Chapter 10: Far Away

The world, the room was in a swirl of slow motion. Elena stood as she stared down at the picture on the ground, the image laying there and imprinting itself into her memory. Swallowing the lump that was growing in her throat, she felt sick to the pit of her stomach as her heart thumped against her ribcage, the speed as fast as a humming birds.

Looking around his bedroom, she walked over and lifted a frame off of the bedside table as she seen an old-looking photograph of Damon and Stefan. Opening up the frame, she took the picture out and turned it over, reading the date on it. 1864. Dropping the picture, she rushed out of the room as quick as she could.

Who was Katherine and how did they look exactly alike? She got to the bottom of the staircase and froze as a thought entered her mind. Katherine. When Damon and her first met, he called her Katherine. Damon thought that she was Katherine. Tears glazed her chocolate-brown eyes as she felt her stomach tangle up in a ball of knots. Was he only interested because they looked alike?

"Elena, I hope you're alright with bourbon, it's all I seem to have in this basement."

Rushing up the hall, she pulled the door open and lifted the camaro keys off of the hallway table. She stepped outside quickly and shut the door over as she looked around and seen his camaro sitting in the drive. How was it possible? Pictures of them from 1864, it wasn't impossible. Jogging over to the car, she got into the driver's seat as she gripped onto the steering wheel fiercely. She felt so sick, the kind of sick you feel after you haven't eaten for days. Turning the key in the ignition, she pulled off quickly, not slowing down until the house had disappeared from sight in the rear view mirror.

What was she going to do? Did Damon really know her? It was impossible though. Of course it was impossible, that would have to mean Damon was...no. Now that really was impossible, he couldn't be that age because otherwise he would be dead. Looking ahead, she seen someone standing in the middle of the road and pulled at the steering wheel causing the camaro to swerve and break into a 360 turn, only stopping when she hit a tree.

Gasping, she slowly lifted her head from the steering wheel, her head heavy and pounding as she looked around her. Tears fell down her cheeks as she tried pulling off her seatbelt, her hands shaking non-stop. Taking a breath, she slowly UN-clipped the seatbelt and winced in pain as she tried to move. The car was crushed against the tree, making it impossible for her to get out of the driver's side. Crawling onto the passenger seat, she forced the door open and let out a sob as pain shot from her ribs. Stretching her arms out, she held onto the roof with her hands, so that she would have some leverage to pull herself out. Swallowing, she slowly pulled herself forward, getting out a cry as she felt severe pain shoot through her body. Getting out of the car, she fell to her knees, the gravel cutting into her skin as she sobbed. Pulling her phone from her dress pocket, she pushed herself to her feet and sat on the bonnet, dialing a number.

"Hello?" The sweet voice flowed through the speaker, voices and noise in the background.
"Jenna," Elena whispered, sniffing, "I need your help."
"Elena honey, what's the matter? Where are you?"
"I don't know, I really don't know. I'm about 10 minutes away from Wickery bridge, please come."
"I'll be there soon honey, okay?"

The line went dead as she took a shaky breath and looked around herself, darkness swallowing the area whole. Feeling a wet substance on her forehead, she reached up, rubbing at it with her fingertips as she seen blood. Clearing her throat, she turned on her heel quickly as she heard noises. Branches snapping and leafs crunching as if someone was walking over them. Wide eyed, she held her breath, her heart racing as she stared into the forest. Reaching for her ribs, she moaned in pain as her vision was beginning to grow hazy. Looking over her shoulder, she seen headlights coming into view and lifted her hand to block the brightness out.

"Elena?" Jenna called out as she rushed over to her niece, "what happened here?"
"Swerved...into tree." Elena whispered, blinking.
"Oh honey, you're hurt. We need to get you to a hospital."

The brunette gave her a weak nod as Jenna hooked her arm around her waist gently and began leading her towards her car. Hearing Elena's phone ring, Jenna stopped walking and pulled the phone out of her hand.

"Its Damon...wait, that's his car." Jenna picked up, "hello? Yes, she's with me. What do you mean what happened? She was in a crash!"

Elena stared around, the world passing her by as it continued spinning. Jenna's voice was growing more distant and becoming harder to understand. It seemed like it was getting further and further away. Elena's eyes rolled into the back of her head as she collapsed, hitting the ground with a thump. The world going black as the last thing she heard seemed far away.

"Elena!"
