Tsuna was released a few days later thankfully. He was on another plane of existence most of the time as there was nothing he could do. He forgot his handheld devices at his house when he moved into the school. He was still waiting for his dad to send them to the school or a day where he could go get them himself but it wasn't happening. He was tempted to ask Reborn to help out but that would probably be a little weird so he scrapped that thought almost immediately.
Reborn was waiting for him at the doors when he walked down the hall. It was a nice feeling to have somebody he actually liked waiting for him this time. He gave a small, relieved smile to Reborn when they made eye contact. Reborn didn't return it because he flicked his eyes behind Tsuna.
Tsuna turned his head and saw his dad walking behind him from the cafeteria and his smile became a lot harsher.
"Hey, kiddo!" Iemitsu called out. Tsuna stopped and waited for him to catch up. "How is everything?"
"I'm in constant pain." Tsuna signed out. He tried to flex his wrist but that was a bad idea as pain flared up his arms and down his fingers to the degree he had tears in his eyes.
Iemitsu looked over at Reborn in slight confusion. Reborn sighed as he shifted his weight.
"He said he's in constant pain. His wrists lost a lot of the cartilage so his bones rub together. He has arthritis like pains from it." Reborn explained. He had started playing with a strand of hair that hung near his face mid-sentence. Iemitsu seemed annoyed at the, fidgeting with his fingers.
"There's medication to numb the pain. Don't be such a wuss, Tsuna. I raised you better than that!" Iemitsu hit Tsuna's back in what was supposed to be a comforting touch but just made Tsuna stumble into Reborn. "I'll go get the car. You two lovebirds sit tight."
"I can see why you'd rather not interact with him." Reborn commented when they were alone.
Tsuna still had his face buried in Reborn's chest and he was shaking slightly in both mild anger and embarrassment. He couldn't say anything because he couldn't move his wrists and talking was still a no-go so he looked up at Reborn with the angriest face he could muster.
"You look like an angry toddler, Tsuna." Reborn said. Tsuna's eyes widened and his mouth turned down in annoyance. "Your dad is also staring daggers into my head so we better go."
Sadly, Iemitsu was making the same type of comments and conversation as before. Thankfully at least, Reborn agreed to sit in the back with Tsuna so Tsuna was able to push the conversation onto Reborn. Later on, Reborn put Vaseline in his socks but it was worth it.
"So, I'll see you around, son." Iemitsu announced as the two stepped out.
Tsuna bowed his head and when he looked up, Iemitsu was gone. He looked over at Reborn who shrugged. "He doesn't want to stick around you since he sees you as a failure."
That stung. Tsuna felt the comment pool in his gut but it was overtaken with anger because, honestly, there was no right for Imitsu to say that because Iemitsu didn't even know his own son. Reborn pushed Tsuna along and he went but he was brewing on what Reborn had told him.
He looked up and was about to sign out and ask Reborn how he knew that about his dad when somebody called his name. Reborn locked eyes with Tsuna and muttered, "Later", before Kyoko and Yamamoto came into view.
Kyoko tackled Tsuna in a hug, both of them almost going down. Reborn caught Tsuna, holding his back until Tsuna regained his balance.
"Tsuna! I'm glad you're alright!" Kyoko exclaimed. Tsuna looked over at Reborn in confusion. This was not the treatment he expected from his ex-girlfriend.
"Let's go inside before it gets dark, okay?" Yamamoto called. Kyoko practically dragged Tsuna along with Yamamoto and Reborn trailing along, making idle chatter under Kyoko's manic babble.
The group made their way up through the stairs, Tsuna trying to breathe normally as he went. They all filed into Tsuna's and Reborn's dorm, Reborn leaving to make tea for everybody. The remaining three were chattering, Tsuna doing his best to keep up. His wrists were still stending jolts of fiery pain down his arms when he moved them so he wasn't keeping up very well.
Reborn came back with a tray of drinks and a bottle in his hand. He tossed the bottle in the general direction of where Tsuna was sitting and Yamamoto caught it on impulse. He handed them over to Tsuna with his entire face questioning what they were. Tsuna didn't know what they were so Reborn was forced to answer.
"It's medication for your wrists, Tsuna. I was given it this morning while you were getting tests done. One of the nurses gave me the prescription and the nurse at schools fills it so whenever you run low, go to him." Reborn explained. He set the tray down and took the cup filled with coffee for hImself. "Make sure everybody's in bed at a reasonable time since your sleep will be terrible when you go back to school Monday."
Reborn left to his room. Tsuna shrugged. At least he was able to get some form of medication for his pain. Maybe it would help his chest pain too.
"Do you want me to take that off for you, Tsuna?" Kyoko asked.
Tsuna smiled sheepishly as he nodded, handing the bottle over to her. It was a child locked cap so it took effort to get it off and Tsuna knew for a fact if he tried, he'd be in tears before he even started twisting.
The three were talking too animately for them to realize how late it was. By the time Reborn finally kicked Kyoko and Yamamoto out it was nearly midnight. The curfew was eight so they had to go through some serious spy maneuvers to even get back to their rooms.
"Get to bed." Reborn said. Everybody had left. Reborn wasn't taking no for an answer either as he herded Tsuna into his room. "If you have a nightmare again, tell me about it."
Reborn shut the door behind him. Tsuna could hear him moving to his room. Reborn walked really lightly though and only the swishing of his clothes gave away he was actually moving. It was dead silent and Tsuna was even surprised he could hear Reborn's clothes in the first place.
It was a type of eerie quiet attributed with horror. Like how right before a jump scare, every single sound dies and the silence presses on your head. Then you only hope for some sort of sound to get rid of the silence. Tsuna hated this kind of silence after the chatter surrounding him just minutes before. He could hear Reborn moving around in his room next to Tsuna's so that was at least a small comfort.
Tsuna tossed and turned the whole night. He was tempted to go into the living room and curl up on the couch. But he felt like Reborn would hear him and shoo him straight back to bed.
It was a long night to say the least. There was a teacher's inservice today to there was no school. That was the only highlight as he didn't have to get up right away. He ended up not staying in bed the entire day thanks to that.
Reborn was in and out of his room. Tsuna was asleep half the time so he woke up to a bowl of food and water next to his bed most of the time. He was surprised Reborn did that so much. Tsuna knew it was just because it was his job. He wasn't exactly special.
The only thing that kind of shocked him was Reborn opened the curtains too. They were dark blue so they didn't let in much light when they were closed. So Reborn pushed them to the side and opened the window a crack to let some air in. It brought a smile to Tsuna's face at least to be able to see the sky.
Little things like that prompted him to move around. He was able to get dressed and he ate a majority of what he was given. It wasn't a big thing but when he brought it up, Reborn smiled a little. It made him feel like he did something good today.
The small changes he made were barely enough though and he was going through the motions now. He woke up, got dressed, ate, went to school, did homework, took a shower, and went to bed. Those were his days for weeks. Closer to a month later was when Reborn drew the line.
"Tsuna, there's somebody who wants to meet you." Reborn said. He barely even gave any warning before he was herding Tsuna out into the living room to wait for said person. He had no idea what was happening and he probably looked worse for wear. Tsuna tried to swat his hair down but there was no use. It was as tangled and spiked as ever.
There was murmured conversation at the door. Reborn was talking fast and low and in another language altogether. Tsuna wasn't sure which language but Reborn knew at least six so there was no guessing on this one.
Finally, Reborn stepped back and let the person into the dorm. He has dark hair and in the poor lighting they had, Tsuna was trying to figure out if it was blue or black. He didn't know but the guy was cute. And tall. Tsuna was short so he was going to have to strain to make eye contact. Speaking of his eyes, they were the weirdest colour Tsuna had ever seen. One was blue and that was nice, that was fine; it was bright blue, like the blue you think of in the deepest part of the ocean. His other eye was bright red though; like the bright red of a passing stranger's coat or the fiery red you see in the sky.
"Hello", the guy said. His voice was smooth and calculated. "My name is Mukuro. You must be Tsunayoshi?"
Tsuna nodded. He looked over at Reborn in alarm but Reborn was talking to somebody else on the other side of the door. He was smiling easily and Tsuna wrenched his eyes back to Mukuro in front of him.
"It's nice to meet you, Tsunayoshi. How are you?" Mukuro asked. He sat down next to Tsuna, perched at the edge of the chair. Somebody else walked in and Reborn left. The second person looked a lot like Mukuro but her features were softer and more timid in nature. She only had one violet eye that Tsuna thought, for sure, was a contact. She smiled nervously at him, introducing herself with a soft, melodical voice as Chrome. She bowed her head quickly and sat in the love seat that was tucked against the adjacent wall.
Tsuna made a vague gesture towards Mukuro's question. There was really no answer that wouldn't dampen the mood. They just met, there wasn't much Tsuna wanted to say in the first place. He just shrugged and turned to the two of them, raising an eyebrow. He forgot to take his pain medication and wasn't sure if he still could but he couldn't use his limited sign language thanks to that.
The three made idle chatter. Mukuro seemed more talkative of the two and it turned out that they were also related. Not siblings but distant cousins. They didn't seem like they were very close to Tsuna but he appreciated the aspect that they loved each other.
It was hard to tell with Mukuro because he had a calculated smile on all the time, like he was waiting for Tsuna to say something wrong so he could leave. Tsuna couldn't blame him but ti still hurt.
Their conversation seemed to be getting easier though. Mukuro carried it easily. If one died off, he had another subject on his lips immediately to fill the void of sound.
"What's your opinion on religion?" Was the most recent question. Chrome looked at Mukuro in confusion, obviously not expecting the question. "Mine is Roman Catholic but I grew up in Italy so that ones a given. What about you, Tsunayoshi?"
Tsuna shrugged. He clumsily made his way through signing out, "My mother never cared much for religion, my father did not stick around to give us much push along either in his."
"I have to say, I didn't catch much of what you said. I know some signs in the American Sign Language but never thought of learning the Japanese." Mukuro said. He smiled apologetically, bowing his head slightly. Tsuna shook his head, smiling back.
Tsuna didn't expect him too ao it was a big deal. He held up a finger as he rummaged into his pocket, pulling out his phone. He forgot he could type out what he wanted to say. So he did that as fast as he could with his wrists.
When he was done he showed it to Mukuro and Chrome and the two nodded politely.
"My parents were the same way." Chrome muttered. "My father was from America but only grew up around religion, never practiced it."
"I don't much care for the whole church going experience, to be quite honest. I'd rather believe on my own time, not be told what I already know from a pastor that's too bigotted to be able to do much good.l"
Tsuna shrugged and typed out, "There aren't many churches in Japan since not very many people have a Christian faith. There are temples. Not exactly Christian though."
"I leave you guys alone for an hour and you start talking about religion." Reborn remarked, He was breezing back into the room, into the kitchen. "You two also need to leave too because stay any sooner and you'll have to sneak into your dorms."
"It was truly a pleasure." Mukuro said. He held out his hand for Tsuna. Tsuna thought he was going for a hand shake and he was alright with that and gave a small smile as he clasped Mukuro's hand.
Of course, Mukuro kissed his hand. He wasn't going for a hand shake. Tsuna was left stunned, pleasantly surprised, and too embarrassed to wave them off.
Reborn came up behind him, looking too amused with Tsuna's face. "Close your mouth, you'll catch flies."
Tsuna snapped his jaw closed and shot an alarmed look at Reborn. "What was that about?" He signed awkwardly.
"He kept insisting I introduce you two. He's in my year, or the year above yours. You have classes together and he 'noticed you'. If you end up hooking up with him, don't do it here." Reborn gazed down at Tsuna, still mildly amused at the situation. "Be careful though. I've seen him before."
"In a good way?"
"No", Reborn ran a hand through his hair, looking slightly confused. "...Just watch out and remember what I said.."
people have bee saying that this chapter along with 6/7 were messed up with HTML throughout the entire doc so hopefully this fixes it?
