Chapter 58

Callie woke up with a start. What was that? Someone's crying?

She brushed her hand to the side blindly reaching for the woman should be sleeping next to her, but all she got was cold sheets. Lifting her head slightly, brushing the messy bed hair out of her face trying to look for herself. Yes, she was alone in bed, Arizona was nowhere in sight.

And the crying was getting clearer. It sounded like someone was calling out for mommy...

Oh yeah, right!

The brunette jumped out of the bed and rushed to the room down the hall with a baby monitor in her hand.

She and Arizona had stayed at Addison's house for a few days already. Last night, more precisely sometime this morning, the house owner burst into their room waking them up, telling them that there was an emergency with one of her patients and that she had to run to the hospital. She dragged the blonde with her, leaving baby duty to the godmother of her son.

"Hey little man, auntie Callie's here." Callie opened the door to the nursery, her heart ached meeting tearful brown eyes staring back at her. Baby Henry had been woken up for a while already. Normally his mother would've come to him after he called out, but this morning mommy didn't come. So he started crying and crying... And he cried even harder when it wasn't the familiar face that came to rescue him from the crib this morning.

"Oh baby boy, please don't cry." The brunette reached over and picked up the boy. Despite it wasn't mommy, Henry wanted to be cuddled and he jumped into Callie's arms. "Mommy had to work, but auntie Callie is here, okay? Please stop crying, okay?"

Little Henry nodded with a pout, gigantic tears harboring in the big brown eyes. Callie kissed his temple whilst wiping off the tears with the pad of her thumb tenderly. Cooing at the whimpering toddler while walking around the room, she finally got the hiccups to stop and was able to change out the dirty diaper. They went downstairs to start their day.

"Okay, you sit here little guy." The godmother put the boy on his high chair by the dining table. After staying a couple days in the house, Callie kind of picked up the morning routine, at least she thought. Henry liked to have cheerios for breakfast, but what she didn't know was that she shouldn't pour too much milk into the bowl, and she should have kept an eye on the boy. Turned around less than a minute fixing herself a cup of coffee, Henry already had the milk soaking him from head to toe.

"Oh my god!" Callie quickly placed the cup on the table and strode toward the giggling boy in 2 steps before he splashed the milk on his face again. She blurt out whilst snatching the bowl away. "What are you doing?"

Little grinning face froze and tears filled in the big brown eyes in just a split second. Callie stood there dumbfounded until an earsplitting scream came out of the tiny human in front of her. Fumbling to pick up a wash cloth on the counter, Callie wiped the milk and tears on the now redden face but the damn tears just kept rolling down the chubby face. No matter how she coaxed, Henry just threw his head back with his eyes shut tight, mouth opened wide and wailing from the top of his lungs.

"Really, thanks for taking me with you, Addison." Arizona looked over to the side, giving the driver a genuine smile. "I've never seen a half delivery before."

"Well, an EXIT surgery is not that uncommon in fetal surgery." The redhead shrugged. "In this case, we needed the umbilical cord to keep the baby alive until we removed the tumor that's compressing its lungs."

"I have handled numerous of preemies myself, but operating on a baby that was still attached to its mother, it was..." The blonde frowned trying to find the word to describe the experience she just had. And Addison offered.

"Amazing, right?"

"It was." The two shared a smile.

"I have to say I was surprised to hear that you're interested in maternal-fetal medicine. I thought you'd pick neonatology for your second specialty." Addison chanced a glance to the assisting surgeon who just helped her operate on a patient in the middle of the night. It wasn't a simple delivery. A mass on the unborn baby's neck caused a build-up of fluid, obstructing the airway and the spine. The tumor needed to be removed before the baby was born and Addison was more than happy offering the blonde surgeon a first taste of fetal surgery. "You're great in pediatrics. Neonatology is more or less in the same category."

"I know, and I've thought about that. I'm actually interested in both specialties, and Nicole Herman decided to come to work in the hospital now, it's like an opportunity present itself." Arizona answered sincerely.

"Oh so you're saying if I was working in Seattle Grace, you'd come to study under me?" Addison arched an eyebrow as she pulled the car into the driveway to her house.

"Are you kidding me? The world class neonatal surgeon Dr. Addison Montgomery is willing to take me under her wings?" Arizona laughed. "Of course I'd take the chance in a heartbeat."

"Well that's easy, just come to LA." The redhead made a little deprecating shrug before getting out of the car.

"Stop trying to tempt me and Callie." Arizona shook her head with a little smile. "We might actually stay if you don't stop it."

"Doesn't sound like it's a bad idea. And don't tell me you prefer Seattle over LA." Addison gestured the sunny blue sky above them. "Seattle weather sucks."

"The weather is not always bad there, and you know it." The blonde followed to the door. "And admit it, you want us here so you can have us babysitting your son anytime you want."

"Guilty as charged." Addison threw a flirty smile over her shoulder before opening the front door. She sang as they stepped foot into the house. "We're home."

"Mommy!" A squeak coming from the living room followed by a little rocket darted toward the new arrivals. Addison bent to a squat to catch her son.

"Hey baby, I've missed you." The mother gave the boy a loud kiss on the cheek making him giggle. "Were you being a good boy to auntie Callie?"

Henry nodded in his mother's arms. But the weary woman they found in the living room said otherwise.

"What's the matter with you?" Addison asked the woman sitting lifelessly on the floor against the couch facing the TV set. Callie gave her a bitter smile after the blonde pulled her up on her feet.

"Your son is a monster." She threw the redhead a glare before leaning in to her fiancée for a comforting hug. But Arizona took a step back, looking at the brunette up and down with a frown.

"Seriously, what's happening? You smell... weird."

"I got milk in my hair." Callie touched her own hair self-consciously. "Henry got milk all over himself and started crying. I had to cuddle him to stop it then I got milk and tear and dribble and snivel... whatever came out of him all over me."

Addison looked between the brunette and the baby in her arms with amusement.

"Oh you find that funny, Addison?" Callie put her hands on her hips staring at her friend. "This little devil of yours! When you were here, he was an angel. But this morning with only the two of us? He was a devil! I had to give him a bath and he splashed around in the tub liked he was in the swimming pool. I was soaked through and through but I couldn't take a shower. Not even change my clothes because whenever I put him down, he ran away like a football player in the field."

At this point, Addison was not the only one laughing at the brunette's animated portrayal of her morning.

"We played balls, we played trucks... we played whatever freaking toys he has..." Callie threw her hands around the room, indicating the massive amount of toys spreading around everywhere in the living room. "And I asked if he wanted spaghetti with meat balls for lunch, he said no. I asked if he wanted mac and cheese he said no. I asked if he wanted a sandwich he said no..."

"Then what did you get him for lunch?" Addison asked with a mischievous smile. She knew her son very well.

"I made mac and cheese anyway!" Callie stepped closer to the mother and son, poking the boy in the nose playful. "And he managed to get the sauce in his hair again. We had to take another bath and again, made me feel like I had a bath with my clothes on."

Henry buried his head in the crook of his mother's neck with a shy smile. He wriggled his tiny body trying to escape from the adults when a song came out from the TV. He toddled to it as soon as Addison put him down.

"Oh, and we watched that goddam movie twice! Twice in a row, Addison! I seriously can't 'Let it go' anymore!" Callie dropped her head on Addison's shoulder with a long sigh, making the other two women gave a cackle of laughter together.

"Come on, you need a shower and a nap. You're exhausted." Arizona took the tan hand and led the tired woman upstairs. Addison called after them.

"I am going to put Henry down for a nap too. How about ordering pizza for dinner later?"

"Sounds good. See you in a couple hours." Arizona answered from the top of the stairs. When she entered the room she shared with her brunette, Callie had already shed off her clothes and jumped in the shower. Arizona sat on the toilet seat watching the brunette enjoying the warm shower after changed into shorts and tank top.

"You have no idea how horrible it was to take care of a 2 years old alone." Callie came out of the cubicle, gave the blonde a wry smile before drying her hair with the offered towel.

"I think I have a pretty good idea." Arizona came behind the taller woman, picked up a second towel wiping the firm back tenderly. "You did look miserable."

"He is just... full of energy. Really, I can't keep up with him." Callie dropped the towel on the counter, meeting with the smiling blue eyes in the mirror. "And whenever I said something that he didn't like, he just screamed or... or... he was like a water tap, you know? He could cry in a snap of a finger."

"We called those crocodile tears." The blonde wrapped her arms around Callie's waist from behind, resting her chin on the strong shoulder. "All kids do that. Spend more time in Peds, you'd know how to handle them the next time."

"Oh right, how was the surgery?" Callie turned around within Arizona's arms. The bright smile on the fair face went brighter.

"It was awesome. We operated on the baby with the umbilical cord still attached to the mother."

"Whoa!" Callie exclaimed. "And the baby survived?"

"Of course, Addison is a rock star." Arizona gave a light peck on the full lips before walked away. "Let's get some sleep. I was up at 3 this morning. I'm kinda exhausted too."

Callie came out of the bathroom after fixed her hair, found the blonde was already in bed waiting for her. But as soon as her back hit the mattress, Arizona jumped up from the bed to her hand bag.

"What are you doing?" Callie asked when the blonde came back with a picture in hand.

"Addison got a call from your mother this morning. She went to a checkup appointment with Ana yesterday and she sent the report to us." Arizona handed over the picture in her hand. "And she sent us the ultrasonic picture too."

"Is she okay? Is the baby okay?" Callie stared at the picture with a broad smile.

"Everything seems normal." Arizona leaned closer, looking at the same picture with her head against the brunette's. "Your mother really takes good care of her."

"Good... Hey, can you tell if it's a boy or a girl yet?" Callie turned the picture in different angles, squinting at it hard trying to figure it out. Arizona just shook her head and sank deeper in the bed.

"It's too soon to tell. It's just 12 weeks." The blonde stretched, getting comfortable and ready to take the nap. Callie placed the picture on the nightstand carefully before laying down, snuggled up against her fiancée.

"Remember that morning in Miami, we talked about our future kids?" Callie asked.

"Yeah." Arizona wrapped her arms around the brunette, waiting for the real question.

"I think I'm with you. I don't want boys. Boys are horrible."

"You are crazy." Addison laughed out, stroking the little blonde head nestling on her laps. "You're doctors. You know there's no guarantee. Even if you decide to adopt, you can't choose the gender, or race."

After hours of power nap, they all met up in the living room having their pizza dinner. The adults were having wine, and the TV was playing another Disney movie, that was why Henry could sit on his mother's laps so calmly, totally concentrated on the toys having their adventures.

"I know that. Just... your son terrified me." Callie pointed to the now quiet boy with her wine glass. Arizona pulled her closer and squeezed her shoulder with a chuckle.

"He was testing your limit. That's what children do. Boys and girls, they all do the same." Addison looked down at her son lovingly.

"You're a neonatal surgeon. When did you become an expert of child psychology?" The brunette mocked her friend with an eye rolling.

"I'm a mother of a 2 year old. I have plenty of practice. You just have to learn with your child, everyday." Addison smiled to her son when he patted her face telling her that his favorite part of the movie was playing. They all turned to look at the TV, watching Woody and Buzz Lightyear flying in the sky on the back of a remote control car. She continued after the part was over. "And I'm a single mom. I can do it, don't tell me the two of you together can't do it."

"Yeah, but not anytime soon. We've talked about this." Arizona shared a look with the woman sitting next to her. "We have a pretty busy year ahead of us. With my new fellowship and Callie's being a resident, we are going to wait for a couple of years."

"One thing at a time." Callie nodded. "First, we have a potentially giant wedding party waiting for us."

"So, the GT Regency LA?" The redhead asked with a hint of ecstatic in her voice.

"We don't have a choice. Arizona promised my dad." Callie threw her fiancée a sidelong glance, and Arizona bumped her shoulder instantly.

"Hey! We said we'd think about it. You're the one loving the place when we went there yesterday."

"I said I like it because you already promised my dad."

"Look at you two." Addison wriggled her eyebrows looking between the soon-to-be married couple with a smile. "The very first argument over the wedding planning."

"Oh, that reminds me." Arizona turned to look at her fiancée. "We have to tell Nicole that we've picked the location."

"Nicole?" Addison asked. "Herman?"

"No, not that Nicole. Arizona's friend. She's gonna be our wedding planner." Callie patted Arizona's knee before stood up. "I'll go get a bottle of water and your phone."

"Get me one too, thanks." Addison smiled to the brunette then turned to the blonde. "So, you got the place. You've got a wedding planner. Have you got a date yet?"

"Yeah, the first weekend of December. We have a couple of holidays around Thanksgiving, we are going to rearrange our schedules so that we'll have like 2 weeks for the party and our honeymoon." Arizona smiled back.

"5 months from now. Do you think you have time to do that?" The redhead arched an eyebrow. "You know, with the fellowship and everything."

"I think that's what a wedding planner is for, right? I mean, she's going to arrange everything." Arizona shrugged carelessly. "Callie and I just have to put on the dress and be there, isn't it?"

"Oh you think? Your wedding planner is going to do the follow up, but still there'd be tons of things that need the two of you to decide." Addison smirked. "Indoor or outdoor, salmon or chicken, lilies or peonies, the style of the invitation, the sitting plan... And yes, don't forget about the wedding dresses. Don't think it's easy to pick the one you like among the sea of white puffy dresses."

"Whoa slow down, Addison." The blonde opened her mouth wide staring at her friend. "Don't freak me out before anything started."

"Well, I'm not trying to freak you out or something. Just want to give you a heads up. I helped with my mother's wedding and I almost lost my sanity from making all those choices, for her! And that was just a tiny ceremony for like only 10 guests. You are talking about over 200 guests..." Addison stopped to give her son a kiss on the cheek when the boy picked up the anxiety from his auntie Arizona and getting fidgeting. "They're mostly from Callie's father. I'm not saying they're snobs but... let's put it this way, those people from the commercial world are perfectionists, especially for these kinds of event. They'd expect a delicate cuisine pairs with a fine tasting wine, in a well decorated ballroom. Those are the decisions that you and Callie need to make, not the wedding planner."

"Okay, now I'm scared." Arizona swallowed hard with widened eyes.

"Scare of what?" Callie asked as she came back to the living room.

"Addison just told me how hectic it would be to plan a wedding." Panicky blue eyes met with questioning brown eyes, made the furrow between Callie's brows went deeper.

"That's why we have Nicole." The brunette handed the mobile phone to her fiancée after sat down next to the pale woman.

"Nicole's job is to do what you two tell her to." Addison sighed heavily. She thought her best friend, who was coming from a family that had held numerous of dinner parties a year would have known the challenge of arranging one. "It's not her job to pick out the centerpiece from the thousands of choices, or to decide which font to use on the invitation. I really am not trying to scare you gals, just... It's harder than you think and you can't leave everything to the wedding planner."

"Addison is right." Arizona glanced at the brunette while she took a gulp of her wine. "It didn't seem such a big deal when we were just talking about it. But now we found the place and have set a date, it's really happening. It's right around the corner and I'm started to worry that I don't have time to do it. Herman is coming next week and we'll start the fellowship right away. And I still have my department to run in the same time. And the clinic! I don't spend much time in there but still, Bailey wants me to read the day to day report..."

"Don't listen to Addison. She just likes to stir up troubles." Callie threw a quick glare to her friend. She picked up Arizona's hands and looked into the blue eyes sincerely. "It's not right around the corner. It's months away from now. Don't worry about it, okay? And there are the two of us. We're a team. Whatever you can't do, I will."

"I am not trying to stir up troubles." Addison protested. "Just stating the obvious. You remember I told you about Bizzy's wedding party."

"You planned a wedding party that you didn't want to. Bizzy threw that at you and, may she rest in peace, Bizzy was a difficult person." The brunette gave her friend a bitter smile, still holding the hands of her fiancée. "You only had 1 week for that wedding but Arizona and I are going to have months to prepare it. And we have helps. You don't have to worry about us, Addie. You just need to make sure that you can find a cute suit for your little guy. You know he's going to be our flower boy, right?"

"Oh course you want this cutie pie at your wedding." Addison smiled to Callie before kissing the top of Henry's head. She knew her friend was trying to change the subject and she was glad to follow. "So he's going solo or you'll have another flower boy or girl walks down the aisle with him?"

"Arizona's friend has a daughter as cute as Henry, and we've talked about it." Callie turned to the blonde. "Show her the picture of Joyce?"

"That little darling is gonna be a heartbreaker..." Arizona unlocked her mobile phone with a smile, but it turned to a frown after seeing that she had a missed call. "Oh, Nick called, 4 hours ago."

"Did he leave a message?" Callie asked while Arizona trying to call back.

"No, he didn't. I wonder where he is now. The last time we talked on the phone he said he was in Nepal." Arizona put the phone next to her ear, but put it down after a second. "His phone is off. Maybe I'll try again tomorrow. Here, this is little Joyce."

She passed the phone to Addison showing the picture of the cute little girl that she and Callie were talking about. The night continued with a lighter conversation. After another Disney movie, another bottle of wine, they called it the night and the mother carried her sleeping son upstairs, and the engaged couple went to their bedroom packing up their luggage. Vacation was over and tomorrow, they are going home.
