The moon is bright, but the ground is rough and it's slow going. We'd probably be able to walk faster than this, I think, but that would require leaving Fernando behind. The thought cheers me up a little for awhile.

By the time we reach the tracks, I'm having trouble keeping my eyes open. I pause and let Inez pull up next to me.

"Let's find a good place to rest for a couple of hours," I say. "It's going to take us awhile to get all the way back in these things."

"Can you go a little further?" Tris asks, leaning around Inez to see me. "Because the cart still has about half its charge, and it looks like they'll recharge in the sunlight. So if we rest once the sun comes up, we won't have to stop again as soon."

I nod, rubbing the back of neck. "Yeah, sure."

"Tris, why don't you go ride with Toby - he looks like hell. You can help him stay awake."

"I'm fine," I snap.

They both just look at me.

"Okay," I sigh, "whatever." They're still just looking at me, and I take a deep breath. "You know, I was just thinking, and it would be great, no fabulous, if my girlfriend could ride with me. You don't mind, do you, Inez?"

"Why no, Toby," she responds with an airy wave of her hand, "be my guest."

Tris chuckles and hops out of the cart, crossing around the back and checking on Fernando before she climbs in next to me.

I can tell she's watching me as we get underway, Inez in the lead this time.

"What?" I snap.

"Toby?" she asks.

"She just calls me that to bug me," I grump.

I can tell Tris is smiling, though I keep my eyes on Inez's cart and the ground in front of us.

"It appears to be working," she observes. "Toby, huh?"

"Don't you dare start calling me that," I snarl.

"Wouldn't dream of it," she says solemnly, and reaches out, running her hand up my arm, and then resting it on my thigh.

That definitely wakes me up.

I lift her hand up and press it to my lips. "Sorry," I murmur, putting her hand back on my thigh and covering it with my own. She turns her palm up and laces her fingers into mine, squeezing my hand.

We ride, crawling along, until a pink smudge of sunrise begins to show on the horizon. Inez leads us a little ways away from the tracks, so we can still see them but not be seen from the trains that go groaning and rumbling through every few hours.

Eventually, we find a house that still has most of the walls standing, and we're able to hide the carts inside. There's no roof, so when the sun comes all the way up, the panels should get enough light to recharge. If they still work.

"I'll take first watch," Inez announces. Tris and I both start to protest, and Inez just holds up a hand with a bark of laughter. "I slept most of the time you were in the station and wasn't gassed." She walks out, shaking her head, muttering "stupid Abnegation," under her breath, but loudly enough for us to hear.

Tris just snorts and goes to get her pack out of the cart, grabbing mine, too. We get out sleeping bags and some hard, cracker-like bread and dried fruit. We make a little camp against one of the walls, and eat in silence.

I reach into my jacket pocket and pick out the black journal, holding it out to Tris. "Why don't you take this," I say. "I'll keep the card, just so they're separate." Tris nods.

"I don't think we should tell anyone about it," Tris says, her brow furrowed. "Inez saw us using them both, though, so I guess we'll have to tell her about it."

"She probably won't ask if we don't bring it up."

"Yeah, but she did see it, so she'll think we don't trust her, and that has a way of being a self-fulfilling prophecy," Tris notes pointedly.

I nod, giving her a slight scowl. "Okay, but no one else. Especially not Fernando," I say.

"Agreed."

"What else did you find?"

"Well, some kind of tiny computer, among other things," Tris responds, yawning. "But I think we'd better look at them later and get some sleep now." I nod, yawning along with her.

We roll out the sleeping bags in the flattest spot we can find and I fall asleep with her, bag and all, in my arms.

It seems like just minutes later that Inez is nudging me with her boot. "Okay, lovers," she says, "time to get up."

"Don't you want some sleep?" I ask, rubbing my eyes and stretching my arms out over my head.

"Nah. I'm good. We should go, though." I squint up at the anxious note in her voice, and I realize it's already afternoon.

"You let us sleep too long." I say accusingly, but she just shrugs.

"I'll drive this time," Tris offers, getting to her feet.

"Okay," Inez agrees.

We pass around a canteen of water and retrieve some food from the packs. We eat in silence for a moment, and I'm surprised Inez doesn't ask us anything about what we found.

"It was full of monitors," I say suddenly. "They were watching everything." Inez nods, eying me expectantly. "But there wasn't much else there - we took a few things. A lot more in the utility room."

"There was a body in there, though," Tris adds. "He'd been dead for a long time, but he still had some kind of badge pinned onto his chest," I hold it out to her, and she takes it from me and looks at it closely. "That's how we got out. I found his journal, the dead guy's, and he had the passcodes in it."

Inez says nothing, remaining expressionless, but I can tell she's pleased we're telling her. There's a little color in her cheeks, and when she looks up, her eyes are shining.

"Don't tell anyone else," she says softly, and Tris and I nod. "We should go," she adds, handing me back the card. "We can talk more about it later."

Fernando is still unconscious, but his pulse is strong and regular.

"Wonder how long he'll be out?" Inez asks, squinting at him.

"What was the longest Linus said the gas knocked him out for?" Tris asks, putting her pack in the back of the cart.

"Three or four days," I answer, putting mine in the passenger side of my cart.

"Well," Tris speculates, "'he got a pretty good lungful. I'd say four days, then."

Checking the gauge, I grunt with satisfaction. Fully recharged. The panels not only work, they're better than anything I've seen before. Indeed, it's enough to get us all the way back, as we drive through the afternoon and well into the night.

They obviously set up a watch in our absence, as we discussed, I note with satisfaction. Rat and one of the Candor meet us out front, both with guns drawn.

"Oh, it's you," Rat says, with evident relief. "We were beginning to think we'd lost you. Cara will be relieved," he smiles as he looks at the carts. "And you found wheels! Excellent!"

I grunt in acknowledgment. "We'll find a place to put them tomorrow," I say yawning. "How was your mission? Everything go alright?"

Rat waves his gun vaguely in the air. "Fine. No problems. The recruiting probably could have gone better - only three more, and one of them wasn't even on Linus's list, but Cara said she knew him. I wouldn't let Cara stay any longer, though. Odds of discovery go up the longer you're there." I nod at him approvingly.

"Did you get the supplies?"

Rat grins evilly. "Oh, yes. Not only medicine, but serum. Cara knew where the manufacturing facility was, so we broke in and took a bunch."

"What kind?" Tris asks sharply.

"All kinds," he adds, practically crowing. Then he pats me on the shoulder and gives Inez a kiss on the cheek and Tris a hug.

"Glad to have you back," he repeats. "I have to stay on watch with Mary," he gestures to the Candor with him, "but you should go find Cara. She's probably with Jose - Laila, too." He grips Inez's shoulder. "I'll let Cara tell you more, but he's going to be okay, Inez. He's going to be okay."

Inez nods, her face crumbling slowly. Rat holds her for a moment while she shakes with silent sobs. I just stand there, feeling like an intruder and shifting from foot to foot. I can't hide that it makes me uncomfortable, seeing her like that.

"Why don't you go on ahead and get Laila," Rat says gently. "Mary, I'll meet you back in the tower."

I pat Inez on the back awkwardly and Tris whispers something in her ear. Then we turn to walk away, but Rat calls out after us.

"Oh, Tris, I almost forgot," he says. "One of the new Erudite says he knows you. Jacob, maybe?"

Tris just looks at him in confusion, and then realization steals over her features.

"Was it Caleb?" She asks, voice husky.

"Yes, that's it. Caleb." Rat responds, smiling at Tris before turning his attention back to Inez.

Tris stands frozen to the spot for a moment, and then shakes her head. "Let's go find Cara," she whispers, without looking at me.
