Chapter 36

"It all started fifteen years ago when Saito and I were four years old," began Asuna as she began her story of how she met Saito and how their relationship had progressed.

(This part of the story will be narrated directly by Asuna so I won't be participating. Enjoy!)

When Saito and I were four years old, we had officially met. My mom and dad had decided that we should move back to Tokyo, my mother's birth city. We had found a cozy little home in the suburbs and, within the first week, mom had found out that her high school best friend was living nearby. She was elated and it only took a couple days for her to introduce me to Saito.

Saito was just as social when he was little as he is now. He was excited to meet me and he became really friendly, asking me all sorts of things like my favorite color or where I lived before. I didn't really like it because I was really shy as a child, but I eventually got used to it. Saito's outgoing personality eventually rubbed off on me and I became more adventurous and carefree.

When Saito and I were six, we decided to explore the neighborhood by ourselves. Our mothers had left us in the backyard to play in a sandbox that Saito had had a long time ago. We snuck out through the gate and wandered into the street and began going around. We were exploring the street, not really going too far, until we heard something strange. When we turned around we saw a big dog, I think it was a golden retriever. It was running towards us and I got excited because I thought it looked cute. When I began walking towards it, Saito pulled me back and, when I looked at him, his eyes were serious. I hadn't realized it at the time, but the dog had had rabies and it was coming to attack us. By the time I had realized something was wrong was, the dog was about to get to us.

Before I had gotten a chance to try dodging the dog, which I probably couldn't have done because I had been frozen in fear, Saito had leapt in front of me.

I remember it so clearly, the complete and total horror of watching Saito get bit by the dog. I remember seeing the blood spatter out of his wound that encompassed a huge section of his shoulder. The dog had leapt at him and he was forced onto his back while it continued to dig its teeth into his shoulder as the foam from its mouth dripped into his wounds and he screamed in pain. I was horrified and frozen in fear. I didn't know what to do. It only took a few minutes until I heard our mothers and Saito's father running toward us, shouting.

Saito's father had kicked the dog off Saito and restrained it while his mother went over to him and cried over him while my mother called for an ambulance.

Everything after that went so fast. Saito was taken to the hospital where he got a few stitches and some injections to deal with any infections and rabies he might have gotten from the dog. When Saito came out he looked like he was in pain and I couldn't help but cry and mutter 'Sorry' a million times. Even though it was my fault, Saito didn't blame me. Instead he pulled me into a hug and soothed me. I'm pretty sure I fell in love with him and his kindness back then.

For years after, we were practically inseparable. We would always be at either my house or his, always playing. Even when we met Hikaru, Sakura, and Toriyama, we never stopped being as close as we were. In middle school, Saito had finally gotten tired of Hikaru and Toriyama's teasing about us being like a couple and he asked me out. We started going out in 7th grade and continued until around early 11th grade.

We were really happy as a couple. Saito took me out almost every weekend and I was really happy with our relationship. I even gave him my first time and it was amazing both that time and every one after that. Well, until I screwed everything up. Before our relationship ended, I had met someone.

The guy was a foreign exchange student from America and he was absolutely gorgeous. He had blond hair with blue eyes, his skin was beautiful, he was muscular, rich. He caught my attention almost immediately. I didn't really think anything at first, but I guess he became interested in me. He started to hit on me and tried to butt in whenever Saito and I were together. Saito gets very jealous about these kinds of things and, after the third or fourth time of the guy hitting on me and me not pushing him away, Saito and I had a fight. This fight was more serious than our previous fights and, since he started it, I punished him by not talking to him for a couple weeks. That might have been a bit much, but I was just so mad that he was blaming me for it. Without Saito around, the foreign guy started to hit on me more, and since Saito wasn't around as a buffer I fell for his charms. I ended up going on a date with him and it ended with us going all the way. It felt amazing but wrong that I had cheated on Saito. I was going to have to break up with Saito before my relationship went any further with that guy, but, when I had walked out of the hotel with him, Saito had been passing by. He looked so hurt and I felt terrible for what I had done. Saito ended up not coming to school for a couple days after and he refused to talk to me.

The day that Saito had disappeared, I had tried to talk to Saito again. I went to his house but his mom said he was out and I waited at his house for him. It had been hours, already reaching a very late time. Saito's mom began calling him and our other friends to see if they had seen or heard from him. No one had and his mom and I had gotten worried. By the time a week had past, his parents had been wrecks from losing their son; his sister had gotten depressed and just stayed in his room for days. Our other friends were depressed and we didn't hang out much to give each other space.

I…I probably took it the hardest out of everyone. I put full blame of his disappearance on myself because I had cheated on him. I had hurt him worse than anybody and I thought that he had left because he was depressed. I ended up breaking up with the foreign guy and had vowed that Saito was the only one for me. I ended up not even talking to guys for the entire time Saito was gone. Well, I talked to Hikaru and Toriyama, but that's because they are my close friends.

When I finally saw Saito again, I was happier than I had ever been. I thought I had lost him forever but he came back into my life. I never want to let him go again which is why I'm so hostile towards Toriyama who almost took Saito away from me again. I don't think I could live if I had Saito torn away from me again. I mean, I was already heartbroken when I found out he was married, but if he was actually gone, I just don't think I could deal with it.

End Asuna Narration

"So yeah…that's why I don't really know how to forgive Toriyama," said Asuna, looking at the grass, dejectedly.

"Wow, nee-san, you and Saito-san have a long history. You two have been together for almost your entire lives," said Gwen who had closely listened to her sister's story.

"I know, that's why I'm so close to him," said Asuna, cracking a small smile. The two sat in silence for a moment until they heard laughing and loud conversations from inside. "I wish I could go in and watch them, inconspicuously."

"You could always join them," suggested Gwen, trying to appease her sister.

"I don't think so…" said Asuna, dejectedly. While the two sat in silence again, they heard a rustling in the bushes and within moments, a chestnut-colored cat came out from the bushes. "Hey there."

The cat wandered over to Asuna when she called it and made itself comfortable on her lap. She smiled and petted it.

"He's cute," said Gwen, leaning over to look at the cat.

"He is," began Asuna as she looked at the cat. "It's cool, how easily animals can get around without being noticed. He's probably been in those bushes for awhile, listening to my story. I wish I could be so inconspicuous like that…"

Asuna continued to stare at the cat blankly until she and Gwen were startled by something. The Vindalfr runes on Asuna's hand began to glow on their own and she was confused by the randomness. The light only grew and it enveloped the scene.

"So then…" continued Saito as he told his story.

"KYAAAAHHH!" screamed Gwen and Asuna from outside. Everyone's attention was flung in the direction of the screams and Saito was the first to his feet.

"The hell?" said Saito before grabbing Derf from the floor and preparing for a possible attack.

When the group made it outside, they were both surprised and confused by what they saw.

"Gwen? What's going on?" asked Saito, confused that she was sitting next to two cats and was wearing a shocked expression.

"N-N-N-N-…Asuna-nee…she…she turned into a cat!" shouted Gwen, causing everyone to turn to the cats. When Saito inspected the cats, he realized that one did have a familiar fur color. And by familiar, he meant it was the same silver as Asuna's hair.

"Nyaaa! Saito! What the hell is this?!" shouted the silver furred cat which now proved that it was Asuna.

"What happened, Asuna? How did you do this?" asked Saito, confused by the situation.

"I found this cat over nyare and my rune started to glow and I turned into a cat!" explained Asuna, frantically. "Speaking of which, where is my rune?"

Asuna began to twist and turn, searching for her run until it had caught Saito's eye.

"It's there on you paw pad," said Saito, pointing to Asuna's right paw. Asuna sat down properly and lifted up her paw to look at it.

"Well, nyaow what?" asked Asuna, aloud, as she continued to stare at her rune.

"Well, if you transformed, does that mean you were thinking about the cat?" asked Saito, receiving a nod from Asuna. "Then why don't you try imagining your human self and wish to transform back. I remember that that's how it worked when you transformed parts of your body. Plus, your powers are all based on willpower, so it wouldn't be too surprising if will-"

Before Saito could even finish his explanation, Asuna had already done as he had said and her rune glowed again. Her entire body glowed and began to warp in shape as it transformed back into her human form, the glow receding back into her runes within a minute or so. The glow of the runes faded and Asuna was back to normal.

"Amazing," said Kurata from behind Saito.

"I swear her powers are the best of the familiars," said Toriyama from off to the side, his eyes gleaming with fascination. Saito had breathed out a 'Yeah' before Asuna broke out in a fit of giggles. She leapt at Saito, wrapping her arms around his neck, and startled him.

"Did I ever tell you how much I love you for introducing me to Halkeginia?" asked Asuna. Saito couldn't help but blush at both the closeness of his friend and her words, meanwhile Louise was seething with rage.

"Saitooooo…" growled Louise, causing Saito to squeak in fear. In response, Asuna merely snuggled into Saito more, causing Louise to pull out her wand. "EXPLOSION!"

And Saito was, for the billionth time of his life, blown up…The blast even pushed him up onto his roof. Wonder how he plans to get down.

So? What did you guys think?

Oh my gosh, yes! TheCuriousReader and I had planned out Asuna's transformation ability back during the pre-War training and I have been DYING to find somewhere to put it. I felt like Asuna's longing to become inconspicuous and stealthy like the cat would be a good trigger for her transformation.

Let me know what you guys thought about that and the backstory by Reviewing!

Anyways, until next time...byeee :D
