It was just a day from Jeff's 17th birthday. Paul was already going into town, he was eager to get the ball rolling, so to speak. Ready to get his life back, his home and everything else that was taken from him this past year. He knew that there was a near-by photo place that allowed you to print the pictures out yourself. He had it all planned out ahead of time. He would print the pictures, call in to the police and claim that he knew someone, a child hood friend and how he thought there was something going on between him and a minor, give them the man's address and see how it goes. Then when the time was right, he would send in a letter, with one of the pictures that he had took and send it to the police station. They will already know who was in the picture. Mark and Jeffrey. Since the police would already have started an investigation into the first phone call that Paul had made earlier. That would be it. It would be done. Proof and Mark would be arrested, imprisoned. And Jeff, being a minor still would be sent off somewhere, Paul didn't really care were. Just that the house would be empty, and Paul could just move right in, just as if it was his home all along.
He deserved it, dealing with Mark for as long as he did. All the trouble he had caused. The whining and crying he had to endure those first months after the fire. After-all, he did kill his whole family. At-least, in Paul's mind, he did. And in Paul's mind, he should have been sent there a long time ago. Paul smiled, just imagining it all. He couldn't wait for everything to be his.
"Call it what you want, but that man did nothing I ever told him. He ruined every project I got into. I tried to help him out time and again, getting him a job after job and what does he do but say I'm just using him. He tells me, he doesn't want my help, doesn't need it. Well, we will see if he needs someone's help, now. See if anyone comes to his aid. It will be terrific. After everything I've ever done for him, and he treated me so unkind. Never returning my phone calls Never wanting to see me. I was lonely and I needed a friend. But did he care, no. So now, I don't care. Not that I really ever did." Paul whispers to himself. Laughing silently.
He had the pictures in a envelope, he was clutching them to his stomach. a wide smile over his face. He was going to enjoy watching Mark's world being flipped up side down. Enjoy watching it fall apart. Much like he enjoyed watching the burning fire engulf the home, so many years ago. It would be delightful. Just delightful.
Mark and Jeff were sitting down at the kitchen table. Enjoying a nice breakfast to themselves. Just the two of them, how they liked it. Mark fumbled through the small pile of mail. "Got another letter from Matt, Jeff."
Jeff eagerly grabbed the letter from Mark's grasp.
"I wonder how he's doing?" Jeff replies.
Mark slides his plate to the side, and grabs his cup of warm coffee, he takes a sip.
"What's it say?"
Jeff looks at Mark momentarily. "Nothing much. He says he's still dating that girl, Amy. I was hoping he could wait until he got out of there to pick up dating."
Mark nods, his elbows on the table and asked if Jeff was done with his pancakes before reaching over to pick the plate up before standing up from his seat and placing the dirty dishes in the sink to be washed later.
"You know he can't help it if he found someone in there that he likes. You should be happy for him, Jeffrey."
"I am, I'm delighted that he's doing good, I just don't want him to get hurt, and then slide back to being sick again. And heartache can do that. It can."
Mark looks over his shoulder to Jeff. A smile on his face. "And you of all people would know about heartache, huh?"
Jeff rolls his eyes. "Shut up and do the dishes."
It was 11:45 AM when the ambulance paramedics got the call. It was a deceased man, in his late 40's to early 50's.
"So what do you think it was that got him?"
"You mean killed him?"
"Of course."
"It was an apparent heart attack. But won't know for sure until later."
"What's in his hand." The paramedic asks as he walks up the sidewalk street.
