be." The spirit of love took a deep breath and nodded. "Yes." North smiled down at the new guardian. "Congratulations," He said. "You are now a guardian."
The tooth fairy squealed in excitement and hugged the new guardian. "Finally! Another girl in the group!" The blind redhead laughed and hugged the hummingbird spirit back. One of Tooth's fairies squeaked in the spirit's ear. Toothiana flew away from the new guardian and barked orders to her fairies about the new tooth."Welcome to the club, sheila," Bunnymund said patting the new guardian on the shoulder. Valentina smiled at the Guardian of Hope and patted his furry hand. "Thanks, Bunny."
Sandman made some figures above his head signaling Bunny that he wanted to welcome the guardian as well. Bunny nodded at the gold man and turned back to the blind guardian. "Sandy wants you to know he that he welcomes you as a guardian."
"Thanks, Sandy," Valentina said. "I really appreciate the welcome." The new guardian's eyes widened. "Wait what time is it?" She asked the Easter Bunny.
The rabbit looked up at the clock above the fire mantle to look at the time and looked back down at the shorter spirit. "Two-thirty." He answered.
Valentina gasped. "Oh shoot! I need to get back to my helpers!" She exclaimed.
"No worries. I can take you back home." North offered the new guardian.
"Thank you but my way is faster," Valentina said. The blind head raised her arms and summoned the power within her. She thought about home and a giant pink orb consumed the love spirit. The next the guardians knew Valentina was gone.
In the shadows, the Boogey Man growled in anger as he watched what had happened in his eyes. 'She's a guardian now?', He thought. 'She's mine!' Pitch has watched her from the beginning ever since he made her into a spirit and has observed her from afar. She was his inspiration for being stronger, after the fight he and Sandman had all those years ago he was determined to manipulate dreams. He had found out by taking his frustration out on one of Sandy's dreams to a child that he found that he had mildly tainted it.
In the skies, Valentina was enjoying her time of peace and quiet on her way back home. The fresh air calmed her nerves and relaxed her mind, even as her orb shielded her from the winds. Suddenly she lost her concentration of going home when something collided with her pink bubble and caused it to burst.
The love guardian was free falling and tried of thinking of home but her mind was too clustered with the fear of falling. Her heart raced and she began to scream out of fear until she felt a pair of arms wrap around her and stopped her fall. Valentina realized she was floating again and took a deep breath to calm herself.
"Thanks." Valentina breathed thanking her savior.
"No problem," The voice replied. "Let's get you on the ground." The stranger flew down onto the solid ground and carefully put the blind spirit back on her feet.
"Thanks again," The redhead said with gratitude. "I thought I was a goner there."
"Well I was the one that caused your fall," Valentina's mysterious savior admitted sheepishly. "It was the least I could do."
"Might I ask what my perpetrator and savior's name is?"
The mysterious spirit smiled at the blind spirit. "My name is Jack Frost."
