Wow guys, I am overwhelmed with the amount of love you guys are giving this story, thank you so much for all the support! I hope you enjoy this next chapter!
I actually used some Romania sentences in this chapter from a translation tool. If anyone speaks Romanian and it's completely and utterly wrong, I apologize for butchering your language. I do not speak Romanian and have no idea if it's right.
Please review if you enjoy! :)
I still do not own any of the characters from SHIELD
"Romania?" Simmons said, "How are we in Romania?"
"They probably put us on a plane while we were knocked unconscious," Fitz said. "Main thing is, we need to get to a city, and away from here before they come looking for us."
They looked in both directions. There was countryside for miles and miles with no city in site.
"I guess we walk." Simmons said, simply.
"We walk." Fitz repeated.
An hour later, after Simmons had long given up wearing her high heels, she had them dangling from her fingers, with her other hand on her forehead, protecting her eyes from the sun. They had a brisk pace, in case Sharon and her goons had come looking for them, but slow enough to keep their energy up. They had been on the lookout for their assailants, and were ready to hide if needed. They had barely talked during that hour walk, but instead were focusing on the mission at hand. How to get back to Coulson and the others. They were both in deep thought, when a rumbling from behind them broke them out of their reverie. They quickly turned towards the noise, expecting Sharon and her men, but were relieved to see a small pickup truck that was most definitely not Sharon's style. Fitz and Simmons both waved their arms, getting the drivers attention. The driver slowed and pulled towards them.
"Ummm," Fitz said as he walked towards the window, "I can't speak Romanian."
Simmons lightly placed her hand on Fitz's arm, "let me," she said, moving in front of him.
"Hi," she said, leaning slightly on the window frame, smiling at the man driving, "Puteţi să vă rugăm să ne ia la Bucuresti?" she asked. "Vă rugăm să? Soţul meu şi AM fugit în unele probleme."
The man looked between Simmons, and Fitz, who was looking at Simmons in complete shock, and looked back towards Simmons again.
"Da, Da EU sunt pe drumul meu. Puteţi merge în spatele" the man replied.
"Vă mulţumim foarte mult!" Simmons said with excitement and grabbed Fitz's hand and pulled him towards the back of the truck.
"What's going on?" Fitz said in amazement.
"Get in the back," Simmons said, and Fitz jumped into the back of the truck, and offered his hand to Simmons and he helped her in.
Once they were settled into the back of the truck, the man started the truck and drove off.
They were sitting next to each other, allowing their legs to stretch out in front of them. Fitz was staring at Simmons in amazement.
"I didn't know you could speak Romanian," he said, "when did you learn that?"
Simmons laughed, "Well I don't really speak Romanian, I put together a very broken sentence," she said, "but my parents enrolled me in language courses before University. Some of it stuck with me."
"I'll say," Fitz smirked. "That was pretty impressive. What did you ask him?"
"I asked if he could take us to Bucharest. Since it's the largest city in Romania, we'll have the best chance of getting what we need there. Also, I told him we're married and that we ran into some trouble. I thought it was important to give him a reason as to why we look so...ragged." she said, motioning to their torn and dirty clothes "and I didn't think telling him we were being held captive by terrorists would exactly be helpful to us." She said with a small smirk.
"Good call," Fitz replied.
The ride was bumpy, especially being in the back of the truck, with no seatbelts or seats. Fitz eventually put his arm around Simmons shoulder to steady them, and pulled her close. She put her head on his shoulder, and even though she tried her best to stay awake, not even the bumpy ride could prevent her from drifting off.
Fitz looked down at his best friend, the love of his life, sleeping peacefully on his shoulder. They were safe—for now, and he knew they had to get back to the team. As hard as he tried to stay awake, the past few days of intensity had gotten to him, and he passed out.
Fitz was woken by a voice, "Hello, hello, e timpul să vă treziţi". He slowly opened his eyes and was momentarily confused by where he was, when it all snapped back into focus. He looked up at the truck driver smiling at him. It was now nighttime. He looked down towards Simmons' sleeping figure, curled into him and lightly rubbed her arm.
"Jemma, Jemma, time to wake up."
She groaned slightly and opened her eyes with much difficulty, focusing on him. "Leo? What's going on?"
The man looked at Simmons and said, "AM nevoie pentru a opri la somn. Casa are camera pentru tine"
Simmons immediately became more alert when hearing him, "Vă mulţumim," she responded
Fitz looked at Jemma, "what's going on?"
"He said he needs to stop to sleep for the night, and the house has room for us as well." She said. "Do you think we can trust him?"
"We don't really have a choice," Fitz said, as he got out of the truck and helped Simmons down.
They made their way, hand in hand, inside a tiny little house next to the dirt road and were welcomed by an older woman who looked genuinely thrilled to have them there.
Simmons explained that she and Fitz had been vacationing in the Romanian countryside, in a little cottage, and they were attacked by thieves. Since the thieves took everything they had, money, cell phones, passports, and the cottage had no electricity, they had no way to call for help, which is why they were found walking on the side of the road. Even though it wasn't true, it was a legitimate cover story, and the man and woman believed every second of it. The plump little lady, Maria, was distraught to hear their story, and provided them with a hearty meal, which both Fitz and Simmons were more than grateful to receive. Thinking back to the underground bunker where they had been held, Sharon and her people hadn't fed them, and they had been running on too much adrenaline to notice. But now, they were famished and ate what was put in front of them without a second thought, especially Fitz as usual, whom ate double the amount of anyone else, and Maria chuckled, as she watched him eat.
After dinner, the woman insisted they wash up. Fitz and Simmons took turns washing themselves thoroughly, revelling in the feeling of cleanliness and scrubbing themselves clean. Simmons was grateful to wash off her days old makeup that felt as if it had caked itself onto her face. After they both felt fresh and clean, Maria had provided them with some old clothes she still had from when her children lived with her. They fit them well, and Simmons was over the moon that she was wearing jeans again.
After hugging Maria and thanking her, she offered them the guest bedroom in her tiny house, said goodnight, and closed the door with a small smile. Fitz and Simmons looked at the tiny bed that occupied the centre of the room.
"I'll sleep on the floor," Fitz echoed from Greece.
"No you will not. I don't care how small the bed is, we're both sleeping in it." Simmons said with an authority in her voice that Fitz wouldn't dare question.
They both got in opposite sides, laid down, and faced each other, not taking their eyes off the other. Finally, Fitz brought his hand to Simmons' face and lightly caressed her cheek, "I was so worried about you. I don't think I've ever been so scared in my life," he said, with the most sincere look in his eyes.
A light blush crept up on Simmons' face. Could he actually want to be with me? She thought. No. Don't be ridiculous Jemma, he's your best friend, he was just worried about me because we love each other as friends, nothing more.
She lightly placed her hand on top of where his was resting on her face and gripped it firmly, "I'm ok Leo, they didn't hurt me. I'm just glad you're ok. While I was waiting for you in that cell, I was terrified out of my mind, and I felt so useless. I couldn't help you, and it was awful," she said in shame.
Useless? How could you ever be useless? he thought. To me, you're the most important person in this entire world.
"No Jemma, don't ever say you're useless, because you're far from it." Fitz said sternly. "You were right next to me in that lab. I heard you giving me hints, helping me calibrate the machine. I heard you in my head. You were right there next to me." He said with a loving look in his eyes. "And we made it out. We're safe for now, and we should sleep. We have a big day tomorrow."
Simmons gave a small nod, and Fitz leaned forward and gave Simmons a light kiss on her forehead. She shivered at the contact, and relished the feeling of their closeness.
"Goodnight Jemma."
"Night Leo," she said as she turned to the other side, away from Fitz.
Simmons could feel Fitz shift next to her, and then he placed his arm around her middle.
"Is this ok...?" he asked hopefully.
"Yes," she replied, "makes me feel..."
"Safe," they both said at the same time, and they nodded.
Fitz pulled her closer to him and tightened his hold on her. They let their bodies mould into one another, both their hearts pounding furiously, their minds drifting to other things they could be doing, thinking about their lips pressed against the others, their hands gripping each others skin, the salsa they shared in Greece, and how much they truly loved each other.
After their hearts calmed down, they both fell into a peaceful sleep, holding each other till dawn.
They were both woken up by a knock at the door by their driver, Andrei, saying something in Romanian.
Simmons responded in a raspy morning voice, which Fitz found to be very attractive.
"What did he say?" Fitz said in an equally raspy voice.
"He said we leave in 30 minutes. We should get ready," Simmons answered as she started to untangle her limbs from Fitz's. "Oh and good morning," she said, looking towards Fitz and giving him a grin.
"Good morning Mrs. Williams," he said with a smile, remembering their morning in Greece.
Simmons slowly slid out of bed and stretched, pointing her palms to the sky, and arched her back until she felt relief. Fitz watched her with intrigue as she stretched, watching as she moved her body in ways he had seen her do in the lab many times before, but now he found he couldn't take his eyes off her. She gave a little sigh of delight when her back cracked, and Fitz found himself having to look away, otherwise who knows what he would have done.
Fitz threw his head back on his pillow and sighed, "Is it bad that I just want to stay here?" he said with a chuckle.
Simmons looked towards him with a smile, "I do too. The past few days have been so horrendous; it would be nice to just relax for a while. But we have to get back to the team. They're probably searching high and low for us."
Fitz looked back up at her, "What we need, is a plan." And they quickly discussed what they would do.
30 minutes later after they had washed up and eaten breakfast, they hugged Maria in thanks for the food, shelter, and clothes, wished her a good life, and were off once more for Bucharest.
Two hours later, they arrived in Bucharest, the largest city in Romania, thanked Andrei for his kindness and set off on their own.
"Can we go to a consulate to contact SHIELD?" Simmons asked.
"No, SHIELD isn't affiliated with any one particular country, we can't go through a consulate. I'd say we could go to the British consulate, personally, to use a phone to contact our families, but it's too dangerous. Sharon probably assumes that would be our first option, so we should avoid that." Fitz said.
"Then we need to find a SHIELD European affiliate," Simmons said, "There isn't one in Romania. Where's the nearest one?"
"Paris." Fitz said.
"Alright then, we need to get to Paris," Simmons said. She shook with excitement. She hadn't been to Paris since she was a small child, and now she would be going to Paris, with Fitz! She knew they would most likely not be able to spend any time sightseeing, but nonetheless, she was still excited.
"Wait a sec," Simmons said, "We don't have any money. What are we suppose to do?"
"I'd suggest we could sneak on a train," Fitz gave a small chuckle, "But I don't think we'd be able to without being caught. We have to find a cash machine." He said, taking Simmons' hand and started walking briskly through the cobblestoned streets of Bucharest.
"Cash machine? But we don't have any debit cards!" Simmons said.
"Skye taught me a thing or two," he said with a smirk.
After finding a machine and trying to look as inconspicuous as possible, Leo attempted to hack it.
"I didn't even know you could hack those," Simmons said, watching Fitz with intrigue.
"Apparently it's quite simple actually," he said, while pressing random buttons and typing in code through the keypad.
"What if we get caught?" Simmons asked quietly.
"We'll most likely get thrown in jail," he said quietly, "So we'll have to make sure we don't. Keep watch. If anything looks suspicious, tell me."
It took Fitz a few more minutes to figure out how to hack the system properly, "Skye would've had this done minutes ago, I need to brush up on my hacking skills," Fitz said with a scowl.
He withdrew 500 Euros, enough to get them on a train and have accommodations, but not enough to send up a red flag in the system. They had to be careful. While Simmons was standing guard, she noticed a man that seemed to be paying careful attention to her and Fitz.
"Leo..." Simmons said.
"Mhh," he hummed while counting the money.
"I think someone is on to us."
He whipped his head around to look at the man, who quickly turned away, realizing he had been made. The man immediately got on his cell phone and called who could've been anyone, Sharon's people, or maybe even the police.
"We have to go," Fitz said, and grabbed Simmons hand, and started walking briskly in the other direction, but not fast enough to cause alarm. They walked about a block before Fitz slightly turned his head to see if the man was following them. He was, and he was close.
"Shit," Fitz mumbled under his breath. "He's following us," he said to Simmons.
They were close to a busy restaurant, with lots of customers and live entertainment, a perfect crowd to disappear into.
"Quick, in the restaurant!" Fitz said, leading the way.
They pushed past the people waiting for seating, passed the servers, past the bar and the bathrooms, through the kitchen, much to the chef's dismay, and through the back door, which led to a small alley.
"We have to keep moving," Fitz said, "Throw him off," their quick walking turned into a run, through twists and turns of the alley, having no idea where they were headed, but all they knew was that they couldn't get caught. They saw a tiny, almost undetectable alley, and swiftly turned into it. It was very cramped, with barely enough room for the two of them, their bodies pressed together tightly. They buried their faces in each other's necks to avoid being seen, and held their breath as their assailant ran past, luckily, not detecting them.
They stayed in the tiny alley for a short while longer, to ensure he was gone, their breath tickling each other's skin. They were pressed against one another so tightly, that they could feel the rapid heartbeat of each other, thinking it was from the running, when in fact, it was from their close proximity to one another. They slowly emerged from the alley, catching their breath.
"That was close," Simmons said with a big sigh, willing her heart to calm down.
"Way too close," Fitz replied, "We need to get out of Romania as soon as possible."
Once they found their way out of the alley, they got directions to the nearest train station and made their way there.
After buying their train tickets and boarding the train, they sat in their individual sleeper compartments and looked outside as the countryside flashed by them.
"Two days from now, we'll be in Paris and everything will be fine," Fitz said, looking at Simmons.
"We'll be reunited with the team-" she said
"Be back in our lab-"
"Be safe again-"
"And things will go back to normal-" Fitz cut off.
They both stopped. Neither of them knew what normal was anymore. Neither of them knew if they wanted normal after everything they had experienced. All they knew was that they needed to find Coulson and the others, and that they wanted each other. Forever and always. Everything else faded from importance and they stood out in each other's minds as the single most important thought, casting everything else aside.
"Yeah...I guess things will be back to normal in two days," Simmons said, never wanting her adventure with Fitz to stop.
Little did they know, their adventure was far from over, and that one of Sharon's men was on the train.
Dun dun dun! Hope you guys enjoyed this chapter! Please review if you did!
