Sabo sighed as the wind blew past his face, making him think of the promise made long ago by the three brothers. Each of them wanted to be Pirate King, but that was so long ago; and so many things have changed. Gently he put a hand to the scar over his eye, recalling how he had gotten it and the brothers he left behind for so long. He wished he could have staid with Luffy longer, to talk with him and have fun like the old days, but he didn't have that time. He had already been diverting from the path of the Revolutionary Army just to get Ace's devil's fruit. He had so much regret now that he got his memories back, and he hated the scar that was the proof of it all.
"You okay?" Koala asked, coming up from behind him and looking at him with a smile.
Sabo put on a smile and nodded his head, dropping his hand to his side and placing it on his hip. "Just thought a bug hit my eye or something." He blinked repeatedly, acting as if he was trying to get something out, and convincing Koala on his weird act.
"Ew, you have a bug crawling in your eye?" She teased, acting as if it was something horrific that was just intolerable. She giggled and looked out to sea with him, linking her hands behind her back. "Dragon called and said that we can take our time getting back." She looked at him from the corner of her eye. "He knows it's a lot for you to take in. Getting your memories back, getting Ace's devil's fruit, meeting Luffy again, and fighting against one of Blackbeard's members. He said to use your time traveling back to base to rest and catch up on paperwork."
Sabo chuckled and tilted his hat down, trying to hide the dark shadow on his eyes from Koala. "He does know I can't rest and catch up on paperwork right?"
Koala laughed more as she knew exactly what he meant. With all the work Sabo has to do for the Revolutionary Army, he hardly got rest, and was always doing something to help them. But it also didn't get past her attention how lately he doesn't seem to be in high spirits like he used to. And he's always touching his scar whenever his face gets dark. She wanted to help, but she also knew Sabo was the kind of guy to not put worry or stress on others.
"Hey! Isn't that….." Hack shouted out to Koala who was moving around the deck frantically, trying to get some of the work done as well.
Koala and Sabo stopped, both of their attentions caught on what the tough fishman could be shouting about. They walked to the edge of the deck and spotted a ship getting closer and closer as they neared it. But it wasn't just any ship… Too many times had they seen that jolly roger on the mast, and somehow Sabo couldn't stop the smile from hitting his face.
"Robin!" Koala shouted as they finally got close enough and she could spot the dark haired woman sitting on the main deck.
The archeologist looked over at the sound of her name and stood up with a smile, waving her hand at them and then turning her head the other direction and talking. Before they knew it the whole crew was appearing on the main deck and looking out to their ship with smiles. Well at least most; some had confused expressions as to who they were.
"Sabo!" Luffy shouted as he lunged at the blonde, happily hugging him tightly in joy. Never did he think he'd see Sabo once again and so soon!
"Hey Luffy!" Sabo said with a bright smile, he ruffled the boys hair and listened to him laugh as if they were kids again just playing around.
"Who's this?" Sanji asked, looking at Sabo in confusion.
"Ah, that's right you were here for him." Franky said with understanding. "This is Luffy's brother Sabo."
"Brother? So another brother other than Ace?" Nami asked, catching the attention of the blonde who glanced over at their navigator.
His eyebrows raised instantly in her clad wear. From her bikini top, to her short shorts, and finally to her heels. Her figure was great too, and her curly orange hair looked like fire dropping from her head. But what his eyes truly caught onto was the scar on her left shoulder that was trying to be covered up by a tattoo. A slight twinge came across his eye as if his own scar was throbbing at the sight of hers.
"Yeah!" Luffy shouted excitedly, jumping up and down like a monkey. "I thought Sabo died when we were kids but then my dad saved him and he's been with them!"
Nami effortlessly kept up with Luffy's fast paced explaining and nodded her head, all too used to his energetic and low maintenance way of saying things. "So, why haven't you come up before?"
"He lost his memory until the news about Ace came out, and it flooded him with all the memories from their past." Franky said softly, not wanting to step on any toes and make it seem like something bad.
Sabo gave a small half smile and held out his hands as if he wasn't going to object with how they told his story. After all, they didn't lie about anything. Nami looked at him with squinted eyes for a moment and then looked at Luffy who was latched onto Sabo now with a beaming smile. She jutted her hip out and placed her hand on top of it, closing her eyes and letting out a deep sigh. Finally she opened her eyes again and smile at Sabo and his two crewmates.
"Well, since your Luffy's brother you better not expect too much hospitality!" Nami smiled, waving her hand around in a circle by her wrist. "After all, you're family now. My names Nami by the way."
Sabo's smile widened at the word 'family'. It had been so long since he'd heard that word. The Revolutionary Army was his family too, but this was Luffy's crew, and it was going to be like old times. But it was obvious who ran the ship here though; Luffy may be captain, but it was Nami who ran the show and was the boss of everyone. It was nice to know Luffy had a crew that looked after him like a family should.
Luffy couldn't stop himself from asking his cook to make enough for a party, and Sanji wasn't arguing as he eyed Koala up and down as she shied away and tried to hide behind hack. Luffy was just as energetic as ever, if not more so. Yet, he was more mature in a way. He told Sabo about his adventures, and the details of them all; things he couldn't get just from reports and posters. Luffy had gotten strong, and when the time came, he was more mature than anyone could think possible for him. It made Sabo's heart twinge in regret that he couldn't help Luffy grow, and in the process his scar began to hurt as well.
Sabo couldn't sleep, and night quickly fell on the crews. Finally the air was quiet and all that was left was the sound of the wind and the sea, lulling Sabo in a tranquil state. The scar over his eye throbbed continuously throughout the night and it took all his will not to keep covering it and try and show he was in pain.
Now he leaned on the railing of his ship, seeing his crew asleep on the Sunny with Luffy's crew. His ship was the one place he could escape to now. He put his hand over his eye, scrunching his eyebrows together and trying to force the pain away, but it seemed to just throb more. He couldn't figure out why it hurt. It had never been this way before. It began with his memories coming back…Maybe it was just the stress from all of the memories coming in, dressrosa, and all that happened in recent events….
"Does your eye hurt?"
Sabo took his hand from his eye and looked back at the unknown voice that wasn't Koala, who usually appeared around this time. Nami stood there with a confused and slightly worried look, trying to get a better look at his eye that he was covering.
"What?" Sabo asked, forgetting what she had said when his eyes caught the firey hair and deep brown eyes.
Nami smiled and raised an eyebrow. She walked over to the railing, standing next to him. She pointed to her own eye, mirroring Sabo. "Your scar. Does it hurt?"
Sabo shook his head and crossed his arms on the railing. "No."
"You're lying." Nami sighed, leaning against the railing with her back and tilting her head back to look up at the sky.
Sabo couldn't believe she blatantly told him he was lying. She wasn't lying herself, but he couldn't believe she didn't just drop it like everyone else did. The moonlight glistened on her skin as she breathed in deeply and took in the crisp night air, not saying anything more on the subject, but instead letting the accusation sit on him.
"If you stare so much, you'll burn a hole into me." She teased, opening her eyes and looking over at Sabo who tinged red. "It's better if you take a picture. It lasts longer."
"If I wanted to look at a picture only, I just have to look at your wanted poster." He said back, feeling the teasing rising up in himself. He didn't know that this could be brought out of him, but it wasn't necessarily a bad thing. "The real thing is much better." He gave a playful wink and a handsome smile towards her.
It was Nami's turn to go bright red as he said that. She couldn't stop the giggle rising out of her chest and soon the two of them were laughing together, the tension and pressure relieving from Sabo's chest. Nami couldn't take her eyes off of Sabo since he boarded their ship. His smile was fake, and his eyes showed a heavy burden on him that he was trying to hide from everyone. But now, as he stood next to her laughing and smiling, there was no longer that fake smile, and burdened eyes.
"When did it start?" She asked, turning to face him completely.
"When did what start?" Sabo said, a smile still on his face as he turned to look at her head on as well.
"The throbbing." She said, reaching her hand out and running a thumb over his scar. He looked at her in shock, not able to move away from her hand and not expecting her keen sense. "Since you regained your memories?"
"How'd you…." Sabo was utterly baffled as he grabbed her hand and pulled his from his scar, looking her deeply in the eye. Those brown eyes held a lot within them, but at the same time they hid a lot as well.
She gave a wry smile, showing that it wasn't something he needed to be ashamed of or worried over. "Mine used to do the same thing." She pulled her hand from his grip and turned slightly to show him her shoulder with the scar and tattoo. "You see, I was originally a slave for the Arlong pirates. I hated the tattoo they put on me. So when Luffy came into the picture, I guess I couldn't stop the hope from rising inside of me and I snapped. I ended up taking the old fashion way of removal. I cut it off." Sabo's eyes turned to horror as he imagined this young girl years ago before she joined Luffy, cutting herself with a knife, just to get it away. "I got a new tattoo over it and it healed up. But then it really started throbbing. It wasn't a pain that could be solved with medicine. It was a deep one of regret and guilt for what I had done. But Luffy made all that go away when time and time again he proved that I was part of his family now, and what I did before didn't matter anymore."
"It's not that simple for me." Sabo said, turning his head from her, not wanting to see the pain that was crossing her eyes and showing him her vulnerable side.
Nami's hand came up once again and cupped his cheek, making him face her once again as her thumb grazed over his scar, showing that it wasn't the pain that normally came with a scar. "Why not?" She asked simply, raising one eyebrow. "The scars we bear tell a story of who we were, and what we've become."
It was a simple sentence, but it resounded inside of Sabo deeply. The throbbing was warmed by her hand as she gently moved over it, and soon the throbbing was gone.
"Luffy is proud of who you've become. And obviously he holds no grudge about you making him believe you was dead, nor that you couldn't prevent Ace's death. None of that matters to him. All that matters is the present you who is thriving with friends, and is able to stand in front of Luffy alive once more." Nami told him, trying to make him crush that guilt and resentment that was inside of his chest. To get rid of this deep of a pain, you had to go to the source, and obviously Luffy was a part of it if it came from when he regained those memories.
Sabo felt the twinge in his chest finally subside, but then the emotions tried to rush out of him like a flood. He wanted to cry and shout, to lash out at everything in retribution for everything that had come through all these years. Nami put her other hand up, cupping his cheeks on either side and gave a small smile. She pulled his face closer and gave a small kiss on his lips, leaving the soft skin laying against one another before pulling back and placing her forehead on his.
"I figured a little distraction was good for you right now." She chuckled, seeing his eyes widened in front of her. "Can't have you over thinking and contradicting yourself."
Sabo smiled and his hand went to the small of her back, pulling her into him so they were flush against one another. His other hand came up and cupped her cheek, this time feeling her smooth skin beneath his thumb. Not a single blemish or mark on her skin aside from the tattoo and scar. Her brown eyes stared into his own, as if they were secretly looking into the souls of one another. His heart beat erratically inside of his chest, trying to push him forward on what he wanted to do, but he worried that if it beat any faster it would just explode. How can she give him such a reaction? He guessed this is what they meant by unexpected love.
"I need more distractions." He whispered, pulling her closer to him and letting their lips barely graze against one another. Sabo didn't want to push Nami if the first kiss was really just her distracting him, but so far she had pushed him away or argued against it.
Her hands dropped from his face and instead linked behind his neck. She grabbed the hat from his head and held it behind him, getting it out of the way so it didn't interfere. "my pleasure," She whispered back, pushing up on her toes ever so slightly so he wasn't having to lean down so much.
Their lips tangled within one another, and the moment they touched, it was as if an electric shot had gone through both of them, yet neither pulled away. Nami tilted her head slightly to push the kiss deeper, and tightened her arms around him. It was as if she couldn't get close enough to him. Though they were completely pushed against one another in every spot, she still felt like they weren't close enough.
His fingers pushed patterns onto her skin, feeling the shiver run down her back as the heat flared up from his touch. His tongue lapped against her bottom lip, asking permission for entrance. Nami nearly laughed at the question. Even when they were in the heat of making out, he was still being as polite as he could be and seeing if it were alright. She wanted to teased him, making him beg for it a little more, but she didn't want him to get the wrong idea, and she definitely didn't want to ruin the mood. She parted her lips ever so much, letting him get a small taste of the inside of her mouth. His tongue teased the inside edge of her lips, tasting the tiniest bit of citrus in her mouth. But this wasn't enough for him, he wanted to taste even more.
Completely different from his demeanor before he pushed his head towards her more and slid his tongue past the small opening she gave him, making her open up more in shock. His tongue wrapped around hers, playing with the muscle as if it were a game. Nami couldn't stop the airy sounds coming from her as she tried to stop the shivers from traveling down her spine. But he knew what he was doing, and he was good at it. Nami felt like her head was completely enveloped in fog and all she could focus on was Sabo in front of her.
Her knees shook as her muscles began to weaken. It was as if he were turning her to jelly with the immense heat that was being passed between them. Her legs finally gave out, dropping her to the deck, but his arm that was around her caught her and kept her from dropping hard. Gently he pulled away from her, realizing maybe it was a little too much for her to handle at the moment. He had to admit, he cheated a bit and raised his body temperature just to make the heat better. Ace's devil fruit came in handy in more ways than one.
He lifted her up and placed her on the railing of the ship, giving her a place to sit and finally catch her breath. Her chest heaved as her eyes slowly began to clear, letting her mind focus once more and try to balance itself back to normal. He leaned on his hands that were placed on either side of her on the railing and leaned towards her, putting his forehead on hers.
He chuckled at the sight of her, pride swelling within him. "Too much?"
Nami closed her eyes from a moment and took a deep breath in, clearing the last of the fog before breathing it out and opening her eyes once more. She had a slight red tinge to her cheeks and a smile crossed her lips. "Careful, I'll get addicted." She teased back, seriously believing herself. If he kissed her like that often, she'd never be able to kiss anyone other than him.
He chuckled again and gave a small peck to her lips. "Got it. But don't tempt me. If I get you addicted, I might just have to take you with me."
"You'd have to fight Luffy on that one." Nami told him, raising an eyebrow at the mere thought of Sabo and Luffy fighting. They'd up destroying both their ships if they did.
Sabo pulled back from her and took his hat, a smile still on his face. "I don't dare do that." He admitted, knowing with how strong Luffy was, it'd be a hard fight, even with Ace's devil's fruit within him. He looked over at the Sunny, seeing everyone still asleep peacefully. "We ought to be going to bed soon. Both of us have a long day tomorrow getting back out to our journey's."
"Let's stay out her for just a little longer." Nami said, looking up at the sky as the wind blew. "It's nice out and the sky is clear so you can see all the stars!"
Sabo slid down the wall of the cabin and looked up at the sky, placing his hat on the deck next to him. "It is beautiful."
He felt Nami walk over to him and set herself next to him, leaning against his arm and leaning her head on his shoulder as she relaxed. His arm pulled out from between her and him and wrapped around her waist once more, letting her come any closer and lay her head in the nape of his neck. For the longest time both of them just sat there like that as they breathed one another in and looked at the sky and the sea, not worrying about the past or the future, and not caring who would see.
The sun shone brightly in the sky the next morning and a small giggle seemed to wake Sabo up. He groaned as he cracked his eyes against the sun and realized how stiff he was. He looked around and noticed that he was still outside against the cabin with Nami leaning against him, fast asleep as well. Then his eyes focused on the girl in front of him who was crouched down and had her chin resting in her hands as she looked at him with a smile.
"I guess you had a fun night as well." Koala said, making him wake up the rest of the way.
"Oh shush," He said, reaching out with his free hand and knocking her hat down into her face so the smile was covered up. She wasn't the only one who had seen them. Seems everyone but him and Nami were already up and watching from the other ship with their own smiles. He sighed and prepared himself for the teasing he knew he was going to get from everyone.
Nami grumbled next to him and stir, her eyes hazy from sleep as she sat up and stretched her arms above her head. A yawn broke out of her and she slowly blinked her eyes, still not awake yet to comprehend that there was someone in front of her or that her own crew was watching her from the Sunny.
"Morning," Sabo said, catching her attention and making her look over at him.
"morning." She grumbled back, rubbing her eyes to wipe the sleep from them.
"Seems we have company." He said, pointing over towards the sunny and making her look over when she was awake.
Her face had become bright red as she realized the situation herself. Luffy began chuckling on the ship, making Nami clench her fist in anger and grab her shoe. She threw her shoe over to the sunny, pegging Luffy right in the forehead with it and knocking him backwards to the deck.
"Just wait until I get up there!" She threatened them, holding her other shoe up as a reason they should still be scared.
"Sabo, we have to get going soon." Hack interrupted minding his own business as he scrambled around the ship to get it ready.
"Right," He said, nodding his head and standing up. He reached a hand out to Nami and helped her up as well, not letting go even though she was fine.
"You're leaving?" Luffy shouted, before launching himself over the railing onto Sabo in a deep embrace again.
Sabo patted his head, trying to keep the boy from crying and having a predicament again. "We'll see each other again."
"Really?" Luffy asked, a crack in his throat showing he was fighting the tears.
"I'm sure of it." Sabo said, letting Luffy let him go and rejoin his crew on the ship.
Nami and Sabo just looked at each other, unsure of what to say really, but they didn't just want to end it with nothing. Sabo grabbed her hand again and gave a light squeeze of reassurement, a half smile appearing on his face to help his unspoken words.
"See you again," He said simply, feeling the eyes press on him from either side of the ships.
"Yeah, later." Nami said back, a small nod to her farewell.
"Ah! Just hurry up and kiss her!" Koala shouted, pushing both of her hands into his back and shoving him forward towards Nami.
Just as the girl predicted, they connected by their lips, giving neither of them a choice as they lip locked. Sabo wrapped his free arm around her and pulled her close, making the kiss strained and deep against her own. He was memorizing every detail about her lips and the taste, never wanting to forget it. Finally he pulled away from her and smiled, taking a step backwards and letting her hand go while he placed his hat on top of his head.
"We'll see each other again." Sabo said, a teasing smile coming over him. "After all, I have to give the addict what she wants."
Nami laughed out loud as she walked to the Sunny and climbed over, standing with her own crew once more as Sabo, Koala, and Hack all set off back towards the Revolutionary Army. The waving continued from either crew until the ships were unable to see one another. But she didn't lose hope. Sabo was true to his word and would keep to his promise of coming back to see them again. Plus there was something in her mind and heart that told her that there was no possible way they'd go through the Grand Line and not bump into them again. After all Luffy's dad is their boss, and Robin is an old comrade. I'm sure this wasn't the end.
