Roses' new mentor's POV
I was woken by a beeeep beeeep beeeep going off. I looked around and identified the noise, the alarm clock flashing on my bedside table. It read 5:35pm, this was not my normal time to get up. I groaned. I was about to go back to sleep when I remembered that I had to get up, to train a novice. God I don't even know there name accept that she's Janine's Hathaway daughter, this should be interesting.
Most of the teachers and guardian's that transferred here arrived over the last week. I didn't find out till yesterday morning that I was being transferred. Her file was given to me upon my arrival late last night but since I went straight to bed after my short tour of the school, I have yet to read it.
After about five more minutes I managed to drag myself up and get ready, by now it was 5:45pm. I had to be there at 6pm. I wonder why this Hathaway girl needs extra sessions for so close to trails and graduation. I grabbed my IPod and headphones and walked down out into the morning chill, the cold air woke me up.
I arrived at the gym at 6pm dead on. I looked around the gym for this girl but no one was here so I got out a mat and sat down to listen to my favourite playlist while I waited of her to turn up.
Roses POV
I was having a nice dream about what could have been when it got interrupted by my alarm clock again but I hit snooze. I let myself slip back to the arms of the man who loves me and never left me. I let my heart pretend, if only in my dreams. Ten more minutes the stupid thing went off again. I gazed at the time it was 5:40pm. I rolled over to get comfy and then shot up. I looked at the clock again 5:42pm, shit! I had less than twenty minutes to have a shower, change AND get down to the gym all before 6pm. I was going to be late!
I grabbed the towel off the floor and ran down the hall to the shower room, I got in at 5:45pm. I found myself cursing at myself that I didn't get up earlier and go for a shower, or better yet, take one last night. I admit to letting myself wallow a bit the last couple of days but there was no way I was letting anyone see me like this.
I scrubbed my body and hair, got out and ran back to my room with towel wrapped around me. I glanced at the clock 5:52pm, Shit. Eight minutes to get down there. I pulled on my black shorts and my grey long sleeve top, yanked my socks on and slipped on my runners. I looked at the clock again it flashed 5:58pm. Damn I'm not going to make it! I brushed my hair and pulled it up into a high pony tail, brushed my teeth, and grabbed my hoodie and my gym bag and sprinted down to the gym.
I pushed the doors open with a puff and looked at the clock it read 6:05pm. Damn I was late. I looked around and noticed someone sitting in the middle of the room. Staring at me. Shit, great impression Rose. I cursed in my head.
I dropped my bag on the bench and walked over.
"Hi, you're my new mentor I'm guessing. So what are we doing?" I asked trying to slow down my breathing. He didn't say anything. He just stood up pulled out his earphones, and put them away.
"Hi, yes I am your new mentor. Guardian Skyle," he stuck out his hand, I shook it, and I looked at him properly. He had black/brown short-ish hair gelled into place, dark brown eyes, about six-four and he had massive muscles. I wish that they would have let Alberta or Jean be my mentor. How was I supposed to behave like a normal Non-broken hearted girl around this guy?
"Rosemarie Hathaway, Rose," he smiled and he let go of my hand.
"Okay, so what did you used to do with Guardian Belikov?" he asked, I tried not to flinch when he said his name, he seemed to realise this because he frowned.
"I used to run laps and then spar, or use the dummies," I told him.
"Okay. Well you'll be doing twenty laps and then we'll see where you can go from there," I nodded. I noticed that he had a faint accent.
"Hey, where are you from?" I asked, curiosity getting the better of me.
"You noticed then?" he asked while smiling.
"Yeah I just can't place it," I answered truthfully,
"Hmm, well maybe if you can pin me. I'll tell you," I stopped and stared at him, gobsmacked, I wasn't going to able to do that. "Go on Rose. You've got laps to do," he said and then chuckled, and I couldn't help but stick my tongue out at him as I walked by. There was something, I don't know…familiar to our banter, kinda like Mason.
Oh god, this was going to be interesting I smiled at my thought.
I ran the twenty laps and walked in the gym. Guardian Skyle was lying on the floor listening to his IPod, with his eyes closed. The image of Dimitri laying in the same spot with a book passed through my mind. I had to do something to excise the memory and to hopefully discourage him from ever laying there like that again. I smirked as a plan formed. I walked over quietly got down on the floor, put my mouth right next to his ear and then blew in his ear. He yelped and jumped up, looking round but I was on my back laughing my ass off.
"Rose, that's not funny," he said while keeping a guardian mask on. Humph, well he's no fun.
"Actually for me it was," I replied as I got up. I looked at him, and he sighed, walked over to the wall for a drink and to place his earphones away. He stood there with his back to me for a minute, taking deep breathes before he walked back.
"So Rose, you ready to spar?" he asked. To be honest I didn't want to spar with him. Sparring with him or any other guardian felt wrong somehow. Sparring had always been one of the ways that Dimitri and I worked through our sexual tension. Well I guess if I want to keep my secrets I am going to have to pretend it doesn't hurt.
"As ever," I replied offhandedly looking at my hands, he frowned.
"Okay then," and he got into an attack stance. He decided on a kidney jab and a roundhouse kick that sent me staggering. I punched him in the stomach and knocked him back, we blocked and punched and kicked for what seemed like eternally. After he caught my foot in the air when I went to kick him, I felt as he pulled my leg towards him making me then I lose my footing and wobble. Guardian Skyle dropped my foot and sent a kick to the back of my wobbling leg and I staggered and felt myself falling and he pinned me with his body.
Shit, I lost.
He didn't hold me down like Dimitri or I used to when we were using it as a way to be close to one another. He jumped right up and offered me a hand.
"That was pretty good Rose. It seemed like Guardian Belikov taught you well," I sighed and looked down. "What's wrong Rose?" he asked.
"Nothing," I replied and looked up, he was frowning. "Hey, what's your fist name?" I asked his eyebrows creased.
"Xavier," he replied. "Now answer my question."
"Huh? What question?" I asked.
"What is wrong?" he repeated.
"Nothing," I replied again. "Are you going to tell me where you're from?" I asked trying to change subject. He frowned again, and then answered.
"Russia," he replied. Just great, another Russian.
"Wait. You don't sound Russian?" I was curious by now.
"Yeah, it's mixed with several American ones. Sometimes my Russian accent will pick up in some words I say, but some words are laced with Texan, or Pennsylvanian. My mom's Moroi was a business man and we travelled between the two states a lot. " he explained.
"Oh," I said.
"Come on help me pack the mats away," he told me. We got up to put the mats and equipment away. I left to shower and change for class. On my walk back down to get breakfast I met up with Eddie, Liss, Christian, and somewhat unfortunately Adrian.
"Hey guys," I said as I sat down with my breakfast. Eddie nodded, Christian mumbled something that sounded like a 'hey', and Adrian as always said 'hey little Dhampir.'
"Hey Rose, how was your training?" Liss asked.
"It was okay, nothing new just a new mentor." I replied.
"Oh, who is your new mentor?" she asked.
"His name is Xavier Skyle, he's Russian but he has an American/Texan accent sort of," I told her.
"Oh, well good luck." She smiled. I frowned but she laughed. Through the bond I could feel her hoping that this new mentor could help distract me from Dimitri. She wanted things… or… well, ME to go back to normal. I realized that she didn't fully comprehend the depth of my feelings for him. If she couldn't understand the depth of my love then she would never understand why I feel so betrayed and abandoned. I spent all of breakfast trying to laugh and pretend to be my old self.
"Well let's go to class," Eddie piped up. Great Stan's class.
"Okay, lead me to the gallows." I said holding my hands together, I stood up and walked with Eddie to Stan's class. I admit to no one that I must not have paid any attention to my surroundings as we walked. I felt like I blinked and we were already inside and heading to our seats.
We sat down and waited for the class to begin. Class started but I was zoning out, "Rose, pay attention!" Stan shouted at me. His voice was grating on my nerves making me feel like fleeing, but not before knocking him out just to shut him up
"Yes, Stanny Boy," I mumbled..
"What did you say Hathaway?" he shouted at me.
"God, I can hear you," I snapped. I swear, I feel like I have even less patience for him than ever.
"Hathaway!" Stan shouted.
"Yes. I know I'm on my way," I said, as I gathered up my stuff and walked out, slamming the door in the process for good measure. I had promised myself I would buckle down so the Council will take me seriously for Lissa's Guardian. Try as I might I couldn't get a handle of my emotions.
I walked around instead of going to go to see Kirova. I learned a long time ago that Stan Alto is too lazy to call notify her when he kicks me out of class. If I don't show up than she is none the wiser. I was walking around outside the yard when I heard something I looked behind me and Xavier was standing there.
"Rose, what are you doing out of class?" He had the don't lie to me face perfected, not that it worked on me but I could see it working on others. I figured that it would be best to tell him the truth because I felt like he genuinely cared.
"I got kicked out of Stan's class again." I told him.
"Who?" he asked confused.
"Guardian Alto," I explained.
"Oh what did you do?"
"Nothing really!" he raised his eye brows in disbelief. "I wasn't paying attention, and then he snapped and I snapped, and he told me to get out, the usual." He shook his head. A look of concern crossed his face.
"Rose..."
"I know, I know. If I don't pass, then I won't be able to become a guardian and protect Lissa," I told him.
"Okay, come on. We'll do a bit of training," he said grabbing hold of my hand pulling me to my dorm. "Go and get changed," he told me, as we walked up to my room, while he waited outside I got change into track pants, hoodie, and my runners again. I put a change of clothes in a bag for later. I walked out, and he was still leaning against my wall.
"What are we doing?" I asked.
"It's what you're doing," he corrected me, I groaned.
