Hellooooo So… I know it's been forever and a day since I last updated but, just like for my other story (House of Couples) this is a test chapter. I want to know if people are still interested. But you haaaaaaave to let me know. Okay you just have to. If you don't, I won't continue with this story.
This chapter is probably the longest chapter I've ever written. Truthfully it could be split up into two chapters but eh go be or go home I guess. There basically are two chapters in here. And it's another prequel! When I asked after chapter... I think it was 12? You guys said you liked it, so here's another one. Remember, there is no Jack Jackal in this and some of the members of Anubis aren't here yet. But you will see quite a few familiar faces this one. Anyway, enjoy this enormous update!
Chapter 18
Joy, Patricia, Jerome, and Alfie were all lined in front of Victor as he paced back and forth in front of them. Joy wore an amused expression, Patricia had a bored one. Jerome had an indifferent expression, Alfie had a mischievous one. Joy's hair was now just passed her shoulders. Alfie's prank on her, where he stuck gum in her hair and she had to cut it off, lasted the longest, but she was actually feeling like a girl again. Alfie's stomach growled, behind them were tons of sweets and cakes that Trudy made just for the new arrivals. Perhaps to give off the impression that there was nothing to fear about going into Anubis House. Ha!
"Listen up you..." Victor searched in his mind for the accurate term to describe them.
"Children with too much brain power for their own good, which in turn makes them do bad things?" Jerome suggested.
"Misunderstood and stressed pre-teens who just want to have a little fun?" Alfie tried.
"Four people who want this over with so they can eat and leave?" Patricia replied boredly.
"Let's be real, the word he's looking for is rodents or scum or something like that." Joy rolled her eyes.
"The word I'm looking for is.." Victor thought hard. "Miscreants!"
"Ooh nice vocabulary, is that your word of the day?" Alfie asked.
"Trudy is coming here with four more children and-" Victor started. Patricia let out a long moan.
"Why?" Patricia asked. "We're just going to kick them all out."
"No you are not." Victor stopped in front of the red head. "And if you attempt to, the consequences will be quite severe."
"We're all pretty terrified." Jerome yawned. They heard the door open and all four of them sat down. Two boys and two girls followed Trudy inside. One boy was tall and had long shoulder length blonde hair, the other was short and had short brown hair. The girls were kind of similar. They both had red hair put in pigtails, and excited expressions on their faces.
"We're going to do something new this time." Trudy began as she looked between the new students, and the ones on the couch. "We're going to pair each of you with each of them."
"Why?" Jerome asked from his seat.
"In hopes of creating a stronger bond between you and them." Trudy said. They all heard the part that went unsaid. "So maybe you won't make them all leave this time."
"I think that's a horrible idea." Joy said. "Why would I want someone following me around like a lost puppy. The place isn't that big they can find their way themselves."
"It's not up for discussion." Victor said.
"So..." Trudy cleared her throat. "Mr Landis Robinson? You're with Alfie Lewis."
The blonde, who needed no explanation of which was Alfie (they were very well known around school now), walked from his spot and sat next to Alfie, who gave him the most reproachful look that he actually slid over a little bit And Jerome choked out a laugh.
"Mr. Fabian Rutter will be with Jerome Clarke." unlike Landis Robinson, the small boy stood in place, which Jerome had no problem with.
"Ms. Amelia Pinches will go with Joy Mercer..." Trudy decided and the girl beamed. "And Willow Jenks will go with Patricia Williamson. I hope you have fun... getting to know each other."
Victor and Trudy left, as they both had things to do and they felt the need to supervise not necessary so early. Jerome, Alfie, Joy, and Patricia usually waited a few dayd to do something crazy. They always wanted to feel the new kids out. Patricia stood up and in front of them.
"Listen newbies." she began. "Here's how it's going to work here, you have two days to prove whether or not we find you annoying or not. By the looks of it, we will."
Joy snorted.
"If we find you annoying, we'll give you one final test. This test will determine whether or not we will allow you to stay or if we'll make it our business to get you out." Patricia said. The little brown haired boy, Fabian, raised his hand.
"Uh... isn't it u-up to Mr. S-Sweet who stays a-and who g-goes?" he asked. Jerome looked at his wrist as if he wore a watch.
"Wow two minutes and you've already been deemed annoying by me, not a good start." Jerome stood up. "The short answer is no. Now come on. I'm going to my room so I suppose you are too."
As Jerome left, Patricia and Joy quickly went up the stairs and the two red headed girls followed them. Alfie, however, headed to the snacks. Landis followed him. "Hey uh..." the blonde started. "You're not really like that are you? I mean everyone says you actually gave them their just desserts."
Alfie glanced at him and resisted rolling his eyes. "No Lenny, I don't like to be mean to people. I'm just trying to survive."
Landis grinned as he got some treats as well. "I knew it! I knew you would be cool."
"Mmhmm." Alfie said as he headed to his room with his heaping amount of desserts. "Hey man, could you open the door for me?"
"Yeah, no problem." Landis opened the door to Alfie's room, where Jerome was reading a magazine and listening to music, and Fabian was standing awkwardly on the side.
"Dude leave." Jerome said.
"No, you leave this is my room too." Alfie sat on his bed.
"But it was my room first." Jerome answered in a sing song voice. Alfie gave him a look that plainly said he was planning something. Jerome nodded slightly. "But whatever, we can go somewhere else, I'm hungry anyway."
Jerome lead the shy quiet boy out of the room as Alfie started devouring his food. Landis looked at his stuff, all of his nick nacks were cool but the thing that really caught his eye was the silver urn. "What's that?"
Alfie looked where Landis was looking. "Those are... my dad's ashes."
Landis's gut dropped, he had never seen an urn before. "Oh... sorry..."
"It's okay." Alfie shrugged.
"You're not going to... y'know..."
"Scatter them?" Alfie asked. "Yeah, but not yet. I'm not done with him."
Though Alfie seemed to be getting along pretty well with his new person, Jerome, Joy and Patricia were going out of their minds.
Jerome's nerves were being danced on. He thinks about pulling a very small prank on Trudy, Fabian outs him by saying he shouldn't do that, it'd be breaking the rules. He goes to watch TV, Fabian tells him he should be doing homework. Was this what it was like to have a conscience?
Willow, however, didn't stop talking. And she 'squeed' about everything.
"Milly and I have been here a month and a half, and we'd been waiting to get into this house. We hear you all have so much fun and it's the best house here! SQUEE! I'm so excited!' Willow explained to an uninterested Patricia. "So what would you like to do? What do you usually do?"
"Torture the newbies." Patricia said plainly.
"Oh..." Willow stopped. "Like orientation? Well that sounds fun!"
Patricia rolled her eyes.
Joy had caught Amelia going through her stuff when Joy had gone to the bathroom. "What in the hell- what do you think you're doing?"
Amelia jumped. "Nothing."
She had gone through Joy's clothes, hair accessories (which she was kind of into at the moment after having to wear her hair so short for so long), and was looking through her books.
"What gave you the right?" Joy stormed in her room putting all of her things back.
"I was just... wondering what made Joy... Joy."
"Next time try asking!" Joy exclaimed.
"If I asked, you wouldn't have told me."
"You're weird." Joy pointed at her. "You're weird and creepy and I can't wait until you are out of this place, which you will be."
Amelia frowned and left the room, where she found Willow. "I don't think Joy likes us very much."
"Oh..." Willow said sadly. "Well I think I've really hit it off with Patricia!"
They walked together down the steps. "Joy said we'd have to leave eventually. Maybe if we start to be friends with the others..."
"Jerome's cute..." Willow said.
"So is Alfie." Amelia smiled. "Once we've secured our spots here, you should go for Jerome and I'll go for Alfie."
"Sounds like a plan!" Willow grinned.
Landis was walking back to Alfie and Jerome's room, and he heard Alfie moan in pleasure. He eased the door open, where he saw in the reflection of Alfie with his hand in the silver urn. He brought out a handful of ashes slipping out of his hand, and licked his palm. Landis almost wretched right there as Alfie let out another moan of pleasure. He backed away from the door quickly just as Jerome passed him. Jerome opened the door to see Alfie licking his palm.
"Alfie, buddy, what are you doing?" Jerome asked.
"Licking my deceased father's ashes from my hand to give me strength and power." Alfie said casually. Jerome knew his dad wasn't dead. He just saw him two weeks ago. He stepped to Alfie, dipped his finger in the urn, and licked his finger.
"Is this..."
"Black cherry flavored sugar candy, or 'ashes', I bought online to freak out the next guy who tried to come in the house?" Alfie finished for him with a smile. "Yup."
"You evil genius." Jerome laughed.
Landis went to Trudy with a look of horror on his face. "Could I maybe please switch partners?"
"Switch partners? But why?" Trudy asked.
"I uh... I'd just really think I'd like to switch. Partners." Landis said. "Please."
"I suppose..." Trudy sighed. "The girls can switch partners as well."
Landis sighed in relief and Trudy eyed him curiously. That day Landis went to Jerome, Fabian went with Alfie, Willow went with Joy, and Amelia went to Patricia. Joy was glad to be rid of Amelia, as was Jerome about Fabian.
It took two minutes to decide he didn't like Landis. He didn't even know that he had a good reason. Landis just... bugged him. When Landis talked Jerome wanted to claw her ears off. When he sat next to him, Jerome had to move away just to not want to vomit. And he followed him everywhere.
"He's supposed to." Trudy said when Jerome complained this to her. "That's the point of the buddy system."
"But I'd like to pee without knowing he's right outside the door waiting for me."
The conversation didn't continue after that, Landis came in saying 'there you are man!'. But Jerome seemed to make his point to Trudy. Even she looked somewhat put off the by the bathroom thing. Between Fabian and Landis, Jerome thought he'd end his misery and jump in front of a trolley.
Alfie, surprisingly, had the opposite reaction to Fabian. After he settled down in the room, they didn't bother each other. Alfie sat with both headphones in his ear, even though only one worked, while Fabian read to himself. Every once and awhile Alfie would mumble some lyrics to the song he was listening to but it hardly bothered Fabian.
Thirty minutes later, Alfie seemed to be really into one particular song. He was mumbling a few words in a melody, but it wasn't until the chorus that he really began to sing.
"Welcome to the Hotel California! Such a lovely place! Such a lovely face!" Alfie sang. He wasn't much good, but Fabian laughed, and dug into his stuff for a moment. Alfie didn't notice as he continued singing and playing the air drums. Fabian ended up finding what he was looking for, his guitar, when Alfie was about to go to the chorus again. Fabian began to strum the melody to 'Hotel California' and for a moment Alfie thought his headphone was working again. Then he realized Fabian was playing and took his headphones out completely. And continued to sing.
"Welcome to the Hotel California! Such a lovely place!"
"Such a lovely place" Fabian added.
"Such a lovely face!" Alfie sang. "Livin' it up in the Hotel California! What a nice surprise..."
"What a nice surprise."
"Bring your alibis." Alfie finished. "Dude that's awesome! Why didn't you say you played guitar?"
Fabian shrugged. "Never would have thought you'd be interested."
"No man, I love the guitar. Music in general just..." Alfie trailed off and started making hand motions that somehow Fabian understood.
"Yeah, I actually learned to play because of that song." Fabian stated.
Alfie looked the kid up and down. "You might be alright."
"Listen Patricia." Amelia said matter of factly as she sat next to the girl on her bed. Patricia raised an eyebrow and looked at the annoying redhead. "Now that I'm in Anubis house, I'm thinking we've got to make some changes. For one thing, we're a house to be reckoned with. Maybe we should start looking at it. I think all of the girls should match more, make us look more like a team."
"We wear uniforms."
"Yes but we accessorize differently. Maybe one day we can all wear pigtails or-"
"Don't make me barf." Patricia said.
Amelia shrugged and started playing with her sock. "Joy's such a little thing. Can she really be trusted to lead our house."
Patricia glared at her. "Look, there is no leader. And if there were, I can promise you, you would not be it. And get off my bed!"
"It's much softer than mine." Amelia bounced a bit. Patricia scoffed and left the room. "Hey... where are you going?"
While this was happening, Joy was with Willow in her room. "Can I tell you something?" Willow asked Joy. Joy flipped the page to her magazine and nodded. "I just wanted to say I think you're really a great person."
Joy looked up from her magazine. "Not many people say that."
"Not many people are as perceptive as me. You have a hard exterior but your heart is good."
Joy looked Willow up and down. "I don't think you're as good at people reading as you think you are, considering who your best friend is."
"Are you talking about Amelia? She's much better when you... get to know her."
"I doubt that." Joy said bluntly. "Let me guess. You've known her for a very long time and you feel almost obligated to stay her friend. Well, you aren't. Sometimes, you have to cut the bad people out of your life, even if it seems like you're supposed to keep them around forever. I did that with my dad."
Willow stared at Joy. "You cut your dad off? You're so young!"
Joy shrugged. "I needed to."
Willow let out a long sigh.
"But hey, I don't know her like you do. Maybe you should keep her around. I'm just trying to tell you from someone who knows about toxic people."
Willow smiled. "Thanks anyway. Like I said, you have a good heart."
Patricia came in with a hard look on her face. "We're going to have a house meeting. With just us and the boys in fifteen minutes before I lose my mind."
Joy, Patricia, Jerome, and Alfie were all sitting in Patricia and Joy's room. Willow left and the other residents were downstairs doing something that would probably annoy Patricia to the point of murder. She was miserable with the newbies in the house, and Jerome wasn't much better. That's why they were meeting a day earlier than they usually do.
"So what do we think of them?" Joy asked eyeing Patricia.
"I hate them all and I want them out." Patricia said immediately.
"I second that. Meeting adjourned let's get them out of here." Jerome said with a sense of finality.
"Wait, wait..." Alfie said. "I actually like Fabian. He's kind of cool."
"There is nothing cool about that little brown haired mouse." Jerome spat.
"I think Willow's cool." Joy spoke up. "She's kind of annoying at first but when you actually have a conversation with her..."
"Okay look." Patricia began. "We'll give them a chance. Test them out, see how long they can last. If they can handle it, they'll stay. If not, they go."
"Like an initiation?" Jerome asked. He shrugged. "Seems fine to me. Who's first?"
"I say surfer hair." Alfie said. "He's so... plain and boring. He's a waste of space, he can go."
"Then Amelia." Joy said. "She needs to leave."
"Then Mouse." Jerome said. "He won't last long."
"We can test pigtails last." Patricia said. "But if you ask me, none of them will last long at all."
"Well we'll see, maybe they'll surprise us." Joy shrugged.
Landis looked between the four of them. They had invited him to Joy's room to 'talk'. What they had to say was a surprise to him. "What?" he asked. Jerome and Alfie chuckled.
"Not the sharpest is he?" Jerome said. "We're going to give you a chance to prove to us you should be here."
"What does that mean?" Landis asked.
"We're going to test you. If you pass you stay, if you fail, you leave." Joy simplified it.
Landis sputtered. "You don't have that kind of authority!"
"Do you want to bet?" Alfie asked. Landis glared at him. Alfie may have freaked him out, but he still thought he wanted no part of the other three.
"I thought you said you weren't like them. That you were a nice guy." Landis frowned. The other three then started laughing.
"Is that a joke?" Patricia asked.
"I'll go to Mr. Sweet." Landis said.
"We're not scared of Mr. Sweet." Jerome rolled his eyes. "If anything, he's probably scared of us."
Landis looked between the four and Patricia got impatient. "Look, your trial starts today after school. Meet us-"
"Just forget it!" Landis stood up and walked to the door. "You four are foul, rotten scum. I will not take part in you torturing me. If you want me out, I'm out! I'd rather sleep outside than in the same house as you!"
Landis stormed out towards Victor's office. Joy sighed. "I was actually looking forward to torturing him."
"How long before Victor storms in here?" Jerome asked. "Five minutes?"
"Thirty seconds." Patricia answered. In actuality it took twenty seven seconds.
"That is the eighteenth child you've ran out of this house!" Victor was red in the face, Alfie was tempted to take a picture. "NO MORE-"
"Victor give us our punishment and go, we have business to attend to." Joy interrupted with a bored expression. It was in that moment that Victor stopped caring. That punishment, cleaning every inch of the school over the weekend, was the last one he gave to them. Well, the last one that had to do with pushing students out of Anubis. It wouldn't matter, until they found the right bunch, they weren't going to stop. He just hoped the 'right bunch' weren't too much trouble.
The initiation that was going to go to Landis was now Amelia's. It was brutal, especially for someone who was fourteen. All four in the clique had gotten drunk before at least twice. But never blackout drunk. They were curious of how one acted when they were blackout drunk. It was all a game to them. Amelia had to meet them in the back of the house at midnight, and in front of her will be twenty shots. If she took all twenty, and didn't do anything embarrassing... they'd let her in. If she failed, it was self explanatory.
When Amelia saw what was in front of her, she nearly left right there. Amelia had never been drunk, she'd never even seen an alcoholic beverage. This is what they were counting on. As of that moment, Joy could do three shots without getting drunk, as could Jerome. Patricia and Alfie could do two. They'd never even tried twenty.
Amelia looked nervous. The crew had already explained that she'd have some kind of test. She didn't know what she'd expect. She'd gotten Willow's lucky scrunchy, which she wore in her left pigtail. She frowned at the drinks as they explained what she already knew, she had to take all of them.
"You all realize... this is illegal..." Amelia gulped.
"Key point of this," Patricia said. "You don't have to do it, unless you want a spot at Anubis."
Amelia sighed, grabbed the first shot glass, and took it down. She nearly gagged, it was gross and it burned! It felt like it was punching her throat the whole way down. Her eyes watered a little as the four smiled.
"One down... nineteen to go..." Jerome chuckled.
"My head hurts." Amelia whined. Her vision was blurring as she picked up the next one and downed it. She was at least ready for the pain that time.
Amelia woke up the next morning with double vision. Her head was pounding, but there was someone by her bed. Willow, smiling at her. "Good morning sleepy head!"
Amelia groaned in disgust. She could feel her heartbeat in her temple. "Could you turn the light off?"
Willow nodded sympathetically and turned the lamp by the bed off. "Crazy night."
"You have no idea." Amelia moaned.
"No I wasn't asking..." Willow said quickly. "And I have a pretty good idea."
Amelia blinked at her. "What do you mean?"
"Well... you sort of... woke up the entire house last night." Willow scratched her head awkwardly. "And it wasn't pretty."
"What did I do?" Amelia asked, fearing the answer.
"Well you were running all around the house.. running is a stretch. Falling?" Willow thought. "There was a lot of falling, that's for sure. You started singing songs from Beauty and the Beast. Everybody woke up by then to watch you fall down the steps. Joy and Jerome just kept laughing. Alfie... I don't know where he was actually. Patricia... was the one who tripped you. Fabian tried to help you up but then you started crying and he... well he looked lost. He didn't really know what to do. Victor got really mad and dragged you up the stairs, Trudy put you to sleep. That's really all that happened."
"I did all of that?" Amelia croaked. "Patricia tripped me?"
"To be fair... you puked on her feet. She wasn't very happy." Willow frowned. "But that's no excuse of course."
"They ridiculed me!" Amelia yelled, and then regretted this immediately. Willow didn't say that the humiliation was the point of the task. "But... Alfie..."
"Like I said, he wasn't even there." Willow said. Amelia smiled a little.
"Um... there's more." Willow started. "You've been suspended."
"I've been what?" Amelia asked, totally in disbelief.
"Starting tomorrow, for three days." Willow sighed. "And, you didn't finish your initiation."
"I didn't?" Amelia was close to sobbing.
"No, you did about eight and a half before you started flip out, according to them." Willow rehashed.
"What are they going to do?" Amelia asked getting angry. "They think they can kick me out? They can try-"
"They don't actually have to do anything." Willow sighed. "Because you've been kicked out of Anubis... by Victor."
"No way..." Amelia trailed off. "Those four have done so much worse how did I get kicked out? I was the victim!"
"Well Victor said he wasn't dealing with another miscreant, but he wasn't the one who actually did it. It was your dad." Willow explained. "Victor contacted him, he's not paying the extra money for you to stay here."
"Wait what?" Amelia asked shocked.
"This morning Victor called Mr. Sweet, who called your dad. After hearing what happened, he decided to pull you out of Anubis. He believes it's a bad influence, because you didn't do anything like it before."
Amelia sighed slowly and quietly and closed her eyes. If there was one force she couldn't go against, it was her dad. "We'll get back in."
"Actually, I'm not out yet!" Willow grinned. "My initiation is tonight!"
Amelia opened her eyes quickly. "You'd be here without me?"
Willow frowned. "I don't know... I guess not."
"Good, because if you would you'd be a horrible friend." Amelia spat.
"I'll still do the initiation though... just to see if I could get in." Willow shrugged. Amelia said nothing. Because, as if Willow could survive this if Amelia couldn't.
Willow met up with the four in Jerome's room around noon. There were no shot glasses, so that was a plus. "Hey guys!"
"Hey," Joy smiled. Patricia rolled her eyes. "Your initiation isn't going to be nearly as bad as Amanilia's. Because we actually like you."
"Well some of us do." Patricia mumbled.
"It's pretty simple, if you're devious enough." Jerome shrugged. "All you have to do is pull a spectacular prank on Mr. Sweet. One that impresses us, and videotape the entire thing. You have until midnight to pull it, and we want to see the footage tomorrow morning."
Simple.
It didn't seem as destructive as Amelia's, but Willow had never pulled a prank in her life. "While you're doing that, Joy and I are going to deal with Mouse." Patricia explained.
So as Willow brainstormed ferociously, the girls went to where Fabian was, in his room, to tell him the rules. His reaction surprised them. They expected that he'd either chicken out, or storm out like Landis did. But instead he said:
"Okay."
Joy and Patricia rose their eyebrows. "Really?" Joy asked.
"I'm not stupid." Fabian reminded him. "Given your history, I know you're perfectly capable of kicking me out of the house if you deem it necessary in your own strange logic. So I'll play your game."
Joy and Patricia looked at each other, somewhat impressed. They saw why Alfie liked him. "Okay, well Alfie will meet you tomorrow in front of the attic door."
"Okay." Fabian shrugged. But his nonchalant demeanor was not to be misunderstood. He understood the situation, and knew fighting it would be futile. But he was angry. He was angry that they thought they ruled the school, which he supposed they did. He shouldn't need to go through what he was about to just to sleep in this house. And that lead him to say things he didn't mean, which made things very difficult for him for a little while.
Willow had done something brilliant. Or at least, she thought it was brilliant. She hoped the others thought so too. She set up the video camera so it was hidden in Mr. Sweets office, and could see everything but could not be seen. She ran from the office, and hoped everything went well.
The next morning, Jerome, Joy, and Patricia went to the room Willow was sleeping in (Amelia's stuff had been packed up the day before and she was now at home with a very angry father). To their surprise, she wasn't there. It was early too, ten in the morning on a Saturday, and she wasn't there. Patricia was ready to call it as a forfeit, but Joy told her to give her a minute. A minute was all she needed, because Willow burst through the door in her pink pajamas nearly fifty seconds later.
"I have it all on video!" Willow panted. "I left it in the office all night so I had to get it this morning, but he was in his office so I had to distract him by telling him I was having an allergic reaction to grapefruit. Of course I wasn't, and when he got the medicine I had to take it so I'm sleepy but now I can't ever eat grapefruits around him!"
Patricia snorted, Joy fell out in laughs as Jerome cackled. Willow was swooning, literally, swooning. The medicine was making her loopy, as it was designed to make the user fall asleep immediately. Once composed, Joy took the video camera and they left Willow's room so she could sleep in peace.
They watched the video, having to fast forward the first part. Mr. Sweet finally entered his office. He went to open a closet door, only to find the closet door was disattached from it's hinges and it fell off. Mr. Sweet's face was priceless, and Patricia howled with laughter.
"She's growing on you isn't she?" Joy smirked at her.
Patricia rolled her eyes. "Like a fungus."
It didn't stop there. He tried to open the file cabinet, but it was glued stuck. Flustered and angry, Mr. Sweet took a seat only to jump up immediately by the loud horn noise that came from the bottom of it. He was so scared by it, he tripped over his feet. Under the chair, he pulled out an air horn. Afraid of what surprises awaited him next, he grumbled and left his office. The next video was also Willow's. Hours later, it was morning and Mr. Sweet hesitantly went back to his office to find everything back to normal, with a note on the table and oreos next to it. He read the note, and then smiled and ate one of the oreos only to spit it out. They had no idea what was in the oreos, but Mr. Sweets reaction was priceless.
An hour later when Willow was awake, the three were anxious to talk to her. "What did the note say?" Patricia asked.
"What was in the oreos?" Jerome asked.
Willow smiled. "The note said, 'Sorry about your office. Have some cookies as an apology.'" she recited. "And I took the icing out of the oreos, and replaced it with toothpaste."
They laughed, and then made disgusted faces. "We're impressed, and Alfie's going to love these." Patricia said. "Congratulations Willow, you've passed your initiation!"
"SQUEE!" Willow yelled, then sighed sadly. "But I can't. I promised Amelia I wouldn't stay here without."
They all looked at each other. Jerome asked, "So why'd you even do it?"
"I just wanted to see if I could get in." Willow shrugged.
"So you wasted our time?" Joy crossed her arms.
"And storage on my camera?" Patricia frowned.
"I'm sorry-"
"No, goodbye." Joy waved her off. "Looks like our conversation was just words to you." Joy shook her head and left for her room. Patricia and Jerome looked at each other, and back at Willow. Then they left her. Willow sighed sadly as she went to begin packing.
While they were doing that, Alfie was walking Fabian to his initiation. "So all you have to do, is stay in the attic for a week. The door won't be locked. If you leave, you fail. We'll make an excuse for why you miss school."
"I'm going to be so behind." Fabian sighed.
Alfie looked at him and shrugged. "I'll come every day, tell you what you missed. It's not a big deal."
"No of course it's not." Fabian spat. "I think I'd be less behind if I didn't get my info from you."
Alfie stopped short. "What does that mean?"
Fabian jumped at Alfie's angry tone but stood his ground, even if he stuttered a bit. "It m-means you and your friends d-don't know what's important. A-All you ever do is worry about who's in the house with you."
"Tell me Fabian, would you want to live in a house with people who annoy you constantly?" Alfie asked. "Of course we care about who we live with! And as for school, if we had something to worry about we'd be worried. But we're fourteen, and we like to have fun."
"School isn't about fun." Fabian shot back.
"No it's about learning, and as long as the work's getting done it shouldn't matter what we do in between." Alfie retaliated.
"Not when it affects someone else's life." Fabian said slowly. Alfie glared.
"Just get in the damn attic." Alfie opened the door, he'd gotten Jerome to pick the lock earlier. Fabian stalked past him and went up the stairs. Alfie closed the door, and bitterly went back to his room.
After Alfie told the others what Fabian said, it didn't take much convincing to get them to help him pay Fabian an early visit in the attic.
On the fifth night, they dressed in all black and went up the stairs as quietly as possible. Fabian sat on the floor reading one of the books that weren't completely creepy using a flashlight. There were plates around him. Of course they left him dinner, they weren't monsters, he'd be fed. four meals a day. Never the good stuff, however. They never fed him what Trudy made, but what they scraped up from the kitchen.
They hid in the shadows, Fabian couldn't see a thing. Then, Patricia spoke in a soft voice that could hardly be heard. "Fabian..."
Fabian jumped. He looked around, but let himself believe he just imagined it. But then Patricia did again, even softer. "Fabian..."
Now Fabian was officially freaked out. Joy covered her mouth so she could hide her laughter, and joined Patricia. "Fabian..."
Fabian got up and glanced around. "FABIAN!" Patricia shrieked loudly, making Fabian jump so hard he fell back down. He scrambled to his feet.
"Leave now!" Jerome yelled. "Leave now or suffer the consequences!"
"The consequences... are most severe." Alfie spoke lowly and darkly.
Fabian looked like he could pee his pants.
"FABIAN LEAVE!"
"RUN! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!"
"LEAVE NOW!"
"SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES!"
"THEY ARE MOST SEVERE!"
"RUN!"
Fabian cowered, shaking worse than a leaf in a storm. Alfie started banging on the walls, which made Fabian whimper and the others cackled and joined Alfie.
"We warned you!" they said in the most sinister voices they could muster. They start throwing books at Fabian, and one hit him and knocked him down. He jumped to his feet and started running down the stairs, but stopped short just of the door when he heard familiar laughter. Behind him, he found Joy, Patricia, Jerome, and Alfie nearly dying of laughter.
"You should have seen your face!" Alfie said while the others laughed.
"What's the matter Fabian? Scared of a little ghost?" Patricia tantalized him and they proceeded to mock him and recount what happened, as if it weren't an incident that happened just seconds ago.
"H-how d-di-did-" Fabian tried so hard to speak, but he wasn't fully out of his terror.
"What was that, Stutter Rutter?" Jerome asked, causing the others to laugh.
"H-how did yo-you get up th-there so quietly?" Fabian finally got out.
"Your teeth were chattering so loud it probably blocked out the sound of us coming up!" Alfie laughed some more. Joy walked down so she was face to face with Fabian. He was cute, but ignorant and prideful and she did not like him, at least for the time being.
"Are you leaving?" Joy asked. "Because if you leave now, you might as well march yourself right down to another house."
Fabian gave her a similar look he gave Alfie just a few days before. "No, I'm staying."
There was very obvious tension around the five of them, as they stared at each other for a quiet, tense moment. It was very obvious to Fabian in that moment, that though they were laughing at him and had the same expressions they had with every other prank they did, they were really angry. Their faces in that small moment, looked determinedly vengeful. But screw them, because Fabian was stuck in an attic for a week with nasty food and nothing but books for company, and being scared shitless.
Trudy's voice was what broke the moment, as she called them for supper. Suddenly, the looks were replaced with the ones they always wore, the laughing pranking ones.
"Now we have to go, the food is calling our names." Alfie smirked.
"You look hungry." Patricia said, sounding almost like Trudy.
"We'll be sure to bring you back some food." Jerome smiled. But he was lying. Fabian had already gotten his pb&j. Joy slipped by him, being followed closely by Patricia. She shoved into his shoulder on the way out. Jerome glared at him as he pushed past Fabian with such force it actually knocked Fabian down. Alfie stepped over him and gave him one last look and shut the door.
I don't usually make A/N in the middle of a chapter anymore, but this is where I probably should have ended the chapter. Instead, you get even more!
A turn of events
In their opinion, it was unfortunate that Fabian passed his initiation. Things were still not great between them all, but for now Fabian's spot was secure. Mr. Sweet had to round up another group of kids, but this time only three new students. So... progress.
Joy was trying very hard to stay angry at Fabian, what he said was rude after all, but she found herself getting lost in those eyes. Those big brown eyes...
But she wasn't the only one hit with a sudden crush. Because the reaction Jerome, Patricia, and Alfie had to the three students who came next was extremely unexpected to them. The only boy in the bunch was tall with shaggy brown hair and a mischievous smirk. Next to him was a girl who looked very similarly to Joy. They were about the same height, and both had tan skin and brown hair. The last girl hid behind thick framed glasses and pulled her dirty blonde hair into a long braid. She was probably used to not being noticed.
"Hi sweeties!" Trudy said in her ever chipper voice. "Everyone's here! Great!"
Fabian was at the dinner table, so he wasn't with the other four but he was still there.
"Alright, everyone, let's all get together on the couch and-"
"Oh good Lord Trudy we're not about to play another game, are we?" Jerome asked.
"No." Trudy said as she sat. "We're just going to introduce ourselves. We won't be doing the partnering again..."
"Good." Joy said. Although when she looked at the other three, they all seemed kind of... disappointed.
"So I'm Trudy! I'll be your house mother while you're here!" Trudy smiled at them.
"But probably not for long." Joy muttered loud enough for just her friends. They laughed, but it seemed half hearted.
"I'm Kel." said the shaggy brown haired boy Patricia couldn't stop looking at.
"I'm Lauren." said the girl with the similar look to Joy.
"Amber." said the quiet girl with the thick glasses. Trudy smiled and looked at the rest.
"My name's Alfie." Alfie smiled at Amber.
"Jerome." He gave Lauren a smirk.
"I'm Patricia." Patricia said in a nonchalant voice, but it still didn't sound the same.
"...Joy." she said eyeing her friends.
"My name is Fabian." the boy smiled and Joy looked at her knees.
"Great, now that we all know each other's names-" Trudy began.
"We could... show them around..." Jerome suggested. "Give them a tour of the house?"
Joy, Fabian, and Trudy all rose their eyebrows. "I... suppose..."
Jerome and Alfie quickly went to Lauren and Amber, who smiled at the boys. That's when Joy understood. Kel looked at Patricia and winked, Patricia scoffed.
"I guess you can come with me." she rolled her eyes. That left Joy, Trudy, and Fabian in the living room. Once Trudy was over her initial shock, she smiled.
"Well, I think times are changing in Anubis House. If you need me I'll be in the kitchen."
Trudy walked off, and Fabian and Joy sat awkwardly. Fabian cleared his throat. "Um... hey. Joy."
Joy gave him a small wave.
"I uh..." Fabian sighed. He'd been trying to find the right time to apologize to them all. He didn't mean what he said, he was just angry. Of course he had the right to be, but he thought he may have really hurt their feelings. And once you got over their unapproachable and cruel demeanor, they were just four teenagers like himself. "I wanted to... speak."
"You are speaking." Joy said, trying to sound like she still couldn't stand the sight of him.
"I'm sorry... is what I'm trying to say." Fabian frowned. "I didn't mean what I said, I was just upset."
Joy blinked at him, and looked him up and down. "Yeah I'm sure you're sorry. Truthfully, I'm over it. If you say that to Alfie too, he'll probably forgive you." Joy shrugged. "It's the other two who hold a grudge."
Fabian nodded. "I mean I get it." he said. "I quite enjoyed having my own room, and now I have to share with Kile."
"I think his name is Kel." Joy laughed.
"Well, he probably won't be here long with you four here." Fabian said. Joy shrugged.
"I don't know if we're in the same situation as before." Joy stared at the doorway.
Amber smiled to herself as she walked in her room, where Lauren was already unpacking. "I don't know why everyone says the people here are so awful. They're so sweet!" Amber smiled. "Alfie even offered to have lunch with me!"
"They're not sweet." Lauren said. "You're Amber right? I'm Lauren."
"I remember." Amber said pulling her luggage in and sitting on her bed. "What do you mean?"
"Odds are they're just as awful as everyone says." Lauren said. "But people change when they develop crushes."
Amber crinkled her eyebrows. "Crushes?"
Lauren chuckled. "Alfie likes you. And that lunch is most definitely a date."
"A date?" Amber repeated. "A date! I've never been on a date before!"
Lauren smiled at her. "Well, I can help you. You're really pretty you know."
Amber smiled. "Thank you."
"Have you ever considered contacts? Those glasses basically hide your face." Lauren said. "And is that braid holding your head up?"
Amber sunk low on her bed. "No."
"I'm not trying to make you feel bad, I'm just saying... there's no harm in adding a little color to your wardrobe. And lipgloss is a girls best friend. If you let me, I could totally remake you."
Amber looked uncertainly at her feet and shrugged, which Lauren took as a yes.
"Come on, Alfie." Jerome rolled his eyes. "You have three hot girls in this house and the one you choose to target is Amber?"
Alfie sighed. "Okay so maybe she's not 'hot'. But I think she's really pretty."
"You can't even see her face behind those glasses. Alfie, buddy." Jerome looked at his smaller friend. "You're a king, like yours truley. You could probably have any girl in your grade, apart from Joy and Patricia."
"I'll stick with Amber." Alfie rolled his eyes. "And you keep on with Lauren. I'm sure you'll make a lovely couple."
"Couple?" Jerome asked. "Who's looking to date?"
"What else do you want to-" Jerome gave Alfie a sly smirk. "Oh."
Jerome and Joy had lost their virginities two months ago, and though Joy didn't change much, Jerome became an even bigger douche than he already was. "Don't worry Alfie, soon you'll understand."
That was actually very true, as Alfie lost his virginity less than a month later to a girl named Victoria, even though he didn't tell anyone because he thought it sucked. But that wasn't important at the moment.
"Well we'll see won't we?" Alfie sighed.
As Joy sat on her bed reading a book she stole from Jerome, she realized something. For the first time since Jerome and Patricia came to the house, Joy felt lonely. It wasn't like she just hung around Jerome and Alfie all day, that's why she had Patricia. But Patricia had been avoiding the new guy Kel, yet finding it impossible to get away from him. Patricia was crushing hard.
Joy's thoughts were interrupted by a knock on the door. "Come in."
Lauren's head popped in. "Everyone else is out and I'm bored and lonely." she tentatively came in. "I hear you're not very welcoming, but maybe you'd want to hang out?"
Joy looked her up and down and shrugged. "I was about to watch a movie."
"What movie?" Lauren asked as she moved farther into the room.
"I don't know." Joy shrugged. "Maybe Twilight?"
Lauren smiled slowly. "I love Twilight."
Joy looked up suddenly excited. Everyone else made fun of her for liking movies about vampires that sparkled and werewolves who never wore shirts. "Team Edward or Team Jacob?"
"Definitely Team Jacob!" Lauren grinned.
Joy's jaw dropped. "But Bella and Edward-"
"Jacob is hot." Lauren said fanning herself. "I don't care who Bella's with my favorite part of the movie are that boy's abs."
Joy snorted as she put the dvd into her laptop. "You can sit on the bed."
Lauren climbed on the bed and Joy set the laptop up at the food to the bed so that it was seen by both of them.
About an hour later, after Lauren and Joy were immersed in sparkles and abs, Patricia stormed in looked flustered and angry. "That Kel is the lowest and foulest human being on the earth!"
Joy and Lauren looked at each other. "Wow." Lauren said. "You're kind of in love with him."
Patricia flushed but managed to look taken aback and annoyed. "No I am not!"
"I don't blame you." Lauren shrugged. "He's hot."
"C'mon Patricia, everyone knows it." Joy rolled her eyes. "It's obvious."
Patricia sighed. "Okay so maybe he's a kind of cute." She said. "But I don't want to be his girlfriend or anything like that."
"Yeah, we'll see." Joy and Lauren giggled. Patricia scoffed and left the room, running right into Fabian.
"Oh Patricia, I was coming here to find you." Fabian said. "I'd like to apologize."
Patricia's eyebrows went up. "You think an apology would make it all better?"
"Truthfully, not entirely." Fabian admitted. "I apologized to Joy and Alfie and Jerome. They forgave me, though Jerome was a little bit hesitant."
"Well I'm not them." Patricia reminded him as she walked past him. When she found Jerome and Alfie.
"I ran into Fabian and he told me that you guys-" Patricia said immediately.
"Forgave him." Jerome shrugged. "It wasn't the worse thing that's been said to me."
"But he's such a little rodent!"
"Patricia you just like to hold a grudge." Alfie shrugged. Patricia glared at him.
"I do not!" she crossed her arms.
"Yeah, you do." Jerome said. "And you're proving it now. Fabian's afraid of his own shadow. I'm impressed he had the balls to say what he said."
Patricia sighed. "Fine whatever."
At lunch the next day, neither Alfie nor Jerome were prepared for the girl that came down the stairs. There Jerome was at the bottom of the stairs, trying to convince Alfie that Amber was not worth having lunch with and that there was still time to back out of it, when Amber Millington came down the stairs. The girl who hid behind her glasses and sunk into her vomit colored sweaters was completely unrecognizable. Her brownish-blonde hair was combed out and surrounding her round face, and she wore a light purple dress along with silver ballet slippers. She kind of felt like a princess.
"Wow." Alfie's eyes sparkled.
"I take back everything." Jerome whispered in Alfie's ear as he walked away while gently pushing him towards Amber. Amber and Alfie smiled at each other as Alfie lead her outside.
The Fearsome Five?
For the first time, it seemed that the people in the Anubis House were staying in the Anubis House. Lauren was close to Joy, and now good friends with Jerome and Alfie. Patricia had no problems with her. Joy and Fabian seemed to be getting closer. Amber and Alfie seemed like they may become a couple. The only problem was, Amber was putting more and more time into the way she looked, and with each headband and pretty dress she bought the more other boys took interest. Even Jerome. And with boys taking more interest in her, she was very obviously pleased with the attention. Alfie started to have the feeling that she was slipping out of his fingers.
While Amber was talking to some boy, Fabian was alone in his room, and Kel did whatever he did, (which was usually make girls fawn over him), the original four spent a lot of time together. And to some people's surprise, Lauren was often with them. Things were calm at Anubis House. With Joy's persuasion, Patricia was going to go on her first date.
"This wasn't even my idea." Patricia groaned. "I'm not getting dressed up for him."
"Lauren it's so obvious." Joy giggled as she and Lauren raided Patricia's closet for the perfect outfit. "She's so excited."
"Definitely." Lauren smiled as she pulled out a red tank top. "This and a black mini skirt-"
"Look, I agreed to go on this stupid date or whatever, but I'm wearing what I have on." Patricia told them. "Now leave me alone."
"Right." Lauren said to Joy. "Let her squeal in private so she can continue to act like she doesn't care later."
"Patricia Williamson doesn't squeal." Patricia sneered. Joy and Lauren rolled their eyes and left. Patricia sighed and smiled to herself.
Lauren and Joy walked down the steps arm and arm down to the kitchen to get snacks for their movie marathon later. Joy and Lauren had been having such a good time together over the past month that she almost felt guilty because she'd hardly been hanging with her other three friends. It was just that she felt like she found her actual friend soulmate, or non biological twin sister. Amber came down seconds later looking very fancy.
"Hey Amber." Lauren greeted her. "You going on a date with Alfie?"
Amber rose her eyebrows. "No..." she grabbed her bag and started walking to the door. "I'm going to the hair salon."
"In that?" Joy asked. "Is it with the queen?"
"I just like to look good is all." Amber shrugged. "Y'know... Alfie's sweet but I personally don't think things will go further for us."
Joy didn't like the sounds of that. Alfie really wanted something to happen between him and Amber. "Does he know that?"
"Well if he doesn't he will. I'm going to talk to him later." Amber shrugged.
"But," Joy began. "He really likes you. And you were so happy about that before."
"I'm still happy about that, and I like him too." Amber started. "It's just-"
"There are now more options to consider." Lauren finished for her. "There's no shame in wanting to try everything at the buffet."
"Exactly." Amber shrugged as she opened the door. "What do you feel about me being blonde?"
"Blonde?" Joy repeated. "Aren't you already blonde?"
"Blonder." she said looking in the mirror. "I'm going to try it out."
Joy watched the door behind Amber close and shook her head. "You've created a monster."
"I don't think so." Lauren said.
"When she didn't have contacts and she stumbled into school because she didn't want to be seen in her glasses." Joy recounted. "If that's not bad, I don't know what is."
Lauren simply shrugged.
"Okay, I'm going." Patricia waved to Joy who was sitting alone in the living room hours later. "Where's Lauren?"
"She went to the school because she forgot her history binder and we were about to do homework. Why aren't you and Kel just going to the movies together?"
"Well we're going to meet each other right outside of school." Patricia explained. "He has football practice."
"Ahh. Well have fun!" Joy smiled. Patricia scoffed.
"I'll just try to get through it." Patricia rolled her eyes. "Also, I got a text from Amber. Apparently Alfie's phone's dead but she wants to talk to him and she asked me to tell him to meet her outside in fifteen minutes. But I forgot and that was twelve minutes ago and I have to go so can you tell him?"
Joy's stomach dropped. "Yeah. Sure."
Patricia nodded and she left as Joy got up and knocked on the boy's doors. Jerome opened. They were really getting tall. Jerome, who used to be about the same height as her, and was now at least three inches taller than her, opened the door. And she had to look up to Alfie, who used to be about three feet tall.
"Yes princess?" Jerome smirked at her.
"Tell Alfie that Amber wants to talk to him." Joy said to Jerome. Jerome gave a suggestive smile. "It's not a good thing."
Jerome furrowed his eyebrows and nodded and disappeared. Seconds later Alfie came out and went outside. Amber was just a few feet outside of the door. Her hair was much blonder and curled down her back.
"Your hair..." Alfie said, surprised.
"Alfie, what would you say if I told you I wanted to... just be friends?" Amber asked. Alfie stared at her, as if translating her words in his mind.
"Wait, what?" Alfie finally said. "Amber it kind of sounds like you're breaking up with me. Which would be funny because we were never officially together."
Amber shrugged. "I just don't think you and I are compatible."
"Amber do you see a ring on your finger?" Alfie asked her. As Amber looked at her hand, she realized she definitely didn't have enough rings. "Like I said, we were never actually together. Do whatever you want."
Amber was taken aback. "You're not upset?"
"Am I upset that you'd rather be with one of the many other guys chasing after you because of your new look, rather than the only one who paid attention to you when you first got here? Yeah I'm a little sad. But whatever right? Have fun with your boyfriends and come back to me when you want someone who actually appreciates you for you."
Amber felt Alfie's cold words more than the wind and shivered. "But we can still be friends right?"
Alfie shrugged. "Sure. I don't care."
Amber grimaced as Alfie began to walk away from the house. Neither of them knew where he was going, but he kept walking. Amber stared at him and sighed as she began to make her way to the house. As he distanced himself from his home, Alfie felt his heart ache. He was so upset he didn't notice the girl in front of him and ran right into her.
"Oh Jesus!" he said helping her up. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine." She had light brown skin, light brown hair, and green eyes. She was very pretty, and about his age. "It's partially my fault, I wasn't paying attention."
"Neither was I." Alfies said. "I guess I have a lot on my mind."
"Aren't you cold?" the girl asked. "It's freezing out here! You're not even wearing a jacket."
"I'm a little cold I guess." he shrugged. "I'm Alfie, by the way."
"Oh, one of the ones from Anubis." she recognized. "I live in a house with Landis, he says you're a freak. And that you're as awful as everyone else.
"I might be." Alfie smiled. "You can tell him the ashes of my deceased father, were powdered candy."
The girl broke into a fit of laughter. "I'll be sure to."
"I never got your name." Alfie reminded her.
"Oh, I'm Victoria." she informed her, giving him a smile that he returned.
Joy was rudely awoken around eight by a door slamming shut and Patricia storming in. "He stood me up."
Joy sat up quickly. "Seriously?"
"I knew going on this date was a bad idea." Patricia said stripping off her layers and walking to the laundry room. "I stood there for an hour before I realized that I had some self respect. So I just-"
She stopped talking as she opened the laundry room door. It was so sudden that Joy had to get up and go just to make sure Patricia hadn't disappeared. What she saw was Kel and Lauren looking very sheepish. "Oh my God, Were you two just-"
"Snogging their brains out." Patricia finished with a disgusted face as she went up the steps to her room.
"Wow." Joy said to Lauren. "Here I was thinking you fell in a ditch but actually you fell on his lips!"
"Look, Joy." Lauren sighed. "It's not a big deal. When I got back you were sleeping and I ran into Kel."
"Yeah, I came back here to get some clean clothes and she came back here and it just happened." Kel explained.
"It just happened!" Joy repeated. "You stood her up and you're not even sorry! Wow GOD please leave."
Kel looked between the two girls and backed into the hallway where the other guys were looking at him. All of his stuff was in piles in from of him along with a suitcase on top of it all.
"Even I wouldn't stand a girl up." Jerome crossed his arms. "You have two minutes to pack your stuff and go."
Fabian sighed and shook his head. "I'll tell Victor you decided to go."
Lauren rolled her eyes. "Look, we have two hours before we have to get to bed, we can still get started on our homework."
"Lauren how are you so nonchalant about this?" Joy asked.
"I just don't think it's that big of a deal!"
"You could have ANYONE and you chose the guy who was about to go on a date with your friend? And it's not a big deal!?"
"If it's any consolation I don't consider her my friend." Lauren said. "I mean she's okay I guess-"
"Patricia Williamson is the funniest, smartest, and most amazing girl I know!" Joy yelled at Lauren as they heard Kel roll his things out of the house. "You are scum! You're the most disgusting girl I know!"
"Oh really?" Lauren asked. "Wow, tell me how you really feel."
"You don't want me to." Joy spat at her. "If you had any brains at all you'd leave."
Lauren sighed. "And here I thought I found a real friend."
Lauren grudgingly went up the steps to pack her things, Joy went up the steps to check on Patricia. She was on her bed, reading a book.
"I'm fine." she said immediately.
"I'm positive you're not." Joy sat on the bed. "Look, I understand not wanting to show how you truly feel. And feel free to do that with everyone else. But not me."
Patricia looked at Joy. "I thought it was going to go somewhere."
"Well to be perfectly honest I'm glad it didn't. He was so below the standards that I have for you." Joy said. "It's good we found out now that he was a-"
"Low life, big headed, dickwad." Patricia finished. "He was cute though."
"Very cute." Joy shrugged. "Not as cute as you."
Patricia looked at her sideways. "You sound like a lesbian."
"Well best friends are supposed to be a little lesbian." Joy winked at her. "Everything but the kissing."
"But we made out before." Patricia challenged.
"That's right... Truth or dare." Joy thought. "Well then I guess we're going to have to stop chasing after boys and start just worrying about each other."
Patricia smiled. "I'm okay with that."
Joy smiled.
"So I'm really your best friend?" Patricia asked hesitantly. They'd never actually said it. Joy rolled her eyes.
"No, we're lesbian lovers now. Remember?" Joy joked and Patricia laughed. "Yeah. You are my best friend."
"Good." Patricia laid on her back and stared at the ceiling, leaving room for Joy to do the same. They laid down in silence until they fell asleep.
