Chapter 66

Saito, Louise, and Tenshi had followed the tunnel and it led to a wall which they had discovered had a large button which opened a door in the wall. Once they were through, the door closed again and they found themselves off to the side of the entrance to the palace in a less populated area.

"I-It looks late. W-We should get b-back," said Tenshi, looking up at the sky. Saito inspected the sky and noticed that storm clouds were rolling in and the sun was getting low. He nodded and the trio began to make their way back to the meeting point.

The group met up with Asuna, Gwen, and Tiffa and explained everything to them, Vivlio also making Saito his own communicator to be able to communicate with Otr if necessary.

"So that's how it is," said Saito after explaining everything.

"Wow, to think one of the royal family would help you like that. He must really not care about the war," said Asuna, surprised.

"Yes, it's quite surprising," said Gwen, only a bit of surprise on her face as she was more composed.

"Now that we have this info, though, and an ally, too, we can more safely inspect the country. It may be a while before Otr contacts us again, though. During that time we should-," explained Saito before being interrupted by a buzzing sound. The girls looked around confused and Saito looked down to his pocket before pulling out the small, spherical communication device. He pressed a button on the device and it ceased its buzzing. "Hello?"

"Ah, Sir Hero. I'm glad that I managed to properly use the device," said Otr from the device.

"You can just call me Saito and what's the problem, Otr? Do you need us for something?" asked Saito, curiously.

"Well, I actually needed a favor. I am unable to escort Eir back due to the fact that I am going to be in a meeting with my father and brothers until late and I don't feel comfortable sending her back at such a late hour. Would you please assist me? I would greatly appreciate it," explained Otr.

"Seems a little strange to trust people you just met to escort your fiancée but I don't have any complaints. Having an ally like you here is important so I don't think it would be much of a problem," said Saito, calmly.

"Very good! She will be outside the secret exit within the hour. Also, please be careful, friends. It seems someone saw you all and father has gotten suspicious he may increase the security of the capital so please watch yourselves," warned Otr, seriously.

"Thank you, Otr," said Saito, seriously. Saito turned off the communication device and looked over to Louise. "Louise, you heard right? We should leave now."

Louise nodded and the two waved everyone off before leaving, not taking any others with them because it would be more difficult to hide with more people.

The two met Eir at the exit to the secret tunnel as they were told and she had a small coat hanging on her arm.

"Hello magic users. It is nice to see you both again," said Eir, smiling at them.

"Nice to see you two. Oh, and you can call me Saito and my wife here Louise," said Saito, gesturing between himself and then to Louise. Eir nodded while smiling and then began to walk off.

"Otr can be so finicky with these things. Please forgive him for asking such a task of you. And you are on a secret mission and everything," said Eir, apologetically.

"Don't worry about it. After how Prince Otr is helping us, it's the least we could do," said Louise, smiling at the Dwarven woman. Eir nodded and smiled as she continued to lead the two to her home. They arrived after no more than twenty minutes of walking and the two waved Eir off before disappearing into the night. As they walked, Saito felt a few drops of rain hit him and then it suddenly began to pour, causing Louise and Saito to pull on their hoods and running for cover.

They found themselves a small, stone building, completely vacant and falling apart.

"Man, that rain is coming down hard," said Saito as he pulled off his hood and shook off the water.

"I saw the rainclouds but I didn't think it would come on so quickly," said Louise as she did the same. The two looked out into the dark area, only illuminated by a few lampposts and whatever lightning occurred. Saito could see a couple other stone buildings that looked like they were falling apart as well. There were also stone brick walkways leading out to an area that almost looked like a cliff.

"These are some kind of ruins. It looks like we're pretty close to the edge of the city, too. I wonder why Eir lives so close to here," said Saito, confused.

"I was talking to Eir while you were checking the surroundings and she said her family is made up of well-renowned archeologists. They might have been excavating this area. I know that even in Halkeginia, they are always looking for ancient artifacts and such," explained Louise causing Saito to mouth an 'O' in understanding.

"Well that seems to make more sense," said Saito before a bit of an awkward silence overtook them. "I hope the rain doesn't take too long to let up. We're gonna catch a cold if we don't get out of these wet clothes."

"It is unpleasant having my clothes stick to me like this. This is why I hate going out in the rain," said Louise as she pulled at her wet clothes. Louise then seemed to think something a bit obscene as her face became completely red and she trembled a bit in embarrassment. "Y-Y-You know, if you're c-c-c-c-c-cold then we could always…c-c-cuddle…"

Saito processed this for a moment as he was very confused as to why his wife was being shy about cuddling when they had already done much more. He smirked at her and yanked her over to him before pressing their bodies together in a hug.

"Feel better?" asked Saito, teasingly. Louise pouted for some reason, causing Saito to cock a brow in confusion. "What is-?"

"Partner!" shouted Derf, suddenly, causing Saito to tense and tightly grab Louise by the waist. He leapt out of the small building just before it was crushed by a metal golem.

"Shit, how did the mechs find us," said Saito as he pulled out Derf and jumped to his feet. He muttered out a chant and Derf's blade retracted into the hilt before a lightning blade took its place.

"Saito, should I use magic?" asked Louise as she pulled out her wand.

"Only if you can get a clear shot in. It's not gonna be easy to defeat him without it but I want to minimize the need since it would let the Dwarf king know that we're here," said Saito as he kept his eyes trained on the mech. The mech suddenly launched something from its hand and Saito's eyes widened before he spun around and launched Louise out of the way. The object hit Derf's electric blade as Saito tried to block it and it blew up.

"Saito!" shouted Louise after she had realized he had been blown up. The smoke cleared and she was relieved to see him with only some scratches and minor burns. Nothing Gwen can't heal, thought Louise.

"Louise, stand back," said Saito, Louise nodding and moving back while keeping her wand ready.

Saito moved into a battle stance before launching himself at the mech, his Gandalfr runes glowing brightly as he flew across the wet, stone bricks. The mech picked up a couple pieces of rock from the rubble and threw them at Saito, said familiar dodging them easily, before smashing the ground in front of him. Saito jumped on its arm, landing perfectly before slashing into the head of the mech, the lightning sword slowly cutting into the steel. As it was cutting, though, Saito had to leap off or risk getting hit by the other arm of the mech. He leapt some distance away and cussed when the mech pointed both its arms at him. They released a very powerful flamethrower, causing Saito to leap back several times, the mech slowly following him.

"Saito! Be careful! You're getting close to the cliff," shouted Louise, causing Saito to cuss again. He took a glance behind him and noticed the edge of the cliff, which was lined with bricks, was only a couple yards away. He began to move along the side and, as he did so, the mech seemed to run out of fuel for the flamethrowers. It then launched a couple more explosives to which Saito knocked off in the direction of the cliff. The explosions rattled the ground but Saito didn't have time to worry about it. He lunged at the mech once again, this time cutting into the metal of its legs, causing tremendous damage to them and slowing the mech.

The mech punched the ground again, forcing Saito to the side closer to the cliff and he clenched his teeth. The mech approached him and he somehow managed to parry a punch from the metal lug. He saw out of the corner of his eye that Louise was attempting to approach in order to assist him and he growled out.

"Stay away, Louise!" shouted Saito before piercing into the mech. Louise stopped and pointed her wand at them, hoping to find an opening to blow the mech off the cliff. The mech launched another explosive at Saito, this time to the dismay of both of them. Saito had managed to knock the explosive away, but the explosion shook the unable ground of the edge of the cliff and it began to cave in from the large combined weight of Saito and the mech.

"SAITO!" screamed Louise as she ran towards them. Saito stared wide-eyed at her as the ground collapsed under him and time seemed to slow down. He knew there wasn't a way to get out of this situation. He wasn't going to have enough time to use Vivlio to make something and Louise was too panicked to properly cast a World Door. All he could do was mouth out the final words he could say to her which were 'I love you'. After mouthing those words, and watching Louise's tears increase enough that you could tell even with all the rain, time seemed to resume at its normal speed and Saito fell, along with the mech, into the dark, dark pit.

I'm sorry if the beginning seemed a little awkward but I didn't really have a plan for it, only the end of the chapter.
