Forget your troubles and just get happy

You better chase all your cares away

Sing Hallelujah, come on, get happy

Get ready for the Judgment Day

The sun is shining, come on, get happy

The Lord is waiting to take your hand

Shout Hallelujah, come on, get happy

We're going to the promised land

We're heading 'cross the river

Wash your sins 'way in the tide

It's all so peaceful on the other side

-"Get Happy" by Frank Sinatra

Santa Barbara: 2019

"Keep the sweater to your side Shawn, press harder to stop the blood." Juliet instructed as she turned the corner of the road. Shawn rolled his eyes but applied more pressure to the red cloth that used to be a grey sweater. The bleeding wasn't heavy anymore but Juliet didn't want to take a chance and yelled at him every time he removed the cloth or loosened his grip.

"It stopped." Shawn looked down at his side and slowly took away the sweater. His side, shirt and pants were covered in blood, but the blood over the wound had started to harden. "See?" He turned so she could get a good look.

She glanced at him before looking back at the road "That's disgusting Shawn. Cover it back up." Her nose crinkled and Shawn couldn't help but smile. He thought she was absolutely adorable when she made that face. "Juliet?" Shawn looked out the window.

"What?"

"Did you and Declan do anything that night? You know when you…" Shawn trailed off.

"Are you asking if Declan and I slept together or kissed? Because we didn't Shawn. I was angry with you but not angry enough to cheat on you." Juliet responded.

"I feel like I should hate you." Shawn confessed.

"What?" Juliet asked in shock.

"You ruined my life. I was kicked out of the city because of you. Hell, Gus and I haven't talked in years. I have no idea how he's doing, I lost everything I had made for myself here." Shawn explained.

Juliet took a slow deep breath before saying, "I'm sorry."

"But I don't. I don't hate you." Shawn shook his head and looked back at her, "If you hadn't have done that I wouldn't have left. I wouldn't have left the city and I wouldn't have gotten Zuri. I got my little girl because of you, and for that I could never hate you." Shawn reached over and put a hand on her arm.

"Wow, I, I don't know what to say Shawn." Juliet started up the car as the light turned green.

"Just say you're welcome." Shawn suggested removing his hand. "Do you know where we're going?" Shawn asked after a few minutes.

"Damn." Juliet reached into the console next to her and fished out her phone. "Carlton?"

Shawn turned away from the conversation and leaned his head against the door and the seat. His eyes had suddenly become very heavy so he shut them as Juliet talked away on her phone. The buzz from the engine and the steady movements of the car began to soothe Shawn into a light snooze. He could still feel the car moving, and Juliet's voice as she spoke, but his mind wasn't registering anything. It was all a big blank slate.

"Shawn? Shawn?" he felt an arm on his shoulder.

"Hmm?" Shawn moaned not opening his eyes. Juliet felt bad for waking him up because he surely needed the rest, but they were at the scene with paramedics ready to attend to Shawn. Juliet stepped out of the car and crossed the pavement gently opening Shawn's door and helping him out.

"Jesus what happened to you?" Carlton barked with his hands on his hips and his face pinched.

"Declan." Shawn said. Carlton opened his mouth to speak but shut it after Juliet shot him a glare. With her arm around his waist Juliet was able to help Shawn sit down where the paramedic instructed him to. Shawn looked past Carlton and his eyes met the crystal greenish-blue water of the beach. The sun was shining without a cloud in sight. A car was flipped upside down where the water met the sand. Shawn could see an arm peeking out from the broken driver's window.

"What happened?" Shawn asked raising his arms so the paramedic could see his side.

"Sixteen year old female drove from the road there," Carlton pointed up at the streets, "Crashed through this wall," He pointed at a smashed grey wall, "Before flipping over this bon pit and rolling into the shore-line." Carlton's hand fell not needing to point out the car.

"Was she drugged?" Juliet took a file from Carlton and flipped it open.

"I believe so, but we won't know for certain until Woody does the autopsy." Carlton told her.

"ID?" Shawn looked at the file in Juliet's hands.

"Carter Fisher, she just got her license last week." Juliet sighed handing Shawn a picture of the girl. She had long brown hair going past her waist and cloudy grey eyes. "Have you talked to her family yet?" Shawn handed the picture back to Juliet.

"No, but we can go after we leave here- I mean if you want." Juliet finally turned to look at Shawn.

"Yeah, I'll go with you." Shawn nodded.

"You're fine sir." The paramedic said as he smoothed down a white bandage.

"He pulled his stitches." Juliet put a hand on Shawn's shoulder.

The paramedic shook his head, "It just seemed like it ma'am. However you did hurt yourself, you just disturbed the stitches which caused the bleeding. You'll be just fine." The paramedic packed up his bag and left around the truck.

"Good. Come take a look." Carlton turned and walked onto the beach. Shawn stood up and Juliet wrapped her arm around his waist to help steady him. "I'm alright." Shawn waved off her arm.

"You're sure?"

"Yeah." Juliet said nothing else but followed the chief down to the car.

"Shouldn't we get the body out of the water?" Shawn asked.

Carton sighed, "We haven't gotten pictures yet because some idiots can't handle a freaking camera!" Carlton yelled at a crime tech who ran over and began snapping pictures.

"Was she alone?" Shawn looked over the car.

"Do you see another body?" Carlton snapped.

"Lassiter what are you doing here? Vick never came to the scenes unless absolutely necessary." Shawn pointed out.

"I run things differently Spencer." Carlton turned to face him.

"Juliet is more than capable of running a crime scene." Shawn looked down at the car and walked in a circle around it. "The car doesn't seem tampered with." Shawn announced.

"If the girl was drugged, that's all the killer had to do. She's driving down the road, blacks out and the car continues forward onto the beach." Juliet said moving to the driver's window. She squatted down and snapped on two blue gloves over her hands. She reached inside and pulled out an empty bottle of Tequila.

"Think this could've been what delivered the drugs to her system?" Juliet showed the boys the bottle before dropping it into a bag.

"It doesn't make any sense." Shawn folded his arms, "Alcohol and drugs are a lethal combination. That's what killed the other teenagers."

"Where are they getting the alcohol anyways? They can't buy it." Juliet looked at Carlton.

"Probably from the killer himself." Shawn answered. "He meets them, gives them alcohol laced with drugs and sends them off. A few minutes later they die on the road."

"Sneaky bastard. O'Hara I'm heading back to the station, call me before you get to the victims house." Carlton turned on his heel and walked through the sand.

"Got it chief." Juliet said waiting until he left before she spoke again, "What do you know about underage drinking in Santa Barbara?" She asked standing next to Shawn.

"What makes you think I know something?"

Juliet folded her arms, "When we were dating you told me a supplier used to give alcohol to your classmates. You said you'd bought some off him before." Juliet said looking in the same direction as Shawn.

"All I know is he used to get it from some guy. He would bring it to parties or sell it in his van after school. I met the seller, but not the supplier." Shawn explained.

"Do you remember the seller's name?" Juliet asked taking out a pen and a piece of paper. Shawn closed his eyes and calmed his breathing down.

After a few seconds he opened his eyes, "Marshall Turner."

"I'll have Buzz run him by the system. You still want to join me to the victim's house?" Juliet wrote down a few things on the paper.

"Yeah. I'll just call my dad and let him know what's going on." They turned and began to walk over to Juliet's car.

"Don't forget to tell your dad about his truck." Shawn nodded and pulled out his phone once he was buckled into the seat. His dad answered on the first ring.

"Shawn, where the hell are you? You were supposed to be back almost an hour ago." Henry yelled.

"Calm down dad! I was at the diner with Juliet when she got called down to another scene and I went with her." Shawn said purposely not telling his father about Declan, it would've only made him angrier.

"Oh." Henry's voice dropped.

"I left your truck there. We had a little accident in the diner and we thought I'd pulled my stitches, which I didn't, but Juliet didn't want me driving." Shawn saw Juliet try not to look at him from the corner of his eye. Juliet was driving the car but her neck would twitch as she forced herself not to look at him.

Shawn heard his father sigh, "Alright. As long as you're safe I suppose…"

"Yeah." Shawn said.

"Okay, I'll go and pick up my truck and… Zuri wants to speak with you." Henry told him.

"Put her on." Shawn nodded.

Shawn heard silence but a few seconds later, "Daddy?" Zuri's voice spoke.

"What's up?" Shawn asked looking out the window.

"When are you coming home?" She asked.

"In a few hours, but I'll be home in time to read you a story." Shawn promised.

"Okay daddy." Shawn heard as Zuri let go of the phone and handed it to someone else. "Just be careful, okay kid?" His dad spoke.

"Got it dad." Shawn took the phone away from his ear and hung up.

"Was he mad?"

"No." Shawn shook his head and pocketed his phone.

"That's good; we don't need an angry father- your father bursting down doors to find you." Juliet smiled and Shawn chuckled.

"He's very protective." Shawn grew a smile of his own and looked at Juliet.

"Are you protective of your daughter?" Juliet asked casually.

"As much as a parent can be. She's a smart kid, just whiny and kind of… absent minded." Shawn used his thumb to swipe his chin and scratch it lightly.

"So she's you?" Juliet glanced at Shawn.

Shawn shrugged, "I guess you could say that." Juliet nodded. The ride turned into a quiet bliss and Shawn found himself not turning to his thoughts for once. He was looking out the window as they passed trees, cars and houses. Shawn looked up at the sky and smiled at the clear sun.

"This is it…" Juliet slowed down and pulled to a stop in front of quaint house. The outside was red with a white trim and yellow pansies growing from the window panes. The grass was perfectly healthy and covered the whole lawn except for a single path of stone which led to the door. A white gate surrounded the property. "It looks nice." Juliet said looking at the house.

"If you say so." Juliet sighed before stepping out of the car with Shawn behind her. Shawn followed in second as Juliet opened the white gate and walked up to the door. She tapped her fist against the white door and stepped back.

"May I help you?" The door opened slightly and a woman's head peeked out from behind the door.

"Hello," Juliet smiled and held out her badge, "My name is Juliet O'Hara and I'm head detective with the Santa Barbara police department, I'm looking for the parents of Carter Fisher."

"I'm her mother. What's the matter officer?" The woman asked.

"I have some bad news regarding your daughter…" As soon as Juliet finished her sentence the white door was opened loudly causing both Shawn and Juliet to step back. "Have you found her? Is she alright?" She ushered them both into the house and locked the door behind Shawn as he entered. Shawn noticed how neat and tidy the room was kept. Photos held a matching girl from the one Shawn had seen earlier. The woman who had identified herself as Carter's mom was of average height. Her long brown hair was knotted in a bun on the top of her head.

"Shawn Spencer." He introduced himself.

"I'm afraid not. We found your daughter this afternoon at the beach down the road. She's dead. I'm sorry for your loss." Juliet said slowly. The woman bit down on her lower lip and excused herself before walking into a different room. "That's weird…" Juliet placed a hand over her gun. Shawn put his hand on Juliet's upper back as he passed her.

"Look." Shawn walked over to the mantle and picked up a frame, "Boyfriend?" Shawn showed Juliet the picture. A man was standing next to Carter with his arms around her.

"Maybe." Juliet nodded looking around the room.

"Why is this place so clean? It's kinda odd…" Shawn ran his finger over the top of a bookshelf and rubbed his fingers together.

"The whole place is clean Shawn, there's nothing odd about that." Juliet told him.

"But teenagers aren't clean. There's no way a teenager did this." He motioned to the practically empty room. The room had an old couch facing towards an old fireplace with no logs or ashes inside. The only things besides the fireplace, couch and bookshelf was a single table with a light.

"Maybe the mother cleans?" Juliet suggested. Shawn shrugged and walked back over to stand next to Juliet. "Mrs. Fisher?" Juliet called out. A few seconds later the woman reappeared carrying a tray with cups and a kettle.

"Please sit detectives." She motioned to the couch. Shawn and Juliet shared a glance before sitting down on the couch. It gave a creak as weight was applied. Both Shawn and Juliet were given a cup with tea inside. "How did she die?"

"We believe your daughter was drugged. Someone spiked her drink and as she was driving she lost control and crashed into a wall and went down the beach." Juliet spoke softly as to let the news sink in slowly.

"Mrs. Fisher may I ask where Carter's father is?" Shawn asked noticing not a single picture of a man.

"He left me a few years back. I never had the heart to tell Carter." Shawn nodded in understanding. His eyes moved around the room and they settled onto a crack in the room. His brain went black and he stopped listening to the new questions Juliet was asking.

"You're doing this alone?" Henry asked Shawn looking at his wife. Shawn had just told them he was expecting a child and he would be raising it alone.

"Yeah. Plenty of people are single parents." Shawn shrugged.

"It'll need a mother." Maddie said holding onto Henry's hand.

"I did just fine without you mom. Look how I turned out." Shawn held his phone in his hands. An hour before his parents had arrived Shawn had gotten the call that changed his life. A woman had told him he was soon going to be a father and Shawn had been ecstatic.

"You were chased out of a city because you lied to the police." Henry pointed out bluntly. "Well, when you put it that way…" Shawn looked around the room.

"Goose, taking on a child is a big responsibility. Are you sure you can do this alone?" Maddie leaned over and took one of Shawn's hands into her own.

"But I won't be alone. You'll help me won't you? I mean it's your grandkid." Shawn practically begged. He was scared to take this on alone; he didn't want to screw the kid up. However he was locked in. He was going to be a father.

"Of course son." Henry nodded with a sigh. "But we have a lot to do. Baby proofing the house, setting up a nursery… Shawn do you know how to change a diaper?"

"Yeah. You fold it around and duct-tape it. Right? Just like what they do in the movies." Shawn answered.

"Take some classes, I'll look some up." Maddie stood up and smiled down at Shawn. "My little Goose is having a gosling." She wrapped Shawn in a hug.

"Mom…" Shawn trailed off.

"Give her the moment Shawn; we never thought you'd have kids." Henry smirked.

"So, is this a good disappointment?" Shawn asked slowly.

Henry chuckled, "You're a disappointment. Your kid however will never be one." Henry smiled at Shawn to show he was joking.

"Oh Henry." Maddie reached back and swatted at her husband. Shawn and Henry burst into laughing within a few seconds Maddie joined in. The whole family laughing in the living room, a sign of good things to come.

"Shawn? Shawn?" He felt a hand touch his shoulder.

"Huh?" he looked up and noticed Juliet staring down at him.

"Are you okay? You blanked out." She said letting his shoulder go.

"Just tired. Are you done?" Juliet nodded and he stood slowly. "I'm sorry for your loss." Shawn shook Mrs. Fishers hand one last time.

"Thank you." Shawn and Juliet didn't say another word as they left the house and walked to Juliet's car. They got into the car and buckled in.

"Want me to drop you off at your dad's house?" Juliet glanced at Shawn.

"Yes please." Shawn nodded leaning his arm against the door. "Did you get anything useful?"

Juliet sighed, "Just that her husband left her without a word. I'm going to be digging into his past. What about you? Did you get any… vibes?" Shawn shifted in his seat. He and Juliet had never talked again after he had told her the truth. She had no idea how Shawn did what he did and Shawn didn't want to explain it to her then.

"No." He simply answered. Juliet took his answer and didn't ask anything else. They drive in utter silence until Juliet reached the street where his parents lived. "Can you drop me off here? I don't want have to explain to my daughter what I'm doing." He added at Juliet's questioning look.

"Sure…" Juliet pulled over and stopped the car, "I'd like to meet her sometime. Your daughter." Shawn got out of the car and looked at Juliet.

"Maybe, I'll think on it. Thank you for the ride and really everything. I owe you." Shawn smiled softly.

"If anything I owe you Shawn, but you're welcome. I'll call you if anything comes up." Juliet told him. Shawn nodded and shut the car door. He walked away quickly with his blood dried up grey swear in his hands. Shawn unlatched the gate and walked through the yard and into the house through the sliding glass door.

"Daddy!" Zuri shouted standing up on the couch to see him.

Shawn smiled, "Hey baby girl." He walked over to her and kissed her head.

"Goose what happened?" Maddie stood up from the couch and grabbed the sweater from Shawn's hand.

"Just a little accident, I'll tell you later." He said motioning to Zuri. Henry nodded and leaned against the doorway with a frown across his face.

"Did you bring me something daddy?" Zuri loomed up at him with a finger on her chin.

"Oh… uh…" Shawn looked around, "I left it in the car baby. I'll give it to you later." Zuri frowned and squinted up at him.

"Are you lying daddy? 'Cause lying is bad." Shawn heard his dad chuckle behind him.

"I'm not lying Zuri. What are you doing up anyways? It's around your nap time…" Zuri jumped down from the couch and ran up the stairs. "That was easy." Shawn rounded the couch and sat down slowly onto it.

"Explain." Henry demanded from his position.

Shawn sighed, "Apparently after I told Juliet the truth she went to a bar and had some drinks. She ran into Declan."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Declan Rand?" Henry clarified.

"Yeah. She told him and he convinced her to tell the chief. After I'd been gone for a while they started dating again, now they're engaged." Shawn lifted his feet onto the table in front of him and he leaned his head heavily against the cushion behind him.

"How do you get yourself into these messes kid?" Henry rubbed his hands over his face.

"I'm wondering the same thing Pop…" Shawn trailed off and looked at the table in front of him.

"Are you taking the case?" His mom asked after a few minutes of silence.

"Yeah. Lassiter knows I'm on it." Shawn looked at her. Maddie nodded and stroked Shawn's hair gently with her hand. "I'm going to make some dinner. You hungry?"

"Can we have soup?" Shawn smiled at her hopefully.

Maddie beamed at him and laughed softly, "Of course Goose. Chicken noodle?" Shawn nodded enthusiastically. "Thanks mom." Maddie turned and passed Henry and walked into the kitchen. Henry moved around and sat down next to Shawn gently.

"What's up with the case?"

"There was a new crash at the beach. Teenage girl. We believe she was drugged like the others. Juliet and I talked to her mom. She didn't even really seemed fazed that her daughter was dead." Shawn told him.

"Father?"

"Gone. Left a long time ago." Shawn looked at the empty TV screen on the other side of the room.

"I want to help you with this case, and it's not a request." Henry patted Shawn's knee and stood up. He walked away into the kitchen where Shawn heard his mother buzzing around. He closed his eyes and felt his heard roll to the side. Within a few minutes the clinking of pots slowly dimmed away as he fell asleep.
