Shadow growled inwardly and sighed as he was pulled by Sonic. He would be home right now if that bat hadn't gotten trapped, but she exclaimed that she had new information. And that surprised both hedgehogs. What surprised them even more is that she said she possibly might know who the killer is. But how could that be possible?
Red eyes glanced at the old lab. Dust floated down everywhere and the lights barely worked, flickering every once in awhile. They glanced at Rouge, the white fur standing out from the dark colors.
"Hello boys," Rouge smirked," Long time no see, hadn't seen you two without having to split you up."
"Oh, well later," Sonic smiled back, having his back lean on a tall dusty table," What did you find out?"
"A lot, and some I wish I hadn't found out," Rouge looked down, wings twitching nervously," The killer always leaves claw marks and, of course, the body, but other than that nothing. No other evidence that can link with anyone."
"We know, we've been working on this mission for a while." Shadow said, and then asked," What about the killer? You said you might know him."
"You know who it is," Rouge said, "You've met him before."
"I have?" Shadow said, quite surprised, at the same time as Sonic said," You have?"
"Yes, that demon," Rouge said and gestured with her hands," You gotta know who he is now."
"Mephiles," The word slipped out in a his from Shadow's lips, poison coating that single word.
"Other news: before you get killed," Rouge continued," you hear voices. Some people have came in and said they have heard them when no one else has, but we think they are insane and escort them out. Days later we find them dead in their homes or in another place."
"Well," Sonic shrugged, standing straight up and brushing himself off," I haven't heard any voices."
"Me either," Shadow tensed, but he didn't want them to worry so maybe he should just stay quiet. Just for now at least.
"How do you know it's Mephiles?" Sonic asked.
"I don't, however the commander says it's him, that he had captured him on footage," Rouge rolled her eyes," I think he's lying, but if it's true, Mephiles still has your form."
Rouge nodded toward Shadow, who snarled slightly.
"Says a lot," Sonic said," Maybe he can disguise himself as other people?"
"Possibly," Rouge said,"We had tried to find a lead, but he just seems to strike at random."
"We have to figure something out," Sonic muttered.
"We'll figure out tomorrow," Shadow said," I'll find out some more information."
"How?" Sonic asked.
"Him again?" Rouge said,"I thought he left."
"He...he is more annoyed by the deaths, than anybody else." Shadow said, ignoring the confused hedgehog by his side.
And without further notice, he yelled out his most famous two words.

"Tails!" Sonic grinned, jumping off the roof and landing right in front of the door," I'm home!"
"Sonic?" Tails yelled probably from his work shop," Sonic?"
"Yeah?"
"Did you get the stuff I ordered?" Tails' voice yelled out, muffled by the walls.
The blue hedgehog froze and silently cursed himself, slowly walking backward out the door.
"Uh, I'll be back!" Sonic said and suddenly turned, running toward the city.
Moments later, Sonic appeared at the door again, this time with the needed material. He called out to Tails, who had patiently waited, and handed over the supplies. Tails took it and walked back to his workshop.
"I need this for the plane," Tails said,"and I want to hurry up and finish it, in case we need it soon."
"I know," Sonic replied, shaking his head,"Egghead controlled the plane, not me."
Sonic sighed, and sunk down next to Tails, who happily exclaimed what he was doing.
I wonder if Shadow found out more about the mission.
He waited for Tails to stop talking, briefly looked at the phone, and then snatched it up, dialing the number.

Shadow laid down on bed, relaxing. Well, as much as one can while pounding music and screams were just a room away. His ears twitched as the door opened and turned to face the person who walked in.
"Is it him?" Shadow asked without thinking and shut his mouth.
"If by him, you mean Sonic, than yes," Rouge handed over the phone," I'll be right here." and sat in a chair near the bed.
Shadow pressed it up against his ear, eyes glaring holes into the ceiling.
"What do you want Faker?" Shadow asked.
"A dance party, but sadly I can't convince Tails," Sonic's sarcastic voice rang out,"The mission, duh."
"Why not later," Shadow growled out and shifted on the bed, Rouge smiling at that.
"Did he even come by with the goodies?" Rouge asked.
"Yes, he did," Shadow nodded toward a pile of files," Faker, as much as I love talking to you, how about later?"
"..I just don't want anymore people killed." Sonic answered, so softly that Shadow having to strain his ears just to hear.
"Okay, fine," Shadow sighed, grabbing the files and scanning through them," Nothing, except this. It says, 'The people aren't so innocent. I've done some research and found out that the people Mephiles might be killing have done some weird stuff.' and that's is just how he ends it."
"He?"
"Other than that, nothing worth noting," Shadow said," Anything else? Or can I go rest in peace?"
"Um..." Sonic hummed through the phone"What time are we gonna meet up tomorrow?"
"At 3," Shadow plainly said,"Like usual."
"Might be later," Rouge said, looking through the files herself.
"Or might be later," Shadow corrected himself.
"Oh, okay," Shadow could feel the awkwardness," Later I guess."
And Shadow hung up the phone.

Fast forward to the next day, Sonic, Shadow, Rouge, the commander, and a few other people were in the headquarters. In Sonics opinion, if Mephiles was the one truly causing this, it wasn't going to be easy to find him at all.
And even Shadow knew that.
Of course, in the end they didn't know where to start and ended up walking home.
"Hey," Sonic poked Shadows shoulder," Why don't we talk more a my place?"
"Faker...I'm not sure if I can make it," Shadow raised his brow.
"Why not?" Sonic asked, shrugging," I'm just asking because what happened back there didn't help us at all. And it seems you never want to share the information you found out by this 'guy'."
Shadow stopped walking and glared at Sonic," If I told them ab-"
"2 new," Rouge flew in between the two," They found the corpses just about the time you guys left. And what's worse, is that it is in the city."
"Wh-" Sonic blinked and shook his head," We need to stop him."
Rouge suddenly faced Shadow,"If you go, I'll come with you. I heard you two."
"Come on Shadz, Tails is in the other workshop and it'll be us three," Sonic nudged Shadow in the arm," It'll be like a date! Well, sorta."
"In your dreams Faker," Shadow smirked," But I'll go. But if this is Mephiles, I want to see him first."
"Why?"
"Unfinished business."

Sonic was waiting for the beeping sound from the microwave to go off.
"I don't get it?" Sonic blinked.
All three of them were in Sonic(and Tails') house, sitting by the kitchen having the files scattered around the table. They were trying to figure out anything, just anything, at all that could help them.
" Shadow," Rouge glanced down," Does the files say anything else?"
"It just says the next location and the people who might get murdered," Shadow said," However, the idiot isn't sure."
"Care to elaborate on that," Rouge said, her eyes shining with brief annoyance.
"I want to find him as much as anyone else hear," Shadow snapped, red eyes flaring," We aren't even sure that this is Mephiles!"
"It is the only lead we can follow, and the Dark-"
"He closed it." Shadow cut Rouge off.
"I don't even know whats happening," Sonic said suddenly.
"The Dark Abyss-" Rouge sighed,"It's hard to explain, but it's a dangerous place from what I've heard."
"Never fall in it," Shadow warned.
"Okay..." Sonic raised a brow, but didn't say anything else at all.
"He says Mephiles hides in the Dark Abyss, which if that is the truth, that would make it harder to find him." Shadow said, reading off from one of the files.
"Wait, then how-?"
"It says some possible location where Mephiles might attack," Shadow said,"We can watch and see if anything happens while we're there."
"Fine by me," Sonic shrugged again, opening his mouth to say something, but the beeping of the microwave cut him off.
Sonic swiftly turned around and snatched the food and set it on the table.
"I'm hungry, and I don't know if you guys are, soooo take what you want before I end up eating it all."

Darkness was slowly sweeping across the area, Shadow being well hidden from sight and kept an eye out for anything unusual. It was cold, but he refused to even run home and get a coat, not wanting to miss anything. Shadow had chose a spot behind a tree and a couple of bushes, his fur color helping him camouflage very well. A feeling of had swept over him, this was a whole entire family with two young children playing in the last moments of daylight.
How can these people have done anything evil, Shadow thought, How...?
Shadow suddenly jumped, not expecting a voice to actually answer him.
I didn't say anything about these people Shadow, I just said that they might be killed.
How about you warn me next time...
Nah. This is nothing anyway, just keep an eye out.
I am, there's nothing interesting, just the kids going back into the house.
Stalker...Shadow could hear the other chuckle, Hey, are you even sure Sonic can do this? I mean he is cool and all, but...he sometimes, how does one explain this...? He jumps into action without really thinking about it.
Honestly, no. But he wants the killings to stop.
Doesn't everyone? Do y-
How are you even certain that this is Mephiles?
No...Look, I want the killings to stop as bad as everyone else in the town...The other seemed distressed, and Shadow could hear the sudden annoyance.
Silence...
Shadow stared blankly onward. Nothing seeming out of the ordinary.
Lights snapped on, illuminating the street before the house.
Nothing...
I don't know, Shad. I just get my info from Asterius, and he told me, it could be Mephy here, that could attack this home. And anyway, he'll probably wait 'til everyone is asleep.
Fine for me...
Don't sleep deprive yourself, I don't want you to faint. Again.
Shadow finally sat down, staring down each road.
I'm behind the house, if you suddenly faint, I'm here for you.
Shadow had caught a flash of blue on the other side of the street, and he couldn't help but give out a small smile.
Alright then...

...
Sonic had perched himself on a branch, watching in mute horror.
There, in front of him, stood a hedgehog that looked like Shadow. The blue hedgehog had waited 'til night had arrived before he came here. While he was walking around he caught sight of the stranger and jumped into the tree to be hidden from sight. But, it was to late, and the stranger had caught the sight of his blue fur.
Black fur, dark gray stripes, and piercing red eyes. And this hedgehog had stood underneath the tree staring upward at Sonic.
I wasn't like Sonic was scared, more like shocked, having thought that this was Mephiles and that brought back some unwanted memories.
And it was all just so sudden, it was just like he appeared.
"Who are you?" Sonic hissed, glancing toward the house.
This isn't Mephiles in disguise, hopefully.
"Aren't you Sonic?" The stranger asked, the voice deep.
"Yes...?" Sonic leaned down,"Wait...should I know you?"
The stranger snickered and turned to face the house.
"Hopefully you wouldn't know a thing about me otherwise you would have a reason to be scared," The stranger said," I've been told a lot about you. I'm Asterius, but that's all you need to know."
"I've heard that name before..." Sonic hummed, keeping his eye on the house.
"Don't remember it," Asterius said," I'm watching this house also."
"What-" Sonic jumped down," How many houses are targeted anyway. And how in the world are these guys bad? I've talked to them before and they seem like really nice people."
"Sh..." Asterius flicked his wrist, dark smoke going over Sonic's mouth, muffling his voice," This is why...never mind, you will see for yourself soon enough."
"Well, is that your polite way of saying 'Shut up'," Sonic spoke after the smoke had disappeared.
"Yes," Asterius said, very blunt.
"Why would Mephiles go after these guys anyway, aren't they supposedly bad, and Mephiles is bad..." Sonic said.
"It's Rodger," Asterius said suddenly, with an annoyed tone,"Look, give Shadow these papers and slap him for me. I'll be going now."
"What?" Sonic blinked,"Wai-"
"Keep watch on the house," Asterius glared, and for the first time did Sonic see that the pupils in his eyes were barely slits, and then the hedgehog simply just disappeared.

"Nothing had happened at my place." Rouge said.
"Same..." Both Shadow and Sonic said in unison
As soon as Rouge had left the room, did Sonic pull out the papers that Asterius wanted to hand to Shadow.
"Um, what?" Shadow seemed to glance at the papers, noticing the stamp on the side.
"Some guy came by my house, scared me actually thought he was Mephiles, and he handed me this," Sonic handed over the papers and leaned back," He wanted me to slap you."
"Who was it?" Shadow asked, staring at the folder.
"I think his name is Aphater, um, I forgot," Sonic rubbed the back of his quills and smiled shyly.
"Aster?" Shadow offered jokingly, anyway it can't be him of all people.
"Asterius!" Sonic snapped his fingers," Yeah that's his name."
Shadow hesitated and set the folder down," How-?"
"I met him at the house," Sonic said, giving a small shrug and then jumped suddenly as a guy appeared, wearing a cloak that covered everything from head to toe.
"Shadow," The guys spoke, voice rough yet soft," We need to talk. Now."
Shadow opened his mouth to speak, but the cloaked guy grabbed his arm. Sonic stood there in a stupor as the cloaked guy dragged Shadow into a different room. Hopefully, Rouge was not in there.
Why is he letting himself be dragged?
"Hey!" Sonic suddenly yelled and followed them," I wanna know what's happening also!"
The cloaked guy stared at Shadow, but all he did was shrug.
"Fine," The guy said," Shadow, Aster went to another location and he found Mephiles. Of course, one doesn't exactly meet Aster and live, but they had a friendly conversation. And Meph didn't leave any important info..."
"Well-" Shadow began to speak, but the stranger had cut him off.
"He left the corpse hanging from the tree, with the organs over their car. Make that number: Way too many people being killed." The guy shifted, seeming nervous.
Sonic suddenly felt rage.
"Why didn't the guy stop him!?" Sonic yelled.
"Because he arrived late," the guy yelled.
Sonic blinked and backed down, leaning against the wall. He let the stranger and Shadow talk.
"I tried to find out about the person, Mikey or something. Not Mikey Way, because then ,boy, I would have fun decorating the walls with Mephs blood."
"Anything else?" Shadow crossed his arms and glared at the other.
"Eh nothing," the cloaked stranger just shrugged," I'll come by later."
"Thought you would've left by now," Shadow asked.
The other shrugged and looked down.
"So did I, but..." He sighed and growled,"I don't know. Asterius thinks we should stay in this area. Many, and I mean many, openings have somehow just cracked."
"Demon have flown out, haven't they?" Shadow said, his head shaking.
Sonic was greatly confused about this. He hasn't really seen Shadow so calmly talking to another person, even slightly smiling or even a small smile.
"I don't even know what's going through his mind half the time," the guy continued," And he always laughs whenever someone say that they can kill him."
"No one even can...right?" Shadow raised a brow.
"Not that I've ever heard of," The guy shrugged,"Anyway...it was fun talking to you, but I have to go."
Shadow nodded.
"Aster still...?"
"Yes."
And with that, the guy smirked.
"I ship this, so," He saluted and then vanished with a flash of gray light.
Silence fell around the room, Sonic blinking in complete confusion.
"Ship?" Sonic asked confused.
"Ignore him," Shadow sighed,"I don't even know what that means."
