Family Life, Chapter 16

February 2022

The alarm on Steve's watch went off shortly before 1 a.m., signaling that it was time for Danny's medication. Steve was in a deep sleep cycle so he was very groggy when he woke up. He sat up and tried to decide what to do first. Finally he stood and went over to check on Danny's machine. It needed fresh ice so Steve decided that would be first on his agenda. He snagged a small bottle of apple juice and a granola bar in the kitchen before he returned to the bedroom.

Steve sat next to Danny and gently shook him. "Danny, it's time to take your medication."

Danny was disoriented at first before the pain registered. He was having a rather erotic dream involving Steve and cashing in his rain check. Danny was disappointed to discover that he was in pain and not having sex with Steve.

"Steve, you could have waited another couple of minutes. I was almost there."

"Where?"

"You know, the big 'O'. You have the best mouth."

It took a few seconds but Steve finally realized what Danny was referring to. "Sorry about that. I brought you a snack so the pill won't tear your stomach up."

"Thanks, but I probably need to use the little boy's room first. Mom kept pouring fluids down me at supper."

Steve helped Danny out of bed and into the bathroom. He didn't want to go too far in case Danny got dizzy. Danny was still into his dream and flirted with Steve. "Hey, if you want to help you can hold it for me."

Steve flashed Danny his sexy grin. "As tempting as that sounds, I'll pass for now." Steve waited until Danny finished up and helped Danny back into the bedroom. Danny sat on the side of the bed to finish his snack before taking his pill. When Steve settled Danny back on the bed, Danny pulled him down for a kiss. It was a continuation of the kiss from earlier last night.

"What's going on Danny?"

"I want to cash in my rain check."

"Now?"

"Everyone else is asleep so we won't have any interruptions. I won't be able to reciprocate for now, but you said that you would." Danny realized that he was whining but didn't really care. It had been a long week so far and he knew that Steve was capable of wiping out a lot of his aches and pains."

Steve rubbed his forehead and tried to think if an orgasm would cause any damage. He couldn't come up with any reason not to comply with Danny's request. "Yes, I did. Let me lock the door just in case."

Steve locked the bedroom door and went back to Danny. "Just remember that Mom and Dad are down the hall so keep the noise down."

"You bet." Danny laced his fingers behind his head and smiled. He lifted his hips so Steve could pull his pants down far enough to free his erection. Danny was already at half-mast.

Steve leaned over to kiss Danny as his hand stroked lower. Soon his mouth replaced his hand although he was careful not to jostle Danny's knee. He loved doing this for Danny and had perfected his technique over the years. It wasn't long before Danny came; he was in no shape to exercise self-control. Steve looked up to see a very satisfied smile on his husband's face.

Steve went into the bathroom for a warm washcloth to clean Danny. He pulled the sleep pants up and covered Danny with the sheet. Now he was too aroused to go back to sleep so he went back into the bathroom for a little self-gratification. It wasn't very satisfying but it took the edge off enough so Steve could go back to sleep.

The next time Steve's watch alarmed, it was almost time for Steve to get up for his morning workout. Steve repeated the earlier routine without the blow job this time. Then he went down the hall to check on the boys. He decided to postpone his exercise routine until the boys left for school.

Steve went down the hall to wake Jack and Jesse. They were so happy to have their dads home again. Jack looked much more rested than he had when Danny was in the hospital. His first thought this morning was for his Danno.

"Daddy, how is Danno? Did he sleep okay last night?"

Steve remembered Danny's first wake-up and the ensuing sex and tried not to smirk. "Danno had a good night, and he's still asleep. I just gave him his medication and some fresh ice. You can look in on him if you're careful not to wake him."

The boys tiptoed down the hall and peered around the bedroom door. Danny was sleeping peacefully. Jack and Jesse were satisfied that Danno was doing well. They quietly went into the bathroom before dressing for school.

Mom and Dad were already drinking their first cup of coffee when Steve went into the kitchen. Mom had a mug of coffee waiting for Steve.

"Thanks Mom, it's good to have my morning coffee at home. I really missed this."

"You're welcome Steve. How was Danny's night?"

"He had a good night. I set my watch so I could give him his next dose of meds before the previous dose wore off. I gave him some juice and a granola with his pill so he wouldn't tear his stomach lining up. I also put fresh ice in his machine. I was up twice with him which was an improvement from the hospital routine. I think that tonight I'll put a bag of ice and his juice bottles in a cooler and stow it on the balcony. The ice might melt some but it will save me some steps at night."

"You're so good to Danny. I know that your family is friendly with Rachel and her family, but she treated him poorly even when they were still married."

"I know how it was when Danny first moved here, but that's in the past. Rachel and Stan have stepped in to help us with the boys whenever we asked. They supported us 100% when we brought Jesse home that first day. Rachel is going to pick the boys up for us this afternoon and drop them off. Charlie and Andy want to see how Danny is doing, so she asked if they could stop in for a few minutes."

"Steve, I know that you are right and I struggle with this whole issue. Dad and I love Charlie and Andy and I can see that it is right that you all have buried the hard feelings. I pray that I can let it go. Now that we're moving here it will be even more important to let it go."

"Mom, I know that you will find a way. You and Dad are two of the most loving people that I've ever had the good fortune to meet, and you raised an amazing son. Now how about I make everyone an omelet for breakfast."

Steve was busy at the stove when the boys came down for breakfast. He was cranking out veggie omelets quickly while Dad made toast. When breakfast was over, the boys went upstairs to check on Danny one last time before Dad chauffeured the boys to school.

"Danno is awake and ready to get up," Jesse was happy to report as he grabbed his backpack.

Steve hugged his sons and wished them a good day before climbing the stairs. Danny was sitting up and trying to disconnect his cooling machine. Steve went over to help him but Danny batted his hands away.

"I can get it. It just takes me a little longer, but I can do it."

Steve bit back a reply but stepped back to let Danny have his way. He let Danny finish and waited to see what Danny wanted him to do. Danny finally managed to get the hose separated from the sleeve and tried to swing his legs over the side of the mattress. Danny became frustrated when he was unsuccessful.

"I hate this! I can't even get up and pee by myself."

"Danny, you do fine once you get out of bed. Let me help you so you can go downstairs and have some breakfast. Mom has a cup of coffee waiting with your name on it."

That pacified Danny enough to cooperate with Steve. Once out of bed, Danny was able to navigate the bedroom and bathroom well enough. He took a few extra minutes to scrape some of the scruff off his face. There was more gray showing up every year, and Danny was vain enough to try to minimize it when he could.

Danny was dressing when he finally got the nerve to broach what was really bothering him. "Listen, about last night, I didn't get the opportunity to reciprocate. I didn't even stay awake long enough to say thank you. This is my brain on drugs. Will you forgive me?"

Steve made the supreme effort not to laugh. Danny was both earnest and miserable this morning.

"Danny, I didn't expect you to do anything. Once you get settled in bed, you're more or less stuck in one position. I was more than happy to help you out, and I was able to take care of my problem on my own." Steve shared a morning kiss with Danny but was careful to keep it light.

The trip down the stairs was interesting but Steve was there to steady Danny. Mom offered to make Danny some of her French toast, an offer Danny quickly accepted. He savored the rich coffee and asked to move to the lanai for breakfast. It was a beautiful morning and he wanted some fresh air.

Steve moved a footstool outside so Danny could prop his leg up and made Danny as comfortable as possible. Steve accepted two plates from Mom and ate breakfast with Danny. Mom and Dad joined them on the lanai. They wanted to talk about their move to the island.

Mom was excited about moving some place new but not at the expense of her son's happiness. "Danny, Steve talked to us last night about our move. We want to make sure that it is not going to be a problem for you and Steve."

"Mom, I realize that my brain is a little cloudy right now but I've never been more sure about anything except maybe marrying this big goof. Do you know what his first reaction was when I told him? He wanted to decorate your house with ours for Christmas, and then he wanted to merge our back yards so we could throw some really big parties. I have a question for you. Have you discussed this with the girls?"

Mom looked a little chagrined. "Well, I did tell them that we were thinking about moving to a warmer climate."

"So they're probably thinking you're moving to Florida to one of those retirement communities. Mom, there's a big difference between driving 14 hours from Jersey to Florida and flying 10 hours not including layovers to Hawaii. There's a six-hour time differential."

Dad spoke up now. "Danny, we barely see them and they're just across town. We can go back a couple of times a year and probably see more of them than we do now."

Danny and Steve were really sorry to hear that. They knew that the girls didn't appreciate how fortunate they were to have both of their parents nearby.

Steve pushed his empty plate aside and sipped his coffee. He could see the hurt in Mom and Dad's eyes. "Then their loss is our gain."

That was all Mom and Dad wanted to hear. "Cliff called last night while you boys were in the shower. They're coming in about an hour to walk through the house with us. The real estate agent is meeting us with the key. Barring any obvious problems, we're putting down a deposit so we can schedule a more complete inspection."

Danny was in a better mood after apologizing to Steve and polishing off a truly excellent breakfast. His mood improved even more to hear that his parents were moving ahead with their plans. There was a gentle breeze and the sound of the surf was lulling Danny into a nap.

Steve gathered the dirty dishes and went into the house to finish the cleanup. Mom and Dad went upstairs to get ready for their meeting. Steve sat with Danny outside until Danny stirred from his nap.

"Steve, I think that I'm ready to move to the living room. I'll be okay for a while if you want to go for a run. Mom and Dad are next door so I can phone them if I need them."

Steve considered the offer and thought Danny was also trying to get a little time alone. Danny was pretty sure on his feet now and Steve didn't see a problem. He called Mom and let her know he would be out for a bit. Then he changed his clothes and set out for his run. Danny had a bottle of water, a fresh ice pack, his cell phone, and the remote control. He found an old movie on TV and settled in for the morning.
