A.N. Ok, so it's kinda similar to Race, but whatever. I had a really good idea with what to do with Specs and Crutchie, but they have to be young so I'm placing Crutchie at about 7 and Specs at 8 or 9, here we go!
Fall was a very pretty season, Specs decided. It would be even better if the stupid wind would stop blowing dust onto his glasses. Specs removed his glasses for the fourth time that hour and rubbed the lenses clean. He sighed, this would be a long day.
Specs got back to the Lodging house at a reasonable hour, the sun was just beginning to set and their dinner from Kloppman had just been left out. Grabbing a bowl full of whatever-that-stuff-was, he sat down on the steps leading up to the bunk room. Soon after, a little child, sat down beside him. Specs looked over and smiled.
Sitting next to him was one of their newest newsboys, Crutchie. The kid was only 7, but he was very intelligent, smarter than Albert anyway. He had huge dimples in his cheeks and one of the most adorable and sweet smiles Specs had ever seen. His laugh was the cutest thing a person could have witness hearing, and the boys did often. Although having to use a crutch because of his leg, the kid was so energetic and always running around being chased by one of the older newsies, generally his best friend, Jack. Crutchie and Jack were rarely seen without one another, so close they were practically joined at the hip. So, it was curious that Crutchie was sitting next to Specs and not sitting across the room where Jack was busy playing a poker game with Race. Specs ruffled Crutchie's hair.
"Heya, kiddo. Whatcha doing ova here? Ain't ya playing with Jack."
Crutchie blinked at Specs with his huge eyes, glowing with pure innocence.
"Nah, Jack is busy. Ise wanted ta see something."
"Ok, and what is it dat youse wants ta see."
"Ok, but only if youse promise not ta move, ok?"
"Alright, Ise promise."
Crutchie promptly reached out and took Specs glasses off and stuck them haphazardly on his own face. Stunned, Specs blinked for a few seconds before reaching out and fixed the glasses on Crutchie's face, smiling.
Crutchie squinted behind the lenses and looked over at Specs. Specs started to chuckle seeing Crutchie huge eyes magnified by the lenses making them over take his face. Crutchie smiled back at him, but took the glasses off and handed them back to Specs rubbing his eyes.
"Man, youse sure is blind, Ise could hardly see nothing."
"Dats why Ise need dem."
"Oh, yeah, dat makes sense."
Crutchie yawned and rubbed his eyes again. Specs leaned over and picked Crutchie up, setting him in his lap. Crutchie immediately laid his head on Specs shoulder cuddling against him. Funny, Specs thought, for a tough little kid, he sure likes to be snuggled. Within a few minutes, Crutchie was fast asleep leaning against Specs, breathing lightly. Specs picked him up, carrying him up the stairs and away from the noise of the other boys and tucked him into bed, not succeeding in resisting to kiss the boy's forehead.
"Goodnight, Crutchie."
A.N. Well, that was fun. Katherine will be coming next, so R&R if you want more and I apologize for the delay in updates.
