Chapter 31

Day 6

"No, I'm not doing it." Arizona rolled her eyes. This was one of the most ridiculous ideas she had heard over the years.

"Come on Arizona, it'll be fun; Besides, it's been a while since I've seen you naked. I wanna see you." Callie whined over the camera of her laptop.

"You do see me." The blonde said coldly to her laptop. She leaned a little too close to the camera purposely, and her face took over the whole screen on Callie's end. "Is it clear enough?"

"You know that isn't what I meant." Callie said with a pout. "Skype sex is so common. I mean, it's like phone sex or sexting, but with vision. I haven't touched you in a week. Can you please take off your shirt so at least I can see my girls?"

Arizona leaned back against the couch with her arms crossed on her chest, unimpressed by the pleading from 3000 miles away.

"You know what? I'll go first." Callie said as she pulled the night shirt over her head, revealing her naked chest on the screen. She couldn't hold her triumphant lopsided smile when her indifferent girlfriend's eyes widened with arousal. "Can you take your shirt off for me now, please?"

Blue eyes lingered on the image on the computer screen. Normally the blonde surgeon couldn't think straight when those babies were displayed in front of her. But this time, her mind had won. Probably because the real things were on the other side of the country. "No, I'm not going to take off my clothes and touch myself in front of a computer. This is insane. Who knows what's going to happen if someone hacked into our computers?"

"No one is going to hack into our computers, Arizona. We aren't someone important." Callie chuckled, exaggeratedly shook with laughter and flipped her hair over the shoulder. She knew her girl was about to break…

The screen went black.

"Arizona? Damn, did I lose the connection?" Callie fumbled with the keyboard and the mouse. Skype was new to her. She just had a beginner's lesson with her dad's assistant 3 days ago in the hospital ward, while Carlos was reading some company documents on his hospital bed.

"No, I'm still online. I just covered my laptop with a towel." Arizona's voice murmured through the speaker. The brunette groaned and picked up the shirt from the end of the bed. Arizona's voice came again. "I'm not taking off the towel unless you put your shirt back on."

"I'm putting it on!" Callie answered with annoyance. She put the shirt on a little rougher then she should have. And flopped back against the headboard with extra force, making the laptop bounce on her lap.

"Hey, don't give me that attitude." Arizona took the towel off in time to see the temper tantrum the brunette just threw. "You should've known what a crazy thing you just asked me to do."

"It was supposed to be fun." Callie still had the pout on her face, mumbling something unrecognizable under her breath.

"Hey hey, what're you saying? Just because I don't know Spanish doesn't mean you can curse me out in it." Arizona questioned with a ghost of smile in the corner of her lips. She and Callie were together for months, but this was the first time she had heard the foreign language fly out from the full lips fluently. It was kinda hot.

"I was not cursing at you crazy. I was saying I'm the moron who misses you like crazy but you don't seem like you miss me at all." Callie sighed heavily. Her lips twisted and she tried to hold her overload emotion.

"You know that's not true. And it's really unfair. Just because I don't want to take off my shirt for the world to see, it doesn't mean I don't miss you." The blonde pulled the collar down by a finger teasingly and smirked toward the screen. "If you want this, come back and see it in person."

"It's not for the world to see…" Callie sighed again. How could she get such a stubborn girlfriend? "Forget it. I just wanna say I miss you."

"I miss you too."

Day 22

"Karev! Where are the baby blankets?" Arizona stopped the passing resident by the arm and asked curiously.

"Hunt took them. He gave it to the doctors from Syria." Alex said casually, without looking up from the chart he was reading.

"All of them?" Arizona scowled at the man and snatched the chart from his hands. "Do you have any idea how long it took to get those delivered? NICU is low on blankets now, what should I do? Wrap the babies in plastic?"

"I'm sorry. Hunt said he'll talk to you." Alex looked at his boss with wide eyes. "I'll check with the supplier and see if the next shipment could come faster. Geez, relax, ok?"

"I don't need you to tell me to relax. You just… do your job." The blonde shoved the chart back to the resident and turned around to the elevator. She just got a page to the ER. Alex followed her.

"I am doing my job. You've been really wind up lately. You made everyone on the floor get nervous around you."

"I'm just tired." Arizona pressed the call button irritably. "Workload is getting heavy and the clinic is packed all the time."

"Workload is always heavy. You know you don't really need to work that much of time in the clinic. You haven't taken a day off in 2 weeks." The man stated. He genuinely cared about his favorite teacher a lot. "You're driving yourself crazy. When was the last time you got laid? You're really tense."

"It's none of your business Karev!" Arizona looked at the resident with wide eyes. They had made inappropriate comments to each other from time to time, but this one just came at a very wrong time.

"I'm just saying." Alex held up his hands. "Callie isn't around, and she bailed on you last weekend, consider it as a break. She won't blame you if you…" The man kept mumbling next to his boss, but Arizona cut in on his suggestion.

"Stop it! What do you know about relationships? How many interns and nurses have you slept with this week?" She said angrily and gave her protégé a glare of disgust. Luckily, the elevator had arrived. "Don't forget to check the post-op of the kid in 3425."

That was right, Callie promised to come back for a short visit last Friday, but she had to cancel at the last minute because Carlos wasn't feeling very well. Even though the two had phone calls almost every day, and skype whenever possible, the insecurity inside the blonde was eating her alive. She kept reminding herself that Callie promised to return to Seattle, but so many factors could change a person's mind, especially when the person was 3000 miles away.

Arizona sighed heavily. She pulled her cellphone out from the pocket and sighed again. She missed a call from her girlfriend this morning, but it had been turned off when she called back an hour later. It had been 4 hours since then, Callie still hadn't called her back after she left a message on the machine.

The ER was busy as always. It was never a good thing to be paged to the ER, it meant someone got hurt. And if they paged Peds, that meant a child was involved. Stepping in the trauma room, Arizona released a breath because there was a cute little girl sitting up on the bed next to her mother, not crying in tears for pain or panic, just calmly sitting next to her mother, even though there was an angry bruise on her lower right cheek and forehead. Based on the look of her, she wasn't injured too badly.

Before she approached the little girl, the chief pulled her aside and whispered to her.

"Dr. Robbins, the little girl is Maddy Carlson, 6 years old. Her father fell down the stair and pulled her along. It seems Maddy landed on him so she doesn't appear to have any big injury." The chief said with a serious face, the furrow on his forehead showed that there was more. Arizona just nodded and waited for more information.

"The father is still in surgery. But um…" He chanced a glance to the mother sat next to Maddy, the peds surgeon followed his gaze. Maddy's mother also had a bruise on her face, and a faded bruise on her wrist. "It looks like a domestic violence case. I need you to give a full examination on Maddy, and call social service if it's needed,"

Arizona nodded again slowly. Cruelty to children makes her blood boil but she was going to keep it inside, she had to be professional and not scare the kid.

"Hey I'm Dr. Robbins," Arizona smiled to the mother and then turned to the little girl. "Maddy, I'm going to check on your face and your arms and your legs, try to make you feel better, ok?"

The girl looked at her mother, nodded to the nice looking doctor after got a small smile from mummy.

Arizona sat down on a rolling stool and then put on a pair of gloves, she asked. "Can you tell me why you're hurt?"

"She fell down the stairs." Mrs. Carlson rushed to answer for her daughter. "Her daddy was running on the stairs and Maddy was behind him. He slipped and accidentally pulled Maddy with him. He never meant to hurt our daughter, it was an accident. He loves Maddy."

"Ok…" The doctor gave a tight smile to the woman and then started to examine the 6 years old. Little Maddy flinched when the gentle hands touch her face, but she was brave enough not to cry.

"You are doing so well Maddy." Arizona pulled her dimpled smile wider, and then started to check on the little arms. "Your face is fine. There's a big, ugly bruise on your beautiful cheek but it will disappear after few days. Don't worry, ok?"

There were few more bruises on the arms but all looked pretty new, apparently just formed due to the fall. The blonde doctor shared a relieved gaze with her resident of the day.

"Mrs. Carlson, as far as I checked, except the bruise, there has no severe injury on Maddy. But just to be sure, I would like to arrange a full body X-ray to make sure of it." Arizona said to the mother but her focus was still on the little girl, she was examining Maddy's ankle. "Dr. Grey, call the X-ray tell them to spare the place for Maddy."

"Is my daddy going to die?" Maddy asked suddenly. All of the adults suddenly stopped what they were doing. Arizona tilted her head to look at the little girl, and then put a comforting hand on one of her knee.

"Don't worry Maddy, your daddy is going to be ok. We have other doctors saving him, he will be fine."

"Why he doesn't die?" Maddy asked again with a small pout on her little face. Arizona widened her eyes. "Mummy said that falling down the stairs will kill me so I have to be careful on the stairs. I pushed daddy down the stairs, why he doesn't die?"

Arizona walked across the hospital lobby with her head hung low. It was not a good day, she sighed. She turned around when she heard someone calling her from behind. Surprised to see it was Colleen walking up to her.

"Oh hi, Colleen." It had been a while since she saw or even talked to her old fling. Well, there had some ortho cases that they had to work together in an OR, but their interaction was limited in handing the instruments or asking for suction.

"How are you doing, Arizona?" Colleen stopped in front of the blonde doctor. Her hands shoved in her jeans pockets. "You look… upset."

"No, I was just thinking about a case." Arizona gave her a bitter smile and shrugged.

"I've heard about the little girl in pit. Poor thing." The nurse shook her head and sighed. And then she pointed to the front door of the hospital few feet away from them. "Are you leaving already?"

"Ya, I'm not feeling so well, so I decided to call it the day early. You're leaving too?" After getting a nod as answer, the two women walk toward the door side by side.

"So what is going to happen to the little girl?" Colleen asked.

"She's too young and the father is not going to press charges, so nothing is going to happen to her, so far." Arizona looked straight ahead and bit her lips with distress. "The little girl pushed her father down the stairs to protect her mother. It seemed he was drunk and chased his wife around the house with a bat."

"Oh my god. That's terrible." Colleen exclaimed, walked closer to her favorite doctor.

"The most terrible part is - she decided to stay by his side. She refused to report the abuse. Just hope the man could learn from this. What he did had affected his child." Arizona turned to look at the woman walking by her side. Too engaged in worrying about the patient, didn't realize Colleen had invaded her personal space.

"It sucks, no wonder you look so upset." The brunette nurse made a grimace, making the doctor chuckle lightly. Without noticing, they were close to Horizon. "Hey Arizona, it's still early, do you want to have a drink? You look like you can use one."

The nurse placed a soft hand on Arizona's forearm to stop their track, right outside the pub. Arizona caught the suggestive smile from the other woman. She remembered that look. Colleen added immediately, "If you don't want to go to Horizon, we can go to the other one down the block."

"No, it's not about that. Just- as I said, I'm just not feeling well." Arizona stepped back away from the short hair brunette subtly. "I should go home and get some rest."

"Come on," Colleen chuckled, tilted her head to the side and smiled to the doctor. "We can be friends. A drink wouldn't hurt."

"No, but um… Maybe a rain check? I really should get going. Bye Colleen." The blonde gave the nurse an apologetic smile and then swiveled around to stride away, not giving the woman another chance to try to convince her because God knew she really needed a drink. And to be honest, she was hungry for some contact. Not that she needed a hand on her body to get her off, but someone there to give her a consoling hug to tell her the world was not a horrible place. Or a soft kiss that could take away the commiseration she had for little Maddy. Or… simply a touch on the hand that can ease the loneliness she felt inside…

"Ugh!" Arizona groaned to herself while continued her path to head home. She pulled out her cellphone from the bag, sighed when there still had no incoming call or message whatsoever. It had been 8 hours since she left messages for her girlfriend. Something had happened and she didn't know what was going on.

She groaned again. Sighing heavily, she stepped in her building, and dragged her fatigued body back to her lonely apartment.

Something wasn't right – she knew it when she opened the door. First sign was… it wasn't locked. And there had music in the apartment. She didn't turn on the radio in the morning. Hell she didn't even have time to sit down in the kitchen for a cup of coffee this morning.

Looking over to the kitchen, there were grocery bags on the kitchen counter.

Arizona walked deeper into her apartment. A smile found a way to her face slowly when she found a jacket lay on her couch casually. The unmistakable leather jacket that turned her on in multiple occasions. A sound of the bathroom door opened, she turned to that direction and couldn't hold her wide smile anymore.

There was her girlfriend came out of the bathroom with a surprise on her face.

The blonde took a few steps striding toward the woman, and practically threw herself on Callie. She took the tanned face in her hands and then locked their lips together for an passionate kiss.

Callie didn't fight her. She wrapped her hands around Arizona's back to pull the woman closer to her. She let the blonde take the lead, closed her eyes to savor the feeling of having her girlfriend in her arms again, and moaned when the warm flesh slid between her lips.

They parted when air was needed. But Arizona quickly leaned forward to reclaim her lips again. Her thumbs caressed the soft cheeks slowly as she nipped and suckled the plump lips hungrily. Callie smiled in the kiss and ran her hands under Arizona's shirt, stroking the soft skin ever so gently.

After god knew how long it was that they kissed against the bathroom door, they broke the kiss and smiled to each other with a matching goofy grin of their faces.

"I've miss you so much." Arizona said, as her hands still cupping the face of her girlfriend. "Why didn't you tell me you're coming back today?"

"I planned to surprise you." Callie picked up one of the fair hand and led them to the couch.

"That's why I couldn't reach you all whole day?" Arizona said while settling herself down next to her girlfriend on the couch, bent one of her legs under the other, copying the same posture as Callie to sit face to face with the other. "I almost lost my mind."

"I just got here an hour ago, and then found out your fridge was almost empty." Callie picked up Arizona's hand, stroked the back of it with her thumb. "I just came back from the stores."

"You should have called me." The blonde pouted playful.

"Ruin my surprise? Nah." Callie smiled softly. Still stroking the hand, she asked, "How are you today? And why are you coming home so early? It's barely 4."

"I had a rough day." Arizona sighed out.

"Surgery didn't go well?"

"No, I had two in the morning and they all went well. Just another patient made me worry." Arizona twisted the corner of her lips and lowered her gaze to the linked hand. Callie leaned closer and then wrapped an arm around the blonde, pulled the woman to her side and brought the other hand around her in a tight embrace.

Arizona breathed in the familiar scents deeply, started to relax, then shared the story of little Maddy's.

"Some people are just too stupid and stubborn." Callie kissed the top of the blonde head. "She didn't know she's hurting the little girl. But there is nothing more for you to do."

"I know. It just… child abuse pisses me off. No child should grow up worry being abused, regardless if it's physically, or mentally. I passed the information to the social service. They said they'll follow up with the case." Arizona closed her eyes and buried her head deeper in Callie's neck. She was glad that Callie was here with her now.

"Hey," the brunette spoke up after a long moment of silence. Arizona lifted her head slightly to look her in the eyes. "I know I'm 5 hours of plane ride away. But if anything happened, you need a shoulder or a hug, you give me a call and I'll be here as fast as possible. Ok?"

"Even booty calls?" Arizona finished the question with laughter, made Callie giggled along.

"Yeah. That could be arranged." Callie leaned forward to peck on the pink lips, and then stood up to walk to the kitchen. "You didn't even have an egg in here. Please don't tell me you live on cafeteria foods since I was gone."

"I was busy." Arizona sang. She followed the brunette to the kitchen and sat on the barstool, watching the woman took out the groceries and put them in places. "How long are you going to stay?"

"I promised dad I'll be back on Monday, he has a doctor appointment in the afternoon." Callie answered while stocking the fridge, she had her back to her girlfriend so she totally missed the pout on the pale face.

"How is he?" Still wearing her adorable pout, Arizona propped her head up with the elbow against the kitchen counter.

"You know him, starting to read more documents from work every day. But I think it's starting to stress him out, he complained about being lightheaded yesterday." Finally finished with the groceries, Callie pulled a bottle of white wine from the fridge and took out 2 wine glasses from the cabinet for her and Arizona.

"Oh. His doctor checked him out?"

"Yes. High blood pressure, he said." Callie sighed while filling the glasses. "You didn't even have wine in here. I had to pick up some bottles from the pub. You promised me you'll take care of yourself…"

The brunette was rambling, Arizona nodded slowly but her mind was elsewhere. Carlos just had a heart surgery, high blood pressure was not a good sign. That may led to Callie wanted to stay in Miami longer… or even permanently. Would she?

Deep in her thought, the blonde didn't realize her girlfriend walked around the kitchen counter, standing in front of her with 2 glasses of wine in hand, staring at her with concern.

"You have your I-need-to-save-the-world look on your face. What are you thinking?"

"I- nothing, was just thinking about a patient that I will have to work with Derek tomorrow." Arizona shrugged and then took the offered glass from the tanned hand.

"Oh, this is what it's gonna be? Me complaining you don't take care of yourself, and you shutting your ears off?" Callie raised an eyebrow mischievously. The blonde rolled her eyes before followed to the living room.

"I wish you had told me you were coming back today." Arizona said before sitting down on the couch. "Then I could have had a Friday off, so that we can spend the whole 3 days together without interruption. I have a big surgery tomorrow."

"No, that's fine. I have things to do tomorrow." Callie wrapped an arm around the blonde and took a long gulp of the wine. It felt so good to have Arizona sitting next to her again, especially when a soft hand running up and down her thigh gently.

"What things? I thought you came back just for me?" Arizona asked innocently, earned herself a kiss on the forehead.

"I'm thinking about telling you over dinner. After feeding you with my home cooked meal." The brunette rested her cheek on the top of the blonde head, trying to hide the smirk. She knew the curiosity most certainly killed her girlfriend. "We need to talk."

As predicted, Arizona pulled away lightly, tilted her head to meet with the brunette. At first, Callie tried her best to look as serious as she could, but her solemn posture soon had broken down when she met with red rims around the blue eyes.

"Hey, what's wrong?" She asked softly, took the fair face in her hand when Arizona turned her face away. "Why are you crying?"

"Just tell me already, Callie." Arizona dropped her shoulders in defeat. If it was going to be bad news, she wanted to know it sooner than later. "Are you going to tell me you are not coming back?"

"What?" Callie frowned.

"You cancelled last week. And then you are here all in a sudden… You said we need to talk. Talk is never good. And your father is not feeling well. His blood pressure…" Arizona was about to stand up on her feet. If Callie was going to break up with her or telling her that she was going to relocate in Miami, she couldn't just sit there so close together. But two strong hands on her hips to stop her from fully stood up.

"Arizona, I was teasing you." The brunette said with panic in her voice, she really didn't know what made her girlfriend so upset. Now she felt so, so bad. "I just have something to ask you. I am sorry. I am sorry. Please don't cry."

"I'm not crying." Arizona whispered with choking voice. "I just… I can't…"

"Arizona, I talked to Joe the other night. He told me that he was looking for another place to live. He was informed by the landlord that the building will have to renovate almost completely because of the fire violation. The problem is the landlord doesn't have the capital to do it yet. Long story short, Joe and Walter are going to move out of there. I offered them my place. I mean, Joe needs a place, where would be better than the loft above the pub? Right?" Looking at the blonde intensely, Callie blurted out in one breath. She was going to drag it out during dinner, or other more romantic occasions. But now all she could think of was to lay it out in front of Arizona, no more beating about the bush.

"So, you are telling me," Arizona squinted at the concern brown eyes for few second, not believed she heard it right. She licked her lips and continued, "you're saying, you are going to live with Joe and Walter, after Cristina moved back with Owen? You really can't live alone, can you?"

"No, and yes." Callie smiled sweetly to the blonde. "No, I'm not going to live with Joe and Walter. I will go back there to pack up my stuff tomorrow so Joe can move in next week. No, I can't live alone. Well, I can, but I don't want to. That's why I wanna ask you, can I move in here with you after I return from Miami, please?"

"You want to move in with me? Officially?" Arizona's jaw almost dropped to the floor. She didn't expect this.

"I was going to ask you in a more romantic way, but your tears freaked me out. What's going on?" Seeing a smile slowly appeared on the face before her, Callie let out a relieved sigh and picked up a fair hand with both of hers.

"You made living arrangements for when you return? You're actually thinking to come back to Seattle?" Full force dimpled smile in display, Arizona knew the answer, but she just had to ask again to make sure she wasn't having auditory hallucinations.

"Arizona, that wasn't a question. I told you, I made a promise to you. Please tell me what's going on?" Callie still had no idea what was going on in the pretty blondes head, but at least she knew she made it all better now because beaming blue eyes lighted up the room.

"I don't know. I was just afraid you changed your mind and decided…" Arizona didn't need a mirror to know her face redden with embarrassment, she turned her face slightly tried to avoid the look of amused from her girlfriend, but a hand on her cheek stopped her. The next second, her lips were connected with the soft full lips.

"You are… crazy." Callie breathed out between kissed, "and cute."

"I know." Arizona leaned forward eagerly to continue the kiss, but the brunette pulled back further away and held an arm distance between them.

"Hey, you still haven't answered my question." Callie smiled cockily. "But if you don't want to share your apartment with me, I'll go look for another place then."

"YES! YES! YES! Calliope, YES!" Arizona jumped forward, threw her arms around Callie's neck, and pressed her front to the brunette as she exclaimed. "I would love to share my apartment with you. I wanna live with you!"

10 minutes later, the two started their celebration behind THEIR closed bedroom door.
