Obi-Wan sighed as he stepped into the hall, Satine and Padme conversing while the one called Luci Tano regaled Quinlan with some obscure tale from her homeland. Ahsoka and Mina stood by, each very weary in appearance, though Ahsoka was the more worn by far. Without saying a word, he observed them a moment before clearing his throat.
The council meeting he'd just witnessed made him all the more regretful he'd been given this assignment.
"I'm afraid we are a bit more pressed for time than usual." he admitted to the room, guards and all, "The council has just alerted me to a serious matter, so I am going to rush through the specifics where I can with this particular snare. It is absolutely critical we catch this man on the first try." Nodding, the team of twelve stepped into a circle, the helmeted guards nearly as stoic as those they served. "The number one caution I want to insist upon is that we don't engage this warrior into a fight if we don't have to. He is impossibly strong."
"Who is he, master?" Ahsoka suddenly wondered. He nodded to her, but chose not to answer her. It's not as though I'm all that certain myself, he mentally admitted.
"Who he is isn't as important as what he is capable of." Obi-Wan insisted, "You will all learn who he is in due time." He then pulled a projector from his pocket, opening the images of the storehouse they were to ambush. "I anticipate our friend to emerge from a panel hidden somewhere in this storehouse. From there, our responsibility is to make sure he gets trapped by our ray shield for questioning. Simple as that."
Crossing her arms, Satine pointed out, "This almost feels too easy." He nodded.
"It generally starts that way."
Leia sighed as she marched up the steps, back into the Jedi temple. She'd lost track of Anakin the night before and was planning to confront him about it the moment she'd tracked him down. The coldness she was sensing in him, his ability to completely vanish from her, his own flesh and blood, was putting her into a state of constant worry. I won't lose him, was now her mantra, especially as she marched down the halls towards his quarters.
To her good fortune, his tall, lean form was just locking the door as she rounded the corner. "Anakin." She called, watching him flinch in frustration. He turned about, his normally ocean blue eyes gray as he glared her down, "Where did you go last night?" Her tone was demanding, motherly even. And clearly he didn't like it.
"Why were you following me?"
As he crossed his arms to stare her down, his presence making her think coldly on his future counterpart, she steeled up. Stepping in closer, she hissed through pressed lips, "Why are you targeting the senators?"
Narrowing his eyes, Anakin leaned her way and growled back at her, "I'm saving the republic."
"According to who?" Leia demanded, hoping her voice wasn't carrying down the halls as they argued, "It's certainly not something mother or I would condone!"
Snorting a laugh, Anakin stepped past her, ignoring the comment completely. With even strides, he moved down the hallways towards the hangar. Then, as if to lose the nimble Leia, he turned and changed direction in favor of the archives. As she ran to keep up with his easy gait, she grabbed his mechanical arm and held on tight, forcing him to slow with her, a tear falling down her cheek. Sensing her sorrow, he stopped and stared down at her.
"Please stop." She pleaded with him, "Please don't become that man." She'd never been one to cry until this mission, when she was forced to face so many buried emotions. Even Luke admitted that dealing with these tough facts about himself brought on more moments of expressed sorrow than he'd like to admit. She liked to think these moments of 'weakness' were merely a cleansing process, but knew better. She was just expressing what she felt at the time: her senatorial mask was breaking.
And Anakin could see clearly how this bothered her.
"Leia." he assured her, "I'm only trying to do what is right." She nodded, acknowledging that.
"I understand." she confessed, "During the rebellion, we did many similar things: we sought out the problem and made it go away, and by whatever means necessary. But," she glanced down at her feet a moment, collecting her mask much as her mother would, "Many lives were lost to this dogma, father. Many souls too… And if Palpatine is the one directing you in this process, even if it was your idea, you need to step away from him."
Sighing, Anakin shook his head and shook her off of his arm. "Do you have any idea who the chancellor really is?"
She nodded, "More than you'll ever know… I am one of his many victims, father." Taking a deep breath, she then added, "As are you."
With eyes wide, he glanced down the halls in both directions, not wanting anyone to hear what he had to say next. The sound of footfalls made it apparent that a class of Younglings was just released, so he took Leia's hand and led her into a free classroom. The room was typically used for training with a lightsaber, and many blaster shields sat on a shelf in the back of the room, practice sabers beneath them.
"The chancellor is the closest thing to a father I've ever had." Anakin explained, his voice urgent, "He's always been there for me, even when Obi-Wan wasn't… Even when Obi-Wan couldn't get past his dislike of me, way back when. He's always had faith in my power, has encouraged it's growth. He sees my potential and wants me to grow into it. I… I could never betray that man."
Gulping, Leia nodded, understanding. "Bail Organa raised me." she suddenly admitted, making Anakin jump and stare at her with his jaw agape. "But… I wonder if his role as my father is anything like what Palpatine has done for you."
A brief, contemplative pause. "What's that supposed to mean?"
Turning to face away from him, knowing she had to be strong to finally reach the man, Leia clenched her fists and dug in. "You say that Palpatine encourages you to grow into your potential… That he's like a father: how do you know Obi-Wan didn't better fit that mold, father? We aren't supposed to like our parents all the time, you know… It's only once we've grown and stood in their place that we can appreciate the sacrifices they've made for us."
Shaking his head, Anakin crossed his arms and stared her down, "Well… Go on, spin your tale."
Again, she flinched and clenched those shaking fists of hers. She was getting angry, something she knew her father could sense. Let him. She decided, Let him know I mean what I say. "Someday soon you'll have to stand over a little boy and a little girl. You'll have to stare them down and tell them they did wrong, only because you want so badly for them to learn from their mistakes. You may even have to scold them, reprimand them… Tell me, has your father Palpatine done these things for you? Or has he spoiled you with sentiment? Inflated your ego to make you think yourself a god?" At that point she turned around, "Those that truly care for us keep us in check father. A Sith isn't capable of such a thing: Palpatine isn't capable of such a thing. He knows only manipulation."
Agasp, Anakin's jaw fell wide. He stepped forward as his mind processed her accusation, "Are you accusing the chancellor of being a Sith?" She said nothing, staring him down simply to prove she meant it. She would not argue truth with a man blinded by lies. With an accusing finger, he told her with malice in his voice, "That's treason!"
And, with that, he stomped out of the room.
Yet, as he was about to pass through the door, Leia pointed out, "Not yet… But when he's emperor of the galaxy, it will be treason."
Anakin said nothing as he fled to wherever he'd originally intended to go. And, just as he turned the corner, a great blue light filled the room. It had been an empty power, a mere echo of an event elsewhere in the galaxy, one leaving Leia collapsed on the floor shortly after. Still, even with her eyes closed, one could see that she was the source of the light.
Luke awoke within the cave, his body still coming down from the immense power he'd forced out of it. It was not damaged as it had been before; if anything, it was growing stronger to handle his new power. Still, he felt ragged. Crawling around on his hands and knees, panting, Luke sought a nearby crystal at just the right height to help himself off the ground. Each movement felt strange.
Stranger still was the sight that awaited him once he took hold of the Kyber crystal he was looking for, his face appearing faintly in the reflective surface, his eyes glowing that same odd blue as Aberash's had before. "What the hell?" he muttered to himself, pulling his left eye wider with his human hand to double check what he was seeing.
"Indeed." Aberash replied from across the room, watching in amusement as Luke finally stood upright. "That was my reaction the first time I discovered a light." He stood up and walked over towards Luke, peering down at his face to observe the odd illumination in his eyes. "You took to this light very quickly. And, with such immense power as yours, I suspect that this luminescence won't fade for days. If you use this light enough times, your eyes might never return to normal."
"Like yours?" Luke wondered.
Smiling, Aberash nodded, his long, braided hair falling over his shoulder. "Indeed." He then stepped past Luke, headed over to the far wall across from where they'd entered. "This isn't a light you can just turn off or on: like Channeling Light, this one can start to self perpetuate rather easily. You may begin to feel too content with the galaxy at large to make many changes to it, that sentiment being what has kept me in this cave for so long. Be very careful. Even as Linus, there is only so much you can do to protect yourself from becoming a true Drajdai."
"Linus?" Luke wondered, stepping closer to the apparition, the crystals beside him glowing a bright blue as he did, "You've called me this before, earlier today."
Smiling, Aberash nodded, "Your presence in the Force matches that of Linus greatly… Though, you indicated earlier you haven't the time to hear this story." Nodding, Luke recalled that.
He was about to open his mouth and ask when a distant voice called out to him, Luke! He blinked, wondering if his ears were imagining things. Luke! He heard once more, his mind bewildered even more so as he recognized clearly who was calling for him, "Mara?"
Stepping past the sage, Luke put his hand on the far wall, feeling the cold of air rushing through the cracks of it. "How is this possible?" he wondered as his flesh hand sought an opening. When he realized he wouldn't find one, Luke stepped back and pushed with the Force: he was surprised when the wall caved so easily, the panel almost disappearing from the pressure as it sped into the hall behind it, crashing distantly. He barely registered pushing on it.
Chuckling behind him forced Luke to turn. "It seems that you are starting to grasp at what your potential really is Skywalker." Aberash complemented. "I sense you've a new mission to attend to: once you've completed your task, return here and I will gladly enlighten you to the history of Linus and Lisam the Duinuogwuin." Nodding, Luke bowed respectfully before stepping through the rubble.
For once, he didn't need a pen light or lantern, his illuminated eyes brightening the dank space up easily. Silky threads from insects old and new fell on his shoulders, reminding Luke of the catacombs under the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and the mural he and Leia discovered before finding their way into the courtyard. The two headed beast flanked by dragons.
His mind wanted to understand the connection. More importantly, because he knew his father to be the chosen one, he wanted to comprehend what that meant for the son and daughter of the chosen one. Were they also to have a destiny, or are we to continue his destiny? Something about that sentiment seemed false now. His narrative was meant to be his own.
Which means I truly am free to be myself, to follow my own path.
As Mara continued to call out to him, her voice getting louder as he turned corner after corner, Luke began to wonder whether time was collapsing on itself. Or have we destroyed time?
Obi-Wan lay on his stomach, resting his head on his elbows as he attempted to demonstrate true patience for the younger ones there. He was rather impressed by Mina, who sat by Ahsoka in meditation. Though, he was twice impressed by Luci, who somehow managed to entertain herself without making a ruckus. Rocking herself as she smiled, lost in some daydream somewhere, she appeared quite pleased with the arrangements.
While he'd sensed that both girls were more than just distant relatives of Ahsoka's, he didn't want to press. Ahsoka was Anakin's Padawan, it wouldn't do for him to interfere in their business. He trusted Anakin far too much to do such a thing.
Though, he sometimes wondered just how mutual that trust really was.
Rather than contemplate the intricacies of their complex brotherhood, Obi-Wan was forced to turn and watch as one of the distant walls was sent soaring across the room. A familiar presence filled the space, sending a chill down his spine that was quickly replaced with a warming sensation, much like the healing feeling he often found with a hot-then-cold muscle pack from the clone first responder kits.
Turning his head, and setting a gentle hand down on Satine's to help her come back from the shock of it all, Obi-Wan observed that one of the ray shields had 'captured' the flying panel of durasteel. He then turned his head back to watch the not so average looking man at an average height step clear from the dust floating in the air and into the large warehouse: Jacen Darklighter.
"Master Luke!" Mina muttered under her breath, covering her mouth as she realized her mistake. This made Obi-Wan's brow furrow a moment, but he shrugged it off so he could focus on obtaining his objective. He even managed to push Padme's outrage from his mind. Fortunately, Quinlan was holding her back, covering her mouth to keep her quiet as they observed the man.
"What the-?" Jacen, no, Luke muttered to himself as he crossed his arms and stared at the ray shield. "What were they guarding here? The bugs?" Shaking his head, he stepped forward, letting his hands rest easily at his side until he stood in the center of the room. "Where are you Mara?"
It was then that Mina spoke up again, this time to tell Ahsoka something Obi-Wan barely heard, "Mara is a friend of Master Skywalker's. She's a Force-sensitive the masters at the temple aren't so sure about yet." When Ahsoka nodded, Obi-Wan's brow rose: clearly there had been a great deal of Padawan/Master miscommunications from Ahsoka all the way to Obi-Wan. The chain was broken, and needlessly so.
They turned back to watch Luke put his ear to the ground, his face showing his focus as his odd eyes cast light rays across the steel floor. Why are his eyes glowing?
Suddenly sure of something, the man stood upright and raised his hand. It appeared he was about to use a Force push, but then stopped himself for some reason. Rather, he closed all his fingers into a fist and then extended his smallest finger on his left hand, pushing the digit down. It was as though he was trying to coach himself into using less power by changing his hand gesture. A panel on the floor cracked abruptly, falling away with a thud and rolling down a flight of hidden stairs. "Are you guys going to help me or just watch?" The man called across the way, "Mina and Luci?" His grin was all knowing, reminding Obi-Wan of Anakin in many ways.
Mina and Luci giggled, springing up from their hideaways and rushing to his side. "Master Luke!" Mina cried, her sister echoing her. Rather than wait, both girls plowed into him, nearly knocking the man off his feet as he wrapped his arms around them, "We've been so worried!"
Luci hopped up and down, assuring him, "The council was going to give up on you! But we Padawans told them not to!"
"And we were right to keep hoping!" Mina insisted, "You're here and you're safe and now we can go and save Zion together!" Luke merely smiled down at them, running and assuring hand down their montrals, much like a father would. It was clear these girls were important to him.
"Thank you for believing in me." He then smiled and added, "And Leia too...I'm sure she'll be pleased to see you once we get back to Coruscant." Both girls nodded respectfully, despite their very eager and youthful smiles. Even stoic Mina was overcome with joy. "Now," Luke wondered, kneeling on one knee to peer down the steps, his electric blue eyes lighting up the hall easily, "Could you explain to me how Mara managed to come back here with you, but is not here with you?"
Blinking as they thought, both girls shook their heads, "It was just us in the room when the weird ball started ticking." Mina insisted, "The ball Zion has now… I'll bet that's our ticket home."
"The Gamragist." Luke nodded in agreement, "That's something we'll need to get a hold of, and soon… But first we need to save Mara." He then turned to all of them with a smile, "I'm sure glad to have backup with this one." Then, with a sure grin, he added, "Though, I'm not quite sure why the Jedi council would target me for capture…"
"It's because we don't understand you, 'Skywalker.'" Quinlan grinned, his arms crossed confidently as he stepped forward, "And you know how the Jedi council is about the misunderstood." Nodding, Luke accepted that answer. "Now, you say this Mara is in danger?"
"She's been calling out to me." Luke said, his gaze now far away.
Obi-Wan nodded, falling into line with his Jedi brethren, "Then we'd best not waste time." Luke allowed him to lead the way, Obi-Wan descending the steps so silently, the wind would be jealous.
At the bottom was a hall, the four surfaces also comprised of durasteel and lit by very old lighting. Despite the obvious age of the passage, it was clear it was used regularly. Very few of the insect webs from before could be seen and the floor had been swept. His feet hardly making a sound, Obi-Wan held his lightsaber in his lead hand as he waved to the rest of their team to descend. Satine surprised him by being at his side first and foremost, Luke the one right behind her.
"I'm glad you're alright." He heard Padme say very quietly to the mysterious man, "I've been worried since you left."
Luke replied in just as kind a tone, "I'm honestly surprised to see you here with just Ahsoka… and now Mina and Luci. Where's Leia?"
Before she could answer, Obi-Wan raised his hand, signalling all to stop and stay silent. A corner had appeared, an intersection between this path and another one. Glancing around that corner, Obi-Wan sighted two medic droids, very new models with glistening silver colored body plates. He watched them interact with one another, one giving the other droid instructions before heading down separate channels. Neither came close to where they were hiding.
Once the way was clear, Obi-Wan dashed ahead, Luke by his side with Ahsoka and Quinlan filing themselves in the halls to defend the remainder from blaster fire while they ran. They were just a little ways behind the droid, the wheeled monstrosity moving at a decent clip down the level passages. Two turns left, one right and suddenly they were inside a very large room.
Cavernous, the ceiling was lined with Kyber crystals, a small catwalk coming close to them in several instances. Large, durasteel beams supported the room, which was filled with sludge covered lab equipment and several droids with many different purposes. Some were trying to clear the sludge from the panels on the machines while others ran tests inside the equipment. In the center of the room was a large vat filled with green and burbling gel. The consistency indicated it was not bacta, making Obi-Wan all the more curious about it. Before it was a man with dark hair.
He turned revealing his curling mustache. "Bradiway?" Satine wondered, surprised by the entire operation, "I always assumed he worked at home."
"Makes you wonder what he's really up to." Obi-Wan pointed out, using the Force to easily drop down one level. He waited patiently for an opening to help those that couldn't use the Force down, Luke doing the same as he kneeled beside the door.
When their whole team was ducking behind several crates stacked under the catwalk, the new question became what to do. Bradiway hadn't left his project and none of the droids seemed poised to retire yet either.
As they watched, however, something surprising soon came into view. From a distant doorway paraded several droid commandos, them preceding a very familiar cloaked figure. "General Grievous." Obi-Wan spat under his breath, "It figures he'd be here. We never manage to stumble onto something small." Yet, he wasn't alone, as Pre Vizsla strode in beside him, flanked by several of his own guard. The man had his helmet off, his buzzed, light hair close to his head as he scowled about the room.
Satine gasped, covering her mouth as Padme grasped her hand in comfort, knowing full well what this man meant to all of Mandalore; Satine most of all. "Bradiway is a trusted friend." She mumbled to herself more than anyone, "To think he'd side with Death Watch is… well.."
"Sir Bradiway!" Grievous greeted in his usual, gravelly voice, "Glad to see your project is coming along so well." Turning about, the man smiled and nodded.
"A recent happenstance of fortune pushed my work's timeline up months," he admitted, "much to my joy." He then stepped away and headed towards some large crates. Opening them, he revealed its contents to his guests. He then glanced up towards Vizsla, his brow raised, "I notice one of your usual guard is missing."
"Medical leave." he sighed, "Well, the equivalent of one when you're a part of such a notorious group." Bradiway chuckled a bit, opening the next crate.
By this point, all the crates were open, each leader inspecting their own supplies carefully. While those observing couldn't see what was in the crates, it was clear that the value of the items was immense. "Excellent." Grievous complemented, waving that his own entourage collect the items and begin loading them.
"Indeed." Vizsla replied with a small grin. "Most impressive designs. These trackers will serve us well. The traps as well."
Nodding, Bradiway inquired, "And for my fee?"
Smiling, Vizsla and Grievous both produced a small glass orb each. "The Blue Shadow Virus." Grievous explained, "As it was recreated on Naboo and as we've modified it since… For your usage." Smiling, Bradiway collected the orbs and then plugged them into the large, vat-encasing machine. "May I ask what you're attempting to create?"
"Perfection." Was all he offered, before turning around and tilting his head with a grin, "And who, might I ask, are you hunting: this is clearly no small bounty."
Nodding, Vizsla chuckled and shrugged, "Count Dooku has the strangest ideas at times. He insists that neither of us are equipped to catch a phantom: a pair of time travelers by the names of Luke and Leia Skywalker." Obi-Wan heard a gasp, but was surprised to not hear it from Luke. Rather, his own stunned mind was trapped in attempting to understand what his ears had detected.
Wearily, he turned to find Padme covering her mouth in shock and worry, Ahsoka looking determined beside her. And Luke: he didn't seem phased by the comment at all.
So he is from the future. Obi-Wan realized with a grimace, Interesting. Not sure how the council will handle this tidbit of information.
"Time travelers?" Bradiway echoed, appearing amused, "Skywalker?... You mean that blond general who's crazy, right? The tall one who keeps winning all those should-be losses?"
"One and the same." Grievous confessed, "Though," he turned towards Vizsla with clear irritation in his voice, "This information was to be kept quiet. Count Dooku will not be pleased."
Shaking his head, Vizsla admitted, "It's just too bizarre to believe."
"Just wait until you have to fight them." Grievous retorted, crossing his arms, "I'm amazed I walked away from my last fight against them. I've never seen someone move so fast or so harmoniously." His thoughts were clearly in the distance, "Frankly, I don't expect Death Watch to survive this encounter. The Skywalkers and that Padawan Tano are far too efficient together."
"So we pick them off one by one." Vizsla pointed out.
"Sounds fair to me." Luke suddenly said, standing by the door they'd entered by. Stunned, Obi-Wan glanced over towards Luke, finding him still in his place and concentrating. A Force illusion? Obi-Wan marveled once more, still trying to understand a man with such masteries. Beside him, Mina and Luci chuckled quietly, clearly amused by the show before them.
"Skywalker!" Grievous shouted, drawing his two lightsabers from their holsters, "How did you find us?" Luke merely grinned and shrugged.
"Dumb luck, mostly."
"Regardless," Vizsla replied, drawing on his own black-bladed lightsaber. "He's not leaving this place alive."
Suddenly afraid, Bradiway extended his arms in defense of his machines, "Not here!" he demanded, "I can't afford to start over!"
"Fair enough." Phantom Luke nodded to the side, turning and bolting down the hall the enemy had entered from, "Catch me if you can!" he teased. The team watched in awe as the entirety of resistance and separatist forces took off after him, save for two droids that Obi-Wan made quick work of.
Stunned, Bradiway turned to him and continued to defend his large project. Throwing his body over the control panel, he gasped at the sight of the blue lightsaber in Obi-Wan's hand "Please!" he begged.
Rather than address him, Obi-Wan turned to Luke, "We don't have much time until your illusion no longer distracts our enemies." Nodding, Luke turned towards the large vat, curiosity in his eyes.
As Satine stepped forward, however, Bradiway's attitude changed. His jaw fell agape as he stared into her angry eyes, his lower lip quivering as he fell to his knees. "Satine!" he pleaded, grasping her tunic, "Please, you must let me continue my work!"
"And why should I?" She spat, "This is clearly an illegal operation!"
Nodding, Bradiway didn't fight the allegation. Rather, he attempted to justify his work. "This was all for you! All for your happiness and the people of Mandelore!"
"What makes you think seeing my friends trade with my enemies, seeing them disregard official sanctions, would make me happy?"
As Bradiway stuttered, Luke stepped forward with the answer, he resting his hand gently on the glass of the green-fluid filled vat. "She won't be ready for many years, will she?" Luke wondered aloud, "Your creation?"
Turning to him, Bradiway confessed, "There are too many variables to adjust her to. Too many toxins, poisons, diseases to build antibodies for."
"And what exactly are you creating?!" Satine demanded, forcing Bradiway to whimper that much more.
"Y-your daughter."
There was no response from Satine, so he continued his explanation, his voice low, but quick. "I've watched over you for years Satine, seeing all the great love you have to offer all the people of Mandalore. But, one day, I realized you'd never allow that love into your own home: you'd never take on a family. Your life was too dangerous: chaotic, even. You'd view yourself as a trigger for danger!" Standing up, he moved towards his machine, pulling up the specific information about the project inside the green ooze.
"This fact also would rob the people of Mandalore." he pointed out, "While Corky might rise to lead as you do, Dutchess, nothing can replace the effectiveness of being raised by benevolence. So… Covertly, I began crafting a child, a girl, that could withstand all attacks on you: deathwatch couldn't kill her by poison or plague. And… Thanks to Obi-Wan Kenobi, here, she'll likely have the Force watching over her too."
While all eyes widened at the revealed information, only one spoke. Luke could only mutter "Shit." as reality checked in with him. He then laughed and shook his head, "Shit."
"And I suppose you know her, Mr. Future-Man?" Obi-Wan spat, suddenly most upset at the new variety of questions he was faced with.
"Sorta dating her." Luke admitted sheepishly, "...Unknowingly." Beside him, Luci and Mina chuckled a little, making the man blush a little as he shook his head. With a deep sigh, he walked past Obi-Wan towards the door their enemies had run through, smiling at the two Jedi Masters. "Coming?"
Author's Note: That chapter wound up being a bit more comedic than I expected, but Luke seems to have changed after attaining these lights, so perhaps that is why. To me, his burdens seem lifted. What about you? You all know how much I love feedback.
I know that last scene felt rushed, but it seemed to fit best there considering what's coming next. In some ways, I feel this bit with Mara doesn't entirely fit into the story, but, at the same time, I had to ask myself the question: what would really push Obi-Wan to be understanding of Anakin's situation? The only answer I could come to was experiencing it first hand. Perhaps I'm wrong about that, feel free to let me know what you think.
Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about this story :) I've just been a bit inundated as of late. Two of my beloved pets have been very sick most of the past year and keeping them well has been a physical and emotional drain. Because of this, sitting down with a clear vision of what comes next in this story has been challenging, but I do intend to finish it. It just might take a lot longer than originally planned. Thank you for sticking with me on this journey despite this.
Please don't forget to review! I look forward to hearing from you!
