"But Professor-"

"No, Mr. Potter. It is late and I am not interested in hearing whatever poorly conceived explanation or excuse you've prepared this time." Professor Mcgonagall said sternly

"No, it's a good one this time!" Sirius said

"Mr. Black, I cannot think of any good reason for the four of you to be out of bed after hours-"

"But we weren't technically out of bed!" James interjected

Mcgonagall huffed in frustration, "No but'"

"And the rules specifically state 'No students are permitted to be out of bed after curfew'. I checked with Remus and he said it would work." Sirius continued for James, as Remus lowered his head in embarrassment.

"While that may technically be true," Mcgonagall conceded, "It is implied that no students are allowed out of their common rooms. If they cannot leave their beds, they cannot leave their common rooms."

"But if you look at the exact words, not their implied meaning, then you can't give us detention because we never actually broke the rules." James said triumphantly

"Fine, but that still doesn't explain what on earth you were doing levitating your beds around the castle in the middle of the night!" Mcgonagall exclaimed

"We wanted to see if we could get out of detention." Peter squeaked

Mcgonagall froze, "Let me get this straight," she said, her voice dangerously quiet, "the four of you somehow removed your beds from the common room, levitated them, then raced them around the castle, waking both Mr. Filch and I up in the process, just to see if you could get out of detention for it?"

"Yep!" James and Sirius said together, as Peter and Remus grinned sheepishly.

The fearsome professor glared at them for a moment before leaning back in her chair, a ghost of a smile fighting through her pursed lips, "Seeing as no rules were officially broken tonight, I will let the four of you go, but I will personally see to it that this loophole is fixed and a copy of the rules is delivered to each of you. Now unless you have any other rules you would like to discuss with me, I suggest you return yourselves and your beds to the Gryffindor common room."

"YES!" James exclaimed, as the four boys celebrated their victory before running to and mounting their still levitating beds, flying them back to the Gryffindor Tower, whooping and hollering the whole way.

Professor Mcgonagall waited a moment to be sure they were gone before lowering her head into her hands, closing her eyes and taking deep breathes, "Just two more years." She muttered, "Just two more years."
