Chapter 13: The Aftermath of the Mountain Arc

"Thank you Genichiro," Yukimura Seiichi said and whished Sanada a good night.

Sanada watched as Seiichi and the others left the movie theatre. The sky was now dark and he hadn't asked his older brother to pick him up as he had originally planned. Great. At least he could jog. It would be work out.

His lack of transport wasn't his only small problem. He was now broke. Every last yen had been used on movie tickets for his team, on his best friend's request. That was one of the reasons he had left Jackal to pick up stones at the courts back at school. He didn't have enough money to pay for another ticket, also asking Jackal to pay for his own ticket while he paid for the others would seem really rude. It was a chance he was not willing to take.

The phone in his pocket buzzed. Thanks to a lot of secret practice, he could flip it open in one easy swing, so yeah it was a flip phone, but his other one was broken. It was a message from Tezuka. He scowled. That was weird. That bastard never texted him. It was always him texting Tezuka. Some might call his texting for spamming, but sending TEZUKA many times in a row was not spamming.

There is some wrong information in the manual you sent with us. Please look over the paragraph I have marked with a yellow pencil at page 22.

Sanada reread the text and considered sending 'thank you'. He sent 'TEZUKA'. Five times for extra measure. You never knew what could happen to your texts. They could disappear into outer space. The satellites were not to be trusted.

"Fukubucho!" A very familiar voice shouted from down the road. He turned towards the voice and saw Jackal and Akaya.

Akaya was running towards him.

Sanada lifted up his right hand.

Akaya stopped, looked Sanada up and down, then walked slower towards the taller boy.

"TARUNDORU! Aren't you supposed to be with Seigaku?" Sanada asked confused. "What are you doing here so early?"

Jackal followed after but had to stop a couple of times to catch his breath. "They just came driving up to the school in a strange minivan and dropped him off," he said in between breaths.

Sanada raised an eyebrow when he noticed Jackal's shoulder. "What happened to your shoulder?" On his shoulder was a wet spot.

Akaya turned to look up at Jackal. Jackal looked from Akaya to Sanada. "It started raining," he answered awkwardly.

"Sure," the vice captain said nodding. "Thank you for dropping him off here."

"No problem," Jackal said smiling, thankful for being useful.

"Now, why are you back so early?" Sanada asked Akaya who yawned tiredly. Which would have melted Sanada's heart of his heart hadn't been made of steel.

Akaya looked down at his feet and sniffed. "Uh… it's kind of confusing fukubucho…" He kicked the a stone on the ground. "And a long story." He nodded his head towards Jackal.

"Leave Jackal," Sanada said.

"What? Why? I mean of course. Good night," Jackal said and turned to leave trying to hide his sadness. Brining back Akaya wasn't enough to make fukubucho happy and stop considering kicking him off the team.

Something that wasn't on Sanada's mind at all, but Jackal had no idea.

"Can we walk home, I mean back to your house?" Akaya mumbled quietly.

Sanada agreed and turned to walk towards home with Akaya beside him.

"Well, you see…" The boy started. "I was lost in the woods. Then this white haired gel man found me. Apparently he is a friend of the sushi guy. Anyways. White hair biked up on the mountain because he wanted to jog up there.

But he got a text from some guy that there was an armed robber up there. So he decided to get sushi and not anyone else because he's an ass- very good friend.

Okay, so after that he found me. He and sushi took me back to the lodge. He told us that Atobe monkey was lost and an armed robber was up there.

Then creepy-glasses-guy said he had put up traps instead on focusing on my antidote. Uh, also white hair biked down to the closer gas station and got us a minivan which Ryuzaki lent for money."

Sanada nodded. "That makes sense?"

"The minivan was very mini, so I thought I was going to die because of the lack of air and sunlight!" Akaya explained waving his hands up in the air.

Sasuke looked up from the shounen jump issue he had in his hands. "Oji-san, annoyingly little kid," he greeted the pair walking towards him. He was sitting out on the porch.

"SASUKE, stop calling me that!" Sanada replied annoyed.

Sasuke ignored him. "You're late home. Like, really late. I almost thought you were dead or something. I mean, in your age and walking outside alone, anything could've happened."

Akaya bit back a loud laugh that was bubbling in his throat. He had missed this.

Toshiyuki was in the kitchen when they came in. He looked tired and very sweaty in his kendo uniform. His hand was in a cereal-box. He grabbed some with his hand and ate it. "I'm a cereal-killer. Get it?" he asked chuckling at his own joke. "How was the movie- oh Toto-chan," he said when he noticed Akaya.

Akaya winced. "Uh… I want to go to bed," he said while silently praying to whomever that the guy would leave him alone and let him go to bed. Not that he actually wanted to go to bed. But, saying so was an easy way to get out of this situation.

"Let me help you," Toshiyuki said. Akaya stared up at the guy. He felt like saying 'no, what the hell man, I'm a teen not some boring child that can't handle himself.' Then again, he could not reach up to his toothbrush which was on the counter in the bathroom.

Toshiyuki grabbed Akaya's hand and dragged him towards the bathroom.

"If I died right now. I wouldn't mind," Marui said with closed eyes. He bit into the delicious cupcake. "This is so good~. The best thing I've eaten today."

"You said the same thing about the other three, puri," Niou said looking over at his red haired friend.

It was time for the morning training because apparently weekends didn't mean 'you get a day off like the rest of the world.' Neither Sanada nor Yukimura had showed up yet, and it was almost six in the morning.

"They keep getting better and better not-genius," Marui replied and grabbed another cupcake from his Jackal-money bought box.

"You won't say that in approximately 2 minutes and 25 second," Yanagi said hitting a tennis ball with racket. On the other side of the net Yagyu sent another ball flying.

"Are you doubting my genius?" Marui asked annoyed back. He felt his stomach shout at him. Yanagi had been almost right. He started to feel kind of sick. Not that he would admit it.

Yanagi didn't answer. He just smiled. What the hell?

"Niou, Marui, why aren't you training? 500 swings!" Sanada shouted from the tennis court entrance, beside him stood Yukimura and Akaya, who was grinning wide.

Niou and Marui stared at the trio. First of all. Why was Akaya there? Second of all, Sanada had nothing on them. The trio was late!

"Fukubucho, you're late," Niou responded. "Puri."

Yukimura chuckled and it seemed to get colder on the court. "You were simply early," he said, totally ignoring that he was late. "A captain is never late, and do as Genichiro said."

Sanada looked around and when he saw Jackal, waved him to him. The half-Brazilian boy ran up to him. Then he noticed the manual in Sanada's hand.

"What's wrong?" He asked worriedly. "If you want to kick me off the team, please don't."

Sanada stared at him as if he was stupid. "What... I'm not kicking you off the team. Why would you think that?"

"Nothing," Jackal explained wide eyed and happier than ever. "What's wrong with… the manual?"

Sanada flipped the pages in the manual until he was at page 22. As Tezuka had told him there was a small paragraph with a yellow circle surrounding it. "It is written here ... something wrong."

Jackal studied the page. "Oh, I've been thinking of fixing that but forgot about it." He took the manual. After Niou had showed him the zombie film Akaya had been scared of any story about anything supernatural or zombie-ish. The manual was really outdated.

What was in the circle was:

Kirihara loves ghost stories and other stories about the supernatural. Telling him these will put him right to sleep.
