*(A/N): Hey guys! So this chapter and the next five are going to be a little different. I'm going to refer to these chapters or 'arc' as "The Trials" and you'll see why soon, also please notice the titles of the chapters! Please enjoy and I have another announcement at the end!*
Everyone is born into innocence, just like everyone has someone they truly care about. But over time, people lose their innocence and people will pass on… However, some people tend to find someone else to love nor do some lose their innocence completely. I am no exception.
I'm sure all of you are wondering why I cherish my cloak so much. You see, the person I used to cherish the most was my late mother, Summer Rose. She also had a cloak very similar to mine only it was white like snow with red on the inside. When she was killed by a hoard of grimm I was devastated… I inherited her cloak but yet I refuse to wear it and instead I made my very own. I know she still watches over me and because of that I try to be a good person…
…But what if I wasn't?...
What if I was there when she died? What if I knew that she wasn't killed by grimm? What if she died in my arms as I watched her killer run away unable to do anything? What if I grew up with all that hate? What if I never found someone else to love? What if I dedicated my life to finding that person and tracking him down? What if I can't stop myself from doing something to him when I do?... Would I lose my innocence?
…Would I still be me?...
~ Ruby Rose
"Your Blood…
~ Ruby ~
Ruby was crouching near the edge of the clearing picking some flowers. She was having fun when she heard a woman call her name out to her. "Ruby!"
Ruby turned and smiled upon seeing her mother. "Mommy, look how many flowers I got!"
"Ruby," Summer started to scold as she approached her only daughter. "how many times have I told you to not come out her by yourself?"
Ruby slightly pouted and handed Summer the flowers she had gathered as she spoke. "But I didn't go that far this time, and I picked all of these for you!"
Summer took the flowers from Ruby and smiled before she put a stern look on her face. "I don't care if you only wondered a foot from the yard! It's way too dangerous for a child like you to be out here!"
Ruby looked down at her boots with a frown and spoke softly. "I'm sorry mama…"
Ruby felt like she was about to cry when she felt a pair of soft lips kiss her on the cheek. Ruby looked up to see that her mother knelt down to be at eye length and was rubbing her shoulder.
"They're beautiful, Ruby, thank you for picking these for me." Summer said with a loving smile before standing up. "Let's go home now. It's getting close to dark and we don't want your father worried, okay?"
"Okay, mama!" Ruby said with a bright smile.
They were walking back to their little cottage they called home. The walk was peaceful and Ruby was happy walking along side her mother with the sun starting to set. Things where going well…until Summer suddenly stopped and Ruby walked into her. Ruby slightly tilted her head and looked at Summer with a confused expression. "What is it?"
"Shh!" Summer said as she pressed a finger to her lips telling her to be quiet. Summer was scanning the area with her eyes moving back and forth as if she was looking for something. "Ruby, run back home…now!"
"But I want to stay with you!"
"Ruby I-" Summer was cut off when a low rumble filled the area surrounding them. "Ruby, hide!"
Ruby turned to hide in a bush but stopped when she saw a pair of blood red eyes staring at her. Ruby froze in fear not knowing what to do; she became even more scared when the creature pounced. Ruby closed her eyes bracing herself for pain and was surprised when there was none; she opened her eyes to see her mother with her scythe unfolded and blocking the strike.
Summer turned her head slightly to look at her daughter with determination in her eyes. "GO. NOW."
Ruby didn't bother arguing with her, she's seen her mother have that look before and knew better then to test her temper even more. Ruby ran to another bush to watch her mother do her job.
The creature was in fact a creature of grimm and it was Summer's job as a huntress to annihilate any she came across, but this grimm was different. It was a beowolf but not as large as a fully grown one, it had no armor or spikes leaving it to be completely black except for it's eyes. However, it had scars of gash marks on it's back and torso and what appeared to be a slash from a sword over it's right eye.
Ruby sat there in awe as she watched her mother take on the beowolf single handedly. Summer was clearly handling the situation with her leaving gashes and sending bullets into it's body, but surprisingly the grimm was still swinging. Then suddenly things went for the worse…
Summer jumped over the beowolf to attack it from behind, but it was ready for that. It turned and swiped at the huntress forcing her to block, but the beowolf caught the handle of the scythe and sent it flying and shatter when it collided with a rock. It the swiped again and this time Summer was sent flying back and slammed into the tree.
"Mommy!" Ruby shouted running towards her mother.
"Ruby, don't come near! Get back!" Summer yelled with fear in her voice. The yelling of the small child drew the beowolf's attention to her and was about to attack.
Ruby shut her eyes thinking she was going to die, but then she felt a warm liquid splatter all over her face. She opened her eyes and they widened in pure horror at what she saw…
Her mother fell to one knee in front of Ruby with her back to her daughter and in her hands was a peace of the shattered blade wedged into the beowolf's torso… However, five long and sharp claws jutted out of Summer's upper back…right where her heart was.
The beowolf fell on it's back and Summer did the same, only she had Ruby there to catch her. "MOM!"
Ruby realized that her mother was passed out, when something caught her eye. She looked at the beowolf and noticed it was changing. It was getting smaller and smaller, and finally in it's place was a kid, probably only one year older than her. The kid was wearing black pants and sky blue shoes that matched the kid's pullover hoodie. The person kept their hood on to cover his face, but it didn't stop Ruby from seeing the sharp fangs in the kid's teeth and blood red glowing eyes. The kid stood and pulled the blade out of it's torso and saw the scene it caused. The kid turned and ran off causing Ruby to notice the wolf like tail attached to the kid's back.
Ruby brought her attention back to Summer when she felt her mother stir. "Mom?..."
"R-Ruby," Her mother said in a soft voice, but still had a loving smile. "I'm so glad…you're okay…"
"Mom!" Ruby said with tears sliding down her face. "Please hang in there, you'll be fine!"
Summer shook her head. "I-I'm afraid not… At least I can go knowing your safe…" Summer weakly lifted her hand and placed it on her daughter's face. "Hey, Ruby?"
Ruby was trying so hard to keep the tears back. "Yes mom?..."
"…I love you…" Summer said with a small tear falling from her eye.
Ruby couldn't hold it back anymore and started sobbing as she spoke. "I…I love you too, mommy…"
Summer gave one final loving smile before her eyes closed and her hand fell from Ruby's face.
Ruby sobbed into her mother's bloody chest before raising her head and shout into the sky. "Someone! Please! Help her!"
Ruby turned to the direction she saw her mother's murderer ran off to and saw the kid was gone. Ruby felt nothing but rage towards the kid, without really thinking, Ruby tried running after the kid but gave up when she realized it was pointless. She heard her father yelling her name, but she didn't care. She shook with so much anger and shouted as loud as she could in outrage hopping the kid would hear her.
"I'LL GET YOU FOR THIS SOMEDAY, THAT'S A PROMISE!"
…
She awoke to an annoying sound next to her head. She lifted her arm lazily and turned off the alarm clock on her nightstand. She then slowly sat up on her bed and looked out the window to see the sun shining through the trees of the forest…the forest where she died…
She dreamed of the day her mother died ten years ago. Today was the anniversary and once again, Ruby had to mourn alone… Her father passed away three years after that day leaving Ruby to fend for herself… But she still hasn't backed down from her promise.
She got up and got dressed to pay her respect… She walked out into the woods and found her mother's tombstone. She placed some flowers that were very similar to the ones she gave her so many years ago. She then sat down in front of the grave and stared at it for hours with tears in her eyes.
"Mom?... I'm sorry I couldn't save you that day… But I promise, I will find whoever did this to you soon."
"I thought I would find you here."
Ruby turned to see her friend Yang standing five feet away from her. "Hey, Yang."
Yang walked over to Ruby and put a hand on Ruby's shoulder. "Why don't we hang out together a little today?"
Ruby brushed Yang's hand off. "No, I'd rather stay right here."
Yang looked a bit sad at Ruby's reaction. "Look, I understand that you're in pain… But you really should be a bit more so-"
"I have to go to work now. I'll see you later." Ruby said while standing up, cutting Yang off. She knew Yang would never understand what she's going through.
…
Ruby walked out the front door of the café she worked at and was annoyed to see Yang outside waiting for her. "What are you doing here?"
Yang rubbed the back of her head and avoided making eye contact. "I was just passing by and noticed it was around time for you to get off, so I thought I could accompany you home."
"No thanks, I want to be alone." Ruby said as she tried walking past Yang but stopped when the blonde grabbed her wrist and looked her in the eye.
"You've BEEN alone for ten years!" Yang yelled angrily at her. "I get you're in pain, but it's not healthy obsessing over this!"
Ruby freed her hand from Yang's grip and started walking deeper into the city. "Whatever, I'm going to train."
"That's what I'm talking about!" Yang said while following her. "You're obsessing over something you can never change! I mean, what are you going to do if you do end up finding him?!"
Ruby finally snapped, she sharply turned towards Yang about to say something when someone bumped into her. "Hey, watch it!"
The person turned and Ruby froze. The person was wearing a sky blue cloak that flipped up revealing a wolf tail. The person had it's hood up and covering it's eyes, but Ruby noticed the two sharp fangs between the stranger's slightly parted lips. Ruby recognized this person, she finally found her mother's killer… And the killer obviously recognized her as well.
Ruby tensed her muscles and glared at the person, she then shouted as she lunged forward. "YOU!"
The person turned and started to run towards the forest and Ruby didn't hesitate to run after them this time. Ruby chased the killer deep into the forest, she ran around the stranger and to the top of a ten foot cliff. The person soon reached the bottom of the cliff and stopped to see if Ruby was still following her, that was when Ruby jumped on top of the killer.
Ruby pulled out of her pocket the same blade shard her mother used and had it lifted aimed at the killers chest. However, the force of Ruby jumping on the person caused their hood to slip and hitting their head on the ground knocked the person out, giving Ruby a look at her face.
That's right, HER! The killer was a girl, but then again I'm sure you guys knew that was coming…
Ruby was also surprised when she saw this faunus also had wolf ears. Ruby couldn't think about it for long though since the faunus was starting to wake up. The first thing Ruby noticed was that the girl's eyes were a beautiful sky blue.
"Maybe this isn't the person after all."
The faunus saw the blade shard and her eyes were filled with panic. "Please, don't!"
Ruby walked over to her and straddled her while pulling her closer by the collar. "Ten years ago in this forest, my mother was killed by a beowolf who then turned into a wolf faunus. Was that person you?"
The girl hesitated at first but then she nodded. "Yes…that was me…"
Ruby then glared into her eyes. "Why? Why would you kill her?!"
"I'm so sorry, I didn't want to!" The girl said shaking in fear.
"THEN WHY DID YOU DO IT?!" Ruby was now yelling in her face.
The girl broke and started to cry. "I…I couldn't control my aura at the time…I lost control and I didn't remember what happened until the next day. I'm so sorry, but please don't end up like me! Don't lose whatever you have left of your innocence!"
"Sorry won't bring my mother back, you bitch!" Ruby said as she started to trust the blade down. The girl quickly shut her eyes tight and turned her head away while she continued to cry and Ruby stopped.
"…Would mom want me to do this?..."
Ruby looked down at the terrified girl beneath her and she realized what she was about to do. Ruby lowered her arm and tossed the blade into a pond seeing that the faunus truly was sorry. "I will never stoop to your level."
"Very good, you've passed your test."
Ruby was startled and looked down at the faunus who was now smiling. "Wha-?"
The faunus' mouth opened and a thick white fog flooded out surrounded her so that all that Ruby saw was white.
~ Kiba Tomb ~
Ruby woke up on the hard ground and saw she was still in the Dark Shadows Forest. She sat up and looked around and quickly realized her team wasn't with her. She quickly jumped up and started looking for her friends in the fog, which was now a little thinner, when she heard a voice she was all too familiar with. "Get away from me!"
Ruby snapped her head in the direction she heard the voice come from and whispered one word.
"…Weiss…"
