Chapter 40
"No, you still have to pay in the pub." Callie casted a side glance at her intern friend, who was wandering around the halls of the hospital along with to her.
"Why not? We're friends. What's the harm of a few drinks on the house?" Jo whined, still trying to get away from settling her tab in The Horizon.
"Everyone that works here is my friend, If everyone asked for drinks on the house, eventually there will be no house, my dear." The brunette rolled her eyes playfully, and Jo twisted her lips to a grimace.
"So, no one gets a free pass in the pub? Not even Robbins?"
"She's my girlfriend. She gets anything she wants from me." Callie smirked, a bright dimpled smile flashed in her mind. "And she offers me sex. Unless you want to sex me up for a few drinks in exchange. But I don't think my girlfriend will be happy with that."
"Eww..." The skinny intern back slapped Callie's shoulder with a wry face, making the taller woman giggle.
The two continued their banter and had reached to the fifth floor. It was a quiet night in the pit, and the intern duo decided to roam around the hospital trolling for surgery. It was definitely better than sitting in the ER hearing the patient who had a nickname 'frequent flyer' moaning for his fictional pain.
"No, I'm not lying. When I was there, I tended to let the bill slip once or twice, but they always insisted on buying their own drinks. Well, except Sloan." Callie shrugged. "And Yang always paid the full price even I gave her a discount. Well, Hunt was the one that picked up the bills."
"They have money. Dr. Hunt is an attending of course he can afford it. Don't forget I'm an intern and the money I make can barely pay my rent." Jo pouted. "I guess I should find a boyfriend who has a house…"
Their conversation stopped midway when the door of the on-call room few feet ahead of them crack opened, and then a slightly flushed looking Alex Karev came out of it. Of course it wasn't unusual for someone to come out of an on-call room, it was set up for them to rest in there anyway. But a surgical resident who was dedicated to peds choosing the fifth floor psych ward on-call room was a little odd.
Alex was stunned when he saw the two interns standing there staring at him. He righted his scrub top unwittingly, smiled at the girlfriend of his boss and his intern tightly as he passed by the two women.
Callie and Jo turned around watching the resident stride away from them. They shared a wicked smile and continued their path. No more than 4 steps after they passed the door, they heard it open again. Curiosity got the best of them. They peeked over their shoulders, and their jaws dropped on the floor immediately.
"Leah?" Jo exclaimed, startling the woman who was trying to tie her messy sex hair into a ponytail while walking out of the room. It made her drop the rubber band on the floor, causing it to roll away and stop next to the feet of the two dumbfounded interns. Callie picked it up and handed to Leah.
"What are you doing here?" Callie asked.
"Ha!" Jo snorted, gave Callie a sideway look. "Isn't it obvious? The real question is why are you still doing it with Karev? The guy is a douche bag."
"No, he is not." Leah snatched the rubber band from Callie's hand and went on to tie her hair. "Just so you know, Alex is a sweet guy."
"Umm… he could be sweet, but you just need to be careful, ok? He can be a real jerk sometimes." Callie said to her colleague. She meant well but the words didn't sound pleasant to Leah.
"If I need your advice, I'll ask." Leah rolled her eyes, then walked to the direction of the elevator.
Jo and Callie shared a look and then followed the other intern leaving the psych floor.
After Callie told her intern friends about her relationship with the head of peds, they didn't have much time to talk about it; And frankly, none of them really cared about it because the couple kept a respectful and professional distance between each other during work. And even though the Latina was personal friends with most of the attendings in the hospital, there had been no signs of special treatment toward her. So, why bother spending extra energy to hate someone that was actually good at their job?
Well, everyone except Leah Murphy. She still had a grudge against Callie. Although she believed that she had found love from Dr. Karev in an expected place and time, she was still jealous of Callie, and resented the brunette for letting her go on and on about how much she liked the pretty blonde doctor.
"Leah, I'm just saying, Alex isn't the kind of guy looking for serious relationship, you might get yourself hurt if you fall too hard." Callie tried again, standing next to the dirty blonde haired woman while they were waiting for the elevator.
"I knew his past. Just like Dr. Robbins, he slept around in the hospital." Leah pressed the call button again with annoyance before turning to glare at the brunette. "He changed for me, ok? You think your precious Robbins is the only one who's capable of change? That can stop sleeping around with nurses?"
Callie was taken aback with the comment. Her face fell and about to fire back after a deep breath, but Jo stopped her.
"Come on Callie, it's not worth it. Let's take the stairs." Jo grabbed Callie's wrist gently and pulled her toward the stairway. Their pagers chose this time to go off.
"911 from the ER. I think we really should run the stairs." Callie said after checking the device. Then the three of them ran as fast as they could down the 5 floors.
They arrived in the ER, just in time to meet the incoming gurneys, and orders were being called out.
"Female, 33. Gun shot wound to the chest, no pulse at the scene."
"Male, 35. Gun shot wound to the thigh, BP 90 over 60, pulse 110."
"Female, 7. Compound fracture on the left focile, stabilized on the scene."
"Ok. Murphy and Wilson, you are with Hunt. Torres, follow me. I'll take the 7 year old. Trauma room 2. And call peds." Webber ordered, and instructed the paramedics to roll the patient into the rooms before he went to announce the time of death of the woman already dead on the scene.
"Honey, stop fighting, ok? We will make the pain go away but you need to calm down, ok?" Callie and two nurses were trying to stabilize the little girl, but the poor thing was crying and kicking on the table, as tears rolled down her cheeks.
"I want my mommy. I want my mommy."
"I know honey, I know." Callie leaned closer to the girl. She placed a hand on the light brown hair offering some sort of comfort to the whining girl, while one of the nurses stuck a needle into the weedy arm.
"How is it, Torres?" Webber voice came through the door even before entering the room. A nurse helped him change into another pair of gloves.
"We gave her 50cc of morphine for the pain. Her forearm is broken. I think she needs surgery to fix that, and the tightness in her abdomen may indicate internal bleeding." Callie answered the chief as her hands were examining the limp body. Webber walked closer to the table to check on the sedated patient, and his eyes went wide when he found out who was on the table.
"Page Robbins!"
"Uh… Dr. Robbins isn't on-call tonight, she left already." The intern looked at her chief with a frown, and she glanced to the door found that the help had arrived. "Karev is here."
"No, you need to call Robbins in." The chief stated firmly. His head swerved around and ordered before moving to leave the room. "Take her for a CT. And book an OR."
Callie exchanged a confused look with Karev. The resident shifted to check on the patient, he gasped and nodded to the intern.
"Dude, you need to call Robbins, stat!"
Arizona and Mark entered The Horizon side by side. Her face spread to a toothy smile when she saw the beloved bartender was back to work tonight.
"Hola, Joe. Welcome back." The two doctors sat down by the bar right in front of the bartender. "How was Hawaii?"
"Hi Arizona. Hey Mark." Joe greeted his friends with a grin. "Hawaii was great. Walter had a blast. For me? 10 days of doing nothing but sitting by the pool almost made me crazy."
"Oh, boo hoo!" Mark cried out sarcastically. "Do you know how I wish my boss would force me to have a 2 week holiday?"
"Well, I love my job. I almost asked the pub in the hotel to let me cover them for a few hours." Joe smirked, and made his friends laugh with him.
Before Joe turned to prepare the drinks for Arizona and Mark, the other bartender already placed a Manhattan in front of the blonde.
"Thank you Linus." Arizona smiled to the short and slender bartender, who smiled back at her and then put another drink in front of Mark.
"Thank you Linus." Mark winked to the man before he shifted to another side of the bar. He picked up the Scotch for a sip, and he found Joe glaring at his co-bartender mumbling under his breath. "What's up?"
"Callie put that guy here to babysit me." Joe tilted his head toward Linus, who was busy mixing another drink for a customer. "He runs to do everything like he's a superhero. Hogging most of the orders to make sure I don't become 'overworked'."
"Come on, you just came back from a vacation, relax and take it easy." Arizona chipped in before tasting her drink. "And how are you and Walter? You guys ok?"
"To be honest, the high blood pressure fainting thing? Seemed like a gift to us. We finally opened up to each other, and Walter realized that there are a lot of things are out of our control. All we can do is to brace ourselves and wait to see what life throws at us." Joe said with a smile, and a wicked thought flashed in his head. "Callie told me about your fight."
"Oh." Arizona put the glass down and fumbled with it embarrassingly. A snicker came out from the man sitting next to her.
"Yeah. I'm sorry about that." The big bartender sighed heavily. "I didn't know Callie would think about that, you know. I didn't mean to put that in her head when I told her."
"No, it's ok. You know Callie." Arizona looked up to meet with Joe's smile, and she waved her hand. "We're ok. We opened up to each other too."
"Good good good…" Joe nodded slowly. He glanced at Mark with a ghost of a smile and gave him a quick wink before he continued talking. "And frankly speaking, Callie is not the ideal surrogate mother of my child. Don't get me wrong, she is beautiful but with that temper? I don't think I can handle a rebellious Latina teenager with her character."
With that mental image in head, Arizona chuckled along. Mark squinted between the woman and the bartender, but slowly, a smile pulled on his lips when Joe went on.
"I actually have someone else in mind, I just haven't have the chance to ask her yet." Joe picked up a rag to wipe a beer glass, trying to act as casual as he could.
"Oh? I thought you weren't thinking about getting a surrogate mother." The blonde reached for her drink to have another gulp.
"Well, never say never, right?" Joe put down the glass and leaned forward, resting his elbow against the bar top and came closer to Arizona. "I hope you won't mind if I ask, Arizona. I just couldn't shake off the idea of having a blonde hair baby, with blue eyes, and hopefully a pair of dimples, preferable a perky personality…"
The bartender couldn't finish his word, the drink spewed out from Arizona's pink lips and showered all over the big guy's face.
Everyone turned their attention to the bar after a strange squeak came out of Joe, and a roar of laughter from Mark. But all they could see was the bartender rubbing his face with a rag, joining the laughter with Mark, and the blonde haired doctor cover her face with both hands trying to cover her bright red face and the fact that her drink dripped down from her nostrils.
The death glare from the blue eyes made the two men laugh even more uncontrollably. Fortunately, Linus came for the rescue.
"Thank you Linus." Arizona mumbled through her hand when the other reached out to take the offered towel from the nice man. She punched Mark's shoulder as hard as she could after she cleaned up, and then threw the towel toward the other devil behind the bar. "That is really mean!"
"You need to see your face." Mark said between a snicker, then he turned to Joe. "We should take a picture and show to Callie."
"Don't you dare!" Arizona picked up Mark's drink pretending to throw it at the man, who ducked instinctively, making him lose balance and slip off the stool, landing on his butt with a loud bang.
Everyone in the pub, including Mark, laughed out after 2 seconds of silence.
Arizona stood up to pull her friend up from the floor with a wide grin, as she leaned back against her chair, she felt something in her purse vibrate.
"It must be Callie." She glanced at Joe with a lopsided smile while pulling her phone out of her purse. "She would be thrilled to know you made fun of me."
To her surprise, the screen of her phone was blank. She checked the other things in her purse, it was her pager that went off.
"Huh, I got paged." She pulled her lips to a pout, checking the message.
"Something's wrong?" Mark leaned over to peep on the pager, putting a hand behind himself to massage his bottom to ease the pain from the fall.
"I don't know. They paged me 911, but I am not even on-call tonight." The blonde picked up her mobile to call back the hospital. It was connected after a ring. "Oh hi, I'm Dr. Robbins, I got paged?"
"Wait a second… Yes, Dr. Robbins, we need you in the ER." The nurse on the other side answered.
"But I am not on-call tonight. Can't other surgeon take it over? Is Dr. Karev available?"
"Dr. Karev has a surgery scheduled in a few minutes." The nurse muttered behind the phone for a few second, and then she said, "Dr. Robbins, the chief wants you to come back now."
"Ok, I'll be there in 3 minutes." Arizona frowned slightly, and she quickly shoved everything back to her purse and stood up from the stool. But before she left, she turned to point a finger at the bartender. "Joe, this is not over. I'll get back to you."
Arriving in the hospital, Arizona didn't even bother changing into scrubs, it probably was just a consult anyway. But when she found a half dozen of police officers in the ER, she knew something serious had happened. Walking up to the chief who was talking to one of the officers, she noticed the deep furrow between the older man's brows.
"Chief?" She gave an apologetic to the police officer for interrupting the conversation he was having with the chief of surgery. "You paged me?"
"Yes, Dr. Robbins." Webber nodded to Arizona, and turned the attention back to the police before he left. "We'll send you the bullet after the surgery."
"Bullet? What happened?" Arizona asked after the officer retreated to his group. Webber released a deep breath and then led the peds surgeon toward the elevator.
"I'm about to operate on Maddy Carlson."
"Maddy Carlson?" Blue eyes went wide. It took less than a second for Arizona to recall the little girl, who was there in the ER two times, both were under her care. And the last one was really nasty. "Her father hit her again?"
"Yes." The chief held the elevator opened waiting for Arizona to follow her. "According to the police, it seemed the father got drunk, attacked the mother, and then the little girl tried to help but got kicked in the stomach, broke her arm when she landed on the coffee table."
"My god!" Arizona exclaimed and shook her head. "So you want me to assist? But I just had a drink. I don't think I should operate with alcohol in my system…"
"No, I'll have Dr. Karev to assist. Dr. Chang will work on the arm in the meantime. I paged you because you were Maddy's doctor, she knows you, and she needs someone she trusts by her side right now." Webber sighed heavily, dark eyes under knitted brows met with confused blue eyes. "The police believe Mrs. Carlson took out a gun. When Mr. Carlson struggled to get the gun, he got shot in the leg, and he took the gun and shot his wife in the chest. She was dead before arriving at the hospital."
Alex and Callie were standing side by side in front of the sink scrubbing in silent. The resident was no stranger to this little girl, he was one of the doctors that operated on her from the last injury. And he was so pissed at the father who beat up the little girl, and the mother who did nothing to protect her daughter. Arizona kicked him off of the case last time didn't tame his anger. Maddy was back on the table again just making him more furious.
For Callie, she felt like she knew this girl because Arizona talked about this case a lot. She knew her pediatric surgeon girlfriend cared about all her patients, but Maddy Carlson held a special place in that big heart. She just didn't know how Arizona would take it when she found out Maddy was back again, and her mother was killed.
The two snapped their heads up when the door of the scrub room opened, and an expressionless Arizona stepped in. She had changed into scrubs and decided to join in the OR.
"Robbins, are you going to operate? You'll take the lead or assist?" Alex asked, he didn't know his boss was going to come in the OR. If she was going to assist that meant he had been replaced. But the blonde shook her head.
"No, I'm just going to sit with Maddy."
"Arizona, are you ok?" Callie held her hands up after rinsed the soap, watching her girlfriend walked pass them and went straight into the operating room. Arizona turned to give them a tight smile and then strode forward.
The nurses were walking around preparing for the surgery. Coming close to the table, Arizona found that Maddy was wide awake and her big brown eyes were staring up to the ceiling. The girl was under a sedation that kept her from being too active, but not strong enough to put her under yet. A hand stroke her head softly drawing her out from the haze, her focus landed on the smiley face that popped up on her side.
"Dr. Zona." Maddy called out weakly.
"Hey Maddy." Arizona tried to smile as best as she could, and her thumb stroke the chubby cheek gently. "We are going to fix you up real soon, ok?"
Maddy just blinked. She was scared and fortunately, the sedation kept her calm. Seeing the familiar face of her favorite Dr. Zona relaxed her a little more, but Dr. Zona wasn't the one she needed the most.
"I want my mommy." Maddy whimpered, and her little face scrunched to a frown.
"Shh…" Arizona continued the strike on the cheek trying to sooth the little girl. Her heart ached for Maddy and she knew she shouldn't break the news that mummy was not able to come to her anymore. Not now. Looking up and found the surgeons were entering the room, she gave Maddy another forced smile. "Close your eyes, ok? You'll feel better after you wake up."
After a nod to the anesthetist, they put a mask over the girl's face to put her under. And Arizona sat down by the head of the bed, watching her colleagues cut open Maddy, trying to fix the broken body.
But it's gonna take much more work to fix the little broken heart, knowing that she sighed sadly to herself.
