Hi guys I'm back! *smiles happily* Happy belated New Year! I hope this year is good for you and guess what my new year's resolution is? To tryand update more (Obviously hasn't worked as I'm updating in May.)! Hopefully I will succeed but it may take some time to get back into the swing of things... Anyway... Now about this chapter, this is going to be packed with info and mainly focusing on Artemis, sorry if it doesn't include much humour but there will be a few more Traught moments! I hope you enjoy!
Disclaimer: I do not own Young Justice or any of the characters... yet...*smirks evilly*
Artemis' P.O.V.
I watched as the nurse picked up the first needle and took out this dark green strap from a draw next to her. She came towards me with it,
"What's that for?" I asked, I don't want anything I don't need to touch me.
"It's just a strap to put pressure on your vein so it is more visible. I don't want to miss the vein, now that would be a very painful experience!" She smiled. Like that was going to make me feel better. I could practically feel Dick glaring at her. She ignored him and pulled the strap around my right arm, it was tight but not uncomfortable. I saw the vein gradually coming into sight from behind my skin; like a cat creeping up to its prey (yes that's a Cheshire reference ;) ). I reached for Dick's hand for comfort and he squeezed it, which made me relax even more. I felt a tingle buzz through my arm, not the one the nurse was sticking the needle in.
Wait.
The nurse was sticking the needle in my arm. I started to shake and tense my arm. The nurse sighed and looked at me meaningfully,
"Artemis, you're going to have to stop tensing your arm for me."
"Why?"
"There's more of a chance that you will be able to feel the needle go in, the numbing needle we gave you wasn't that strong."
"Then why didn't you give me a stronger one!" I exclaimed. Well, that was stupid wasn't it. Giving me such a week numbing thing that I might be able to feel it! Pfft. Stupid hospitals.
"You're under 16, it is against the rules to give under 16's stronger than that."
"But it's not against the rules to put Venom into under 16's?" Dick chipped in. Fair point.
"Not in this case."
"What do you mean 'not in this case' is it usually against the rules?"
"That's not for me to explain." The nurse went forward with the needle and I squeezed my eyes shut and crushed Dick's hand, preparing myself for the worst while trying to relax my other arm, very difficult actually, I wouldn't recommend getting yourself into a situation where you need to do so. Anyway, I was doing said action, expecting some sort of stabbing feeling in my arm, but, instead, I felt nothing. Absolutely nothing. Well that certainly was unexpected. I opened my eyes again and I saw the needle coming out of my arm, I cringed when I saw a bit of skin stretch up and fall back down. Dick gently clenched my hand and whispered in my ear softly,
"Are you okay?" I gave him a small nod in reply, and looked back at the nurse.
"That wasn't too bad now, was it?" She said, as if I was a five year old. I glared at her; she coughed slightly and returned back to getting the other needles.
We sped through the other needles, I still didn't look at any of them; Dick comforted me after each one, I never knew he could be so caring and thoughtful. I sighed, we were now waiting for my mum to arrive, the nurse had left us and I was starting to get tired. I guess the busses were busy because of people wanting to go to the beach or something similar, that's why mum is so late. Dick looked at me questioningly, I shot a confused look back and he said:
"You've been staring at me, are you okay?"
"Oh, sorry! I was just thinking about where my mum was, I want to get the Venom over and done with."
"Okay... Are you sure you want to go through with this? I mean, I know your archery means a lot to you but... I guess I'm just worried, about you and what your mum would say about it, I don't think she wants to lose her only daughter."I'm not her only daughter, I think, but I'm probably getting close as Cheshire never comes around and is out of our lives for good. But it's true, I don't know what mum will say about it, I know she probably won't like the idea of me hurting myself in training anyway, let alone it might cause me to... well, you know, Die. I shuddered at the thought and I felt Dick squeeze my hand again.
A few minutes went past and I was about to doze off when, all of a sudden, I saw a huge Cheshire cat, staring at me, it grinned; its malicious smile growing wider and wider, engulfing its face. My heart was beating faster and faster as it leaned in and purred,
"Artemis..."With my eyes closed, I screamed and lashed out with my clenched fist, expecting to feel a crunch of bone or something at least, but... nothing. I cautiously opened my eyes and heard a voice, which I soon recognised as Dick's. He came into view, looking worried,
"Artemis? Are you okay?" he said, concern coating his voice. I nodded and asked him what happened.
"You just screamed and punched the air for no reason. What happened?"
"I- I saw something, I don't know what it was but I saw something creepy." I lied. I'm sorry but won't it sound weird if I say I saw a smiling Cheshire cat? I thought so.
"We should probably tell the nurse." He rang the bell by the side of my bed and the nurse came in, looking exasperated.
"Yes?" she said in a 'hurry-up-I've-got-some-work-to-do' manner.
"Artemis has had a hallucination of some sort. We were wondering why." Dick said sternly. The nurse swallowed and said something under her breath.
"What?" Dick asked.
"I said that one of the injections had hallucinations as a side effect."
"Why didn't you tell us this before?"
"I guess I forgot..."
"You forgot! You forgot? How can you forget something so important?" Dick almost shouted.
"I'm sorry! It just slipped my mind!"
"It slipped your mind! She's having hallucinations! How can that slip your mind! Oh my goodness..."Dick sighed, clearly annoyed at the nurse. The nurse left again looking sheepish. After a few minutes the room door opened, revealing my mum. She sat in her wheelchair, face drawn into a look of concern as she wheeled herself in.
"Artemis, what happened to you?" Her thick Vietnamese accent made me feel comforted; made me feel like I was at home.
"I fell while training." I looked at her in the eyes so she understood what type of training I meant.
"Oh training." She didn't look particularly pleased to hear this, but then again, would any mother be pleased to hear that her crime-fighting vigilante daughter got hurt and might die while training for said crime-fighting? I wouldn't think so.
"Has she seen her forehead?" Mum asked. Okay I really need to see how bad this damage is, because I can't take not knowing what I look like.
"No, I already banned her from seeing anything that she can see her reflection in." Dick said.
"Oh hello Richard! It's nice of you to come and stay with Artemis, how did they let you in, I thought it was family members only?"
"I'm pretending to be her boyfriend so I can see her and see if she was okay."
"Pretending? You two still aren't going out yet? Goodness! How long does it take you to realise you two are so cute together!"
"Mum!"
"Sorry, am I embarrassing you?"
"Yes!" I shook my head and sighed deeply, my mum is like the number one shipper of me and Dick, other than Wally and Megan obviously, she is unbelievable. The nurse came back in and saw my mum, she smiled and said,
"Hello there, you must be Artemis' mother, nice to meet you!" She held out her hand, and my mum took it looking at her like I think I must've when she first spoke to me, like she thought the nurse was way too enthusiastic.
"Do you know everything that's going on or do you need an explanation?"
"I'd like an explanation if possible." The nurse took my mum outside to talk to her and Dick and I were left alone once more.
"How do you think your mum will take it?" I looked at him like he was an absolute twat-head.
"You've met her, she worries about everything! I'll probably have to give up archery for the rest of my life!"
"If that is the case it's for your health and she doesn't want to lose the only family member she has left. You've got to take that into consideration."
"Whose side are you on?"
"Neither, I'm trying to look at both sides of the argument. I mean I wouldn't be too pleased if you died either but I know that I can't persuade you otherwise, only your mum can do that."
"Thank you for not trying, I know you care but I really want to carry on with my archery and if it means getting close to dying I'm willing to try it." Dick nodded just as my mum came back in with the nurse. She looked pale and frightened.
"Artemis..."
"Before you say anything, I really want to carry on with archery, no matter what you say."
"I know, that's why I'm not going to try and stop you," My eyes widened and my jaw dropped, "You're the only daughter I have left, after... you know. And I want you to be the happiest girl you can be, even if that means you might die, I know you would like to die knowing you did it so you could carry on with your dream; you wouldn't be happy if you knew you couldn't do archery for the rest of your life. So I'm willing to support you in any choice you make." I had felt my eyes welling up when she talked about me being her only daughter, but by the last sentence I was crying (Shut up). I felt Dick let go of my hand, which I hadn't realised he was still holding and my mum arms slid around me, warm and comforting. I felt so weak, but mum was like a barrier, protecting me from the outside world, protecting me from harm,
"Thank you." I whispered as she leaned back.
"It's okay." She wiped my face with her thumbs and smiled. I smiled back feeling better about my decision.
"Are we all okay to put the Venom in now?" The nurse said after a minute's silence. I nodded, and held my mum's hand. Mum nodded too, then I looked at Dick,
"I'm okay with it as long as you two are; I'm here to support you in your decision." I smiled gently, silently thanking him. The nurse picked up the needle with the green fizzy stuff inside and told me to try and relax. I took a deep breath in and slowly exhaled, thinking of laughing with my friends and happy times with my mum, the nurse put the needle in my arm. I watched this time, trying to get over my fear, but I still cringed and shivered when I saw it in. The nurse finally took the needle out of my arm and asked me how I felt.
"No different." I said.
"Good, it will start working in a couple of minutes; you might get a bad headache just before you go unconscious. Do you have any more questions?"
"Will she have any more hallucinations?" Dick asked and I saw mum's eyes go wider.
"Hallucinations, what do you mean hallucinations?!" The nurse obviously hadn't told her about my hallucination earlier.
"Artemis had suffered from a side effect of a hallucination, from one of the other jabs," The nurse explained, getting a bit flustered when Dick glared at her.
"Artemis! Are you okay?"
"Yes, I'm fine mum."
"Are you sure? Because you've had horrendous nightmares before!" A chill swept through me, I remembered the nightmares immediately, the horror I had felt, the pain that had stabbed me in the heart and the betrayal I had felt when I saw his face walk out of the door.
"I'm fine." I said shortly. I felt Dick look at me but I turned the other way, trying to block out the thoughts, the memories of the nightmares that destroyed my life.
"Anyway, in answer to your question, patients haven't had more than one, but there is a possibility for another. If there is we will have to put neutraliser in so it stops that particular jab from working." I saw my mum nod from the corner of my eye and I'm pretty sure Dick nodded too. The nurse said to call her when I fell unconscious, and she left once more.
"Richard, would you mind leaving us alone for a little while?"
"Of course." He left the room and mum looked at me.
"Artemis, what did you see in your hallucination?" I looked into her eyes, I should have seen this coming. When I had my night terrors I saw terrible things that scarred me and memories that got worse in the dreams; I had told my mum about these and she had got increasingly worried and at one point took me to the doctors because she got so worried. But they stopped when I joined the team and I was happy again, I joined a new school- the one I met Dick at- and I had a better life.
"Artemis?"
"Sorry, it-it was a Cheshire cat. It was on me and it leaned in... I-I screamed and punched it, but it disappeared." I stammered, mum looked at me, eyes filling with tears.
"Oh Artemis, I'm sorry." She wrapped her arms around me and I felt tears roll down my face. I cried silently holding my mum for a minute; I felt comforted almost immediately and soon started feeling sleepy. My head started hurting more and more. It soon felt like my head was splitting in half.
I then realised that the Venom was working and I felt my heart beat faster and faster.
"Mum."
"What?"
"Tell Dick that he is my best friend and tell the team they've made my life ten times better."
"Why?"
"I love you."
"Artemis?" Then I went into complete darkness.
Dick's P.O.V.
"Artemis?" I heard from the room. I wanted to walk in but I thought it was better not to.
"Artemis? Artemis wake up!" That was it, I needed to go in. I opened the door and peeked in, just to check. When I saw Paula with her head in her hands, and Artemis' unconscious body, I rushed in.
"Is she okay?" I asked.
"She's gone." Paula whispered. When she said that I thought she'd meant that the worst had happened and I felt my chest clench and my throat went dry; but then I heard the constant beeping of the heart monitor and realised she meant the Venom had worked. Paula sobbed and I said,
"It'll be okay." I said in what I hope was a reassuring voice, I placed my hand on her shoulder in a comforting manner (hopefully).
"I'm sorry; it's just that I don't want to lose my only daughter after her sister walked out."
"Her sister walked out?" Of course I knew this, I know everything about Artemis- because I'm a detective, and I've read her file. Like I've read everyone else's, I'm not just an Artemis stalker- I stalk everyone.
"She hasn't told you?" I shook my head, because it's true, she's never told me, I found out myself, "Oh, I thought she would've told you by now. Anyway, when she was younger, her father was travelling and I was away for work, her sister was looking after her. Che- her sister, wanted to go travelling with her father and said Artemis would slow her down, plus Artemis said someone needed to stay home for when I returned," Paula smiled, "Well, her sister left and Artemis was home alone for a few days, when I returned, I found her crying on her bed, it was one of the worst moments of my life."
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"It's okay, I'm just surprised that Artemis never told you... Before she fell unconscious she said to tell you that you were her best friend, she really meant it." I felt my throat go dry and my chest clench again, but this time I also felt my eyes sting slightly. I blinked back the tears and smiled. I'm actually, genuinely touched at that, she knew that she might die and one of her last thoughts was to make sure that I knew I was her best friend. Wow.
"Thank you for telling me."
"Anything to get you two together." Paula smiled, I looked at her pointedly and rolled my eyes, smiling. I looked at Artemis and realised we were meant to call the nurse, I pressed the button and the nurse soon came through the door.
"Ah, good. I'll just have to do a few more tests to make sure everything is okay."
"More tests! This is unbelievable, you have done so many tests on her in past few hours! Why have you done so many?" I asked.
"Well, this is quite a serious case, she's been very luck that she hasn't broken her skull. We also might have to do an operation on her back, as you know, that's what she fell on after all."
"Why didn't you tell her before?" Paula questioned.
"I didn't want to worry her even more. However, when she wakes up we will have to take an x-ray, just to check if we do need to do an operation or not."
"You mean if she wakes up."
"I'm sorry Mrs Crock but could you please leave us for a minute?"
"Ms Crock. And yes, I will." She wheeled herself out and I immediately got suspicious, feet ready, eyes alert, and jaw clenched.
The nurse turned to me, eyes digging straight into mine.
"Look, I know you have a grudge against me, and I don't know why; but what I do know is that, a) You're not her boyfriend, b) You should be her boyfriend and, c) Your kids will be the cutest kids ever, because I mean, come on, you're Bruce Wayne's son, and Bruce Wayne is pretty fit." My eyes widened at point b), they grew as wide as saucers by point c) and by the time she called Bruce (Batman) fit, I was laughing so much that I had closed them right up again, to try to stop the tears from falling out. I mean, Bruce, fit? Oh, I am way, way, way, way more fit than Bruce. I mean, if Bruce lifted his shirt, he would probably only have a six pack, I mean so do I but I'm fourteen and he's thirty-six, he's had thirty-six years to gain that six pack and I've only had fourteen, by the time I'm thirty- six I'll probably have a twelve pack at least.
Anyway, the nurse said that she knows I'm lying and I should be her boyfriend and we should have kids together. Well, that was interesting.
"Okay, a) Why on Earth do you think that? b) I am her boyfriend, and c) If this relationship does last forever then, I absolutely agree because I am very fit, even fitter than Bruce Wayne, I'm not his child by the way, I am his ward, there's a difference."
"I think that because, you might be a good liar normally but let me tell you, you cannot lie to save your soul when you care about someone that is injured at that particular moment in time. I agree you are fitter than the average teenager, but you are certainly not fitter than Mr Wayne, have you seen the size of his arms! They're bigger than your arms multiplied by ten!"
"But you haven't seen my arms tensed, they're like the size of his arms, maybe a bit smaller."
"Go on then." She crossed her arms, expectantly. I looked at her and slowly lifted up my blue chequered shirt to reveal my, very nice, biceps. I then tensed my arms and felt my muscles bulge up, I then saw the nurse's eyebrows form into a 'well, point made' shape.
"Still not as fit."The nurse said shrugging her shoulders. I looked at her again while she was testing Artemis' blood pressure and heart beat.
"Everything is fine; you can invite Ms. Crock back in now." I walked to the door, opened it and found Paula waiting outside.
"You can come back in." I said.
"Bruce is fitter." She said as she wheeled herself back in.
"Why is everyone saying that? It's not true! If you ask Artemis when she wakes up; she will tell you it's not true!" The nurse and Paula both looked at me like 'Uh-huh, you know that's not true'.
"What? Okay go ask Hannah Minestrone then!"
"The crazy stalker one?" I nodded, "I think she would be highly offended if we even bothered to ask her that. I mean she would say you in a split second." Paula said.
"And she is absolutely right in thinking that."
"No she isn't, because Bruce Wayne is pretty damn fit." I rolled my eyes, Bruce is gonna hear all about this.
Me: And done! Okay, I'm sorry, not the best chapter I've done, but there will be more interesting stuff happening next chapter I promise!
Kaldur: to be blunt, I think I'm the fittest but if it's between the family then I guess I'll have to step out of this one.
Me: Well, that was blunt. I haven't had internet for almost over a week and I think I have actually died. Anyway! Lots of virtual love! (And remember my new year's resolution that I'll try to do!)
Kaldur: From me too!
