Chapter 25

Saito and Ivarod stood a distance away, Ivarod with his wand, ready to attack Saito, and Saito stood with Derf, poised to defend.

"Now!" shouted Saito, speaking to Derf. Ivarod went on the defensive, anticipating an attack, but was surprised when Derf began to glow a series of colors. The light transferred from Derf's body into Saito's hand and made its way through his arm just to settle in his chest, over his heart. The light dimmed into nothingness and Saito took a deep breath in preparation for his assault. He moved into a defensive position, hissing a bit as he felt the pain from the magic he absorbed eating away at him. He beckoned Ivarod to come at him and the mage grinned before disappearing.

Ivarod appeared in front of Saito, his wand sword ready to attack and he slashed at his enemy only to be blocked by Derf. Saito gritted his teeth as he pushed Derf against his enemy's blade before beginning to chant. Ivarod threw his body weight onto his sword which forced Saito back and the two's swords released for a moment. Saito continued to chant as they clashed swords once, twice, thrice more, sparks flying out in the process. The night was quickly approaching and soon they could barely see each other in the darkness, the only thing illuminating the landscape being the pink and blue moons that hovered over them.

Finally, Saito ceased chanting and Ivarod went on the defensive, incapable of knowing what attack Saito would use.

"Lunar Sword!" shouted Saito, thrusting Derf towards the two moons. Nothing happened for the moment afterward and Ivarod laughed, thinking the boy didn't have enough magical power left to use his sword's powers. A moment after, though, he was shocked when two beams of light, one pink, the other blue, hit the tip of Derf's blade. The two beams wrapped around Derf's sword and his blade began to glow a mix of pink and blue, the colors warping in and out of view on the blade's surface. The two beams ceased and Saito pulled the glowing sword down as he moved into a battle stance. "My most powerful attack and only capable under the two moons when they are full! This will be the attack that ends you!"

Ivarod took a step back as he watched Saito leap towards him. The king used his wand sword to catch the attack but was blown backwards as the lunar energy blasted him. He back flipped in mid-air and landed on his feet, watching Saito run over to him at a much slower speed than before.

Must be significantly weakened from before, thought Ivarod with a grin. I'll defeat him easily as long as I avoid the blade.

Saito smashed Derf against Ivarod's sword wand again but was parried before Ivarod smashed his fist into Saito face, throwing him back. Saito landed a few feet away and rolled back onto his feet before clutching his nose which was probably broken. Saito slashed at the air and sent out a wave of lunar energy at Ivarod which he managed to dodge but was no longer moving at super-speed.

He's running out of magical energy, thought Saito, panting, harshly. I have to take him down before my lunar sword finishes or he won't take enough damage from my attack.

"Take this!" shouted Saito as he flung himself at Ivarod. The man barely managed to parry the attack before pushing Saito off of him. Saito landed on his feet and lunged at Ivarod from near the ground which caught the mage off guard. Saito managed to slash at Ivarod's leg, creating a large gash as he ran past him, only to be kicked with Ivarod's good leg.

The familiar landed a few feet away and began to get up while wiping the fresh blood which dripped down his face.

"So much for your lunar blade attack," said Ivarod, smug at the fact that Saito's attack hardly did anything to him. Saito grinned at him and pointed down, causing Ivarod to look down at the wound Saito created. He gasped when he saw light in the same colors of Saito's sword climbing up around the wound. Suddenly, he felt pain shoot through his leg and he knelt down and clutched it. "What the hell did you do?!"

"My attack is my most powerful because every wound I inflict on my opponent with it, infects my opponent with a kind of poisonous energy. The deeper the wound is, the further it spreads and the more damage it causes. That little cut won't go higher than your knee or lower than your ankle but it will make it hard to move," explained Saito as he attempted to catch his breath. Forcing the opponent to ask questions or be stunned always helped to be able to get a breather.

Ivarod growled in annoyance and clutched his leg again. He gritted his teeth and forced himself up, glaring at his opponent. He winced in pain when he stood fully erect and began to strut over to his opponent, limping lightly, and pulled out his wand sword. Saito rose up as well and ran towards Ivarod, Derf poised to slash again. Ivarod grinned, happy his fake out worked, and his sword wand retracted. He shot out a series of fireballs at his opponent, catching Saito off guard and hitting him in multiple places. Saito had crossed his arms to protect his torso but the rest of his body, along with his arms, were pounded away at by the small fireballs. When they ended, Saito was bleeding, burned, and battered from the barrage.

Both men were panting, heavily, and looking at each other.

"Seems we're both handicapped now," said Ivarod, a small grin on his face.

"Seems like it," said Saito, returned the grin. The two moved into an attack stance and prepared.

Almost there, thought the two in unison. They blasted off the ground, both quickly running out of magical power to use, and they smashed their swords together. Sparks flew out in every direction as the two smashed swords over and over and at one point the two were fighting to see who could push the other back.

Being the larger one, Ivarod was managing to push Saito back but his enemy used that moment to slip underneath his blade and clip his left hip. Ivarod hissed in pain when he felt the lunar poison spread out over the cut and he turned to see Saito standing behind him, sword poised for another slash. He was panting heavily so he was mostly reaching his limit, but so was Ivarod.

The man gripped his wand, tightly, trying to ignore the pain in both his leg and hip, before launching himself at his enemy. His and Saito's swords crashed again but this time Ivarod used his momentum to push off Derf and flip over Saito. Saito cussed under his breath and turned to barely catch a pierce which Ivarod aimed at his heart. The pierce clipped Saito on his ribcage, just below his left armpit, which cause him to hiss in pain and bounce back away from his opponent. He clutched his wound and pulled his hand away to see his hand covered in blood.

Saito growled and leapt at Ivarod for an attack, smashing Derf so hard onto Ivarod's blade that the wand sword was pushed out of the way. Derf's blade made a deep gash straight down Ivarod's chest from mid-chest to the beginning of his abdomen. Ivarod roared out in pain, both from the wound and the poison which spread from it. Saito landed in front of him and grinned as he watched his enemy come close to their end. Ivarod glared at him and used his remaining magic to slash at Saito's body at full speed, cutting through his chest and abdomen in a diagonal cut. Saito hissed in pain and staggered back, clutching the painful wound.

When Saito looked back at his opponent, said man had dropped his wand to the ground and was on his knees, clutching his wounds as the poison spread. The light had spread out from his leg wound, covering his entire shin and calf of his right leg. It spread from the one at his left hip, down into his left thigh and up around the back of his body. The wound on his chest spread over his entire chest, over his abdomen and climbed up his neck. The poison was causing him severe pain as it slowly destroyed his body. Saito made his way over to the mage and looked down at him while clutching his own wounds.

"It's over, Ivarod. You've lost," said Saito, calmly, prepared for another attack from his enemy.

"Seems it is. I will not survive the poison, and my kingdom will soon be informed by the remnants of my army about my betrayal. I won't survive any longer, so just put me out of my misery," said Ivarod, glancing up at his opponent why gritting his teeth.

"I won't kill you. You need to suffer for all the damage you've done, the lives you've taken," said Saito, angrily. Ivarod sighed in defeat, knowing he couldn't get Saito to kill him with just words.

"If that's how it is…" began Ivarod, a sly smile forming on his lips. "Then I'll just take you with me!"

Ivarod pushed off the ground and lunged at Saito's neck, causing him to jump backwards. Saito knew he wasn't going to be able to get away fast enough and Ivarod probably still had the strength to kill him with his bare hands. Saito thrust Derf through the man's chest in order to save himself and Ivarod stopped moving.

"Thank…you…" breathed out Ivarod as his life force dissipated from his body. Saito pulled Derf out and watched the man fall to the ground, landing with a loud thud. Saito panted, the adrenaline now wearing off completely. He looked at his enemy's body and knew that he was dead and so he stepped away.

"What now, Partner? You won," said Derf, confused by Saito beginning to walk away from his enemy.

"Louise…must see her…make sure she's okay," said Saito, weakly, the pain and damage he had quickly catching up to him. The light of the sword dissipated and Saito dropped Derf on the ground before quickly collapsing.

"Partner!" shouted Derf. Saito ignored the sword and continued to crawl towards his love's body, barely able to make out her outline in the darkness of the night.

"L…ouise…I…'m sorry…" breathed out Saito, ashamed he wasn't able to protect her from the serious damage she had taken. He collapsed once more onto the ground and his eyes drooped shut. There was a silence in the air, one that made Derf very uncomfortable.

"Partner? Saito, Partner, can you hear me?! PARTNER!" shouted Derf when Saito didn't react to him. The silence continued as Derf's voice echoed in the distance. What happened to Saito?
