Wolf Bond - Part II - (AKA Wolf Bond Rekindled)

Moonlight coated the two speeding figures as if they'd been dabbed in mercury. The wind whistled eerily through the treetops, but to the two wolfbloods it might as well have been Night itself whispering welcome…be free! Maddy and Rhydian headed towards the tiny logging town of Coopston, which lay only about 40 km from Swan Hill, the Smith family's new home in Canada. They were going for reasons Maddy understood, reasons Maddy had forced Rhydian to reluctantly admit—for Rhydian to reconcile with his mum, Ceri, before it was too late.

Maddy's mischief-loving wolf turned even more rambunctious as they penetrated deep into the dark, primeval forest between the two towns. Human civilization might never have existed for all they could tell right now, as the two wolfbloods relished moving through the deeper shadows which hid them despite the moonlight. You may be stronger than me, but I'm faster Maddy thought. With a wolfy grin she threw a bark at Rhydian and sped up the pace. She could hear Rhydian's howl of protest as she leapt a fallen log and then jumped a gully, churning damp earth underneath her paws before flying, a she-wolf turned into a furry whirlwind not to be conquered.

Catch me if you can Maddy thought. And yet, the she-wolf inside of her almost wanted her mate to catch her. A delicious shiver shot through her despite the padding of her fur. Come on, Rhydian. Keep up! But she'd been too fast for him. She ran and ran until she smelled the familiar scents of human settlement. In this case Coopston—a town with the same population as Swan Hill, except much more spread out.

Maddy raced to the outskirts of town. She sped along a gravel road that led to the Gaines' compound, where Ceri was staying. The Gaines pack was the nearest pack to Swan Hill. Maddy's parents trusted them, as much as one could trust a pack that wasn't your own, anyway. Maddy catapulted over the last rise, tearing off down the slope towards a cluster of four cabins with a two-story lodge nestled in the center like the jewel in a crown. Mads thought fiercely, with a stab of triumph which she had to admit contained more than a little vindictive glee—I can't wait to see the look on Ceri's face when she finds out I'm going to stay with her and Rhydian for a few days.

But the thought died like a slaughtered animal, just that swift—because what she smelled next made Maddy skid to a halt, sniffing. Her hackles rose. Fear trickled through her primal brain as she growled. She let out a surprisingly deep rumble for such a slender wolf as her fur bristled. Then she saw it, the rusted pool of blood around a still figure crowned by a halo of moonlight. It was a wolfblood. She crept closer. Her eyes darted all over looking for the threat. Seeing none, she crept up to the body. Blood-scent filled her nose. The stench of death. Of a corpse still fresh. With a sinking feeling dragging her stomach past the nearest abyss, she knew that this young male was a member of the Gaines' pack. It had to be one of Garrick's sons.

She threw her head back to howl, to call out. Rhydian, where are you? Come quickly!

Behind her, a shadow exploded from the bushes—a shadow with gleaming fangs and eyes filled with death.

A/N - Hey wolfblood brothers and sisters! It has been a little while since I've posted and a longer while since I've worked on this story. I'm baaaack :) I hope you like this teaser opening chapter of Part II of Wolf Bond, also known as the sequel, which I'm calling "Wolf Bond Rekindled."

I will be updating this regularly, definitely once I return from my trip to England on March 10th. Most of the chapters will be up to my usual standard of length (1000-3000 words). Many things unresolved in the original Wolf Bond story willbe, I promise.

Feedback, comments, reviews would be like brilliant presents I promise to cherish. I have to admit, after leaving a story sitting for long enough, as a writer it can be hard to pick it back up. In prep for this sequel I re-watched one of my favorite WB episodes and went over the original Wolf Bond story, so I hope it shows :) :) A quick shout-out to hoofbeats127 for updating his/her story, A Wolf's Life, and helping inspire me to leap back into the fray writing more WB :)
