'C' is for Classes
Ruby sighed as she listened to Professor Port ramble on and on about his adventures as a hunter, normally, she would have been paying more attention, but today he was just talking about his hikes and travels. There was a time in her life that she wanted to travel the world, but that was a long time ago, before she really understood what it meant to travel without and the pain of leaving unprepared.
The girl closed her eyes tightly before opening them again. Her mind had a horrible habit of wondering off like that and scrunching her eyes closed was a great way of breaking it's spell. She had to at least look like she was listening to the man, she was in class after all. Now that she thought about it...her classes and the classes the rest of her team had were very different from one another.
Blake had a lot of stealth classes while Yang had a lot of combat classes, Weiss had a lot of dust and aura classes and she had a lot of semblance training and weapon classes. How did they get split up like this? Did the teachers base this all on their performance in the Emerald Forest?
Ruby gave out a sigh as she tapped her finger nail against the wood of her desk, now that she was really thinking about it, their schedules were so out of sorts with one another that they didn't share basic classes at the same time, since some teachers weren't always present all the time. In fact, they didn't even have classes on certain days. It was a lot to keep track of, that was for sure.
It made getting up and moving around the dorm room a little difficult, especially if you were the only one that had classes that day. She could remember the one time she tripped over Yang's boots and woke everyone up...that wasn't pretty. She couldn't fault anyone for being grumpy, she could be mean too if she was startled awake, but she still didn't think having everyone throw their pillows at her was a proper way to convey their anger...
... Yang threw hers really hard too...
"Miss Rose!" Professor Port announced as he stepped closer to the startled girl. "You seem to be lost in thought, care to share it with the class?" Normally, a student could just stutter a 'no thank you' and be off the hook, however Professor Port was different. He expected you to share and if you didn't, you would then be subjected to everyone guessing what it was you were thinking about.
Think Ruby! CrapcrapcrapcrapCRAP! "Uh...well...I was just thinking...about traveling, Sir...and how our classes could help or hinder us?" It wasn't a lie...but it wasn't the truth either.
Professor Port quirked an eyebrow before he chuckled. "Oh? Why not tell us about your thoughts then!"
Awww, man. Now I gotta run with it. "Well...I mean...we all have very different classes, so that means we learn different things..." Ruby then scratched her cheek in hopes that the professor would drop it, but seeing him gain interest in her sent her hopes against the craggy rocks of Despair. "So, wouldn't that hurt us in some way? I mean, what if someone was sent on a mission and had to know how to work dust really awesome like, but never had the classes to teach them to do so?"
"Excellent point, Miss Rose! Seems like you were paying attention after all! In fact, you took the lesson a step higher!" He cheered in his normally merry tone, missing the relieved sigh escaping the young girl's lips. "We have everyone in different classes that expand and fine tune their natural abilities for all four years, however, once you enter your third year, we begin to branch you all out to many different classes! So, for instance, you have many classes that expand your knowledge of semblance and its uses. This is because we teachers know that you use this while fighting, now, once you enter your third year we'll start teaching you about...well...something else!" The man chuckled as he turned his back on the class. " It depends on what other traits you develop along the way, Miss Rose."
Shortly after, the bell rang and students began to rush out of the classroom like a mad herd of cattle. Ruby was usually the first out and the first in, but after having to talk in class today tired her out.
Ruby sighed as she slung her bag over her shoulder and entered the hall, surprised to see her friends there waiting for her. Yang was the first to move, stepping closer and slinging her arm around the little sister's shoulders.
"Man, you clutched that." She laughed as the younger blushed. "I taught you well, Young Grasshopper!"
"I think your supposed to tell her to stay on task, Yang." Blake pointed out as she glanced up from her novel.
"What the Hell were you thinking?! Spacing out like that?! You could have gotten into serious trouble!" Weiss huffed as she drove her finger into Ruby's chest, but then took a step back and closed her eyes. "However, you were able to think on your feet and provide a good cover story. So I can let this one slide...for now."
"What were you thinking about anyway?" Jaune asked as the group started making their way to more classes.
"I really was thinking about our different classes." Ruby mumbled as Yang laughed. "What's so funny?"
"You weren't thinking about cookies or sweets or anything like that?" Yang asked as she lifted the other onto her shoulders, moving her hair out of the way before doing so.
"No! I'm not some little kid, you know!" Ruby whined as she lightly pounded her fist on the top of her sister's head.
"Said the girl having a piggyback ride." Blake snickered.
"Well, I give you an 'A' for effort and a 'C' for creativity then!" Yang smiled as she adjusted the small girl.
"Miss Xiao Long, please put Miss Rose down." Professor Goodwitch sighed as she spotted the siblings. "You are scaring the other students."
"Huh? Scaring them? How come?" Yang asked, her grip on her sister never loosening.
"Gee, I don't know, maybe it could be they're having flashbacks to when you two were running down the hall and Ruby was waving her scythe around like it was a giant toy." Weiss hissed at the pair.
"We were just trying to scare that bat away!" Ruby mumbled as she hid her face in her sister's locks before giving the glaring teacher a set of puppy dog eyes. "We're sorry. We won't do it again."
Everyone watched as the stern woman merely continued to glare at the two sisters before sighing and looking down at her clip board, then back up at the pair. "As...cute as your eyes are, Miss Rose, I am afraid that I must ask you to get down."
"WHA-?! You didn't crack under those puppy dog eyes?!" Yang gasped. "You gotta teach me how you do that!"
"I'm afraid I can't give my secrets away so easily, Miss Xiao Long." goodwitch only smirked as she watched the girls follow her command before walking off, knowing full well that as soon as she rounded the corner, those two would be at it again. She wasn't paid enough for this, but some days...she didn't care.
"That teach is really somethin'." Yang sighed as she placed a hand on her hips and patted Ruby's shoulders. "You gotta work those eyes extra hard on her, baby sis."
"Again, I think you should be telling her to not use her powers for evil." Blake sighed as she closed her book. "Now, let's get to class and stay on task."
Ruby gave off a nervous chuckle as she scratched her cheek. "I'll try to keep that in mind." The young leader went to go rush off before a hand grabbed her wrist and whirled her back around. She blinked as she now stared into the icy globs of Weiss' eyes. "Huh?"
"Don't 'try', 'do'. If I catch you daydreaming, I'll make sure to hide your stupid weapon mags for a week."
"WHA-?! No fair! You don't threaten Yang when she goofs off!" Ruby pouted.
"She's not my partner, now get to class." Weiss huffed as she began to walk off, but stopped shortly and called out to the other girl. "Ruby!" when she gained her attention yet again, she gave her a smirk. "You know what they say about classes, don't you?"
Ruby blinked, trying to figure out where the other girl was going with this. Was it because she zoned out today? "No. What?"
"They saw it's all garage until it's on a test...which is what you'll be taking in the class coming up." She chuckled at the younger's gulp. "So, I hope you paid attention and remember that the answer is usually 'C'."
Ruby nodded before running off, a single thought coursing through her. Did Weiss just give her an easy 'A'?
