Disclaimaer: I don't own Grey's Anatomy, I just borrowed the name of the characters for entertaining, no intention to violate any copyrights.
A/N : Thank you all for the support, I'm really really glad that you like the story and the direction I'm heading to.
I'll try to write another chapter over the weekend. No promise because I don't know why, in the evening when I sat down in front of the computer, couldn't help to make gif set instead. Anyway, I was saying, I'll be away from home for another 3 weeks from the middle of next week. So if you don't see any update, see you after the premier.
Big thanks to my outstanding beta Calzonaforever35. You are the best, you know that, right? (Of course you do ;-) )
After Webber excused himself from the conference room, Callie and Arizona remained in the chairs for another 5 minutes. The brunette clutched the copy of her results with both hands, gazing at it with glassy eyes. Arizona turned her body to face her girlfriend fully, and didn't dare to touch the dull looking woman. Instead putting an arm on the back of Callie's chair, and palming the other hand on the table, her finger tips just millimeters away from the tan arm.
A beep from the doctor's pager startled the both of them. Arizona pulled away slightly to check the machine, finding that it was a page from the clinic.
"It's the clinic…" She looked up to find Callie's looking back at her. "I should go."
"Yeah, right. You should go." Callie pulled her eyes back to the piece of paper in hand. "Your ex-girlfriend is waiting." She said sourly.
"Callie, please don't do this. It's a job, and I told you Colleen wasn't my girlfriend. We talked about this before, didn't we?" The blonde sighed.
"You told me she wasn't your girlfriend, that you were with her for months but she was never your girlfriend." The brunette said with a sneer. "For what I saw earlier, your non-girlfriend obviously hasn't got over you yet. Well being that she is going to be working with you closely everyday, surely there's more than time to pick up where you two left off."
"It was complicated, ok? I told you it was in the past…" Arizona put her hand on Callie's forearm, relieved when the jealous Latina didn't shake it off. She squeezed the arm slightly and stroked it with her thumb.
"And you lied to me! You said you hired a nurse from New York, a male nurse! If I didn't come today, I would have never known you actually brought your ex-girlfriend in to your clinic, would I?" Callie pursed her lips, and dropped her eyes back on the paper. Of course she remembered Arizona told her what she had with Colleen, or other woman before the two of them were together. Arizona said it crystal clear that those women didn't mean anything at all. But still, jealousy was a green eyed monster.
"Callie you have to stop it. You're starting to think crazy, ok!" The doctor cupped the olive cheek with her free hand, and brought the brown eyes to meet hers. "Bailey and Carol, the nurse manager hired the male nurse, he should have arrived this morning but the flight was delayed, and Carol sent someone to cover the clinic for the day. Just for today. I didn't know they sent Colleen, I was in a surgery. Which again, Colleen and I, we were not dating, we were nothing but… fuck buddies, ok? It sounds cheap and dirty, and I'm certainly not proud of it. But we were never more than that, that was it."
Callie chewed the inside of her bottom lip, looking at the sky blue eyes in front of her she found nothing but sincerity. Of course deep down she knew there had been nothing to question about the blonde, but again she couldn't control the monster inside.
"And Ann?"
"What about Ann? There was nothing between me and Ann." Arizona raised her eyebrows in confusion.
"Ann's sister. Mark said you nailed her sister when she was babysitting."
"Remind me to kill that bastard." Arizona gritted her teeth. "She wasn't babysitting per se. There was this one time I drove Ann back home, and her sister was there for Ann's three children. It was late and the woman was living in the direction that I needed to go home, so I gave her a ride. One thing led to the other, I ended up at her place. It was just a one time thing, she knew it, and Ann didn't talk about it."
"And half of the nurses in the hospital?"
"What about them?" Arizona frowned. She couldn't help but get annoyed now.
"Mark said…" Callie licked her lips and said in a small voice. She knew she was sounding more and more ridiculous, but she was just… insecure.
"Oh for the love of god!" Arizona threw her hands in the air, shot up from the chair. "Callie you're picking a fight. We talked about this! You freaked out last time and we talked about it! I had my past, I wasn't proud of it. And everything happened before you even entered my life."
"Don't yell at me. I freak out easy, ok? After all I've been through, my family, Erica, Malena, George, now you and… and… and… Joy terrifies me, ok?" Callie let out a deep breath. Her tearful big brown eyes followed the pacing woman's every move. "I had a great time in school, with my family, then BAM! Erica happened. I was happily in love with Malena, and BAM! Cancer killed her. Now everything's going fine, and you and I are in a good place. My father finally reconciled with me out of the blue… I just know something bad is going to happen. I'm scared the happiness will be taken away from me again. I just… I can't…"
Arizona rushed forward in two strides, kneeled down to Callie's side next to her thigh, and enveloped both of Callie's hands with hers in a tight hold. She tilted her head to gaze into the dark brown eyes. Then she chewed her lips for a second and then let out a heavy sigh.
"You have nothing to worry about, I will never ever leave you. You know I'm a doctor, and I know how to take care of my body. I have check ups every year, aaaaaand you promised me you won't run again, remember? You're stuck with me." She smiled when the woman finally broke out a chuckle. A tear escaped from one of the big brown eyes, and Arizona reached out to wipe it away with her fingertips. They shared this intimate moment for another minute until the pager went off again. After checking the little box, the blonde let out an apologetic smile.
"I really have to go to the clinic now. How about, we go down together, and I take the opportunity to officially introduce you to my colleagues as my girlfriend?" Arizona stood up on her feet, and tugged the brunette up by their linked hands. "That could drive every other woman away once they know I have such a gorgeous girlfriend."
Callie didn't answer, instead she leaned down to capture the pink lips for a soft kiss. Before the doctor could deepen the kiss, she released the lips, kissed down to the cream flesh above the collarbone, and sucked on it harder than she should.
Arizona knew what her girlfriend was doing. She didn't stop it but chuckled lightly.
"Ok ok, brand me as you want, but not too deep. Bailey is gonna give me the glare."
Pulling away to review the little work she did, Callie gave a toothy grin and brought a finger to caress the hickey. "Ok, that will do. They'll definitely know you're mine."
"Satisfied ? We really have to go now. The sooner I finish the working in here, the sooner I can meet you tonight. Then we can talk about my life in the hospital these last few years." Arizona stood on her toes to give her girlfriend a quick kiss, then dropped their hands walking toward the table to pick up the folder that Webber left them, obtaining the information of the upcoming Med school exam, and some more papers sent from most importantly, the result of Callie's previous Med school examination. "We need to clear the air before you start the internship here. I don't want you to have any cage fights with any of the nurses."
Smiling Arizona turned around to pass the folder to the brunette, linking their free hands together to pull her toward the door.
"Arizona," Callie said when they were walking down the hall to the exit of the main building. "I'm not sure I want this."
Arizona turned around briefly to frown at her girlfriend who was walking a step behind her. "Want what?"
"This." The Latina held up the folder. She looked at the folder, and then the blonde. "It may sound crazy, but I don't wanna change anything. Internship, residency… It's too much. Can we just live in this moment? I'm happy just being a bartender, and you have no problem with dating a bartender, right? We're happy, we don't need any big changes in our lives, right now y'know."
Arizona stopped to open the door for the rambling woman. She held it open and let Callie pass through first.
"You're lucky I happen to love crazy women." They walked side by side toward the clinic. "You don't have to do it if you don't want to. But I'll say it's a big loss because according to the result of your previous exam, you were really good at it. I can't believe you had higher score than me."
"But it was years ago." Callie sighed. "I don't know if I remember at least half of it."
"Don't forget your girlfriend is a doctor, a pretty good one I may say so myself. Pretty AND good."
"And modest too." Callie wriggled her eyebrows, gave the doctor a playful sneer. Arizona smiled with her dimples displayed, proud of herself that she got to lighten the mood.
"And a lot of my friends are doctors, we will help you. Except for Mark, I am forbidding him from coming near you until I deal with him." Arizona joked as they were passing the back door of the clinic. "We'll talk about this tonight. I'll come over to yours after I 'm finished with work. We'll order pizza, open a bottle of wine, play some music, and lay everything out to on the table and talk."
Busy talking to her girlfriend and not looking where she was going, Arizona almost knocked down a flower basket that was placed by the door. She let out an 'oops' and then used both hands to stable the rocking flower basket.
"Hey you're back! It's about time!" Bailey exclaimed as soon as she heard the disturbance and spotted her co-worker coming back.
Arizona looked over her shoulder, and there was Bailey standing by the registration counter. Ann and Colleen were sitting directly behind it, and there was a man standing next to Bailey. She gave her colleagues a sheepish grin, turned to look at her girlfriend, attempting to clasp their hands together to walk forward, but she found Callie looking over the registry counter pop-eyed.
Arizona opened her mouth about to question the panic stricken woman, but she heard a strange voice yell out.
"Callie!"
Turned around, she saw the man who was standing next to Bailey now jogging toward them with sparkle in his eyes. Looking back to the Latina, who took a step backward liked she just saw a ghost.
"What are you doing here, George?" The Latina asked in a shaky voice.
"I came here for you, Callie." The man grinned, held out a hand tried to touch the tall woman, but she took another step backward.
"You're George?" Arizona blinked several times, gazing between the two and then she gasped. "George O'Malley?"
"Why are you here?" Callie asked at the same time, but she knew the answer. A male nurse that came from New York, what was the odds of him being the man she was avoiding? She didn't think it could be possible but apparently nothing was impossible.
"I got a job here, I just started today. I should've be here this morning but the flight got delayed." George grinned wider, and got a little more anxious , he was so happy to see his wife again, even though the Latin woman didn't share the same feeling. He finally turned to the other woman who came in the clinic with his wife. "You must be Dr. Robbins, I'm George O'Malley, you can call me George. Sorry I was late, but I'm so ready to start."
George reached out a hand to his new boss. Arizona was still in shock, but she managed to shake the offered hand and plaster on a distinctive smile.
"Geo… George, welcome to Seattle." Took a deep breath to compose herself, the blonde cast a side glance at her girlfriend, who stared at the interaction of the man and woman with round eyes.
"Thank you Dr. Robbins. If you don't mind, I would like to talk to my wife…"
"No! I served you the paper." Callie said between ground teeth. "All you have to do is to sign it and then everything is finished."
"Callie, I am not giving up on us. We are married. You're my wife." George took a small step forward, tilted his head to smile softly to the woman who was about two inches taller than him. "Can we talk? Can we just sit down and talk about it? Dr. Bailey said I need to go to the HR for some paper work and stuff. I suppose I'll be finished in about an hour."
"No, George. Please, go back to New York." Callie shook her head fiercely, and dropped the folder that was in her hand on the way to the door. "I can't… I can't deal with this right now."
The few people still in the clinic watched the whole scene unfold with their mouths agape, including Arizona. They watched the Latina as she ran out of the door, and the new male nurse chasing after her.
Arizona was interrupted by the question from her colleague, "what the hell just happened?" Bailey asked.
"George O'Malley is Callie's ex-husband." The blonde answered with downcast eyes. She walked over to pick up the forgotten folder on the ground. "She filed for an unilateral divorce months ago."
"What?"
"She left New York…" She signed, about to explain to Bailey but the door opened again. She swiveled her head to the sound and found only the dark haired man coming back in. He walked toward the two doctors with a shyly smile.
"I am so sorry. I was late in my first day and already caused a scene. Sorry Dr. Bailey. Sorry Dr. Robbins. I was just… surprised to see my wife in here. Did I say Callie is my wife? Well, for some reason I haven't seen her for a while. I was going to surprise her tonight but she was here already, can you believe that? Excuse me, do you two know Callie? I mean, are you friends with her because she has a pub across the street. She's great, isn't she?" Excitedly George started to ramble rapidly, totally oblivious to the embarrassing smile on the blonde doctor's face and the annoyed look from the black doctor.
"O'Malley, do I look like I'm concerned about your personal life? Do I look like I'm about to bounce up and down with you?" Bailey asked coldly, successfully stopping the nurse from talking.
"No ma'am."
"I thought so." Retreating her famous glare, Dr. Bailey called over her shoulder. "Ann, can you take George to HR for the paper works? And take the time to show him around in the main buildings? Thank you."
After the two nurses left the clinic, Bailey dragged her colleague by the elbow to one of the beds. Before she could shut the curtain, Alex strode over to them.
"Dude, what was that?"
"What was what?" The general surgeon answered in her regular flat tone.
"A male nurse? And that creep was married to smoking hot Callie the bartender? Come on!" Alex sneered with a lopsided smile.
"Mind your own business, Karev. Two patients are waiting to be treated." Bailey pulled over the curtain to shut the nosy resident on the other side.
Arizona flopped down on the bed with a heavy sigh. Bailey just looked at her and waited.
"What am I supposed to do, Miranda? I am dating his ex-wife and I am going to be working with him every day." The blonde dropped her head in her hands and groaned.
"Do you want me to fire him?" Hands on her hips, the shorter woman asked.
"Can you?" Arizona snapped her head up to look at her colleague with hope in her eyes. It just took her a split second to change her mind. "No you can't, and you shouldn't. I can't let you do this because of my personal problem. His ex-wife dating his boss can't be the reason he got fired."
"Are you sure?" Bailey questioned. She kept eye contact with the woman sitting on the bed in front of her, looking for any uncertainty from the usually confident surgeon. Who in turn let out a long deep breath and then nodded firmly. "Good. Because he seems like a good man, I don't want to sack him for no good reason. But of course if you decided to let him go, you have the final call because you're the reason we have this clinic."
"Miranda, you have to stop thinking like that. This is OUR clinic, we are equally important in here." Arizona stood up from the bed, patted the shoulder of the shorter woman. "I hate to ask you this, but do you mind if I leave now? I know we have a lot of work to do and I saw patients waiting, but can I take off, now? I want to go check on Callie."
"Sure, go. I'll take care of the things in here." Bailey pursed her lips and nodded.
"Thanks Miranda." She was about to slip out of the closed curtain, but stopped and turned back to the short woman. "Can you do me another favor? Not a lot of people know Callie and I are together yet. Not that I want to hide it, but with the O'Malley situation now, maybe…"
"I already know more than I should, and I could care less about your personal life." Bailey casually waved her away. "And I will tell Karev to keep his mouth shut."
"I knew it. I knew it. I fucking knew it." Callie murmured to herself all the way run across the street. She entered Horizon like a freight train. Ignoring the greetings from the few regular customers, she strode to the back.
"What's wrong, Callie?" Joe, still holding a bottle of beer in a hand and a glass on the other, followed his boss to the storage corner.
"George was in the hospital." The Latina found the box she was looking for. Tore open it and picked up a bottle of brand new tequila.
"What had happened to him? Is he ok?" The big man asked with his eyebrows raised up, but Callie shook her head in response.
"He was working in the hospital, across the street, right there."
"You're kidding, right? You're not kidding." Joe frowned, saw his boss took another bottle stuck it under her arm. "What are you gonna do?"
"I don't know." She passed by the man and walked toward the exit. "I just know when thing's are getting good, something bad is going to happen to me. Every freaking time!"
Not waiting for Joe to say more, Callie ran upstairs to her apartment. She locked the door like it could block away any evil spirit from her. Sitting one of the bottles of tequila on the coffee table, she twisted open the other one and brought it to her mouth for a big gulp.
The Latina started to pace around the living room, she downed another sip after every few steps. I knew it. I knew it. She kept saying to herself. I don't deserve happiness. I belong in hell.
Being with Arizona in the last few months was the happiest time she had for a while. Ever since Malena broke up with her, life to Callie lost its purpose. It lost the last drop of meaning after Malena slipped away in her arms. Having Arizona by her side, it was like this perky woman blew air into this floppy, air leaking shell every day. Little by little, Callie felt whole again. She felt loved again.
However, the reminder of her most devastated period of life had to choose to come back in this time.
Maybe it was a sign to her. I don't deserve to be happy. Maybe she should leave the woman she loved alone, before she got cancer, or killed by a gunman, or hit by a bus, or got into a plane crash.
A word flashed through Callie's mind.
RUN.
