Chapter 8: Hospital Visit
When Rae awoke several hours later, Bruce was there sitting beside her. His head was lying on the side of her bed and his hand was loosely holding hers. She smiled a little as she watched him sleep, glad to finally see him again, before remembering why she had been asleep. She had fainted earlier…
Oh my god, she was pregnant! Rae's hand immediately went to her stomach, rubbing the toned skin. Tears filled her eyes and slid down her cheeks. She was pregnant with that monster's baby!
"Rae?"
She turned to see Bruce's concerned eyes on her, watching her every movement, the concern so evident in his eyes. She knew in that moment he knew of her condition; she could tell by the way he looked at her hand on her stomach for just the briefest moment before his eyes went back to her.
"I don't know what to do," she whispered after staring at him for several moments, breaking eye contact as she spoke.
She felt so ashamed. Of the condition she was in, in what had happened to her, what she had allowed to happen to her. How could she ever look at him the same? What did he think of her? She felt him squeeze her hand briefly before she felt his other hand touch her cheek ever so softly and nudge her face up so that he could lock eyes with her.
"None of this is your fault, do not blame yourself," he said quietly, able to read her expression so well. "If anyone is to blame, it is myself. No, don't try to argue with me," he said as she opened her mouth to do just that. "You're my little sister and though you may be mature for your age, you are still a minor and under my care. This never should have happened to you."
"If I hadn't skipped school and been at that damn bank, this wouldn't of happened Bruce. If I had just been doing what I was supposed to be doing, I wouldn't be in this situation."
They stared at each other for several moments, neither one wanting to back down on who to place the blame on, both too stubborn for their own good. Finally, Bruce just shook his head, breaking eye contact and once again locking eyes on her hand, that was still held against her stomach.
"Do you want to keep it?" He asked softly. "I will support you in your decision. I don't want you to think you are trapped, one way or another."
Rae glanced down, thinking for several moments. After a while, she slowly reached her hand out and grasped her brother's larger one in hers.
"I want to keep it," she whispered, her eyes starting to tear up. "It's my baby, I can't just get rid of it, even with who the father is."
Joker walked into his old bedroom and looked around. His eyes narrowed in anger, for there were clear signs of a struggle present. The purple lamp that had been on his nightstand had been knocked aside and laid in a heap of glass on the floor. He walked towards his bed and noticed blood, recent blood, on his sheets. He growled with frustration, ripping the bedding from the mattress to a crumpled pile on the floor.
"Bozo!" He called, pulling out his pill bottle from his jacket.
He popped the lid and swallowed down two pills as one of his clowns came in
"Yes, sir."
"Have you found him?" Joker questioned, his eyes staying on the bed as he thought of what he would do to the boy.
He had had a pretty good idea to whom could have hurt his woman, as he had only really left one man here to watch over her. He was stupid to trust that to someone else, but he hadn't really thought anyone would be dumb enough to go behind his back.
"No sir, but we have a few ideas as to where he could be. He was pretty easy to read, only had few favorite places he liked to go on his free time. We should have him by the end of the day if I can get some guys out to look."
"Very well, round up a couple guys to look for him, you have my permission, you are in charge of finding him. I want him taken alive. Also have a few of the guys and tell them that we are moving to the large house," Joker stated, knowing that they would know where he was talking about.
"And the woman?"
Joker turned to his firsthand man, a large smirk on his face.
"Take her there as well."
Bruce had held his sister in his arms for what felt like hours, he really wasn't sure how long they had sat there, both of them crying. He had stopped quite some time ago and she was starting to quiet down as well. He hated to bring up so many things and keep her in such an emotional state, but there were so many things they needed to go over and talk about, so many things he was dreading to hear and dreading to tell her.
"I saw what he did to you, the mark he put on you," he whispered, drawing back from their embrace to stare intently at her.
"I never knew that he sent the tape," she whispered, staring down at her hands as she clenched them into tight fists. "He never mentioned it after filming, so I had forgotten about it."
"Tape? What tape?" Bruce asked in confusion and in growing horror.
He received a tape from the Joker once, he remembered the horror and the fear he felt for his sister when he saw what that man was doing to her. He can't imagine what else she must of suffered and to know that he could have done something else as horrible as that first tape he had received from him.
"The, the second tape he made-."
"He made another tape?" Bruce asked, his voice rising in volume when she confirmed his fears.
Rae nodded, clenching at Bruce's hand.
"Yes, he made another one, that night of the party. It was to punish me," she whispered, tears gathering in her eyes. "To show you all the sick things he did to me…"
"Jesus Christ," he whispered in horror, staring down at her.
"If, if he didn't show you the tape, how did you know about the mark?"
"It was in your file. They took pictures to document it and to use against him when it goes to court."
Rae nodded. They stayed silent for several minutes before Bruce broke the silence.
"I know that this is a tough time for you, but I wanted you to hear this from me and no one else before it got out."
"I already know he escaped, Bruce," she whispered when she saw his hesitation.
"That's not what I was planning to say. Rae," Bruce paused, releasing a heavy sigh. "The Joker kidnapped Harvey and Rachel last night-."
"Are they alright?" She asked as she interrupted, instantly sitting up straight to watch her brother's expressions.
"Harvey suffered some pretty bad burns to the face; he's in the next room."
"And Rachel?"
Rae held her breath, tears gathering in her eyes again as her brother hesitated.
"Rachel died in an explosion," Bruce answered softly, watching as his sister's face crumbled in agony.
Several hours later…
Rae sat staring out the hospital window, her eyes watching the street below lazily. She had been cooped up for so long in that warehouse, that she forgot what it felt like to be out. It was noisy and cluttered and she loved it. She had missed this so much. She had always been alone, except for the Joker; she had no one to talk to. It wasn't like she could talk to the Joker.
Rae sighed, looking away from the window and putting a hand to her abdomen. She had a child growing within her, a very small being that hasn't even started pumping its heart yet. What would the Joker do if he ever found out she was having his child? What did she mean, if he ever found out? It's the Joker! He always knows everything. Oh god, what was she going to do?
Rae bowed her head, staring down at her hands as tears gathered in her eyes. She snapped her head up as she heard yelling coming from the next room. Rae slowly eased out of the bed, wincing as she started to walk towards her hospital door. It hurt for her to walk; all of a sudden her body had decided to let her feel the soreness. She timidly opened the door a crack, peering out as a nurse ran out of the room beside her, closing the door quickly. The nurse sighed in relief before turning away to a fellow nurse behind her.
"He is getting more and more violent."
"Can you blame him? I mean look at his face…" The nurse said, walking away with her partner at her side.
She glanced down the hallways, making sure it was all clear before she slipped out of her room. She walked to the room beside hers, looking through the door. Harvey… Rae quietly opened the door, stepping over the broken glass as she closed the door behind her. She walked forward, Harvey not noticing her because his face was turned away from her.
"Harvey?" She whispered, gently touching his hand.
He jerked, his face snapping towards her and his eyes glaring.
"Oh Harvey," she whispered, her eyes widened in horror at his burnt face. "I'm so sorry."
"Rae," he rasped, his blue eyes softening when he saw her. "You got away from him."
She nodded, taking a seat beside him on the chair.
"Yes, I've been here since yesterday afternoon," she whispered, taking one of his handcuffed hands in her hand. "Why do they have you like this?"
"So I won't hurt myself," he growled in anger, turning away from her. "You can stay in here if you want," he whispered as she turned to go.
Rae looked at him, giving him a small smile as she sat back down and laid her head down at his side. Harvey smirked, placing his hand down on top of her head as she closed her eyes.
He walked down the halls, two of his men behind him, and was amused as no one attempted to stop a red haired nurse with a facial mask around 'her' head and two burly looking guys walking behind 'her'. They must be in a panic getting everyone out he thought, stifling a giggle before it erupted from his mouth. He stopped before the door he was looking for, pushing it slowly in.
He was annoyed to not find her in the room. They couldn't have moved her already, it was much too soon for them to be evacuating this part of the building. He walked to the hospital bed and picked up her hospital chart, tossing the face mask from his face as he did so. He flipped the file open, scanning through most of it, skipping the unneeded tests and to the rape kit report.
So, the Commissioner hadn't lied, there was someone else who raped her. His eyes blazed as he returned to the list of injuries, noting things that he had not done himself. Handcuff marks, he hadn't put those on her in weeks. He went on reading the report, on how the doctor stated that her wrists received bloody cuts from possible tightness of the restraints and from possible struggle.
There were also reports of bruises on her thighs and forearms, injuries that were also not caused by him. He was no longer that rough with her to leave marks on her thighs and he only held her down by the wrists now, so the marks on her arms were not his either. When he got a hold of that boy, he would wish that he had never been born. He went on noticing the note that indicated that she was dehydrated, that explains that fainting spell.
He got bored with reading the doctor's suggestions on injuries and her mental health, so he put the file back down, motioning to the two goon's behind him to be quiet as he walked into the room next door. He was pleasantly surprised to find her in the room with Dent, sitting next to him on a chair with her head beside his lap and both of them sleeping.
He stepped forward, staring down at Rae as she shifted in her sleep. She felt him watching her, so use to it that she now knew. The force of his gaze woke her as she slowly opened her blue eyes. She gasped and jerked up, her movement waking Harvey.
"Joker," he growled, thrashing against the restraints holding him down.
"Dent," he acknowledged, his gaze never leaving Rae.
"What did you do to her?" Harvey shouted as Rae started to tremble, glaring at the man responsible for Rachel's death.
Joker shrugged, motioning to his men to remove Rae from Dent's side.
"A little bit of this, a little bit of that. Have you seen her mark?" He suddenly asked, his face splitting into a grin as his men grabbed Rae.
"Let go of her! Leave her alone!" Dent yelled, struggling against the handcuffs as the Joker moved to stand before the woman that was like a sister to him and starting to unbutton her shirt.
"Don't move," Joker warned her as she started to struggle, using his voice that demanded her to obey.
Rae cried weakly in the arms of the two goons as Joker moved aside her shirt before allowing Harvey to view her.
"Beautiful, isn't it?" Joker said, his hand lightly grazing the raised scar of his initial on her breast as Dent stared in anger at it. "This is what happened the last time she escaped me. I broke her in then, she was too afraid to leave me after that night, until yesterday."
"No, please. I didn't want to leave," Rae tried convincing him, her eyes widening in fear as she thought of what he might do next. "I tried to tell him you'd be mad-."
"Not now, sweetheart," Joker cooed, lightly smacking her cheek to leave a small pink mark. "We will discuss that later."
He turned to Dent, smacking his lips as he stared at the District Attorney.
"Wow, did a number on your face, huh?" He said with a mock grimace, sitting down in the chair that was now vacant.
"You killed Rachel," he rasped, his eyes glaring at the Joker.
"No, no. I was sitting in a cell while you and the Dawes woman were being abducted. How could I have done anything?" Joker questioned, placing a hand to his chest.
"Your men, your plan."
"Do I look like a man that's got a plan?" He said, corking an eyebrow up. "I don't have plans. The mob has plans, the cops have plans. I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it! I just do things," Joker said, turning to look at Rae.
"She wasn't planned. She just happened to be there and I liked her, so I took her. See? No plan. Now, you need to find who is responsible for your situation," he said, motioning towards Dent's face. "And you need to take them out-."
"Don't Harvey-."
"I'm speaking here, sweetheart," Joker said, his gaze turning to hers to glare before turning back to Dent. "Now, here are your keys," he said, tossing the handcuff keys onto Dent's lap while he grabbed Rae's forearm. "We will leave you here-."
"Leave her," Dent demanded, scrambling to pick up the keys.
Joker looked down at Rae before he pulled her to him in a demanding kiss. She struggled against him, pushing against his chest as he attacked her mouth before pulling away.
"No," he said, still staring down at her with his dark eyes. "I don't think I will, Dent. She makes things fun. See ya around!" He shouted gleefully as he dragged her out of the room, giggling as Dent cursed and screamed behind him.
He dragged her down the halls, exiting the hospital before he waited a couple minutes and pulled the detonator from his pocket and pushing the button. He ignored Rae's screams as the hospital blew behind them, tossing her over his shoulder as he strode to the unmarked white van several feet in front of him.
His men slid open the van door, climbing in before him. Joker swung up into the vehicle, settling Rae on top of his lap as he sat down. He turned her towards him, cradling her jaw in his hands as his eyes scanned her face.
"You have some explaining to do when we get home," he growled after accessing her for injuries.
She nodded, tears streaming down her cheeks before he crushed his mouth against hers, pushing his tongue between her lips. He pushed her body up against him, making her straddle his waist before he turned away, having to take in some air as he buried his head into her black hair.
"It's good to have you back…"
