Hey guys MT here!
I'm really sorry for being so late and I do have both chapters for the last two weeks. These past two weeks have literally been ridiculous. I've had non-stop tests and papers so I was REALLY booked.
Also, I've decided to create a Twitter for my accounts of Fanfiction, Youtube, and Deviantart. Since I'mnot as active on the latter two, it will mostly be used for you guys to communicate with me and vice versa. I hope you all will use it to keep in touch outside of fanfiction! Just look up: Mega_Trainer07 on Twitter and hit the one with my profile pic!
Remove the spaces and that's the link!
Anyways, ENJOY!
Chapter 65
Everyone was in Otr's study and waited while Eir brought down several books from around the library. Otr thanked her and set them on his desk before spreading them out.
"I assume none of you can read our language?" asked Otr, curiously.
"No, sadly. I'm amazed at how close our verbal languages are but our written languages are completely different," said Saito, smirking a bit. Otr laughed at his statement before the two were interrupted by Louise.
"Saito, don't mess around. We have to leave later or else it could cause problems," scolded Louise, causing the laughter between Saito and Otr to disappear. He nodded at her and then turned to the Dwarfish prince.
"Alright, we wanted to know how advanced your technology is. So far, only nobles and the royal family really know about it and we wouldn't be able to get much out of either of them…well, until you approached us," said Saito, calmly.
"Well, the giant mechanical golems you saw are, as my father calls them, mechs. The explosive that my father's men tried to drop on your home are known as great charges. They contain quite a large amount of gunpowder but we have plenty of the ingredients in these mountains. Ah yes, the thing that dropped the great charge was flying machine. I've thought of better names such as 'balloon' and the 'sailless ship' but father found them uninteresting. The flying machines are run by steam power as are the mechs. I had designed the steam based power source but father only wishes to use them for war," explained Otr, causing Saito to gape at him.
"This is ridiculous. You're inventing things that many people from my world were needed to invent," said Saito causing Otr to lean forward in his chair, a bit of excitement in his eyes.
"Your world? Is there possibly another world aside from the one we currently reside? If there is I would love to go there. I'm sure there is less war than in this one," said Otr, sighing as he said the last part.
"Well, we actually had more war but my world isn't very relaxing. It's not easy to make money and all sorts of laws would stop you from creating things. Even gathering knowledge like you have would be hard," said Saito, causing Otr to frown and slouch a bit, muttering a curse as he did so. "But some of the things you've created exist in my world. They have for the last couple hundred years. The steam based power source you created is called a steam engine, the flying machine is called a zeppelin while smaller versions are called blimps, and great charges are called bombs as well as explosives, though the latter is usually used for less devastating bombs."
"Fascinating. Is our world really so far behind in technology? It must be due to magic. With magic it hadn't been as necessary to advance technology. I don't have anything against it but those who wield magic become so full of themselves that they refuse to advance anything aside from their magic," said Otr, a bit disappointed at the thought.
"T-There's actually a magic u-user back in our home who is a l-lot like you. He's very kind and loves creating things b-but he always seems a little s-sad because most of the things he creates e-end up being used in w-war," said Tenshi, speaking for the first time. Otr looked over at her and his eyes lit up.
"I would love to meet him. If I were to teach him all that I know and vice versa, we would be able to move quite far forward in our advancement of technology," said Otr.
"Ah, by the way, I had a question but you have something called electricity, correct?" asked Saito after remembering Gramma's words.
"Yes, of course. We use the steam engine in order to generate it. I assume you also have that in your world?" said Otr, curiously.
"Yeah we do but we also call it 'electricity'. I was wondering where you got the name for it," asked Saito, curious as to how they had used the same name.
"You call it the same? Then possibly…" began Otr while thinking. He looked back up at Saito and could see him staring at him with curious eyes. "Well, we had originally discovered electricity nearly 15 years ago by of course. I don't want to go into the specifics because it is a long story but a couple years afterward, a portal opened up in the sky during a solar eclipse and a large and strange machine flew out. The machine crashed into a nearby mountain and I went with a large group to investigate. When we got there, many people were dead in the wreckage and we found one man who lived with quite some injuries. We tended to his wounds and took him back to the palace but when he woke up and tried to speak to us, we didn't understand him at all. The only thing we really understood was one time when I was playing around with the electricity. Some of it shot out of the copper rope I had and, when he saw it, he began shouting 'electricity'. We ended up using the word and attempted further communication with him but after a year, he began to get depressed. I feel that he might have been from your world and the shock of coming to this one was too much to handle. He ended up jumping into one of the canyons that surround the capital not long after. I was probably the one who felt the worst about it because he always seemed to have an interest in what I was working on. He may have also been one interested in technology."
"Wow, so those planes that disappear really do just vanish…" said Saito to himself.
"Planes? Is that what you call the flying machines? It isn't very appealing but I would love to use it should I ever create such a machine," said Otr, excitedly. Saito chuckled a bit at his enthusiasm and thought on his words. So people coming from his world happened more often than he thought.
"I have another question, though it might be a bit uncomfortable to answer," said Saito, receiving a serious nod from Otr. "Why exactly do your people and father hate magic users? I mean, Ivarod was just evil, but I don't get that feeling from the Dwarves."
Otr seemed to pause at Saito's question and lean back in his chair to think. Saito anxiously waited for a response and Otr finally opened his mouth to speak.
"Well, it probably had to do with what happened to my mother," began Otr, causing Saito to frown. "I'm sure you've heard that Dwarves live much longer than the magic users of Halkeginia. We live nearly 300 years as opposed to your maximum of 100. Well, not long after I was born, a small group of magic users infiltrated the castle and attempted to kill me and my two siblings. My mother protected us but died doing so and my father lost one of his eyes as he killed them. I had heard that he wept for my mother for weeks after that. Apparently the group was a mix of Valkyrie, Elf, Gnome, and even a fairy. It was after that that my father began to hate magic users. The people had heard about the situation and the death of, as they called her, the 'Kindest Queen in Dwarf History'. The people were infuriated and it ingrained a deep hatred in their hearts. The reason why I'm not in the same mindset is both that I was a baby at the time and didn't know my mother and the fact that I don't believe in the idea that one small group's actions should affect the populace."
Saito stared at the Dwarven prince and frowned a bit, feeling some pity. He essentially grew up without a mother but he seemed to turn out very well despite that.
"D-Do you think t-there's any way to change their m-minds about it?" asked Tenshi. Saito, Louise, and Otr looked at her and she became a bit flustered. "U-Um…well it's just…for the Valkyrie, they let go of their hate of Halkeginians after Ivarod had betrayed them so I was wondering if there was a way to get the Dwarves to let go of their own hatred."
"Hm…" said Otr as he thought. "Well, of course they could let go of it however I doubt it will be easy. I don't think there's much I could do so you all would have to deal with it. All I can really do is give you information."
"Then we should keep in touch somehow," said Saito before thinking about some way to keep in touch.
"Oi, Partner, why don't you use Vivlio to make a magic tool that this guy can use?" asked Derf, loudly.
"That's a great idea. Hey, Vivlio," said Saito as he knocked on the magical book's cover.
"Huh? What? What's going on?" said Vivlio in a bit of a daze, causing Saito to sweat-drop.
Were you actually napping during these important discussions? thought Saito, a bit annoyed.
"Vivlio, can you make a communication device that Otr can use?" asked Saito, causing Vivlio stop moving for a second. Said magical book bounced over to look at the Dwarf and then turned back to Saito.
"Yeah I can do it for this midget. It might not be as clear over long distances since he ain't got magic but it's doable. Now just activate your Myoz powers and we're good to freaking go," said Vivlio, receiving an understanding nod from Saito. Saito placed his hand on him and the runes on his forehead glowed before he removed his hand. Vivlio pages flipped open, stopping on a random page, and a small ball materialized on the page. As soon as Saito picked it up, he immediately understood how it worked before handing it over to Otr and quickly explaining how to use it.
"I think we should go now Saito. I think we've overstayed our welcome a bit and we still have a chance of getting caught," said Louise, some seriousness in her voice. Saito nodded in agreeance with her.
"Thank you very much Otr and we'll be sure to keep in touch. We should probably escape the way we came since we know it bes-," said Saito before being interrupted by a loud knocking.
"Milord Otr! King Hreidmar calls for you. Please come immediately!" shouted a voice coming from the other side. Saito, Louise, and Tenshi panicked because they thought they were about to be discovered but Otr merely sighed.
"One moment! I am with my dear at the moment!" shouted Otr, causing Eir to blush a bit. The guard shouted out an 'Alright' and Otr beckoned them to the back of the library after walking over there. The group watched him as he pulled a book out and cranked a crank in different directions before replacing the book. A loud clank sounded and a section of the bookshelf next to where the crank was sunk in. Otr went over and pushed it, revealing a secret stone tunnel.
"This tunnel is one that I used to use to sneak out of the castle to see Eir. It leads out of the castle and to the side of the mountain in which this palace is carved into. If you follow it, you should be fine," explained Otr receiving an understanding nod from Saito. Saito then urged Louise and Tenshi into the tunnel and turned to Otr.
"Thank you for everything and we'll keep in touch. Try to stay safe," said Saito, receiving a grin from Otr. Said Dwarf pushing him into the tunnel and began closing the bookshelf door, Saito's last view being Eir waving at him with a bright smile.
So? What did you guys think?
I'm not sure if I've been putting enough detail in these chapters but I hope it isn't too bad!
