Chapter 52

Rays of sunlight shone through the crack in the curtains, birds chirping merrily outside the window echoing the soft moans ringing in the bedroom.

Golden locks fanned out on the pillow, head thrown back as she was trying hard to catch her breath. Involuntary gasps slipped through the parted lips when the pleasure between her thighs ramped up a notch. The ministrations that were given by the woman on top on her wasn't unfamiliar, but when the ruby engagement ring wearing hand turned and let the little cold jewel wonder around her hot flesh, she couldn't help but arch her back higher.

"Oh, Calliope..." A Fair hand fumbled to find the strong hand on her chest, and entwined their fingers together. The matching sapphire ring shone next to the ruby one. "Up here... I want you up here... Calliope..."

Callie smiled into the wet heat, and buried her tongue deep one last time before kissing her way up the wriggling body. All the while, her sparkling brown eyes never left their joint hands. Throwing it above their heads, Callie leaned down to capture the sweet lips at the same time, her free hand took over the place where her tongue was a moment ago, filling her fiancee exquisitely.

They both moaned into each other's mouth. Arizona had to peel her lips away to let out a whimper when the talented fingers started stroking the sweet spot within her. With a flick on her bundle of nerves, she felt warmth quickly spread through her limbs and the spasms pulled in her lower belly. She wanted to open her eyes to look into the love of her life but the power of the orgasm was so great that all she could do was clench shut her eyes and grab the hand tighter, soft moans of her lover's name flew out her lips liked a prayer to the gods from above.

Gentle kisses showered over flushed cheeks bringing the blonde back down from the height. Opening the blue eyes slowly, Arizona met with the stunning face hovered above hers.

"I thought we weren't doing that until I'm totally recovered from the flu." Arizona brought her left hand to caress the face of the smiling woman. "Those were your words."

Callie turned her face to plant a kiss on the open palm, gazing into the brilliant blue eyes and she whispered softly.

"I woke up with a hot body squirming against me, and you were moaning in your sleep." The brunette chuckled at the bashful smile. "Being a loving fiancee, I think I am obligated to help you out."

Arizona buried her face into Callie's neck to hide her blush, making the brunette laugh harder before leaning forward to kiss the exposed shoulder. She rested her head on the soft chest, listening to the steady heartbeat with a smile.

"So, are you going to tell me about the dream? I hope I was in it, you know." Callie teased.

"We were in LA." Arizona toyed with the raven hair with her fingers. "Remember the time we were in LA visiting Addison? That was the best vacation I've ever had."

"Yeah? Maybe we can have our wedding there. I'd love to have a beach wedding." The brunette pushed herself up by the elbow, looking down at her fiancee with twinkle in her eyes. The few days they spent in LA were memorable and she really wouldn't mind having the most important day of her life there by the beautiful beach.

"Really? I thought you prefer to have it in Miami, near your parents?" Arizona raised her hand to tuck a strand of black hair behind the caramel color ear, and the hand lingered on the plump cheek.

"That'd work too." Callie rolled her eyes dramatically. "I'm sure my dad will go all in, offering us one of his most luxury hotels, turns it into one of those royal weddings that makes it on the front page of the local news. Oh and my mom would probably bring a guy or two to the rehearsal dinner, trying to save me from being corrupted by you before it's too late."

"Me corrupt you?" It brought out a fit of laughter from the pink lips. "Who's the one woke me up by taking off my panties?"

"Hey hey, you seduced me with your sexy moans, what else am I suppose to do?" Callie complained, but the gleam in her eyes told otherwise.

"Turn around and go back to sleep?" Arizona said innocently, that earned herself a gentle kiss on the lips.

"You know I can't." Callie breathed out against the soft lips before pulled away. "But seriously, do you wanna have a beach wedding in LA?"

"Wherever you want, Calliope. I'll go wherever you want to go." The blonde looped her arms around Callie's neck to pull her back down. She was about to flip them but her cellphone had chosen this time to make an appearance. She sighed and reached out to pick it up from the nightstand, and sighed heavier when she found out it was a reminder coming from the chief's assistant.

"What was that?" Callie rolled over, staring at the pouting blonde with concern.

"The chief. He wants to make sure I remember there's a meeting with the committee of the Carter Madison Foundation this morning." Arizona glanced at her fiancee before putting the phone back on the nightstand with force. "You know how I hate standing in front of authority. Is there anything we can do to make the chief extend our suspension? Make it a week so we can go to LA and visit Addison and Henry."

"We can always quit our jobs. I can go back to bartending and you can wait tables." Callie said with a lopsided smile. "Do you know what this meeting is for?"

"I don't know. I submitted a proposal years ago about improving the medical cares in Africa, but never got any response from them." Arizona shrugged. Looking over to the alarm clock, she realized that they were about to go to work. Smiled naughty to the woman lying next to her, she got out of the bed and walked toward the bedroom. "Come on, let's take a shower. I want to reenact the scene in my dream."

It only took a second for Callie to jump up and followed into the bathroom.

"There she is!" Thunderous applause surround the couple as soon as they stepped foot into the hospital. Arizona jumped a little and bumped into the tall brunette who was walking behind her. "There's our Mike Tyson!"

The blonde doctor took a moment to compose herself. Looked around, there were Cristina, Meredith and Mark, leading a group of interns and nurses standing in the lobby clapping toward her with broad smile plastered on their faces.

"What is this all about?" Arizona stared at her co-workers with a pale face. Callie squeezed her shoulders and whispered loudly in her ear from behind.

"Yang called you Mike Tyson, I think it's about the punch."

"Yeah!" Cristina nodded matter-of-factly. "You KO the wicked witch with a single punch. Now she's running back to the west with the tail between her legs. You are our hero Dr. Tyson."

Another round of applause rang in the lobby.

"Don't call me that! I'm not a hero... or Mike Tyson."

"Oh you are, Dr. Tyson." Mark joined in with a grin. "You have no idea how grateful they are that you drove the wicked witch away."

"That's true, Dr. Robbins." Joy the cardio nurse spoke up for her fellow nurses. "Dr. Hahn was terrible. Half of the cardio nurses were talking about transferring to another specialty if she was gonna stay. We are glad that she was gone before we had to leave."

"And do you know what the best part is?" Cristina stepped closer to the stunned blonde, putting a hand on her shoulder saying with a triumphant smile. "The chief has decided not to hire another cardio attending to fill the gap because Teddy should be back in about a month. He's going to let McQueen take charge for a while. Do you know what that means? McQueen isn't qualified. He's gonna be swarmed with paper works and not able to handle the surgeries."

"So you will get to do most of the cardio cases..." Arizona trailed off, knowing exactly where the resident was going.

"I WILL get to do most of the cardio cases!" Cristina laughed out, patting the PEDS surgeon's shoulder before shifting her gaze to the intern behind. "Callie, you and me are going to have lot of cardio surgeries together. You're not as hardcore as me but I just can't stand Murphy, so yeah, you're my choice."

"Okay... thank you, Dr. Yang?" Callie cast a quick sidelong glance to her fiancee, who was shaking her head with a smirk.

"Oh don't thank me, thank Dr. Tyson." The Asian looked between the two women in front of her with sincerity. She wasn't joking when she said she was grateful that the PEDS attending punched the former acting chief of cardio away.

"Stop calling me Dr. Tyson!" Arizona squealed, making the crowd in the lobby roar with laughter.

"What are you all doing here?" A deep voice coming from behind the crowd, everyone turned around and found an unamused looking Chief of surgery standing there staring at them, with a stranger by his side.

"Chief, we're just welcoming Dr. Robbins back to work." Meredith answered for everyone, subtly waving her hand behind her back to dismiss the crowd. And she pulled her best friend out of the lobby before the chief could stop them. The chief scolded under his breath as his staffs quickly dispersed in different directions.

"Dr. Carter, this is Dr. Robbins, and Dr. Torres." Webber walked up to the remaining surgeons and introduced them to the visitor respectively. "And there is Dr. Sloan, Plastics."

"Dr... Carter?" The Plastic surgery asked while exchanging the handshake with the amiable and polite doctor. "As in... Carter the Carter Madison?"

"Yeah, John Carter. I'm here on behalf of the Carter Madison Foundation." John flashed them a suave smile. Apparently it wasn't the first time that someone linked his family name to the world known medical foundation. "I'm the third generation."

"Ok, Dr. Carter is here for the meeting with Dr. Robbins. Shall we?" Webber held up his hand gestured the visitor to the elevator. He didn't know why the new president of the Carter Madison foundation was coming here to meet with his head of PEDS surgery, but he was eager to find out.

Callie and Mark watched the trio walk toward the elevator. Mark didn't know anything about this meeting, the gossipy side of him couldn't help to ask.

"Why is that rich brat is here? And what is he doing with your girlfriend? What did she do?"

"I don't know, neither does she." Callie answered with a furrow. "And what make you think he's a brat? He looks nice."

"He's too good looking and too rich to be a doctor. I bet he earned his medical degree by flashing his family name around." The man walked with his friend to the stair, stopped when he found the amused smile on her friend. "I know, I know. I am good looking too. But I am the ruggedly handsome kind, not like that guy, all sissy and... rich."

The brunette just sneered and gave her best friend a pat on the shoulder. It was a typical reaction from a guy like Mark, feeling threatened when a better man showing up in his turf. The evil in her just wished Lexie would get a chance to meet Dr. Carter before he left.

"You were trained as a trauma surgeon, Dr. Carter?" Arizona and John were making small talk as they walking toward the conference room, with the chief behind them.

"Yes, I took my residency at Cook County General in Chicago." John smiled. "Dr. Webber showed me around earlier. I have to say, your ER is more efficient than there. I had to take care of at least 10 patients at a time."

"Well, we always say that ER is the most important part of a hospital." Webber jumped in. "Actually, every department in this hospital is important. Especially PEDS, you know, the children are our future. That's why we were grateful that we got the donation from a patient's parents to open the clinic. All because of Dr. Robbin's hard work."

Webber's compliment brought a blush into the PEDS surgeon's cheeks. John sensed the awkwardness and just nodded with a smile.

The three arrived in the conference room. The chief was about to sit down on the head of the table, but the young Carter stopped him with a cough.

"Dr. Webber, thanks a lot for the tour. If you don't mind, I would like to start the meeting with Dr. Robbins." John extended his hand in front of the Chief of surgery intended to give him a goodbye handshake, it couldn't be more clear that the men wasn't needed in the conference room.

Arizona bit her lips watching the interacting in silence. She couldn't help to take a deep breath after her boss left the room. John Carter didn't look much older than her, actually he still had that mien of a mischievous elf around his smile. However, he was there representing one of the greatest medical foundation, for the reason that she had absolutely no idea of, it wasn't abnormal that she felt a bit nervous.

"Dr. Robbins... can I call you Arizona?" John flashed a childish smile toward the PEDS surgeon, who returned with a heartfelt smile.

"Of course, John."

"You must be surprised about this meeting. I should've contacted you more properly, my apologies. But when I was looking over your old proposal, old friends of mine invited me over for their twin daughter's birthday party. I just took the chance to jump on the plane here without leaving more instruction to the staff before they set up the meeting." John scratched the back of his neck uneasily. "I'm still new to this administration thing. Gram will be furious if she knew about it."

"Gram?"

"My grandmother." The former trauma doctor chuckled. "She's retried, but believe me, she's still the president of the foundation behind the curtains."

John reached in his brief case, pulled out a folder and spread the papers on the table. He crossed his fingers on top on it and looked into the blonde doctor across the table.

"Arizona, first of all, I owe you an apology. Personally."

"What do you mean?" Arizona was bewildered with the confession. She had no idea what she did to deserve such a sincere apology from a total stranger.

"Years ago you presented the proposal to the foundation, and you were in the short list of getting the grant to work on your Africa project." The man flipped a stack of papers to the top of the pile, apparently it was Arizona's old proposal. "The committee was impressed by your visionary and rationalist, especially it was coming from a 5th year resident."

"Then why didn't I get the grant?"

"The thing is, I was working in Congo at the time." John bit his lips tight before continued. "I followed a fellow doctor there working in a rural clinic in the beginning, and later we started to set up an AIDS center to treat the HIV/AIDS patients. Our main concern was the children."

"I've read some articles about that AIDS center in Congo. They treated thousands of people around that area, and it was fully funded by a private foundation..."

"The Carter Madison Foundation." John nodded slowly. "Gram objected my decision of staying there. But eventually she changed her mind and used her power to subsidize a large amount of money to support the center. There has an unspoken rule in the foundation. They spread the money in different areas in order to motivate different kind of creativity in the medical world. Except the medical care services, brainy scientists are one of the big beneficiaries. Since a big portion has been funded to the AIDS center I was working on, they had to cut down the donation in the similar field. That was why they withdrew your grant."

Arizona took in the information quietly. She breathed out slowly after a while of silence between them.

"I understand, John. To be honest, my proposal was an ideal of tending people that don't have a chance to get a proper modern medical care. Even though I don't get the grant to accomplish it, you are doing the work and it has done beautifully. You don't have anything to apologize for."

A broad smile replaced the nervousness on the young Carter's face. He was relieved.

"And the reason I'm here - I am hoping you can take over the clinic."

"Excuse me?" Arizona asked with her jaw dropped. She didn't see that coming.

"I know it's really irresponsible to dump this on you like this. I wish I could continue my work in there but the obligation of being the only living third generation of Carter left me with no choice but to come back here." John sighed. He rested his elbows on the table and leaned forward. "I need someone who shares the same passionate of helping people over there to take over the clinic. When I talked to Gram about this, she told me about you. She remembered your proposal very well."

"Thank you, John, and your Gram." The blonde swallowed hard. "But I'm a surgeon, a pediatric surgeon. AIDS isn't my specialty."

"We are closing down the HIV/AIDS center in Congo for several reasons, mainly because of the unstable situation in there. The marauding militias and the army made our works getting more and more difficult." The former trauma doctor let out a tremble breath. "Off the record, I was kidnapped in Congo, once."

Arizona gasped, staring at the man in front of her with eyes as big as a saucer.

"I don't mean to scare you, but I know I need to be honest with you if I want you to take this job." John smiled apologetically. "It happened years ago and the security had improved after that. The threat was still there but at least that didn't happen to anyone else again."

"Then why do you have to shut it down?"

"As I said, the unstable situation. The civil war is obstructing our work. Less than half of relief materials could actually be delivered to our facility. And to prevent the people in need coming in to the danger zone. We are going to relocate the center to Malawi, the safer country in Africa. Even though AIDS is still one of the biggest issues in there, we decided to extend our service. Surgical care, especially pediatric surgical care will be our main concern from now on." John took a sip of water before fixating his gaze on the pediatric surgery. "Arizona, you are the prefect choice to run the new clinic in Malawi."

"Ok Dr. Torres, suction." Mark said to the intern next to him. His blue eyes twinkled when he looked into the wound. "I rocked this mandibular repair. Can you tell this guy's jaw was broken in five places?"

Callie leaned over to observe. She had to admit that Dr. Sloan truly did an amazing job to repair the jaw.

"See? Plastic can be badass too. Does it turn you on?" The plastic surgeon turned to look at his friend, no need to remove the mask to know he was smirking underneath. "Come to Plastics and you'll find more interesting cases like this."

"Do I have to remind you that your next surgery is sucking ass fat?" Callie rolled her eyes and feigned annoyance, making the rest of the people in the room snicker.

"Oh, that hurts." Mark laughed out. He was about to banter back but was disturbed by one of the beeping cellphone on the tray in the corner.

"Dr. Torres, you have a message from Dr. Robbins." Nurse Melanie looked over the tray.

"Melanie, could you please read Dr. Torres's message aloud?" Mark answered for the intern before she could react. Callie looked at him in amazement. "What? She probably wanna fill you in about the meeting. Aren't you a bit curious about that? Melanie?"

"Dr. Robbins said she just finished the meeting."

"Thanks Melanie." Callie said to the nurse politely. But the man didn't stop.

"Melanie, can you reply for Dr. Torres, asking Dr. Robbins what was the meeting about?"

"Melanie, don't!" Callie cut in instantly. Of course she desperately wanted to know the details, but she was not going to share it with the nosey nurses and Mark like this.

But Mark the excellent gossip wouldn't let it go easily.

"Dr. Torres would be agitated if she doesn't know anything about this meeting that Dr. Robbins was having with that doctor from the Carter Madison Foundation, and that may be in danger of my patient on this table." Mark said between cutting into the patient. "So Melanie, as the lead surgeon in this operating room, I need you to text Dr. Robbins for Dr. Torres."

"Dr. Sloan!" Callie complained, but the fingers of the nurse were already flying on the cellphone.

"We just care about you, Dr. Torres." Mark winked with mischievous in his voice.

The cellphone beeped again within a minute. All eyes in the room turned to Melanie waiting for her to read the message.

"Dr. Robbins said they want her to run a clinic in Ma... Malawi."

"Malawi? Where is it?" Callie asked, and one of the nurses gave her an answer.

"It's in Africa."

"Africa? Whoa!" Mark exclaimed, stopped his hand to stare at the stunned brunette standing next to him. "Africa. Did you know that?"

"I told you, I... even Arizona didn't know anything about this meeting. How would it be possible that I'd know..." The flutter of the mask showed that the intern was breathing hard.

"Do you think she'd go?" The surgeon asked casually, turned his attention back to the patient in front of him. "Suction, Dr. Torres."

Callie didn't answer the question but focusing on her task. She couldn't answer because she was still trying to grasp the idea of Arizona going to another continent to run a clinic.

"I've heard that she sent a paper to Carter Madison years ago, but it was even before I came here. I don't know much about that." Mark talked quietly as his hands busy suturing the patient. "I think it was about improving pediatric care in developing counties."

"You're telling me this is her dream? To go to Africa?" Callie's hand stopped half way from placing the instrument on the tray, a nurse took it from her hand.

"Probably." Mark shrugged his shoulder even so lightly, concentrating to close the wound as smooth as possible. But the intern wasn't helping.

"But... we just get engaged. What does that mean? She's gonna move to Malawi? Just like that?"

"Hey, calm down." The lead surgeon gave her a hard stare before glanced around at the room. "You're way over your head."

"Am I? You just told me going to Africa is her dream. The dream she had for a long time." Round brown eyes above the mask looked deep into her best friend. "Oh god, she's gonna call it off. She's gonna break up with me."

"Can you please calm down?" Mark tried again. He quickly finished the work and instructed the nurse the follow ups, then dragged his friend out of the operating room to scrub out.

As soon as the two entered the scrub room, the attending stood tall facing the intern. He put a hand on his hip with a strained face that Callie had never seen from the usually playsome man.

"Dr. Torres, I know you were upset about the whole Africa thing, but you can not lose it in the OR. You can NEVER lose it in the OR because there is a patient lying on the table who deserves your professional attention. His life is depended on you and even just a slightly panicking would have killed him. We can talk and we can make jokes in the OR but our focus should never leave the patient. And we need to be calm and steady." Mark said the last few words through his gritted teeth. "Are we clear?"

"Yes, Dr. Sloan." Callie nodded her head firmly. Mark was right. She shouldn't let her personal problem interfered her job, especially when she was in an OR dealing with a life and death situation. It was her job to prioritize the patient. She shouldn't focus on anything or anyone other than the patient.

"Good." Mark pursed his lips and relaxed his face. Now he returned to the role of Callie's best friend instead of her boss. He handed over a bar of soap and spoke softly. "Talk to her."

"What am I gonna say? She wants to go to Africa, should I just let her go? I love her, Mark. Should I just let her go following her dream?" Callie scrubbed forcefully, projecting her anger and uncertainly on her own arms.

"Callie, don't make the same mistake again. Talk to her. Tell her what you think and ask her what she wants. That guy just made the offer like a minute ago. We all know how she needs her sweet time to process things. I'm sure she hasn't made up her mind yet." The man nodded his head affirmatively. "She loves you too. She wouldn't make a decision without you."

Callie found the knot in her gut was getting bigger by the minute. Unable to hold it anymore, she left the attending to take care of the post-op follow up and rushed toward the PEDS floor hoping to get a chance to her fiancee. A little help from the nurse on the desk, she found the blonde in the attending lounge.

Callie hadn't entered the attending lounge since she became an intern in the hospital. There had an unspoken rule that interns don't go to the attending lounge and Callie did her best to respect this rule, but not this time. Sneaking in quickly, she was greeted with a silklike bare back clenching in only a light blue lace bra. She couldn't help to smirk when the several angry hickeys were in display, the evidence of their passionate session from the morning.

Dimpled smile spread in full force when Arizona swiveled from the sound of someone entered the room and found her fiancee was standing there staring at her. She took her time to put on her sweater and buttoned up her jeans.

"Dr. Torres, you were the one saying you're not gonna come to the attending lounge. What are you doing in here?" The blonde looked over her shoulder teasing the intern with her most solemn Dr. Robbins voice.

"I..." Callie swallowed hard, a lump in her throat made her speechless. The blonde didn't pay much of attention in that but kept putting her things in the purse hurriedly. Callie took a deep breath and asked, "Arizona, when do you have to go?"

Throwing the newest issue of medical journal in the bag, Arizona turned around with a small smile.

"Now."
