Chapter 28

Carlos put down his newspaper when he heard the familiar giggles coming from somewhere. He glanced towards the entrance of Archfield Hotel coffee shop, and a smile came on his face when he saw Callie and Arizona entering the coffee shop hand in hand, for their breakfast date.

The two ladies were obviously having some kind of childish discussion. Callie tugged their linked hands causing Arizona to stumble backwards. She laughed out loud when the blonde lost her balance and bumped into her, and then Arizona turned around and bopped Callie on the nose. People around them stared because of the amusing antics, but they were just too happy to even care.

As soon as they spotted the man who stood up from the table, Callie dragged her girlfriend toward her father with a beaming grin on her face.

"Morning daddy." She let go of Arizona's hand to give her father a greeting hug and a kiss on the cheek.

"Good morning mija." Carlos hugged his daughter back, and then turned to the woman standing behind her. "Good morning Arizona."

"Good morning Mr. Torres." Arizona was about to give Carlos a handshake, but the man pulled her in for a hug instead.

"Call me Carlos." smiling to the blonde woman after the hug, and then gestured them toward the chairs at the table. "Have a seat."

His smile went wider when Arizona pulled the chair out for Callie before she sat down herself. The two women shared a sweet loving smile and apparently they were holding hands under the table.

"Oh don't let her fool you, daddy." Callie made a wry face after catching her father's smile. "She's being nice to me because you're here. Normally I'm the one to pull her chairs out and open the doors for her."

Arizona looked at her girlfriend with wide eyes, her cheeks turned a shade of pink and her mouth opened and closed a couple times. "Hey! I just opened the door for you in the parking lot."

"You said we were late. You opened the door to drag me out of the car because I was moving too slow." Callie cocked her head, smirking at her girlfriend's embarrassment in front of her father.

"I didn't!" The blonde blurted out, which brought a wider smile on Callie's face.

"Yes, you did!"

"I didn't." Arizona loosened their linked hand to slap on Callie's lap frisky.

"You…" Callie paused when a waiter approached with a coffee pot in hand. The well trained servant tried to look serious but a ghost of smile danced in his eyes, it wasn't every day that two grown women bantered like a couple of 8 years olds in the 5 star hotel coffee shop. "Coffee?"

"Yes, please." Both women answered. While the waiter poured the coffee in their cups, Callie leaned closer to the woman sitting next to her and whispered loudly, "You did."

"Calliope, that's enough." Carlos spoke, saving Arizona from this childish battle. Callie rolled her eyes and then clasped the soft hand with hers again.

"Are you two ladies ready to order?" The waiter asked when he finished pouring the coffee. Callie studied the menu in front of her, and Arizona questioned Carlos with her eyes, who answered her that he had ordered already.

"We'll have the pancakes, scrambled eggs, bacon,oh and breakfast sausages too. And croissants!" Callie ordered for her girlfriend and herself, the blonde just smiled to the waiter and nodded alone.

"Bacon and sausages? I thought you were a vegetarian." Carlos asked after the waiter took off. Arizona gave a timid smile and shook her head to deny it.

"No I'm not."

"Good." The man gave her a content smile. "I'm still trying to be OK with the whole… you know. I don't think I can take it if you turn Calliope into a vegetarian."

"Dad! I had a steak last night." Callie laughed at her father. In the meantime, she felt warmth in her heart. Her father was really trying to learn and understand this side of her life – even though it was typically stereotyped.

"I told you I'm catching up." He rubbed the back of his neck and smiled sheepishly at his daughter, who chuckled lightly back to him.

"Arizona, I hope you didn't mind me planning breakfast so early this morning, I know this is your day off." Carlos said after they all took a sip of their coffee.

"No no don't worry about it, I'm usually awake at this time even on holidays. By the way, I am so sorry that I missed dinner last night." The blonde gave a sad smile, then looked at her girlfriend. "Calliope told me you two had a great time."

"Yes, we did. I loved the restaurant, the foods was excellent! You sure know how to dine your girl." Carlos gave a wink and then nodded his approval, making both women laugh out softly. "And Callie told me you were in an emergency surgery, how did it go?"

"Oh, it went well." Arizona paused for a moment while the waiter delivered their food. "There was a patient named Kyle that came in to the clinic with his father. The poor boy's mother has early onset Alzheimer's, and she's only 40 years old; and her memory is already slipping away from her. Kyle has to take care of his mother, while his father goes to work during the day."

"How old is Kyle? It must be hard for him to take care of his mother and deal with his high school work." Callie asked before putting the forkful of pancakes in her mouth.

"No, he's not a high school kid, Calliope." Arizona raised her eyebrows, "he's only 8 years old."

"8 years old?" Carlos stopped cutting his food and frowned. "How can he possibly take care of his mother? He can't even take care of himself."

"I talked to Dr. Grey, the resident who is working on his mothers case. She said as soon as school finished, Kyle ran home to make late lunch for both him and his mom, and made sure she took her meds in their correct order; Stuff like that." The blonde picked up the syrup bottle to pour it on her pancakes. "Can you believe that? The poor boy."

"So what was the problem? Why did he need surgery?" Callie said while she gracefully took the syrup bottle out of the surgeon's hand. She hated it when Arizona put too much sugar on her pancakes. Arizona gave her a stink eye and continued.

"He had a lump on his neck." The blonde cocked her neck and pointed to the position. "When he was in the clinic, the lump was already as big as a cherry tomato. Turned out it was a cystic hygroma, pressing against his trachea and almost shut off completely. Luckily we caught it in time."

"Why did they wait so long to treat it? I mean, the size of a cherry tomato is quite big." Carlos asked. He was totally engaging in the story. Even though it was just a second time he met this woman, he had grown quite fond of her already.

"Taking care of an Alzheimer patient is a full time job, they put all their energy and time to the mother, as well as the money they have. The father was so nervous in the clinic because he wasn't sure we were free. He was afraid he couldn't afford it." Arizona put a piece of sausage in her mouth and hummed, "Callie, the sausage is good."

The Latina didn't say anything but took a sausage from her own plate to her girlfriend's, and was rewarded with a dimpled smile.

"Right, Calliope told me you're running a free clinic. It must be difficult. You'll have to deal with all kind of patients." Carlos picked up his coffee cup, asking the question and in the meantime observing the interaction between the two women. He couldn't suppress the content smile if he tried.

"Oh, not really all kind of patients, just pediatrics. I'm a general surgeon but my specialty is in pediatrics. The donators want us to concentrate on peds."

"Peds…" Carols nodded slowly. "because you like children?"

Callie chanced a gaze to her father, who wore an innocent smile looking back at her.

"Not really," Arizona spoke, making the other 2 people at the table look at her. "I mean, I like children but that's not the reason I became a peds surgeon. Pediatrics is hardcore and challenging, it takes a lot of willpower to touch a one pound premature baby, let alone operate on it."

"One pound? How can it survive?" Callie gasped and made a horrified face.

"Well, some could, and some couldn't." Arizona let out a bitter smile. "You'll get to see it when you start the internship in a few months."

"I don't even know if I'll pass the test." The Latina rolled her eyes. "You're thinking way too far ahead."

"We all know it won't be a problem, Calliope." The man chipped in. "Have you picked your specialty yet?"

"Dad, just because I'm going to take the test again, doesn't mean I'm going to practice ok?" Callie put down the fork, and sighed heavily. "And even if I passed the test, started to work in the hospital, I can only pick my specialty in the last residency year."

"Not necessarily." The blonde blurted out with a mouthful of pancakes. She took a gulp of coffee to wash it down quickly. "You can declare your interest even during the intern year. It depends on your resident and the attendings to give you the chance or not. In your case, you can have anything from any department… Except dermatology, I don't want you to hang out with them."

"Why?" Callie asked.

"Just… don't." Arizona ducked her head down, and concentrated on cutting the pancakes on her plate.

"But mija," Carlos interrupted before Callie could ask more. "I remember you told me you wanna be in cardio when you received the letter from Miller."

"Well… yea, I like the sound of it – Dr. Callie Torres, M.D., cardio. Seems cool." Callie chuckled to her father who gave her a wry face because of the answer.

"The head of cardio is my best friend and she's a great teacher, sure you'll be in good hands." Arizona shrugged. "Oh and Cristina declared cardio even before she started the internship, you have nothing to worry about."

"Carlos, are you sure you don't mind going to the hospital? You're leaving tonight. Maybe Callie can take you a little sightseeing while I go check on Kyle." Arizona asked when the three of them got out of Callie's car. She received a call from the chief said that there had something about Kyle Baker's case that they have to discuss. It wasn't urgent but the doctor decided to pay a visit during her day off, she wanted to go check on the poor boy. He deserved to have someone take care of him.

"I really don't mind." Carlos shook his head slightly. "Calliope knows that I'm not a sightseeing person. Take me to the museum or put me in a supermarket it has no difference."

His daughter shrugged, "that's true."

"For me, I think it will be more interesting to see the place you are having or going to have the adventures, and I want to visit the poor kid." Carlos continued to talk while they walked side by side toward the elevator. "Mija, have I told you, I took care of my abuela when I was 7?"

"Not really… I just remember you told me you and bisabuela were very close, and you loved her very much." Callie looked at her father with a surprised face. They got into the elevator and the surgeon pressed the button to her floor.

"We just arrived from Cuba. Your bisabuela was getting sick because she couldn't get use to the water here, or because she missed everything in Cuba. My parents had to work, and I was the big brother amongst my 6 siblings, so it was my job to take care of abuela, give her food and keep her warm. I didn't complain because she was my abuela." He gave a smile to the two women who listened to his story in deep silence.

"Dad, I know you miss her." The brunette linked her arm with her father's, and rested her head on the old man's shoulder.

"You know what would make me happy?" Carlos said, with naughtiness lingering in his voice. The women just looked at him with questioned eyes. "Get me some grandchildren. Make me an abuelo."

"Dad!" Callie exclaimed. Just then the door opened, in time. "Oh. Welcome to peds." Arizona said in a high-pitched voice and bolted out like an arrow. Callie followed, and left the laughing man behind.

Arizona led Carlos and Callie toward Kyle's room, shocked to see that the boy wasn't alone. Also that it wasn't his father sitting by his bedside.

"George? What are you doing in here?" Arizona asked in a small voice, because apparently Kyle was sleeping.

Snapping his head up from the book he was reading, George was surprised to see that there was Dr. Robbins, in her street clothes. He shifted in the seat and greeted the incomer. "Dr. Robbins, I'm here to spend some time with Kyle, his father is…" He stopped when he realized Dr. Robbins wasn't the only visitor. He shot up from the plastic chair.

"Callie, Mr. Torres." He gave the Torres' a small smile. Carlos gave him a smile in return, but Callie just glared at him behind her father.

Arizona didn't know what Callie wanted to do, but she knew it was impossible to keep this stand still going on. She walked toward the foot of the bed, picked up the chart and asked George. "Where is Mr. Baker?"

"He is with Mrs. Baker now. Dr. Grey told him the test result of Mrs. Baker was finished. They're with Dr. Shepherd now." George walked over to stand next to Dr. Robbins. Carlos shifted to the bedside to look at the little boy, who looked a little pale but slept peacefully in bed.

Callie stayed by the door frame, her arms crossed against her chest, staring at the shorter man with a frown.

"Did he complain about any discomfort? I see they gave him something for sleeping a half an hour ago." The blonde asked when she flipped through the chart. She could see her pissed off girlfriend from the corner of her eyes. The wheels in her head were turning and she was trying to figure out what she had to do.

"Yes, Kyle said he couldn't sleep last night because of the pain and he was scared. I told Olivia to give him something." He answered professionally.

"Ummm… George," Suddenly, Carlos addressed the male nurse. The woman standing by the door frame jerked, staring at her father with wide eyes. Luckily, the older man couldn't see her in this direction. "Do you know when his father will come back?"

"I don't know, sir." George said to his father-in-law deferentially, even though Carlos had no idea who the hell is this man in front of him. "He left about 20 minutes ago."

Being a child of a Marine, one of the moralities the Robbins valued was honorable. Arizona knew she would regret this in the very next future but she could not not say it. "George was the one who saved this boy. The other doctor was about to send him off with some anti-inflammatory meds, but George came to me insist on running some more tests on Kyle. We didn't have time for a scan, and his airway started closing off right in the clinic; And because he was still in the clinic, we were able to send him to the OR in time."

"No, Dr. Robbins, I was just doing my job." George smiled sheepishly at his boss. To be honest, he was surprised Dr. Robbins didn't treat him terribly, like Dr. Yang, Dr. Karev and Dr. Avery. She even honored him in front of Callie's father.

"Then, you are doing your job well, son." Carlos nodded to the man, then he turned back to face the little boy, but then he found out his daughter stormed out of the room – or did she even enter the room?

He looked over to Arizona with a furrow between his brows, who gazed at the door with her mouth hung open. She wanted to follow her girlfriend to explain, comfort, or get punched… anything the Latina wanted. But she knew better than to leave Carlos and George alone in the room.

"I should go," George spoke up after a couple seconds of silence. "My break is about to end, I should go back to the clinic. Nice to meet you Mr. Torres. See you later Dr. Robbins."

After a handshake with Carlos, the nurse walked out the room quietly.

Instead of taking the elevator, he pushed open the fire escape exit about to take the stairs. Unexpectedly, he found his wife standing there, had her back against the wall, hands on her hips. She nearly jumped a meter high when she saw George pass through the door.

"For the love of God, George can you stop being so… stalkerish, can you?" The Latina yelled at the man as soon as her heart rate slowed down. "Everywhere I go, you have to be there too? Can you just… get the hell out of my life already?"

"Stalkerish? You are calling me a stalker?" George stood still with his teeth set and his wide eyes flashing. "You are my wife. You left me for no good reason and now you are calling me a stalker?"

"I've said this a thousand times, George. Let me go!" Callie turned to face her separated husband, hands flying in the air furiously. "Stop stalking me. Stop popping up. Stop sneaking around my father. Just go, go back to New York already!"

Taking 2 steps closer to the furious Latina, George took a deep breath and gazed deep into the brown eyes. "Callie, I said it before, and I am going to say it again. I, George O'Malley, knowing this woman's love for me and returning it, realizing her strengths and learning from them, recognizing her weaknesses and helping her overcome them, I take Callie Torres to be my lawfully wedded wife."

It was the vows George said on that day. Callie didn't really remember the details, but she had a faint memory about this…

"I meant every word I said. And I told you I'll wait for you, patiently." Callie didn't say anything but stared at the greens eyes, he continued. "I didn't sneak around, Callie. I was in Kyle's room because I was worried about him. I didn't plan on telling your father about us, at all. You were the one freaking out. You were the one showing him something had happened."

"I…"

"You should get back there, I'm sure he's about to come looking for you." Taking a step back, the male nurse gave his wife a bitter smile. "See you around, Callie."

"Arizona," Carlos looked across the bed, where the doctor was currently standing, checking the IV bag. "Who is George?"

Arizona jerked slightly. She knew this clever man would ask, just didn't expect him to ask her when Callie wasn't around.

"He… George…" Well, normally the hardcore peds surgeon wouldn't stutter, but in a situation like this she couldn't prevent it. "You really should ask Calliope, I can't answer for her."

"Yeah, she can't answer for me." Appearing in the door frame just in time to catch the question, Callie let out a deep sigh. "I'll tell you everything, but can we go somewhere more private?"

"Callie, you can go to my office around the corner." Walking around the bed, Arizona strode to her girlfriend and clasped their hands together.

"Are you sure?" Callie asked in a small voice, the blonde nodded in confirmation.

"Yes, you two talk about this. I'll go talk to the chief in the meantime. You tell the nurse to page me or just call me when you're finished."

Arizona led the Torres' to her office. None of them said a word during the 30 second walk. The doctor unlocked the door and let them walk in. She was about to close the door for them, but Callie grabbed her hand and leaned forward for a kiss of courage, she really needed it.

Letting out a heavy sigh on the outside of the closed office door, the peds surgeon walked toward the chief's office. Luckily, the man wasn't in surgery, and more than happy to see his fellow surgeon.

"Dr. Robbins, thanks for coming in on your day off."

"No problem, sir. I wanted to check up on the kid from yesterday anyway." Arizona smiled to her boss while sat down on one of the chair across the big man. "Before I forget, Callie decided to take the test again. I'll help her to fill out some application tomorrow. Her father is in town, I don't think we'll have time to do it today."

"Oh that's great. And she'll apply for the internship and residency here, right?"

"She is going to take one step at a time." Arizona chuckled. "For the moment she's on board with re-taking the test only, but I'm sure she'll commit to it very shortly. I'll make sure of that."

"I don't need to know the details, Dr. Robbins." The man cleared his throat and shook his head slowly. He picked up a folder next to him. "Well, there's something that has happened, and we need to settle."

The light and easy mode had shifted. Arizona sat straight in her seat, looking at her boss confused.

"The patient you operated on yesterday, Kyle Baker." Webber opened the folder slowly. "His mother, Allison Baker is currently in the hospital for her Alzheimer treatment. Their insurance had mixed out. They have to pay for Kyle's operation themselves."

"But… he was a patient from the clinic, can't the clinic cover the cost?" The doctor leaned her upper body forward unintentionally. She was nervous because she had kind of promised Mr. Baker that this operation was free.

"Dr. Robbins, the clinic covers the basic medication cares. But the surgery that involved surgeons, nurses, the OR time… those are not a part of the clinic care." The chief entwined his hands on the desk. He saw the shadow of disquiet flickering over the blue eyes in front of him. He sighed. "Did you promise Mr. Baker anything?"

"He asked me if it was really free of charge, I told him yes." The blonde shifted her gaze to the folder under the chief's hands. "Can we make this a pro bono case? I am sure Mr. Baker won't be able to pay for it. And Kyle will feel bad if he cost his family money. I… I don't mind to donate my time. And… and… and I can tell to Karev and the nurses."

Dr. Webber squinted at the peds surgeon. He was not going to say anything yet because obviously, the woman was trying to find the way to cover the costs, without the Bakers having to pay anything. He wanted to see how far she was gonna go.

"Or, I can pay it myself. Tell the billing office to send it to me, I'll write a check." Arizona gave her boss a firm nod. She was determined to take care of it herself.

"Dr. Robbins," The chief said slowly. "I know you want to help the patient, but there is a line you shall not cross."

Arizona frowned at her boss.

"You are a doctor, you can help the patient medically, that is all. You cannot pay for their bills every time when an unfortunate family comes into the clinic. And the hospital has a limited pro bono budget, we cannot grant it to every case."

"What do you mean?" The furrow between her brows got deeper. "I can't pay for the bill even I offered?"

"I'm saying, you don't issue a personal check to pay for it." Webber leaned back to his chair, closed the folder on the table. "I will sign off this pro bono case. This is just an exceptional case, and your pro bono budget is finished, don't come to me for another case before January 1st of next year."

A dimpled smile spread on the angelic face slowly. If this was not her boss, Arizona sure she was going to give him a big hug, and a kiss on the cheek.

"Don't look so cheerful. This is a warning, Dr. Robbins. Don't promise every family that you'll give them surgery free of charge. The least you can do is come and talk to me first." Webber looked dead serious toward the blonde, who bit her bottom lip to try to repress the smile. "Now get out. I have some phone calls to make."

Shooting up from the chair in an instant, Arizona thanked the chief again and excused herself.

Back on the peds floor, Arizona assumed Callie and her father were still in the office talking, deciding not to disturb them, she went to different wards to check on her favorite patients, which was a lot. When she arrived in one of the rooms, Nurse Bella who was changing an IV bag, was surprise to see the doctor was still around.

"Dr. Robbins, why are you still here? I thought you left already."

"No, I went to meet the chief." Arizona gave her a polite smile. "And my friends are still in my office, I'm waiting for them to finish their meeting."

"No, they left about 10 minutes ago. I saw the man came out of your office."

The blonde frowned. She turned around and walked to her office in fast pace. She pulled out the phone and found no miss call or message, what was happening?

Pushing open the door, Arizona found her girlfriend alone on the couch. She sat with her legs crossed, her chin in her hand propped by the elbow against the armrest. The watery big brown eyes told Arizona that Callie was crying.

Arizona ran toward the couch, sat down next to the brunette and wrapped a protective arm around the defeated woman. Her free hand landed on Callie's knee, giving a firm squeeze.

"Oh honey, that bad, huh?"

"I don't know." Callie answered after a deep breath. "I told him about George, how we started, how we got married in Vegas, and how we came to today, that he refused to leave me alone. He didn't say anything, Arizona. Dad just sat here."

"He wasn't mad or… disappointed… or…?" Arizona asked softly.

"No! Nothing! And then he said something about forgetting to make some calls, then he just walked out of the room!" Callie exclaimed, a new wave of tear pouring out of her eyes.

"Calliope…" Arizona was about to console her girlfriend, but her pager took this time to go off. She picked up the pager from the pocket and read, "911 from the PIT… I'm not even on call today." Placed the pager on the coffee table, the blonde put her hand back on Callie's knee.

"Maybe it's too much information at once, he just needs time to think it through." She placed a chaste kiss on the raven hair. "Or maybe he really forgot to call…"

Arizona wasn't able to finish. There was a knock on the door and then someone barged in the office. There was one of the nurses on the floor.

"Sorry Dr. Robbins, you have a page from the ER. They said it was about a Mr. Torres."

From the office to the ER, Arizona hadn't let go of the hand of the shaking woman. She knew there must have thousands of scenarios running in the Latina's head, because she was having them in her head too.

What she or even Callie didn't expect when they arrived in the trauma room was, Carlos lying lifelessly in the middle of the room, doctors and nurses fumbling around him with medical instruments, calling orders and the beeping sounds of the machines…

And there was a man standing in the corner of the trauma room, looking as pale as a paper…

"George! Why are you in here?" Callie screamed from the top of her lungs.
