Artemis' P.O.V.
"Can you explain to me why the nurse is calling you my boyfriend please?" I asked Dick once I was positive the nurse had gone out of earshot.
"Oh yeah! They wouldn't have let me come in otherwise. Because if I'm not related to you or your boyfriend I wouldn't have been allowed to see you until later this week or later this month and I wanted to check if you were alright!"
"Okay... That makes sense I guess."
"Good." I'm still confused though, because what I last remember is seeing Robin doing his routine and then the floor, notDick, then the floor. So how did Dick find me? I'll ask Rob the next time I see him. It was only then that I realised I was still holding Dick's hand, I blushed but I didn't try to move away; if I did it would only attract attention to the fact that we were holding hands and then it would get awkward.
"Guess who followed me here?" Dick said all of a sudden.
"Who?"
"Hannah." I should've seen that coming.
"Really? Wow. I know I shouldn't be surprised but it's the weekend. Doesn't she have a life?" Dick raised an eyebrow as if to say: 'Do you really need me to answer that question?'
"Right, of course. You are her life!" I laughed as Dick glared at me. I felt my head pound as I laughed and wondered if I had hit it when I fell. I can't ask Dick because he didn't see me fall, Robin did, but I don't remember hitting my head...
"Artemis! Artemis! Hello? Anyone in there?"
"Huh?" I looked up and saw Dick clicking his fingers in front of my face.
"Sorry! Must've been deep in thought!"
"Okay then. Anyway, I was asking whether you wanted anything to eat or drink, I'm getting something from the vending machines!" Come to think of it I was getting a bit hungry, I hadn't eaten anything since breakfast.
"Yes please!"
"Wait. Let me get this right. Water with a mars bar? Or was it water with salt and vinegar crisps?"
"Oh, shut up. But it's the second one." Dick laughed and walked out the room. I was laying down listening to the beeping of my heart on the heart monitor, when I heard a tap on my window. I turned to see who it was but quickly turned back when I saw who it was. Robin. I covered my face with my bed covers so hopefully he wouldn't find out my secret identity. I heard a muffled,
"Open the window!" and sighed. I got up, still covering my face and walked forward, with my arms stretched out so I wouldn't bump into anything. I heard Robin laughing and followed the sound. I fumbled around for the latch on the window and pulled it up. I heard Robin jump in and I quickly ran in the general direction of my bed. But because I didn't know where my bed was, I fell onto something, rather someone. I felt Robins arms shake as he laughed; he helped me back up and guided me over to my bed. I laid back down and said,
"You didn't see my face did you?"
"No, but you should really be more careful about these things!"
"Oh dear..."
"What?"
"You must be sick!"
"No I'm not! What do you mean?"
"You sounded like Batman! This is an emergency! Someone call an ambulance!" I said, faking fear in my voice. Robin laughed again and I felt him sit down on the end of my bed.
"How did Dick find me? You were the last person I saw when I fell." I said through my covers.
"Well, we needed to get you to hospital but none of us knew your secret identity, apart from Batman but he was in an important meeting so we decided to put you somewhere where someone would find you and there would be a logical explanation to why you were unconscious, so we decided to put you into the gym nearest to the hospital. And that it why Dick found you there. Is he your best friend that is a guy that is out of your hero life?"
"Yes."
"He's your pretend boyfriend."
"Yes. How did you know?"
"I was listening through the window."
"Stalker."
"I am not a stalker!" We sat in silence again. This silence thing always seems to happen to us. It's happened at least twice already today and it's really getting on my nerves. My head started hurting again.
"Why does my head hurt? I don't remember falling on it."
"You didn't, you fell on your back."
"Maybe it's just a headache."
"It's not."
"How do you know?"
"Ummm..."
"How do you know?" I demanded.
"You have a bruise on your forehead..."
"What?! Give me a mirror now!"
"No!" He said hastily.
"Why not?"
"Because it's massive..."
"Give me a mirror!"
"No!"
"Why not? And don't say 'because it's massive' again."
"Because if you look in a mirror I will see your face!"
"Then turn around!"
"No! Just in case!"
"Fine..." I grumbled.
"How do you know I've got a bruise on my forehead if my face is covered?"
"Most of your forehead is showing." I realised he was right and covered it up more.
"Wait. If I didn't fall on my head, then why do I have a bruise on it?"
"I don't know..." I sat thinking for a few minutes, why did this weird bruise appear on my forehead? And why did it come up now? I got no answers. I was about to ask Robin if he had any ideas but before I could he said,
"I've got to go. The big bird is calling, and your boyfriend is coming soon."
"The big bird?"
"Batman." I snorted with laughter and said goodbye. I heard the window close after him and sighed. I took the cover off of my face, relieved to breathe some fresh air, it was getting sticky. It's annoying not letting the team know my secret identity because it's hard to keep it from them and I would like to hang out with them, you know, when we're not fighting mad, creepy, insane, crazy and freakish (*cough* joker *cough*) villains. Anyway, where's Dick? He's taking ages just to get crisps and a drink; maybe he can't find the vending machines.
"Sorry I took so long!" Speak of the devil.
"Most of the vending machines were out of order and then I couldn't find one until I got to the old people's place and then this old lady started talking to me and wouldn't let me leave until I told her a funny story and then I dropped my money under the machine and couldn't get it out but then I managed to move the machine and get it out and then I came back here. Do you see what I go through just to get you water and crisps? You owe me."
"Ok, ok I get the message, I owe you. Wait. How could you not move the vending machine?"
"What do you mean, how couldI not move the vending machine?"
"I mean you're you, you know." I said gesturing to his arms and belly, especially his belly, I mean he has abs, very, very nice abs.
"You think I'm fit." Dick raised an eyebrow.
"What? No, no, no, I'm just saying that you are strong so you could probably move a vending machine!"
"And how do you know I'm strong?"
"Because I can see your muscles." Oh God. I just admitted that he is fit. He is never going to let this go.
"And isn't that what girls like you look at on a guy when you first meet? If he has muscles or if he is fit?"
"Maybe, maybe not. How do you know that though? You're a boy."
"I have spent many, many weeks with Babs when she has been crushing on different guys every week and each time, she has been telling me how fit each one is."
"Well, that makes sense. So did she have a crush on you?"
"Why would she?"
"Well, you're 'fit' so why wouldn't she, should be your question." I did air quotes when I said the word 'fit'.
"I dunno if she did or not, or if she does for that matter. But that would be strange considering we're friends."
"I doubt she does but she probably did, when she first saw you or something."
"Did you have a crush on me?" Dick raised an eyebrow. But seriously, I would never have a crush on Dick. Why? Because he's... he's... well, Dick, I guess. I can't really think of anything bad about going out with him to be honest, but he is a year younger than me, even though he's in the same class, he skipped a year (smart ass) and we're friends so it would be awkward.
"You're joking, right? I mean, you're my friend and it would be awkward!"
"Yes, it would be awkward now, but I meant like, when you first saw me, did you like my fitness?"
"Ha! No, I did not like your fitness when I first saw you because, if you don't remember, I didn't get a proper look at you because there was a flash and you were gone!"
"Hahaha! Yeah, I remember that! I told you we'd laugh about it someday!"
"You're the only one laughing here, Grayson."
"Ok, ok, no need to get cranky!" I glared at him but it soon faded as I saw the nurse come in again. When I saw what she had with her, I almost fainted.
Needles.
Hundreds of needles.
Help me.
Dick's P.O.V.
When the nurse came back in, I saw Artemis' face pale and I knew what was coming. The nurse walked in pushing a silver trolley with at least ten needles on the top tray, each filled with a clear, jelly like liquid, but what was on the bottom tray was what caught my attention. It was now my turn for my face to pale. On the bottom tray was a large syringe (or needle, whatever you want to call it), filled with a fizzing, green substance and I immediately knew what it was...
Venom.
Venom is a very strong anaesthetic that is used on patients, not just to calm them but to calm their bodies as well. Every muscle and every organ in the patient's body would slow down or get weaker, some people have died. It is only used in situations where the patient is near to death and it is used to conserve their energy while the doctors are operating, so I don't know why they're using it on Artemis. I did not want them to use it on Artemis; it would dramatically affect her health so she wouldn't be able to come on the team for a while and there is also the risk of death. I do not want Artemis to die.
"So we are just going to inject you with a few medicines to help your back pain, and then, if all goes well, we're going to put a new medicine in you to make you rest and recover quicker." The nurse said, I guess the latter was the Venom.
"A few medicines! There's like one hundred needles there!"
"Well you won't feel them because of the injection I gave you before!"
"But still! There are needles and you are putting them in me! I don't want you putting them in me!"
"I won't if you want to be in pain for the rest of your life." Artemis just glared at the nurse. It was silent when the nurse was preparing the injections, I saw the Venom needle being prepared and glanced over to Artemis, as it was bigger than the rest, but she was facing the other way, probably to stop herself from freaking out.
"I do not want you to put that stuff in my girlfriend." I said to the nurse, gesturing towards the Venom.
"And I don't want you putting that in me either!" Artemis exclaimed. She probably looked when I gestured and thought the needle was humungous.
"Oh. So you keep up with the science news then!"
"Yes." I said bluntly. Bruce (Batman) actually told me this one, after I found a confidential file in the Bat Cave and I pestered him about it until he told me.
"Now. I know why you wouldn't want me to put this in your girlfriend, but it's for the best, believe me."
"Well, I'm sorry to tell you that I don't believe you and I don't particularly want my girlfriend dying thank you very much. So if you don't mind, I think it's best if you just skip that one out." Artemis stared at me wide-eyed when I had said dying. Ok, maybe that wasn't the best thing to say at this point in time but I think it would've come up sooner or later anyway.
"Ok, now I definitely don't want that thing to go in me!" Artemis exclaimed, even louder this time.
"Ow..." I heard her mutter after; she was rubbing her forehead, the green area, and frowning.
"What's wrong?" I asked.
"I think I know." The nurse said. I glared. I don't particularly like this nurse (If you haven't already guessed that).
"Just listen. We didn't want to tell you this because we thought it might affect your condition if we did, by making you worry, but in these circumstances I think it's alright to tell you."
"Just get on with it." I grumbled.
"Okay, when you fell, you didn't hit your head, right?" Artemis shrugged, "So why do you have that big bruise on your head? When you fell onto a wooden floor, with no mats, on your back, you obviously hit your head on the floor as well, but the back of your head. But the bruise is forming at the front; this is because when you fell, your brain was disturbed by the impact of the fall, so it was pushed into the front of your skull, and your skull moved forward the slightest bit, so the bruise is on your forehead. But your brain is still in that position and it can't be moved unless the brain is relaxed, and that's what Venom does. It relaxes major organs in your body, such as the brain. Yes, there is the risk of your organs stopping completely and you could die but this has worked 76% of the time. So we do recommend it."
"What's Venom?" Artemis whispered, obviously in shock from what she was just told.
"The stuff in the syringe." The nurse replied. Artemis nodded slightly and just stared at the door. It was silent.
"You said the brain needs to rest right?" I asked, the nurse nodded, "Then why don't you let her go to sleep? The brain relaxes then."
"You're right but it won't let the brain relax enough, you're still thinking when you are asleep, that's why you get dreams and we need the brain to be fully relaxed that is why we have Venom." I was annoyed. I don't want Artemis going for this, she could die! What are we (the team) going to do if Artemis dies? We'll have lost our best and only archer, since Roy is still on his own little missions and sometimes we really need her! Like that time when the Red's attacked, none of us would be alive if it wasn't for her!
"Will anything happen to me if I don't take the Venom?" Artemis asked.
"Well you'll definitely have that bruise on your head for the rest of your life... Oh there is one more thing! Your hand-eye co-ordination maybe affected badly if you leave it." Great. Hand-eye co-ordination is exactly what Artemis needs for archery.
"Are there any sports you take part in that involves hand-eye co-ordination?" The nurse questioned Artemis.
"Archery." She answered.
"Oh... Is it a big part of your life?"
"Very big." Artemis said, staring at the door.
"Then I recommend the Venom." It was silent again. So if Artemis doesn't take the Venom then she will have a massive bruise on her forehead for the rest of her life and she will never be able to do archery again and she won't be able to be on the team. But if she does take the Venom then she will have a chance of dying but, if all goes well, she will be able to be on the team and the massive bruise would be gone. But it's Artemis' choice so I can't butt in, but I can give some advice.
"Can we have a chance to talk?" I asked the nurse. She nodded and walked out of the room.
"Look Artemis-"
"I'm going to do it." I stared at Artemis. She was going to have the Venom?
"What?"
"I'm going to have the Venom."
"Why?"
"You know I told you about that Archery and gym club I go to."
"Yeah." It was her explanation to her non-team friends why she was busy after school.
"Well, it's kind of important to me and I don't want to stop it because of some stupid accident. Plus the leader would kill me if he found out I had to quit because of some accident with no gym mats, he is obsessed with them, if we don't have the mats out and we start training, he shouts and we have to get them out immediately. He's kind of strict." I had to hold back a laugh, it was true, Batman had a thing about gym mats.
"You do realise you could die from this?"
"Yeah, but I'm willing to take the risk."
"The club must be very special to you."
"It is, and all my friends there are too." I am truly touched. She is willing to risk her life just so she could help the team and be with her friends. I have no idea why but my belly felt kind of weird when she said all of her friends in the team were special to her, it was a good kind of weird though. Anyway, there are more important matters at the moment, like the fact that Artemis is going to take Venom that can kill her, or be the best thing that has happened to her.
"Are you sure?" I asked, just to make sure that she was ready for this.
"...Yes." She responded.
"Okay. Just remember, I'll be here."
"Thanks, but what about my mum? Where is she?"
"I don't know, I'll ask when the nurse gets back."
"Okay." It was silent. I was looking at Artemis' face, studying her features, to anyone else, she would look calm and maybe a bit worried, but not a lot. But to me she looked petrified, unable to move, scared, lonely. I had trained with Batman to read people's emotions, even when they were covering it up, like Artemis, with a calm demeanour. Yes, she had trained with Sports Master, but I have watched her unfold, letting her emotions come through her mask at times when they are meant to, and watching her open up to us, slowly but surely.
The nurse came back in.
"What's the answer?"
"I'll take it."
"Great. We'll do the normal injections first, and then the Venom."
"Before you do, where is her mum?"
"She said, she'd be on her way as soon as possible, but she had to get the bus."
"Okay. Can we wait with the Venom until she gets here, please?"
"Of course, but we'll have to do the normal ones now."
"That's fine." As the nurse prepared the final needles, Artemis stared at the door, thinking. I looked at her face, trying to read what was going on in her head, trying to figure her out. It was no use, her barrier was up, and she wasn't taking it down any time soon.
Me: Done! Ok, I know this isn't a very exciting chapter but I needed something good to make a good plot! And it isn't as long as the other chapters but at least I did it! Right? Right?
Megan: Right! I hope Artemis is okay though! I don't want her to die!
Me: Well, all will be revealed in the next chapter! All will be revealed..
Megan: Umm... okay?
Me: Please review! It makes my day! Lots of love,
