Everybody came back dreadfully tired from the weekend to school on Monday. Roddy and Andrew were walking to their first class talking about the dance.
"Where were you the whole dance?" Roddy asked as he looked at Andrew.
"I was…around." He said smiling.
"With a girl?" Roddy asked lifting his eyebrow.
"Maybe." He shrugged as Roddy rolled his eyes and Andrew laughed.
"Whatever. I don't see how you spent your whole night with one girl." Roddy said as Andrew looked at him.
"Look who's talking." Andrew said as Roddy blushed. "You spent your whole night with Lilac." He said in a girly dreamy voice while batting his eyelashes.
"Shut up! It's just one step closer." Roddy told him
"Yeah and you're taking baby steps. By the time you guys get together we'll be here for our twentieth reunion." Andrew said as Roddy smacked the back of his head. Hydro soon joined them and they both looked at him confused.
"Where were you? We didn't see you at all at the dance." Roddy asked as Andrew rubbed the back of his head.
"Flash and I got grounded for short-circuiting our television." Hydro said as Andrew and Roddy rolled their eyes.
"I swear every time you hang out with your brother, you always end up grounded." Andrew said as Hydro rolled his eyes and Roddy laughed.
Bolt was sitting in his English class waiting for Chrissy to arrive, but when the bell rang he started to worry. She never was late for a class and Shade said she was here today. After his teacher made some announcements he asked to go to the bathroom to look for her. He jogged through all the halls, floors, and peeked in every room. He couldn't find her. He suddenly heard whispering and whimpers. He peeked his head behind a corner and saw Chrissy with Joseph. He felt a pang of jealousy when he saw they were together, but soon realized Joseph was forcing himself on her. Chrissy was pressed against a locker as Joseph traced her face with his finger and she shut her eyes waiting for it to be over. She suddenly felt his weight off of her and her eyes snapped open to see him on the floor and Bolt standing in front of her fuming.
"Don't you ever touch her again, you fucking piece of shit." Bolt threatened through clenched teeth as Joseph wiped his mouth and saw blood. He tackled Bolt to the ground and they both started fighting each other. He got a few lucky shots, but Bolt quickly punched him and kicked him off of him. Joseph was about to tackle him, but Bolt aimed an electric ball at him.
"Leave! Now!" Bolt yelled his hand and armed surging with electricity. Joseph smirked and walked off without much else to say. Bolt knew from his smirk that this wasn't the last time he would see that punk. He suddenly felt arms around him and saw Chrissy crying into his chest. Bolt was shocked at first, but quickly wrapped his arms around her. "It's okay. Don't worry. I'm here" He murmured into her hair. "I'm here." He whispered as Chrissy held onto him tighter.
"Thank you." She whispered against his chest. Bolt held her a little bit long before pulling away and wiping the tears away from her eyes.
"C'mon, we better get back to class." Bolt said as she sniffed and nodded. They walked back into class and told the teacher what happened and he nodded and let Chrissy go to her seat without a detention. Later at lunch, Bolt was telling Shawn and Flash about what happened and they were both shocked and silent after he finished the story.
"I can't believe after all that you two are still not together!" Shawn exclaimed as Bolt rolled his eyes.
"I'm just being a friend for her now." He told him as he put food on his tray.
"She doesn't need another friend! She needs a boyfriend to protect her." Flash argued as Shawn nodded in agreement.
"You guys! I can be her friend and still protect her." Bolt exclaimed as they both rolled their eyes.
"Sure, just keep on lying to yourself." Flash remarked as he paid for his lunch.
"Whatever. How's that crush on Ivy going?" Bolt smirked and Flash immediately blushed.
"I don't know what you're talking about." Flash huffed and Bolt chuckled. On the other side of the cafeteria Chrissy finished explaining what happened to Lauren and Shade.
"I'm so sorry for ever introducing you to that guy." Lauren frowned after Chrissy told her what happened.
"It's okay, you didn't know and I'm fine." Chrissy assured her.
"Thanks to Bolt." Shade commented as both of them looked at him. "What? It's pretty obvious you two like each other." He said and Chrissy quickly looked down trying to hide the blush on her cheeks.
"I can't believe I've been this blind! It's so obvious!" Lauren exclaimed and Chrissy glared at her. "This is a new task for me." She smiled deviously.
"Oh no! You're not doing anything! Stay out of this." Chrissy told her firmly.
"Fine." She huffed and turned away. Shade smirked at Lauren who had a devious look in her eye. This was far from over. Lazarus walked over to his table and slammed his tray in front of Derek.
"You owe me big time." Lazarus told him as Derek looked at him skeptically.
"How so?" Derek asked.
"This dumbass almost interrupted your kiss for the second time!" Lazarus exclaimed pointing at AJ. AJ argued something back at Lazarus and they soon started arguing like usual while Derek drifted off in his thoughts about Ginger. They spent all weekend together and when they weren't together they would constantly text each other. He looked around when he realized Lazarus and AJ weren't going to stop anytime soon and spotted Ginger across the cafeteria. He quickly ditched his tray and arguing his friends to go over to her.
"Hey." Derek smiled softly.
"Hi." She said shyly as Serenity and Julian rolled their eyes.
"They're boyfriend and girlfriend and yet they're still this shy around each other." Julian shook his head when suddenly they noticed that both of them moved to a table to themselves. "Where were you at the Masquerade Dance, by the way? I didn't see you at all." Julian asked as Serenity shrugged her shoulders.
"I didn't feel like going." Serenity said as Julian rolled his eyes.
"That's a pretty lame excuse." He told her and she shrugged and continued to eat her yogurt. She stopped a bit when she spotted Conner walking with Onyx and Julian quickly caught on. "Does it happen to be due to a certain green-haired director?" He smirked.
"No." She scowled at him.
"I knew it! You like him!" Julian exclaimed and Serenity rolled her eyes. "Well hopefully he's not like your ex." Julian said as Serenity's fell face at the thought of her ex. "Man, after you guys broke up, your Dad was going crazy with joy!" Julian laughed as Serenity laughed along with him at the memory.
"I don't think I've ever seen my dad so happy before." She chuckled and Julian wiped a tear from his eye. Julian stopped laughing when he spotted a certain individual.
"Speak of the devil and he shall appear." Julian muttered as he leaned back in his seat and glared at the hedgehog coming towards them. He was blue and had long quills that were spread out behind him with bright red eyes. He smirked when he saw Serenity.
"Hey baby, haven't seen you in a while." He said sliding into the seat next to her.
"And I hope it stays that way, John." Serenity sneered before grabbing her tray and leaving.
"Why are you still mad at me?" He asked as he walked next to her.
"John, you cheated on me five times. Do you think I'll be all sunshine and rainbows after that?" Serenity drawled sarcastically.
"C'mon, you know what we had was special. Those other girls meant nothing." John said stepping in front of her.
"I think you and I have different definitions of nothing." She glared at him before stepping around him. He grabbed her wrist and she quickly whirled around to slap him, but he grabbed that hand also.
"I don't think you understand how much you mean to me." He muttered in a menacing voice.
"Really? I mean that much to you? It's too bad that I don't feel the same way." She pretended to pout before kneeing him right between his legs. John fell to his knees in pure agony as Serenity simply flipped her quills over her shoulder and stared down at him on the ground.
"I'm over you John, get it through your head." She told him before turning on her heel and leaving.
"Is this what love feels like?" Conner muttered dreamily as he watched Serenity walk away from her scummy ex-boyfriend. Onyx caught up with Conner and looked at him confused.
"Why did you run all of a sudden?" He asked.
"Oh! I just saw Serenity in trouble so I went to help, but she took care of it herself." Conner said casually as he returned to their table like it was no big deal. Onyx shook his head before following him back. After class Topaz went to her Zoology class, a class that she shared with Onyx, Brice, and Nicole.
"Okay class, this weekend we'll be going on a camping trip. Now I'll be supervising this trip and we'll go up to the mountains for two nights and come back on Sunday." The teacher explained as the class cheered. The teacher began passing out permission slips while discussing the details of the trip and Onyx read the itinerary intently.
'Camping trip? This could be fun.' Onyx thought as he looked over to his brother who was sleeping. He rolled his eyes and looked over to Topaz. She smiled at him and he looked away shyly. He didn't like the way he felt around her, he got so nervous and shy—he didn't even know how he felt about her, but he still managed to act like an idiot around her. Nicole smiled excitedly before turning around in her seat to face Topaz.
"Are you excited?" Nicole asked.
"Yeah. Do you think anything will happen?" Topaz asked as she looked over to Onyx and Brice.
"You never know. Only fate will tell." Nicole smiled as Topaz sighed.
'Thank God Amber is not in this class.' Topaz thought as she looked over to Onyx again. It was the end of the day and everybody was now in Power Practice and today they were developing their powers more.
"Hydro I always thought you could do this, but your Dad won't let me try it." Reese said as he pulled Hydro away from Static.
"And what is that?" Hydro asked as he looked at Reese skeptically.
"I know you can control any liquid. Water, juice, milk, the list goes on, but I want to see if you can control a liquid you can't see." Reese said as Hydro looked at him confused.
"What liquid is that?" Hydro asked.
"Blood." Reese simply said as Hydro eyes widened.
"What?" Hydro exclaimed as Reese shushed him.
"I know it sounds…" Reese trailed off trying to find the right word.
"Crazy!" Hydro yelled as Reese rolled his eyes.
"I'm not asking you to extract their blood or make it stop flowing so they could die. I just want to see if you can control the movement in their body." Reese explained as Hydro looked at him incredulously.
"But who do I do it on?" Hydro asked as Reese smiled.
"Test it on me." Reese told him as Hydro looked at him like he was insane. "I'll be fine just try to make me walk towards you." He said as he took a few steps back. Hydro took uneasy breath and closed his eyes. He tried to focus all his energy on the flowing blood in Reese's body. He stuck his hand out in front of him and concentrated harder. Reese felt the blood in him rush in a different movement never felt before and before he knew it he was moving towards Hydro. Hydro opened his eyes and saw what he was doing it and he was surprised he even pulled it off. He stopped not wanting to risk it and Reese smiled at him. "Good job!" Reese said as Static walked over to him.
"What did you make him do?" Static yelled at Reese who just smirked.
"I made him control my blood and it worked fine!" Reese said with a smug smile.
"Dad, it worked fine." Hydro said as Reese grew an even smugger smile.
"You need to control this power, Hydro. It can be more dangerous than you think." Static warned as Reese also looked at him in the same expression. Hydro nodded before they walked away to help the others.
Friday finally rolled in and everybody in Zoology was packing up their stuff on the bus. Topaz sat next to Onyx since Amber nearly killed her for sitting next to Nicole. She wasn't even in the class yet still managed to interfere with her life. Topaz and Onyx talked for a bit, but eventually both put their earphones in and listened to music. The trip to the mountains was longer than expected and Topaz felt herself starting to fall asleep. Onyx was looking out the window listening to his music when he felt a sudden weight on his shoulder. He turned to see Topaz resting her head on his shoulder, fast asleep. He blushed as he looked around himself. He saw his brother sleeping as usual with Nicole behind him and everybody else seemed to be distracted. Did no one really see that this was actually happening?
"Onyx." He heard her say and he immediately thought she had woken up and he was caught for being a creep.
"Yeah?" Onyx asked looking back at her. He noticed she was still sleeping and she hadn't even shown a sign of waking up. 'She's sleep talking! About me?' He thought as he looked around. Did no one really see this? He paused his music to see if she was saying anything else. After five minutes of nothing, he started his music again and leaned his head against hers and decided to catch up on some sleep too. If she was going to sleep on him, he only thought it was fair.
"Hey lovebirds! Wake up!" Brice shouted starling Topaz and Onyx awake. They both realized that they were now in their location and everyone was getting off the bus. Topaz blushed when she noticed she had fallen asleep on Onyx and she quickly got off the bus before he had the chance to say anything. Onyx watched her run away sadly before glaring at his brother.
"You had to wake us up." Onyx mumbled as he got up.
"It's what I'm here for." He smirked turning Onyx's hat around and flicking the lid down and over his face.
"Idiot." Onyx huffed as he fixed his hat. Brice laughed as Onyx shoved him and they both walked off the bus to rejoin the rest of the class.
"Kids it's time to set up your tents. Remember girls on the left and boys on the right!" The teacher said as everybody started to set up their tents.
"So how was your little nap?" Nicole asked with a big smile as she and Topaz set up their tent.
"Embarrassing." Topaz muttered as Nicole looked at her confused.
"How could have it been embarrassing?" Nicole asked placing her hands on her hips.
"I fell asleep on him! We barely even talk and I just happen to fall asleep on him! He must think I'm such a weirdo!" Topaz exclaimed throwing her hands in the air.
"Calm down it's not like you do anything embarrassing in your sleep." Nicole said and Topaz eyes widened.
"I do! Oh my God! I talk in my sleep! Amber complains about it all the time! I could have said something even more embarrassing! Why did I have to come on this stupid trip?" Topaz whined covering her face with her hands. Nicole sighed and put her arm around Topaz's shoulders.
"I bet you didn't even sleep long enough to say something. Don't worry about it. If you're really worried, you should ask him. Who knows? He could have fallen asleep before he got the chance to hear anything." Nicole said reassuringly. Topaz smiled softly before taking a deep breath and collecting herself. "Okay let's finish building this tent!" Nicole smiled. On the other side of the campsite Brice and Onyx were setting up their tent.
"She said your name and you just fall asleep herself! What kind of shit is that?" Brice laughed hysterically as Onyx glared at him.
"Shut up! At least I had the guts to sit next to her. Unlike you and Nicole." Onyx hissed and Brice stopped laughing and rolled his eyes. While they constantly annoyed each other, Brice was close to his brother and about the only person who knew about his crush on Nicole.
"She was sitting behind me. That's close enough." Brice mumbled with a shrug before tossing his bag into their finished tent.
"Do you even talk to her?" Onyx asked as they made their way to the center of the campsite.
"Maybe." Brice mumbled and Onyx chuckled.
"Okay class, I've split you into pairs for a Nature Scavenger Hunt!" The teacher exclaimed excitedly as the class just faked their enthusiasm. The teacher paired everyone up and fate should have it that Topaz and Onyx were partners. "Oh and kids there's a special prize for the winners and don't worry it's not an educational prize." The teacher said which made everybody a little more excited. Everybody quickly grabbed their lists and disposable cameras before they started their hunt. But it soon turned into a competition with the announcement of a prize and everyone started running.
"Thank God none of the speedsters are in this class." Onyx told Topaz making her laugh. She looked down at the list and tried to prioritize what they should find first.
"We need to find a Papilio Xuthus and a Spider Lily." Topaz said as they ran through the forest.
"Okay, stop for a second." Onyx said as they slowed down to a stop. "We learned about this bug it likes to be in humid places. Find a humid spot and we're bound to find the flower." He explained and Topaz was slightly impressed by his intelligence. She looked on the map and tried to remember what she knew about the area.
"Right there! Let's go." Topaz said pointing to a marsh on the map and running off. About two hours later the two of them came back with all the pictures with their list finished and the pictures to prove it.
"Good job Onyx and Topaz! I'll announce the winner next week." The teacher told them and they sighed annoyed. They thought they'd find out the winner today! The teacher explained to them that they would be gathering for dinner in about an hour and were welcomed to take a break.
"Good job partner." Onyx said as they sat down on some logs.
"Thanks, you didn't do too bad yourself." Topaz smiled before she took a sip out of her water bottle. A lull formed in their conversation and the silent slowly started to get awkward. "Um…Onyx can I ask you something?" Topaz asked playing with the cap of her water bottle.
"Sure." He shrugged.
"Did I say anything when I fell asleep on the bus?" Topaz asked quietly and staring down at the ground. Onyx blushed, but quickly cleared his throat.
"Um…you said my name." He told her while scratching the side of his cheek. Topaz blushed furiously and held her face in her hands.
"I can't believe I did that!" Topaz exclaimed hiding her face in embarrassment. Onyx was panicking slightly because he didn't really know what to say to make her feel better.
"Um, it's no problem. I know it meant nothing." Onyx quickly told her. He was hoping it did mean something, but seeing her freak out made him think that it didn't really mean anything.
"Thanks." She sighed and he nodded.
"Uh…we better see what the class is doing now." Onyx said standing up and offering his hand to Topaz. He helped her up and they both walked over to where the rest of the class was. Little did they know Brice was watching them and when he saw them brush off their moment on the bus he decided to take matters into his own hands. He looked around and saw Nicole by the coolers and snuck his way over to her.
"I think my brother has a thing for your friend." Brice said as he approached Nicole who was drinking some water.
"No duh, but they're so damn shy." Nicole rolled her eyes before twisting the cap of her water bottle back on.
"That's my brother for you, but I think I have a plan to get them together." Brice smirked and Nicole raised an eyebrow.
"What's the plan?" Nicole asked her own smirk matching Brice's devious one. Brice quickly filled her in on his plan as they made their way to where they were serving up dinner. Onyx was sitting next to Topaz eating when his phone started to go off.
"You get reception up here?" Topaz asked as Onyx shrugged his shoulders.
"I guess." He mumbled before standing up and walking away to answer his phone. "Hello?"
"Hey bro!" Ruby said on the other line and Onyx groaned. "Don't give me that! How's camping?"
"Fine. Why are you even calling me?" Onyx asked annoyed.
"I got bored. So are you and Topaz together yet?" Ruby asked excitedly.
"No and I told you I didn't want you butting into my business!" Onyx hissed into his phone.
"Excuse me, it's so my business to. You're my brother—my twin, and she's one of my friends and you guys are too damn shy to do anything about it Even though you two totally like each other!" Ruby exclaimed and Onyx rolled his eyes.
"Bye Ruby." Onyx said hanging up before she could saying anything else. Onyx marched back over to his spot and Topaz smiled at him.
"Interesting conversation?" Topaz asked.
"You're lucky you don't have a twin sister." Onyx muttered and she snorted.
"I think you're forgetting that I have a pestering little sister. I think I have it worse." She laughed and Onyx smiled softly. Brice and Nicole were watching them from behind a tree and Brice smirked.
"Phase One complete." Brice whispered as he texted Ruby a quick thank you.
"You know, we're not really spies." Nicole muttered and Brice shrugged.
"Can't help it, my Mom's one." Brice told her as Nicole laughed. Their plan was under way and now they just needed to wait for dinner to end. Dinner finished relatively soon and now everybody was gathered around a campfire exchanging stories and making s'mores. The teacher clapped her hands to get everyone's attention.
"Okay, you know we can't go camping without a couple of ghost stories. So who has a good one?" The teacher asked as Brice practically fell out of his seat raising his hand. "Brice go ahead." The teacher said as Brice moved to the center of the circle right near the fire.
"Long ago on a class trip like the one we are on now, there was a girl named Rachel. Her and her boyfriend came on this trip looking for a good time. Late at night Rachel heard a noise outside her tent. She thought it was her boyfriend and she left her tent to go find him. What she didn't expect to see is him in cold blood and stabbed in the chest thirteen times." Brice told his tale as everyone listened to him intently. Topaz gripped Onyx's sleeve in fright and he tried to not read too into it.
"She let out a blood curdling scream waking everybody up. When they all came outside she pointed to her boyfriend screaming and crying. Everybody looked down and saw nothing, but she could still see him on the ground, blood around him. Her teacher came and tried to calm her down, but nothing would. The next day the boyfriend was missing and she was the only one that knew what happened to him. She was sent to a mental asylum where she spent the rest of her life and to this day you can still hear her screams through the woods." Brice whispered finishing his story. Suddenly a loud echoing scream erupted through the trees only to be fueled with the ones from the students. Topaz buried her face into Onyx's chest and put his arms around her trying to comfort her. Brice started cracking up when everybody's screams died down. "Ah, the magic of a tape recorder." Brice said pulling it out and replaying the scream.
"Idiot." Onyx muttered as he threw a marshmallow at him. Brice caught it in his mouth and gave him a thumbs up as Onyx rolled his eyes. Onyx realized he had his arms still around Topaz and he let go of her. "Sorry." He mumbled looking away from her and blushing.
"It's okay." She murmured shyly.
"Oh my God! I can't take it anymore." Nicole exclaimed before stomping over to them.
"You're going to ruin the plan!" Brice shouted coming to her side.
"I don't care. Onyx you like Topaz and don't bother denying it because she likes you too! Now will you two stop being so shy and get together already!" Nicole shouted and the two of them slowly turned to look at teach other.
"You like me?" Onyx asked softly.
"Yeah." Topaz smiling shyly. Onyx cupped his hands around her face and made her look at him while he smiled.
"I do too." He whispered before kissing her softly. Nicole sighed happily while Brice huffed.
"My plan would have been better." He muttered and Nicole rolled her eyes.
"The direct way is better." Nicole said as Brice laughed.
"Maybe this time." Brice said as Nicole went into her tent.
