First of all, I'm really sorry I disappeared on you... Life got in the way but good news, guys, I'm back and I'm ready to continue my little story if you're still here to follow... As usual, you can contact me if you have any suggestions, comments or anything else, enjoy !
He does not go home that night and he does not even regret it. He should be ashamed about that, about all these feelings he has and cannot control... Yet, shame is not a part of what he is feeling right now. Adam is mostly concerned about the welfare of Kim Burgess. She sleeps all night long while Ruzek opens his eyes three or four times during the night, smiling at her before closing his eyes again.
The day comes and he finally wakes up, a shy smile at the corner of his lips when he finds Kim sound asleep. He rises up from his chair and simply looks at the woman he almost lost yesterday night. He wishes he could kiss her or tell her how much she means to him but his phone rings before he has the chance to do anything. "Ruzek... Yeah, OK. See you in an hour!" He hangs up on Voight, he has to go back to work and something tells him it will not be fine... Not for a while, at least..
When he opens the door, he feels he will not like what he has to saw and he is right. The flat is messy and when he looks most closely at all the things lying on the ground, he knows... Yes, Adam knows Wendy is gone. He runs into their bedroom and sees an empty shelf, not a dress in sight, not even a memory of her being there. Ruzek finds his phone and dials the number... No fucking answer. He knows she is mad and he would be if he were here but he was the asshole in this story and not her, definitely not her. "Yeah, Wendy, it's me... Call me back, please, I think we have to talk, you know..." He says nothing more and hangs up again, this time on an empty voice-mail and he falls to the ground, his head looking at this mess and all he thinks about is... Will she be okay? Will Kim be fine? He is an asshole for that. He is an asshole for everything, really.
Her body hurts everywhere when she finally awakes, alone in a room she does not recognize at first. Then, the memories come back, floating like a spear above her head. She almost died last night, she has almost been taken away by some criminals but Adam was there, Adam saved her. Now, he is gone apparently but she feels he should be far away from her at this moment, his life is very complicated and she doesn't need that. Finally, someone comes in and she finds Lindsey by her bedside, sitting like nothing happened. "How are you doing, Burgess?" Kim smiles at her, she doesn't even know her that much but she feels like she can trust Erin. "Fine, I guess, for a woman found in a middle of a street with a concussion... Do you have any leads by the way?" Erin says no with her head and Kim feels her stomach ache all of a sudden... Nobody is safe now, they are all at risks. "Do you remember anything about last night?" Kim exhales loudly before searching the answers. "Not really. I was with Adam and... I mean he went to my place and I needed some air so, I went out and I walked like two seconds before someone attacked me. I saw nothing, just three men in a hoodie and a black van, that's about it." Lindsay says nothing about the Adam's part and Kim thanks her for that. "OK, if anything comes back, call me... We will all be at the station working our asses off to find the guys who hurt you. We will not rest before that, Burgess, you're one of us." And Kim smiles, Erin smiles back, then she is gone and Kim feels bad. The danger is everywhere, now.
Adam finds the team silent when he enters the room. Everybody is on the case and he knows he has to give everything he has too... For Burgess. For Justice. "How are you, kid?" Adam turns his head ton find Olinsky by his side, a hand on his shoulder, smiling shyly at him like he always does when there is a crisis around here. "I'm not the one you should be worried about right now... Kim is in the hospital right now, because of me, I just..." He doesn't finish his sentence because Alvin invites him next door and Adam looks at him without truly understanding the message. "Listen to me, you didn't do anything to her. Those men did, those men are after all of us and Kim is the first victim... And if you weren't here, she could have died so do not think for one second caring about her is your mistake. Thank yourself, kid." And with that, he is just gone. Jay is here next and Adam knows why,, he was there, he was a crucial witness to the case. "You don't need to ask your questions, Halstead. It was dark already, I was at Kim's, we had some kind of a fight and she ran away. I felt bad about that so I went after her and she was lying on the ground, I saw the blood and I didn't even think about looking at the car. I'm a fucking cop and I didn't even think about that, damn it!" He just feels the need to hit something so he chooses the shelf and Jay just nods his head, feeling his pain. "That's ok, man, you saved her first, we don't blame you for that... Everybody would have done the same thing... We will find the criminals, trust me." He was about to leave when he turns around. "Because it's you, I have not asked the real question here... But whatever you were doing at Kim's... I hope you know what you have to do, man." Adams looks at him with his puzzled look and he is lost. Once again, he doesn't know the answer to the most important question ever... What does he want? He rings Wendy again but she is still gone, the choice is easy then, right?
Kim is up, dressed and ready to go when he comes into the room. She wants to leave, she wants to be useful to the investigation instead of being locked up in a white room with no fucking windows. "Wow, easy there, woman, you were hit on the head yesterday, remember?" Obviously, she knows it's Adam because she smiles playfully before looking at her with a challenging look. "Yeah and whose fault is that?" She does not mean that, she looks chocked after the words crossed her lips and so is Adam, actually. "About that, I'm... Kim, I'm sorry about last night. You're right, I'm an asshole and because I am, you were hurt in the process... The truth is that... I do not deserve you, Kim. It's just... That, you know." She stays silent, her muscles trembling and she needs to sit so she finds her bed again and she finally looks at him, strong and fierce like the Kim she has always been and that he likes. "You're wrong. You don't know how much you're wrong and how much you deserve the world Adam... It's just nobody ever told you that you were worth it... But, you are and maybe I'm not Wendy and I'm not you future wife but I know you're a good man. You would not be here if you weren't and... I like you for who you are, even if I have no right to..." Her head shakes for a moment and a tear rolls down her cheek, she doesn't care and then, a hand is under her chin and she has to look up, she just has to. His lips are on hers in no time and the world just fades away because she cannot denies her feelings anymore. She will die on the inside if he marries Wendy, if he goes away and never kisses her again with that passion and that tenderness, all these things that defines him, all of him. She will never be over him, never.
