Chapter 73

"Hey Jo, have you seen the interns?" Placing the stack of charts on the nurse station, Callie blew out a heavy sigh. "They are supposed to bring me the lab results but I couldn't find anyone of them. I had to get it myself."

"Oh, I sent them to the on-call room for a quick nap before they kill anyone." Jo glanced at her peer and went back on the chart that she was writing on. "They just all walked around like zombies."

"Why? They were here trolling for surgery last night?" The brunette asked with a smirk. She was an intern once. It was like yesterday that she'd stay in the hospital, hoping to run into some surgeries that needed an extra hand.

"No, as far as I know, they went out for a treasury hunt." The younger resident stopped her hand, smiling mischievously.

"Treasury hunt?" Callie raised her eyebrows to Jo while fixing her messy ponytails. She had been running around doing the interns' jobs for an hour. She had forgotten how exhausted it could be for doing the scut.

"Yeah. To the woods, looking for the ring that you threw away." Leaning closer to the brunette, Jo said in a whisper as if it was a secret.

"What?" The brunette's eyes widened. Was it a joke?

"You didn't know? They said Dr. Robbins promised to let them touch a baby in ultero if anyone can find it." The dirty blonde resident went on and on. "They all went there after their shifts over, marking maps and exchanging notes and stuff. It's like the biggest team project that they have ever worked on in the last 2 days."

"This is not right..." Callie shook her head, but her colleague just laughed out.

"We've all been there. Remember that time we had to watch Bailey's kid for a whole day so that she'd let us hold the suction? To be honest, this is quite a big prize from Robbins. If I weren't stuck in here, I'd..." Jo closed the chart that she finally finished signing. Lifting her head, she found the brunette was striding down the hall in a fast pace. "Hey, where are you going?"

Callie was going to look for the woman who started this. It was wrong in so many levels and it had to stop. It didn't take long for her to find the blonde on the OB floor. Arizona was in one of the ward talking to her patient. Through the window, Callie could see that the mother on the bed was holding a baby with tears running down her grinning face. And the man, who apparently was the father of the baby, stretching out his arms pulling the doctor into a hug.

The brunette couldn't help to smile seeing the sense unfolded. That was the joy that a fellow doctor could understand, the joy of saving someone's life and future. But her smile subsided as soon as the Fetal/Peds surgeon left the room and meeting her face to face, and she remembered why she was there.

"Calliope, you're here to see the magic of Fetal surgery?" The beaming smile never left her face when the attending walked out of the room and found her girlfriend was waiting outside.

"No, I'm here to see you." Callie said with a stern voice. She followed the blonde to the nurse station.

"Yeah? Something wrong with Sofia?" Arizona frowned at the brunette while handing the chart to the nurse. Their daughter was crankier than usual this morning and she knew that she should have given the little girl a check up before passed her to the hands of the daycare nurses.

"No, Sofia is fine." Putting a hand on her hip, Callie looked into the blue eyes. "Why would you order the interns to look for the ring?"

"Excuse me?" The blonde asked innocently. She had no idea what Callie was talking about.

"The ring! The ring that I threw into the woods!" Callie raised her hand in front of the pale face gesturing the empty spot on her finger. "Why would you make the interns to look for it?"

"I didn't!" Blue eyes bulged out of its eye sockets and head was shaking from side to side furiously.

"They are out there!" Tanned hand was flinging in the air. "I'm pretty sure a group of them are still out there searching for that stupid ring right now because you're going to reward them a surgery."

"I didn't... oh my gosh!" The blonde gasped with a hand over her mouth. She remembered it now. "It was a joke. Alex suggested that but I..."

"Why would he even suggest that?" The furious Latina didn't even give the poor woman any time to defend herself.

"We... we were in the OR making small talk and the ring came up..." Arizona rubbed her temples with the pads of her palms. It was just a playful conversation in the OR. How could the interns take that serious? "They... the interns must have picked it up and think that is a real offer. It's not, Callie. I didn't ask anyone to do anything."

"Just... call it off. I don't want that ring. Call it off and tell them that there has no reward or whatsoever." Still feeling angry, the brunette threw a glare at the shorter woman. "There are bears out there for god's sake."

"Wait, what do you mean you don't want the ring?" Dropping her hands on the side, Arizona stared at her girlfriend with a deep frown.

"I don't want that ring anymore. Just stop this madness before the chief found it out." Callie rolled her eyes to the ceiling heaving a heavy sigh. "Do you know how much trouble you're getting yourself into?"

"I told you that I didn't start this!" Arizona said through gritted teeth. How much more time does she need to say it?

Callie opened her mouth about to bicker back, a woman standing a few feet away staring at them that got her attention.

"Can I help you?" The brunette asked the stranger annoyingly.

"Doctors." The woman stepped closer and nodded to the two women. And she turned to Arizona. "Dr. Robbins, I'm Ann from HR."

"Yes Ann, we've met." Arizona reached out a hand exchanging a hand shake with HR staff. She had met with Ann a couple times when Mark was in trouble. It wouldn't be...

"Okay." The woman put on a professional smile, adjusting the files in her arms and she started. "We've received an anonymous complaint toward you that raises some questions. Do you have time to talk about this in my office?"

"Sure. Uh... my next surgery is in 2 hours..." The attending swallowed hard and she could feel her palms were sweating. It felt like being called to the principal's office and as a perfect student she was, she had never been called to the principal's office.

"Oh, I'm sure we'll have time enough." Ann smiled sweetly and leaded the way. Arizona followed with heavy steps.

"Arizona," Callie called after the blonde. The anger she had a minute ago was quickly replaced by concern. "Call me after?"

"She'd be okay, right?" Callie asked the man on the couch as she walked out of her bedroom after finished the final touch of her makeup. It was the date night with Arizona. She came home early, getting ready for this hopefully to be memorable night.

"Don't worry. I've had a handful of experiences with the HR." Mark glanced at his friend between making funny face to the baby on his laps. "They'd ask a couple of questions, writing a report then that is."

"That's just stupid. Why would she do that?" The brunette flopped down on the couch with a sigh. As soon as she was seated, Sofia jumped from uncle Mark's laps to mama. Mama's shinny big earrings were calling for her.

"I have Lexie talked to the interns. They didn't get the order from blondie. Just a few of the interns overheard the conversation in the OR from the gallery and they came up with the idea. And they swore that they didn't make the complaint to HR. They all went to the woods." Mark leaned over the coffee table picking up his beer. Looking over his shoulder to the brunette, there was a smirk on his face. "Well, except one. Guess who?"

"Murphy?" It didn't take much of time for Callie to have the picture popped up in her head.

"That girl really is a bad news. I should have just let the chief can her after she failed the intern exam." The man sighed in his beer bottle before taking a swig.

"You convinced the chief to keep her?" Angry with the whole situation, Callie couldn't help to scold at the man. "Why?"

"I've told you that her mother was an old friend. And I thought she deserved a second chance. How could I know she's so troublesome?" Mark played with Sofia's hand when the little baby reached out trying to grab his bottle. The baby let out a whine when her beloved uncle pulled the beer further away. "Have you talked to Robbins?"

"I tried. She was in surgery and didn't want to talk. Just hope it wouldn't ruin tonight." Callie stood up with her daughter in her arms when Sofia started to wriggle impatiently after failed to take what was on Mark's hand. The nurses had told her that the usually easy and sweet girl was being a bit difficult this afternoon.

"Have you told her that I'm here babysitting?" Watching the mother and daughter bounced around the living room, Mark remembered the conversation they had a day ago. "I know she doesn't like the idea of me spending time with Sofia."

"It's not that she doesn't like it... You just need to know the boundary." Callie threw an apologetic glance to her best friend while walking to the toys box in the corner, the brunette picked up a stuffed elephant for her restless daughter. "Stop acting like you're Sofia's father."

"I just... I want to have my own child so badly, Callie." Taking another gulp of the beer, Mark stared at the space before him. "I wouldn't hang onto yours if Lexie agrees to have a baby with me now."

"I know." Callie sighed. She knew having a family with Lexie was the man's dream. "At least she doesn't say that she won't have your kids."

"10 years, she said." The man smiled bitterly. "I'm in my mid 40s, Callie. I don't want to be a dad in my 50s. Think about it, in my kid's college graduation picture, I'll be a 70 years old guy looks like the grandpa."

"That's what you get when you're dating a child, Mark." The brunette teased her friend with a sad smile. "There's nothing else you can do."

"I don't know. Maybe..." Mark stared at the bottle in his hands. "I don't know. Maybe I should just find someone else who wants what I want. You know, having a family right now."

"You are crazy." Callie sat back down on the couch. Kid was a big issue between Mark and Lexie but that shouldn't be the deal breaker. "What? You think you'd be able to find someone tomorrow, fall in love right away and knock her up immediately and within a year, you'll have your own kid in your arms?"

"Sounds doable." The man shrugged a shoulder. He yelped loudly when a hard smack landed on the back of his head, and it startled Sofia that made that baby started wailing.

"You're an idiot." Callie stood up again trying to calm down her upsetting daughter. "You love Lexie. I know your womb is aching but do you really think that's reason enough to break up with her?"

Mark rubbed his head but said nothing. For a minute he just watched his friend walking around the living room cooing at her baby lovingly. He wanted this. He wanted to come home to a wife and their baby, having family life like this. But could he really picture himself with someone else other than Lexie?

The silence was broken when the front door opened and the blonde stepped in. At first she was surprised to see Callie was holding Sofia there because the baby should be with grandpa and grandma now. But she didn't have much time to think about it when her daughter saw her and letting out another heart wrenching wail.

"Mammm... Mamm..." Sofia almost jumped out of mama's arms when she tried to reach for mommy. The little girl buried her face on the blonde mother's chest as soon as Arizona dropped the bag and took the crying baby in her arms.

"Hey baby girl, it's okay. Mommy's here." Arizona kissed the top of the little head and threw a questioning glance to her girlfriend. "I thought my mom is going to take Sofia for the night?"

"She's not doing so well today. I think she's feeling really uncomfortable from the teething. I don't want to trouble your mother." Callie put her hand on the baby girl's back and rubbing circles softly. Sofia had calmed down once mommy holding her tight. "So I ask Mark to come over babysitting for a couple of hours when we go out for dinner."

"Oh..." The blonde gave a force smile to the babysitter of the night. She knew her mother was really looking forward to have Sofia overnight for the first time. Barbara even called her yesterday asking the baby's nighttime routine. She couldn't imagine how disappointed her mother was when Callie cancelled it.

"Hey, how was the meeting with Ann? Could you talk the charge away?" Mark called out from the couch with a smirk. "Each time she told me those couldn't make a case, but it was her job to have a talk with me."

"Easy for you to say." Arizona walked over to the living room sitting down next to her friend. "Yours mostly were sexual harassment. You did jump the nurses and then never looked back. But I am innocent. I didn't do anything. I haven't even asked anyone getting me coffee, ever."

"Don't be a drama queen, Robbins. The HR never takes those things serious." The man laughed out before finished his beer.

"What did Ann say?" The brunette sat down on the coffee table facing her girlfriend.

"Since this is an anonymous complaint, she's going to question all the interns about it. It could be easier if I can confront the person face to face." The blonde said with a pout, adjusting the baby on her chest that she missed the exchange of glance between Mark and Callie.

"It was Leah Murphy." Callie took a deep breath. "She filed the complaint."

"Why... why... why would she do that?" Arizona blinked her eyes a couple times, asking incredulously. Despite Leah was the reason for Callie's breakdown the last time, she had done nothing vindictive toward the intern. She even let Leah assisted on one of her surgery even though most of the attendings had reservation of the bitter woman's skill.

"She sees Callie as her competition since day one. You know that it wasn't the first time she tried to jeopardize Cal's career." Mark wriggled his fingers between the two women. "By definition, you two are one."

"But you have nothing to worry about, okay? As you said, it wasn't your idea to send the idiots to the woods looking for the ring." The brunette cut in quickly hoping to placate her upsetting girlfriend. "I've made a reservation in your favorite restaurant. You'll feel much better after a nice glass of wine."

"Callie..." Arizona looked down at the baby attached to her chest. "I really don't feel like going out tonight. I just want to take a bath and then snuggle up with you and Sofia..."

"What? No!" Callie exclaimed instantly. She had a proposal to make and she couldn't wait any day longer. "I mean, I know it has been a long day. You need to unwind, sweetie."

"Yeah." Mark clapped his hands gesturing Sofia to. The baby was hesitated for a second but eventually, she opened her arms and let uncle Mark taking her from mommy. "Sofia and I are going to watch some cartoon, maybe a little dance party before bed. We are going to have some fun. Right, Sofia?"

The little girl squeaked happily when uncle Mark took the stuffed elephant and tickled her playfully.

"Come on, honey. We've talked about this. 6 months of parenthood, we're going to celebrate." Callie put her hand on the blonde's knee, pleading with her big brown eyes. "Please?"

"Fine." Arizona sighed. She had promised Callie a date night after all. Looking at her girlfriend's smoking hot black dress and flawless make-up, she said after looking down at her own outfit. "But I'm too tired to change…"

"You don't have to. You look hot." Callie pulled the blonde up on her feet. "This jeans bring out your ass and you know I love it."

It wasn't an easy job for the women to leave their daughter. Sofia was clinging onto mama's long black hair when the brunette leaned down for a goodbye kiss. And the little dark eyes were filling with tear seeing mothers walked toward the door. Right after they closed the door behind, the wailing coming through the door nearly rip their hearts apart.

"Callie, shouldn't we..." Arizona stood outside the loft couldn't move her feet. The doctor side of her knowing that their daughter was experiencing some discomfort from the teething, nothing serious but the mother side of her really didn't want to leave her unwell baby behind. "She's crying."

"She'd be fine. Mark is there." The brunette took a deep breath to calm her stomach. Her heart clenched hearing the cry from their baby but... it turned into whimper and they could hear music coming from the inside. "See? Mark knows how to handle her. They're watching Mickey Mouse and friends. You know Sofia loves that show. She'd be okay."

Reluctantly, Arizona followed the brunette down the stairs and got into their car.
