Chapter 4: Start Waving

"WHAT. THE. FUCK!?" Naruto screamed angrily as he stared at the man who came in, then stalked out shoving the man out of the way his golems trailing after him. The sheer audacity of a perspective gennin shouting and doing that made him slow on the uptake.

The jonin shook his head and said, "Meet me on the roof, I have to track down your errant teammate."

The former ANBU walked calmly out of the building, only to discover that his missing perspective student was nowhere to be seen. Asking some pedestrians he found that the boy was heading towards the Hokage tower at a reasonably fast pace. Taking off after the boy he arrived in time to see him be admitted into the Hokage's office... then the yelling began.

"WHAT THE HELL OLD MAN? WHY DID YOU PUT ME UNDER SOMEONE WHOM ALREADY TRIED TO KILL ME? OR ARE YOU HOPEING HE WOULD?" Naruto yelled loud enough to be heard straight through the door in perfect clarity. The Hokage's secretary, and the jonin didn't envy the old man who was getting it point blank. Thirty minutes later an angry young man walked out of the office, and noticing who was there said, "The Hokage wants you" to the older ninja. He then took a seat and taking out a small screwdriver started poking at a damaged golem core that looked like a large blue crystal.

Inside the Hokage's office:

Kakashi was trembling at the pissed expression on the old man's face. And his fear got worse when the old man spoke, "Kakashi, do you remember when I asked if you had any problems that would complicate you being Naruto's sensei?" at the younger man's nod the old man continued, "Why didn't you tell me that you had tried to kill him? Naruto recognized your hair, and described your original technique well enough to have seen it first hand."

Kakashi gulped as he answered, "Well, I didn't think it was important."

"Not impotent, er importent enough, or did you just not want to be punished for trying to kill someone I care about?" The old man ground out. At seeing the man try to open his mouth the old man continued, "Shut up. The only reason your not in prison is your record, and the fact that the council would bitch and moan if I locked you up before Sasuke gets trained in his eyes, if he even awakens them. Now I have to rework all the teams. One of the rules that the First Hokage made was that a shinobi can't be put on a team, that has a reasonable chance of a teammate stabbing said shinobi in the back. Dismiss your genin, and be back here at nine am. If you are late I'll fine you into poverty, get me?"

The man nodded and promised himself that he's be there early, and departed the office by the window.

Sarutobi sighed and called for his secretary to send in Naruto for a few minutes, it has been a long day and he just wanted to inform him of the decision.

The next day, the jonin for the youngest four teams, as all but one of this years teams had already been tested, were assembled in the Hokage's office, waiting for the old man to speak.

"I have a problem, one of my jonin lied to me, and I need to move a genin off his team," the old man stated. He then looked at Gai and said, "I didn't mean for you to be here Gai, since your team is a year old and established."

Gai nodded solemnly and spoke, "Tell me, is the genin you need transferred Naruto?" at the old man's nod, he continued, "I'm willing to trade Neji for Naruto."

His comment caused a stir, why would he want to trade in a rookie of the year, with a years experience, for a green dead last.

"Explain." Sarurtobi demanded.

"I can teach absolutely nothing to Neji due to his clan rules, but at the same time I'm also the one with the most to offer Naruto. He can also fill the mid range slot on my team, balancing it out, and finally you and I both know, he would've been near the top of the class if he didn't pass by exception due to his unique skills," the spandex clad man said.

"Anybody else wish to put in a reason to trade? No? Any objections?"

"I have one," Kakashi said. "I had requested him."

"Objection overruled due to you trying to kill him when he was younger, your new team is Neji, Sasuke, and Sakura. Gai, Rock Lee, Naruto, and TenTen will be yours. Dismissed."

Later that day saw Naruto being introduced to his new team, they were professional enough to accept the decision, but resentful of the loss of his chief rival for Rock, and crush for TenTen.

That partially changed after the first month of group training and sparring sessions, where Naruto earned their respect through sheer skill and variety of techniques. Then came the bane of genin, the D-ranks, and Naruto, whom did his fair share, didn't get paid for more than one in ten of them. This wasn't because of the team, it was because the clients reported that he didn't do anything. The only mission he got reliably paid for was catching the fire Dynamo's cat.

Naruto abandoned his apartment in the village and moved to his real home, simply because he couldn't afford his rent. The Hokage had to accept it for that very reason.

Then came the day when they went to the Hokage's office for a mission and found him reading a letter that had been delivered by a dog. He looked up at the team that entered and said, "Gai, I need you to head out towards wave with your team, Kakashi's team is involved in a C-rank turned A-rank. You will be their support, but if you feel that Kakashi isn't up to leading it, by giving illegal orders, attacking a genin, or favoritism, take over as mission lead. In any event only you can give orders to Naruto. Let me write up the orders so that they can't argue, then get going."

After receiving the orders, the team headed out as fast as possible. They arrived at a lake, with the spandex clothed jonin carrying Naruto across the river and Rock Lee swimming it. They arrived at team sevens location just as Kakashi got trapped in a sphere of water by a Large man, with a large sword, black spiky hair, bandages hiding lower part of his face, camo pants, and no shirt or eyebrows.

"DYNAMIC ENTRY!" Gai yelled as he jumped high in the air and came down with a drop kick on the shirtless missing nin that was holding Kakashi hostage.

The man blocked with his sword, but the force was enough to overcome the water walking technique, and send him strait underwater, removing his arm from the prison that held the other jonin. When the man reemerged he noticed that he was now outnumbered by jonin two to one. His back was to the genin but he considered them a waste of space, until a call of "WIND SLASH!" disrupted his concentration.

The technique performed at the extreme range of it's usage, and beyond the true effective range, at nearly ninety feet, it only was able to give a minor wound to the missing nin. But it did distract him enough for Gai to close the distance and begin pummeling him. A final kick sent the man into a massive water jitsu that Kakashi created, that washed him into a tree. He was finished off when two senbon hit his neck, apparently finish him off. Naruto frowned, he didn't know much about those weapons, but they didn't seem enough to kill with a neck shot.

The young enchanter approached the body, a throwing knife in his hand to make sure of the death of the ninja, when a girlish form in a mask dropped down.

"Thank you for weakening him. I have been tracking him for a while. I'll make sure the Mizukage sends your teams a split of the bounty," the figure said as she gathered up the body.

Seeing the actions, Naruto realized what the problem was. Standard procedure in all villages, according to the lectures and reading material, was to take the head and dispose of the body... on the spot. He then threw the knife in his hand at the figure, who's eyes widened behind his/her mask, and then jumped out of the way as well as it could with a much larger man on it's shoulder, the mask the newly revealed girls face falling off as she did so. A second knife embedded itself into her shoulder before she managed to drop a smoke pellet and make her escape.

"Why did you attack her baka?" the pink haired genin screeched. The other gennin nodded with the spandex clad one talking about the unyouthfulness of the action.

The two jonin came back in time to hear the screech, and Gai said, "I would like to know that myself, attacking a hunter nin..."

"Fake," the blond interrupted. "She was a fake. Senbon to the neck," at this the weapon mistresses yes widened as she cursed herself for missing such an obvious issue. "Taking the body away instead of disposing of it on the spot," at this Gai's eyes widened, and coincidentally, Kakashi reached his limit on chakra, causing him to collapse.

The conscious jonin sighed and spoke, "team seven, carry your sensei, we're heading to the client's house. I assume we can rest there?"

The man nodded, grateful that there seemed to be more ninja protecting him, gestured for them to follow him, and started walking to his house. Naruto, while not expecting any more trouble, but wanted to be sure, jogged ahead of him to take vanguard, while Gai stood next to the client, and the rest of his genin took the other sides. Kakashi's team took him up by one boy taking the shoulders, and the other the legs, and Sakura was screeching at how cool her Sasuke-kun was at helping their sensei, while not even trying to help.

It was going to be a long quarter mile.
